    Thank you for the explanation of how the AWB offset works. Had the GY-HM200 for a couple of years, and played with that function a bit when I got the camera, but didn't really understand it. Looking forward to getting better, more accurate, colors in the future.

    Thank you Michael! I have been trying to figure out how to set the Kelvin temp manually for years! So "Preset Temp" is the equivalent of going to "K" within the White Balance options on my Sony A7iii.

    Hello Michael, my name is Luis Gonzalez, my English is very bad, sorry. Excellent explanation of Focus and WB... I'm new with a camera in hand, but I've been doing a sport fishing program "Secretos de Pesca" for 15 years, many exteriors, sea, sun, navigation, movements and more. I have many doubts, ISO, Shuter, Gain... I have searched for days for serious and professional information and you are the most serious thing I found. I am also concerned with the JVC GYHM200 exposure settings. First, what does it mean when in the viewfinder there are ND settings that flash. Does it mean the camcorder is recommending I use that setting? Does it mean that setting is my only choice? Also, it appears that the aperture has a limited range of F-stops from maybe F1.2 or 1.7 to F6.3. Should I be able to get something like F8 or F11 to get greater depth of field? Fortunately, I have learned how to set the exposure using one of the turning rings on the lens barrel.

  • @gunderfriend
    @gunderfriend 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I am also concerned with the JVC GYHM200 white balance system. If I know that sunset is about 3500 K degrees, do I set the camera at that? I did just that, but the golden prairie plants in the field turned out blue. Do you think it better to rely on the auto white balance? I did read your tutorial about white paint, but that might be tedious to do in the field.

  • @gunderfriend
    @gunderfriend 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thank you for your videos. I have the JVC GYHM200. I find it hard to get sharp focus on a shoot, say of an Iowa cornfield where it is a wide open scene left to right and into the distance. (BTW, I do know the value of having some foreground imagery to frame the shot). Not so hard to focus if there is a tractor or other machinery at work so that I can use autofocus on it. But if I want to show the beauty of the field without machinery, the resulting footage often is not sharp. It seems that what works best is to use manual focus, turning the focus ring, (maybe temporarily overexposing the scene in order to focus then returning to the exposure I want), and judging the focus in the monitor. But I also wonder about the value of utilizing the "infinity" setting. Is it helpful to rely on the "infinity" setting. It is better to rely on what I see in the monitor?

    • @MichaelWTurner
      @MichaelWTurner  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would use manual focus and use a combination of focus peaking and/or the magnification tool to focus on the furthest point. Also if you leave the iris wide open, the picture will not be sharp. You have to close it down. Try f4.6 - f8

    • @gunderfriend
      @gunderfriend 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. I did a little research and understand that the magnification tool may actually be an extra accessory to order. But I am wondering if the JVC GYHM200 has built in focus peaking feature.

    That was such a very good and informative video and comparison of the two "almost similar" JVC basic 4K UHD camcorders !!!!
    *- How you can compare "JVC HM-200" to the "Canon XA10 or XA20" ??*
    *- Which camcorder possibly you will choose for yourself to have for usage it by yourself ??*
    I am owner of that Canon XA10 for a while.
    - For any changes in set-ups and manipulation, you have to go through ugly touch screen of the LCD display. It is a hilarious time consuming procedure, to go EVERY TIME from main Menu, through all the branches of so many sub-menus to find the function which one you want to adjust. It is a very much complicated, inconvenient and very much time consuming procedure !!!!
    - - Canon XA10 & 20 camcorders they have no physical buttons or rings on the lens, dedicated or assigned to the basic and the most usable functions of this video camera like: WB, iris, focus, Gain, manual zoom, etc.
    - - - At least, going through the branches of so many sub-menus of Canon XA10, you can bring on the LCD screen: Waveform Monitor / Histogram & Vectroscope !!!
    - - - - Moreover, when you are shooting in strong sunlight ... the screen is less visible. So the whole process to change something on the touch LCD screen, is also a big time challenging and also a time consuming adventure.
    Beside this Canon XA-10, also I own these funny video cameras:
    1. JVC GZ-HM35BU ... UHD camcorder, I have purchased from the second hand store
    2. JVC GZ-HD5U ... (3 CCD - HD), I received as a gift from my fellow friend
    3. JVC GC-XA1BU ... Wi-Fi action camera, I have also purchased from the second hand store
    - - - - - Sir ... you can believe me or not, but even if I have my own "Canon" XA10, mostly I am using these JVC made little video cameras for my video productions. I like them more, for some convenient reasons.
    - - - - - - One of so many reasons, why I prefer shooting with JVC camcorders, is the overall much better quality of the recorded picture and sound. Recordings from JVC are better colour saturated (warm), they appear richer in detail and more beautifully colorful. They're look kinda ~juicy~ & brighter especially on sunshine day !!!!
    - - - - - - - Instead, from Canon XA10 camcorder, recordings are less saturated and colours are more bluish mixed with the gray (cool & frosty) !! The best simple difference between recordings with JVC & Canon, is possible to observe using your eyes, when you are looking at the same green grass and colorful flowers of being shoot simultaneously under the same lighting condition.
    - - - - - - - - JVC camcorders are responding much better with colour reception than Canons. !!!! For Canon video camera recordings I have to later always use colour correction software, while I am editing them together. It is a time & effort consuming unwanted procedure !!!!
    I am looking forward to possibly sell my XA-10 and to buy similar or even a bit better JVC 4K Ultra HD camcorder for a reason of unification of my video equipment. From your professional experience, which model of JVC camcorder you would suggest me to purchase, to replace my Canon XA10 ?? Sir, any idea ?? Please, respond !!!! Thank you so much. Have a great day :o)
    Sincerely,
    Remi

      I would have to say the JVC 170U/ 180u or hm200... whichever you can get your hands on for a good price. They are all pretty much the same except that hm200 has streaming capabilities...I think 🤔. It seems like you are usually shooting in good lighting conditions, so they will do well. They really suffer in low light though, but I imagine the xa10 is the same in that regard. For shooting live events the jvc cams I mentioned are setup in a way to allow you to work very quickly. Lots of buttons and switches in logical places

    Hello, could you explain the "FAW Paint" setting? Manual is a bit confusing, thanks.

    • @MichaelWTurner
      @MichaelWTurner  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's pretty much the same thing as AWB Paint except it works when you have your white Balance preset(PRST Switch) to FAW. FAW is Full Auto White Balance. So if you were using this preset your camera would change the white balance automatically depending on the color of the lighting in the scene. The FAW PAint will allow you tweak the color of the white balance adding or subtracting blue or red the same way AWB paint works. Also if you were to set your camera to shoot in Full Auto mode it would also pull from the paint modification that you made.

    • @MichaelWTurner
      @MichaelWTurner  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It won't come close to producing that kind of quality. You have to use a lot of light with that camera to produce nice images. Once you go beyond 12db of gain the picture falls apart. If you are only creating 1080p videos, you can try shooting in 4k and down scaling. That should help a little. @joharinichols2652 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do low-budget inde feature films; action/comedy, superhero, suspense. You can look at my youtube channel to see the commercials (Johari Nichols). Those 3 movies were shot with a consumer 720p, and 1080p camera; the controls are set in those cameras. I chose the JVC believing that... If I had a camera that lets me change the frame rate that would give my movies more of a "film" look versus a hi-def video look. I guess I'm finna find out next year.

    • @joharinichols2652
      @joharinichols2652 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Assuming that you know a little more about video cameras than I... any advice you would give a guy like me who shoots his own feature films? The biggest criticism inde-filmmakers get is "the look" of the movie. I know they make resolution as high as 8k without getting into 35mm film. I figured shooting on a 4k cinematic camera like this would give fans "the film" look they really want from me. As of right now I don't see the need to go any higher in resolution- not for what I do.
