I was one of your enemies the day this happened, I still remember to this day when it happened. All fighting stopped, waiting for details, posts in chat, message board lit up. We all felt the betrayal that day. I will never forget!

Its been over a year since his death and this tribute still brings me to tears. As serving with the CFC for 3 years down to this day i would like to offer my condolences to his family and friends once more. RIP VILE RAT.

Seven years later and still brings me to tears. Not sure if there is anything more evident than how this shows how small our world has become. And how someone half a world away can become such a good friend and comrade, and how their loss affects you. You are still remembered, Sean/Vile Rat.
You are still remembered Vile/Shawn. We know you watching your family and friends from whichever warp path you are taking. Fly safe, the cyno will always be lit for you.
I meet him in real life during is duty in Montreal. This guy was really an amazing person. I was a blue to him ingame, but never had the chance to fight under is command. However, I had the chance to speak alot with him about non-eve stuff. He was a truly amazing guy.
My meeting with him in Montreal was definetly the most significant meeting with other gaming folk. I respect him alot.
I never knew Vile Rat personally, I had but heard his name, never a bad word spoken about him. I never even knew this vid existed until a few minutes ago.
The fact that such tributes came in from the EVE community is touching, May he rest in peace and never be forgotten. RIP Sean.
RIP Vile Rat/Sean Smith. I never knew you, you were let down by the US govt, who could have sent help. Hell man I didn't even know you but I'm in tears over this. You've left a hole in people's lives that didn't even know you. That's the influence you had.

I just read about this, i was truly crying, being a former service member myself and also a player of EVE Online, people use the mantra EVE is real, although the game and ships we fly our digital, i look foward to nothing more than being on Teamspeak or Skype with my corpmates, that is what makes EVE real. This is truly a great community. Vile Rat although I never had a chance to meet you or talk to, I hope youre looking down at what you created smiliing my friend, RIP Sean "Vile Rat" Smith we will see you again.
I'm in tears myself. RIP. Vile Rat. He was let down by his country...there was air support less than an hour away, and the attack went for hours. Obama has a lot of sins to answer for.

Are you sure this was the best place to say that? On the man's memorial page, saying basically "there was no help for him; he was dead anyway?" It's not just the Tea Party that sees negligence. Anyone who ever knew Vile sees it. You can't tell me that it doesn't piss you off. To have someone crying for help to the people who are supposed to be there to aid him, only to be cast aside like junk mail to be dealt with when it was convenient. It doesn't matter if there was no air support in the area. What matters is that they didn't even try to save them. They didn't lift a finger to help him. Do you know what they call that in the legal world? Accessory to Murder. Knowing full well that someone will be killed and doing nothing to stop it. The truth is as simple as this, whether you're Republican or Democrat, Jew or Gentile, Black or White, men are dead and those at fault have been left alone to go free. If people want to honor Sean, then they shouldn't just remember him; they should avenge him.
+ bigbenhoward The rapid response team were the ones who called for help in the first place! I'm not stranger to the way war works. People die. But when you have an administration that took nearly 7 hours to even respond to the distress call, there is a problem. look it up. That's how it happened. The two service members that were already on station at the embassy got the message out. Because it was not in an active combat zone they had to wait for our bumbling idiot commander-in-chief's appointees to sign off on military action. They dropped the ball and people died. This was different than circumstances in an active war zone. The acting command for the area could have initiated a rescue without all of the red tape. Some people just can't be saved, but at least in those situations you described in Iraq and Afghanistan the command tried to save them. When I say "no one lifted a finger" I mean those in command. Not those who just saw the need and rushed to their aid. I mean the ones who were elected and appointed to lead this nation and do what is best. Instead what those four Americans received was a firm shove into a hushed casket. I have the highest respect for those in uniform, but this could have been avoided.
I never new Rat personally but the Goons, his friends and family have my condolences.

I read the book about the whole attack, it's called 13 Hours and it even mentions EVE online and Goonswarm Federation. It was just a really great book and talked about Sean Smith's sacrifice. May he be remembered.

This. This is what makes EVE awesome. Not the gameplay. Not the setting. Not even the cool-ass ships. It's the players. It's the connections, the friendships, the bonds.
In another MMO? Maybe a few words spoken in-game, but these...these are real people giving their real-life eulogies for a person who touched them all. Not just words on a screen.
(not to mention the recharge times on those Doomsday weapons...ouch!)

I was never a member of CFC, actually I was always an enemy of them. However, almost everyone who has played this game for a while knew who Vile Rat is. I was shocked by the message of his death and couldn't believe it at first. His death is so pointless and the motives of his murderers so primitive and stupid. I've never really known him, but for some reason I was deeply moved by his death. I really don't know what to say, words fail me. My condolences to his family and friends. RIP Sean...

I propose an indestructible Erebus memorial for VR. Seems appropriate as that was his main killmail ship at the end. Let Smith's legacy be an example to us, that despite our different alliances, religions, affiliations, politics, creeds, etc., our character can reach beyond barriers and bridge to friendships with even the most unlikely of people. Sean Smith was one of the 4 people killed in the September 11th 2012 terrorist attack on our embassy in Benghazi. He gave his life along with 3 other brave americans that day.
