This scene brought me to tears. My wife passed away in my arms three months ago at the age of 28. One moment we were sitting together watching a movie and two minutes later I'm giving her CPR and begging her not to go. Tell your spouse you love them every single day, because you never know when it'll be the last time.
Was she vaccinated? I know this is something is supposedly inappropriate to ask, but I've been asked it to enter a restaurant and for a job application.
I remember the night my father died I stayed at my parents house and I slept on the couch so my mom wouldn't be alone, in the middle of the night I woke up and I felt this feeling of a terrible loss and I remember hearing my mom crying from her room and I realized that for the first time in their 44 years of marriage they didn't have each other anymore and I couldn't do anything to make her feel better.
I don’t even remember them. It’s seems these days Hollywood is all bout profit&monopolies. During the 90s Uncle Sam would crack down on monopolies. At the first sign of illegal activity.
58 and bawling like a baby. Reminds me of my mom (still alive) and dad (passed in 2022). They bickered and fought and did normal couple stuff for 60 years. His birthday was last week and I called my mom and said "Did you wish Dad a happy birthday?" And she said "All day I have." 😭😭
This is heartbreaking. How could anyone not love Edith? So sweet and kind, a little nutty at times but adorable. These two were among the very best actors.
Edith was my mother 2022,An Angle that some people in my family never new even thought she brought them into This world and her grand kids....GOD THOUGH WILL PREVAIL-A-MEN
Whoever wrote this scene knows grief. It's always finding a shoe or a glove or something innocent when it all comes crashing down. Brilliantly written. Brilliantly acted.
Yes GREIF, one of the most horrendous experiences we humans must endure.......once you experience it, it changes you forever, unfortunately, its repeated several times for most of us.
I feel Archie's pain. My wife and I were married for 46 years. She passed away in 2017. I'm 76 years-old now, and I'll never forget her or get over her passing. When you really love someone, and spend almost your entire life with them, it's...well, I don't wish this on anyone.
@DonnellxxOkaforI'm sorry about the loss of your father. I lost my father in May, 2019. I was very proud of him. My mom died from breast cancer on September 9, 2021. When I called her on September 6, 2021 I made sure to tell her that I love her. She said the same thing to me. The very last time we ever heard each other, we both uttered I love you repeatedly. She died 3 days later, aged 78. Enjoy the time you have left with your mother.
I remember when my grandma passed. My grandpa lasted about 2 years. He had diabetes and was very good at managing it and then had trouble and my mom asked if he was sabotaging it. He said maybe. She asked him, please don't we need you still.
"I was supposed to be the first one to go". They nailed that painful guilt that so many widows/widowers feel. Especially when he says that she was supposed to stay and take care of things and he wasn't good enough to fit those shoes. Brilliantly heart-rending acting
The instant he picks up that shoe, you see an amazing method actor who has honed his craft and delivered beautiful art, equal to any that hangs on any wall in the most renowned gallery.
Ms. Stapleton was in a play in Kansas City when the episode aired and the hotel staff freaked out when they saw her walking around. She said I'm fine it was Edith Bunker who died not me.
My Dad lost my Mom just after their 52nd wedding anniversary. Dad was utterly crushed. Like Archie, Dad spent his entire life assuming and planning for him to go first so that Mom would be looked after. He simply wasn't prepared for being without Mom. And, in her own way, Mom was exactly like Edith. Dad passed exactly ten years to the day after Mom, and their funerals were even on the same date, which happened to be Mom's birthday and the anniversary of their first date. No doubt that was the longest ten years of Dad's life, but at least they're together now.
Same thing with my dad he thought he would be the first one to go since he had a bad ticker mouth cancer got my mom and she went before him and he never recovered from it
My wife and I discussed this before she died. She made me promise I would not become the husband that mourns his wife to the determent of future happiness. She saw that in her birth father and it always saddened us.

I don't watch so the tears will flow but to see O'Connor's and Brisebois' amazing performances. He hasn't given up yet and isn't going to give up now, if for no other reason than Stephanie needs him and he needs her.

Weight, substance, depth, life. Yeah, we don't get to see these things anymore. This little scene shows the poetry between the lines. This is art, the ability to move the viewer to feel something real, tangible. If you can't do that... it isn't art. And if it isn't art, why waste the time and the money better spent in more fruitful pursuits?
I know that feeling. Standing there in the room when it is so quiet all you can hear is your own breath and heart beat. You can still smell the person too. You even feel them. It is an aweful feeling because you realize its final. You'll never see them on this plane of existence again. Makes it even more impactful with Corol Oconnors broken english acting. A simple man trying to comprehend significant loss. Powerful.
This show kept it real. Didn't sugar coat what it portrayed. Always loved it for that. Archie's grief seems so genuine, we grieve with him. I cried seeing this years ago because it just wasn't fair. Edith was a precious soul. It hurt to see her go and see Archie all alone. But this show kept it real, like I said. Life isn't fair. This happens every day.
Carroll O’Connor wrote the death of Edith! It was if he lost his own wife! You see Archie’s heart! His love for his wife! His heart and soul! It makes me cry watching this! So real! How real like All in the family and Archie Bunkers place. Carroll O’Connor won the Peabody award for this episode! Jean Stapleton to Carroll was like the sister he never had in life. Carroll O’Connor!!! My favourite Hollywood actor!
I loved all in the family.edith and Archie are gone now.thank all of them for all the wonderful clips and wonderful memories we continue to watch god bless
If this scene doesn't rip the heart and soul out of you, you're not human. Two of the greatest actors of all time! Rest in peace Edith, and Arch... have one on me!
If you feel the need to challenge complete strangers on the depths of their grief and/or the manner in which they reveal it, you're not human. Grow up and try again...
When he notices her slipper... anyone who's been there knows how overwhelming a sudden reminder like that can be. Its a flood no man with any kind of heart could contain. While Archie was a very flawed man, he always had a big heart.
My dearest husband Adam died in my arms. His last words to me were, "My darling, I'll love you always." The song that was on was, "My Heart Will Go One." On the last note he exhaled never to inhale again. I was 36 and even though I'm 61, I still cry when I hear that song.😢😥💔 This April will make 25 years he died and I am Still in love with him. And I always will be.
I lost a friend of mine who I was the caregiver for back in 2018. It was a wonderful year, with the stuff we did together. We watched shows, sang, and played games. She was like another mother to me. Her passing while under my care was one of the hardest things to endure. I struggle still, but I do not regret the time I had with her. I cry, but I also smile at the good times, laugh at the funny things we would get into. Don't ever forget the memories of those close to you.
My dad reminded me of Archie at times & I think if my mom had passed before him, he would've been devastated like Archie!!! Both of my parents are gone & I'm in my 60's & I sure do miss them!!!! 😣🥺😢💔🌹
Give your loved one's hugs and tell hem you love them, we never know when are time is up. Just lost my aunt this week to cancer, but she is with God, fallen asleep in the physcial body, but in eternal spiritual glory in the promise of Jesus's death burial and resurrection! Thank God, and the Lamb, Jesus forever and ever!
@@fiily1 Thank you & that's so true!! I'm so sorry you lost your aunt, cancer is awful & doesn't spare many people!!! It's comforting to know that she's made her journey & is at eternal rest!! @@fiily1 I've lost both my parents, my mother to cancer, and my brother five years ago. He was my little brother. I'm by myself now but I look forward to joining them again one day. God bless you.
Carroll O'Connor was great in All in the family and Archie Bunker's Place. He was a great actor. That was one of the saddest parts of an episode. He was such a great actor.
Most people don’t understand that Carol O’Connor and other actors have to really go to a dark place inside of them to be able to cry and mourn on cue like that. He was one of the greatest actors that ever worked for Norman Lear! 👍🏾🎥🎞️
Carrol OConnor was a revolutionary actor. The realism that was at the center of what he did on this show had never been seen before. He was absolutely mesmerizing.
My father passed away on 10/10/2023. The priest asked my father what he was grateful for while he was in his death bed. and my father responded, " God going to allow me to go see my wife again and be with her." My mother had passed 05/24/2017.
Boy do I identify with him now! My own wife died on September 21, 2021 after only four months from being diagnosed with cancer. I cried for over a year (still do, did today). If you haven't lost a spouse, you have never experienced this grief. I felt like him.. I always thought I would go first.
So moving. Such wonderful acting. My father was like Archie. A World War Two combat veteran, staunch conservative, nose to the grindstone. And like Archie in this scene, my mother passed before dad, and dad said he expected to go first. But he lived another 11 years beyond mom to age 93. I lived with him his last 3 years and got stories from him about his childhood and the war I had never heard before. So bittersweet.
I lost my mother when I was 12, my father remarried four years later, then I lost my stepmother when I was 39. My father passed away when he was 85 (I was 52). Each loss was a severe pain.
The beautiful thing about this scene is that in real life, Jean Stapleton was still alive. It's easy enough to bring up real emotion for a cast member who really died, but this... wow. When Jean Stapleton was first approached with the idea of having Edith die, she said she didn't care, because Edith wasn't a real person. Norman Lear replied "She is to me." And she was to all of us.
she then said in interviews how she watch the espiode thought was well done Archie aka Carol did awesome job she was un hotel room. the next morning house keeper maid show up her room was shock see her said i thought you died cause she saw espiode show night before
I was surprised when Jean Stapleton died because I was a child when I saw this. I never made the connection from childhood to adulthood that Jean wasn't Edith!🤦🏾♀️
Watching Carroll O'Connor was always like watching a master class in acting. The detail and consistency of his character work was sublime in every sense, always matched and complemented by Jean Stapleton in their scenes together. Like all great actors that can also be great clowns, he could rip your heart out and hand it back to you and still make you laugh through the sobs. He is sorely missed.
I can never make it through this scene without crying. I can feel Archie's pain. My boyfriend passed away last September. Still haven't wrapped my heart around that he's gone 😔
This was one of the last of a great era for a couple reasons, they way they can convey emotion and they showed how love was supposed to be and how they actually loved each other spite their differences
Wow this and the scene from Good Times when Florida smashes the punch bowl after James died are two powerful scenes in all of television history Wow you can really feel it
I remembered this show. This part made me cry. Treat you love ones like you won’t see them tomorrow, because sometimes you don’t. And you can’t take back, or fix or say I love you it will hunt you for the rest of your life. Take care
Omg I’ve never seen this before and I’m in tears. I know his “real self” felt this scene, because no matter how good of an actor you are, you can’t fake tears 😢😭
This was sad enough, but really, the one that really got me in the feels was when Mike and Gloria said goodbye. Once they walked off the set, Carroll O'Connor gave an audible gasp and put a handkerchief to his eyes. I don't think he was acting.
How could you not cry during this scene! This was such a powerful moment, and it made Archie seem so much more loveable after this! Rest In Peace, Mr. O'Connor and Miss Stapleton!!
Archie had his own way of expressing his love for Edith ,and its very tough losing the love of your life, that best friend you spent all those years with, been there myself.
At my age, I find there's hardly anything that brings me to tears. However, this scene, so beautifully performed by Carrol O'Connor, gets me every.single.time.
This really one the MOST emotional and heartbreaking scenes of all time 😭😭😭 It's a shame that Maude, George and Louise didn't make an appearance this episode though
Carroll O'Conner was one of the most talented actors who ever lived. He went from Archie Bunker to Bill Gillespie, and they were both totally opposite characters, and he was magnificent at them both. RIP
That man is such an underrated actor. He's got you really convinced he IS Archie Bunker. That was one of the finest acting I've ever scene. The character is so realistic. That's how real people are. Layered. At the end of scene he doesn't break true form of Archie when taking a jab at Jersey folk but 20 seconds before he broke down in utter grief heartbreak and sorrow from losing his love of his life.
This is real life stuff, I went thru the same thing, but unfortunately turned to a bottle for comfort and dug my self in to a deeper, darker place and it was only by GOD'S mercy that I am here today! Thank you Lord ❤️
This scene brought me to tears. My wife passed away in my arms three months ago at the age of 28.
45 years later and I’m still bawling my eyes out.
Me too
😔😔😔
Me too 😢
Me three 😭😭😭
I'm chopping onions right now.
I loved this show. Watching this episode...I couldn't help but cry. Archie and Edith....real people...warts and all.......
Carroll had just lost his son, Hugh, from a drug overdose at about this time. I know he was thinking of his son when he acted out this scene.
@@deliveryguy7402 this was a decade before he lost his son. Hugh died in 1995
@@satishrobertson8771 Correct. This was looong before he lost his son. This scene was aired in 1980.
I loved Carroll in the sitcom , " In The Heat Of The Night" .
Still cry when I see this all these years later
What a phenomenal actor!
This happens to every one that's lost someone very close to them. This was so sad 😢😢
Yes your soul mate
Yes to me every day and night
@@jackieguccione94 So sorry for your loss. You obviously had something I would never get to experience, please be thankful for that.
My biggest fear in life. 34 yrs I will die with him someday.

My mom passed away 11 years ago. My 83 year old dad still keeps her intact purse with her size 5 shoes neatly by their bed.
That's lovely. 💔
Oh, my heart 🙏🏻🤍🥲
I loved all in the family.edith and Archie are gone now.thank all of them for all the wonderful clips and wonderful memories we continue to watch god bless
If this scene doesn't rip the heart and soul out of you, you're not human. Two of the greatest actors of all time! Rest in peace Edith, and Arch...
have one on me!
If you feel the need to challenge complete strangers on the depths of their grief and/or the manner in which they reveal it, you're not human.
Grow up and try again...
I felt nothing for this scene
Love this show
@@sharonhahn8644 One of the best shows of all time!
For me it was the look of utter betrayal when Edith discovered he cheated on her with that waitress in season 7
Agree a very touching moment. Archie always loved Edith.
Thank you, this was a time when TV was worth watching.
Agreed!!
Exactly and had a profound effect on society.
Anyone who has ever experienced a loss so great can certainly relate to the emotions Archie displayed.
When he notices her slipper... anyone who's been there knows how overwhelming a sudden reminder like that can be. Its a flood no man with any kind of heart could contain. While Archie was a very flawed man, he always had a big heart.
Yes, my loss so great was my mother
You never ever get over it.🙂🖤
Edith dying and Radar saluting the doomed Henry Blake....two of the most heartbreaking scenes in TV history

My husband passed almost 3 years ago. I still miss him so much. Every day feels like it just happened.
Wow this actually brought me to tears seeing Archie like this ..
I remember watching this when it came out, very emotional. We all felt Edith was like our mom or a favourite aunt that passed.
His performance was absolutely perfect
Carroll O'Connor was great in All in the family and Archie Bunker's Place. He was a great actor. That was one of the saddest parts of an episode. He was such a great actor.
Most people don’t understand that Carol O’Connor and other actors have to really go to a dark place inside of them to be able to cry and mourn on cue like that. He was one of the greatest actors that ever worked for Norman Lear! 👍🏾🎥🎞️
Carrol OConnor was a revolutionary actor. The realism that was at the center of what he did on this show had never been seen before. He was absolutely mesmerizing.
Now, this is what you call acting. They don't make actors like this anymore.
That’s the problem!!!
Amen
I'm crying my eyes out. 😢
I agree with you DiscoMood. He was awesome in the to show In the Heat of the Night
I agree with you they need to bring acting like this back . This episode made me cry also thinking of my dad in heaven he loved his show he did .
My father passed away on 10/10/2023. The priest asked my father what he was grateful for while he was in his death bed. and my father responded, " God going to allow me to go see my wife again and be with her." My mother had passed 05/24/2017.
Oh man min 😢 Much condolences To your family through these trying times😢
My dad passed 10-10-17, followed by my mom 12-29-18. I can't wait to join them
One of the most poignant scenes I've ever seen on a TV program. Archie really did adore Edith.
I would say Archie really did love Edith..
@oldmanwitherspoon well…he thought she was ok.
He always did... we all did
This and dam dam DAM!
@@squonk86 yes he did.
Boy do I identify with him now! My own wife died on September 21, 2021 after only four months from being diagnosed with cancer. I cried for over a year (still do, did today). If you haven't lost a spouse, you have never experienced this grief. I felt like him.. I always thought I would go first.
Hello Neil Roy how are you doing today?
I feel you brother. My wife was 3 months of dying of cancer after a too late diagnosis. Hang in there brother, we will get through this...

*So Sorry. Sending all my love*
One of the greatest shows. Back when shows were worth watching. Incredible actors.
And no one was offended.
yeah tv sucks now
Carroll O'Connor wonderful actor. Rest in Peace.
Yes he was
Loved All in the Family, Archie Bunker's Place and In the Heat of the Night. O'Connor was an excellent, underrated actor.
All the cast should have gotten an Emmy! His tears were real....and you can't watch without gettin terribly emotional!
This scene felt so real and Carroll O'Connor was a wonderful actor.
We don't have television like that anymore! "All in the Family"was a high in the ratings back in the day! Norman Lear & his writers were excellent!
This definitely brought tears to my eyes. Great show and awesome actors/actresses ❤
Absolutely crying that Archie is absolutely devastated over Edith’s death . This show was one of greatest ever .
I understand how he feels. Actually it was 8 years ago that my husband unexpectedly passed. Brings me to tears everytime I see it.

Three years ago this April for me. We were together 28 years.
All these years later, still makes me cry
I've seen this scene several times and it gets me every time.
Norman Lear replied "She is to me."
And she was to all of us.
To us too! xoxoxo
she then said in interviews how she watch the espiode thought was well done Archie aka Carol did awesome job she was un hotel room. the next morning house keeper maid show up her room was shock see her said i thought you died cause she saw espiode show night before
Yes, she was a alive. This is a sitcom!
I was surprised when Jean Stapleton died because I was a child when I saw this. I never made the connection from childhood to adulthood that Jean wasn't Edith!🤦🏾♀️
@@BayouBarbie504That's one of the reasons Jean left the show, she was afraid no one would know her for any other role and be typecast.
One of the most brilliant moments in television history. Raw and honest.
We've all been there at one time. Carroll hits it out of the park with this one.
I'm sorry
I’m so sorry. Sending gentle hugs and wishes for comfort, peace and all you need. 💙
I’m sorry for your loss. Mine passed away on Easter, 2020. It never gets easy. 🙏🏽🙏🏽
I loved that show. The only person who could stifle Archie 😊
This was one of the last of a great era for a couple reasons, they way they can convey emotion and they showed how love was supposed to be and how they actually loved each other spite their differences
I remember seeing this episode when it aired and cried!!!! Edith definitely was the glue that held the family together 🥹❤️
Wow this and the scene from Good Times when Florida smashes the punch bowl after James died are two powerful scenes in all of television history
Wow you can really feel it
People laugh and joke about the good time scene
Those two, and two of the Fresh Prince episodes with Will's dad and where Carlton accidentally takes pills.
Mark Jones you are absolutely correct Sir, these two shows were my favorites growing up and still are
I agree!
I remember Florida yelling damn, damn, damn!
I cried the first time this aired and I’m crying now. All in the family and Archie’s Place was a big part of my childhood experience ❤
Carroll O'Connor was such a good actor in both All in the Family and the Heat of the Night. RIP.
That scene is so heart wrenching. Such a good show and such a great actor.
I remembered this show. This part made me cry. Treat you love ones like you won’t see them tomorrow, because sometimes you don’t. And you can’t take back, or fix or say I love you it will hunt you for the rest of your life. Take care
Edith touched everyone. Touch cold hearted Archie even more.❤
Omg I’ve never seen this before and I’m in tears.
That acting was amazing 💔🥺 The fact that you can hear the audience coughing from crying says everything!
At my age, I find there's hardly anything that brings me to tears. However, this scene, so beautifully performed by Carrol O'Connor, gets me every.single.time.
When tv was appointment television...not just because of options..but because even with only 3 networks it was GOOD!!
This really one the MOST emotional and heartbreaking scenes of all time 😭😭😭 It's a shame that Maude, George and Louise didn't make an appearance this episode though
Why didn't they come over to Archie bunker's place ?
You should write!!
Beneath it all Archie had humanity. My dad passed away in 2019. Never pass up a chance to tell someone you love them.
Carroll O'Conner was one of the most talented actors who ever lived. He went from Archie Bunker to Bill Gillespie, and they were both totally opposite characters, and he was magnificent at them both. RIP
I remember that episode like it was yesterday. I cried like I had lost a family member. That really takes me back. 💕
What a gem of an actor Carrol was.
it is such an overlap with reality in 2023 when they both are gone and you cry with him in memory of two great persons and great show
All these years later, still makes me cry. Not like the hallowed emotionless acting today.
My heart had ached for Archie. Edith was so incredibly beautiful and amazing in her own special way. ❤❤❤❤
You could feel his pain. That is how a spouse would react. So many memories. So many trivial things like a house slipper can trigger so much grief.
Never saw this back when the series was on. Made me cry. Reminds me so much of people I have lost. I was supposed to go first, Archie. Me too.
That is not acting, that is straight from the Heart. ♥️💔♥️
Hello Rosemary, how are you doing today.
