Umbridge's actress does such a good job with her character. Compare her here to The Crown or Sense and Sensibility, which just shows how good her range is.
In the first comic con that the actress who plays Dolores went to as soon as she showed up, she started to be booed. In response, Alan Rickman (Snape) said if they didn’t stop he was leaving. The actress has said that there were multiple times wind filming. She had to stop and cry because of the sickening stuff she had to say. I commend her wholeheartedly for her work. That being said whether it’s the movie version or the book version, I hate Dolores Umbridge more than any other character in that book series. I wanted her dead more than Voldemort.
There is a theory that Umbridge was... Well, let's say taken advantage of, by the centaurs, as they would often do such things when capturing human women in Greek mythology, but there is no indication that this happened in her case. Perhaps because, in the books at least, the centaurs view themselves as highly moral creatures, putting themselves even above humans in that regard, but there's never been an official answer on the matter.
@@Armatu5 I disagree on there being no indication. They did *something* to her. She was with them for a long time and afterwards was unresponsive for days, only reacting, with fear, when you made the sound of horse hooves. She had serious PTSD from her time with the centaurs. Multiple potential causes, but that is one interpretation.
I don't know if anyone told this but the dementors in the book they explain that umbridge sent them which makes her the most hateful character in the movie and the books
18:52 Correction: 5 older brothers. Two oldest, Bill & Charlie, are out there living their own lives, there is Percy who was Prefect/Head Boy during his time at Hogwarts and then there are the Twins 😁❤️
Also add that, at least in the books, his younger sister has all of those attributes of his five brothers combined. She's a great athlete, she's really intelligent, she's super popular, she's really funny.
Harry is meant to be 11 in the first movie, having his 11th birthday on July 31st and starting school like a month later in September. Basically whatever number movie you're on, Harry's meant to be that number + 10 years old. Fun Fact, Daniel Radcliffe is the proper age in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 6th movies (or at the very least, was the same age as Harry for the majority of the filming process)
@@KC_ESQ Oh, we are going into moral philosophy then. Can someone with good intentions be evil? Are actions objectively good or wrong, or only based on the perspective of the person taking the action? 'For the Greater Good', can you take some questionable things?
@glowdace79 werewolf’s have no control of their actions when turned. It’s stated multiple times in the books, on the various cannon websites and in the movie. Lupins actions while turned are of no fault or intention to him. He doesn’t want to hurt his students or his best friend but in wolf form he has no control
I just unlocked a core memory today. The first time I ever used a cuss word was when The Minister of Magic saw Voldemort and went "He's back" to which I replied "NO SHIT"
The Dumbledore vs Voldemort fight is actually something I personally prefer way more in the movie than I did the book. Also, I love the addition of Harry fighting off Voldemort in his mind. 💜
@@supersizesenpai Yes, but it's good to show how extraordinary Voldemort and Dumbledore are in their skills. It would diminish that if everybody could do what they could do.
@@theshadowfax239 I don't need them to fight on the same level as those two, their magic is in a league of its own. However, that doesn't mean we can't see other spells. We get like the same 3 basic spells used by everyone except whenever Harry fights Voldemort. When those two battle it just turns into a battle of beams. Speaking of which, why does Voldemort choose to fight Harry in that fashion? When he fights Dumbledore he goes all out with crazy spell after crazy spell but with Harry he starts blasting like he's using the Ghostbusters' Proton Pack. I'm confident that if he fired a giant fire snake at Harry, he couldn't counter that shit like Dumbledore did, especially when you learn the insane magic behind that spell.
@@supersizesenpai lack of imagination. In the books that stream fight only occurred at the end of GoF. And the flying around the room in black and white blurs wasn't a thing either. They saved on budget, is my guess.
17:47 close but apparently Tom Riddle wanted to get the job for Dark Arts teacher but dumbledore refused him. It’s been a theory that when he left Hogwarts he cursed the position so that no professor would complete a “full year” in the position. Add a new layer for why he refused Snape.
So if I'm remembering correctly, next to Harry, Ginny has the most Raw power by virtue of being a Seventh Child, there is a deep magic connected to numbers in this world.
I know that by the time I, as a non member, am seeing this, you'll have seen this movie like a month ago, and you've probably already heard from other commenters, but it's going to bother me if I don't say so. In the books, in the scene where Harry brings the catatonic Dudley home, Vernon was so furious with Harry that he tried to kick him out of the house. And just then, they received a howler, the letter that talks, from Dumbledore saying "Remember my last, Petunia!" This causes Petunia to break down in tears, saying that Harry can't leave
Everyone always talks about Umbridge being the most hated character both in this book/movie and the entire series. But I also wanna give Fudge a mention, hands down the second most despicable character in this book and movie
@@dynamicenderTo be honest, it’s hard for me to hate Bellatrix more than Fudge and Umbridge. Bellatrix is a Death Eater, she’s supposed to be evil. But when Fudge and umm Umbridge work for the Ministry! These are supposedly the good guys!

The Dementors have had their cloaks/hoods removed in this movie. It's never explained in the movie, but Delores Umbridge sent the Dementors after Harry herself, knowing he'd either end up a soulless husk unable to properly live or defend himself with magic and thus give the ministry a reason to expell him and ruin his reputation.
@@dragonsvideos6737 yeah, she did it by herself after the ministry's efforts to discredit Harry and Dumbledore weren't as effective as they'd have liked.
Harry Melling (Dudley) and Richard Griffiths (Vernon Dursley): Shoot, we're going to be the most hated people in the HP Fandom. Imelda Staunton (Umbridge): Hold my beer.
10:55 "Brian" is an over 1 thousand year old name of Irish origin, translating to "noble" and "might". It was made popular by the High King of Ireland of the 1002-1014, Brian Boru, from whom the surname O'Brian (meaning descendent of Brian) and its spelling variations of derived. Yes, Conan O'Brien is a direct descendent of royalty. The name "Percival" is equally as old, and comes from Celtic France, meaning "pierce the valley". It's almost always shortened to "Percy" nowadays. "Wulfric" comes from England, IE Britain and Scotland, and is estimated to be a few centuries older, it translates to "wolf realm/power". Dumbledore of has names of high nobility from 3 major powers of medieval Europe. The name "Albus" dates back to Rome and simply means "white", and "Dumbledore" is an invented named that's just supposed to roll of the tongue like "bumblebee".
Dumbledore "i didn't want to cause you anymore pain" Meanwhile Harry now has a dead Godfather and the words "i must not tell lies" as a scar embedded into his hand. All because Dumbledor wanted to go the pacifist route instead of taking resposnibility and preparing him.
I love Luna so much! She's so cute and sweet. Umbridge is top-tier villain, the portrayal is excellent because we all hate her more than we even dislike Voldemort
Imelda Staunton did a fantastic job playing a character who was more hated than the story's main villain. The fact that Umbridge was more hated than Voldemort himself makes the scene where she gets carried away like firewood by the centaurs that much more satisfying. When I first saw Grawp, I thought he looked like the illustrated kid on the cover of MAD Magazine, Alfred E. Neuman. Also.... Cornelius Fudge, after seeing Voldemort: He's back.... Me, sarcastically: *Gee, if only someone said that the previous year and at the hearing. Oh, wait....*
My guys, are you all forgetting that the third Defence Against The Dark Arts teacher was Professor R.J. Lupin, good friend to Sirius Black, awesome teacher, and left the school on good terms? I just want my guy to get the respect he deserves!
Just wait until they announce Gandolf as the defense against the dark arts teacher. His opening statement was a bit harsh though, “You shall not pass!”
7:26 “dude Harry Tubman he’s the one that freed them all”🤣now that’s one I’ve never heard a reactor say but it makes perfect sense lol Harry really freed a slave
In the book it wasn't Cho Chang who betrayed Dumbledore's Army to Professor Umbridge - it was Marietta Edgecombe. A friend of Cho's and a fellow Ravenclaw, Marietta (reluctantly) joined the DA.Marietta Edgecombe betrayed Dumbledore's Army primarily due to her fear and pressure from her mother, who was a member of the Inquisitorial Squad. They didn’t want to introduce a new character whose sole purpose was to be a snitch. It was much easier for Cho to be the one to do it, albeit unintentionally. Umbridge spikes her tea with truth serum so as soon as she asks, Cho has no choice but to spill.
The movies don’t mention it, but Umbridge was the one who initially sent the dementors to attack Harry, and then subsequently voted to have him expelled for defending himself.
Out of all the many book to movie changes it is probably how the Weasley twins mess with Umbridge I miss the most. They turn a whole corridor near her office into a magical stink swamp that Umbridge can’t undo, and the other teachers refuse to get rid of it until the end of the book. They leave a small section of it there as a reminder of how impressive a piece of magic it was. When they leave they school and let off all the fireworks, the fireworks are still going off a day later. They multiply when you try to banish them. They announce the opening of their store and promise discounts for stuff used to mess with Umbridge. Umbridge tries to ban anything from their store, but it still gets through. Including Skiving snack boxes that make you vomit to get out of class. So Umbridge has her whole classes start vomiting. A cut character Peeves the poltergeist, salutes them as the leave and promises to follow their example. When he tries to unscrew a chandelier to drop on Umbridge's head, McGonagall is overheard telling him it unscrews the other way.
When I first saw this as a kid and Sirius said “nice one James” to Harry it crushed me because in a way they both saw James in each other. Since harry never had his father he came to see Sirius as his dad and Sirius started thinking of harry as his old best friend
23:56 Don't tell me yall forget Lupin is good. It's just he quit because someone let slips he's identity a werewolf. 52:15 Remember, whatever Harry sees, Voldy sees as well. Brian kept Harry away just so Voldy wouldn't get all the details. 53:26 Nose 👃
Happy probably belated birthday Sean! I grew up reading the books as they came out. I was so a Harry and Hermione stan at first. But I do like circumvented expectations. Sean is right too on how they can just be friends and it feeling more natural.
Just a little FYI, Muggles can't see Dementors, so Dudley had no idea what was happening. All he knew was feeling a sense of uneasy and Harry casting a spell. So naturally, he assumed the two were connected.
@@XChaoticX99 Muggles are people without magic. Hagrid explained it in the primary movie, hermionie is a Muggle-born witch, her parents are Muggles but she is not.
@@XChaoticX99 mate you sound like one of the pureblood elitists lol Also you don't necessarily have to be able to do magic to see the dementors. You just need to not be a muggle. Ms Figg is a squib (a person born from 2 wizards but unable to do magic) and it appears she could still see them.
I also found it funny before when you said Snape was the malfoy during Harry's parents time when technically that's wrong since Draco dad would have gone to school with then as well but James Harry's dad was the Malfoy of snapes life
51:25 The funny thing is, if you go by the details we know because of Fantastic Beasts, what Nagini is and their condition, and when the parsel tongue (or however it is spelt) came about, there is the high likelihood every dark wizard who idolizes Salazar’s “pure of blood” teachings are believing in a false variant of them. One theory going around is that Salazar’s wife was a witch who suffered the same maldiction as Nagini, that she is a natural snake animagus who over time cannot return to their human form. Salazar had learned the language to be able to converse with her in said form and built the chamber not to hide a great weapon, but as a sanctuary for his love and any of his descendants so they too could protect his wife or find refuge if they shared in the maldiction. That his statements on the purity of a wizard’s blood lent not to parentage involving a muggle, but rather that he was against witches or wizards with such “blood curses”/maldictions from having offspring, as he didn’t want any others to suffer the same fate. While yes, still makes him an eugenicist, but a different message from people thought. Not even sure if the other Founders knew of his wife or her condition.
@ There is even a detail on the page concerning Basilisks that mention the difference between a male and female, namely the plumage upon the head on females, a detail shown in the film, and I believe described during the confrontation in the book.
One of the things I'm most upset they excluded from the movies was Harry getting to hear the actual prophecy from Dumbledore in the end of this one and learning that the Chosen One could have just as easily been Neville.
About people calling Voldemort You-Know-Who: it's because during the first war, Voldemort turned his name into a location spell. All of his followers only called him "The Dark Lord", so anyone calling him by name was being disrespectful and an enemy. People started being scared of saying his named and being killed by Death Eaters, and even after his death, the fear continued.
When Sirius got killed and Harry was seen screaming muted, apparently the scream was so real and emotional that they couldn't show it on screen so they muted it
Came to see if someone had mentioned this. Daniel Radcliffe must have pulled off quite a performance when everyone present went "shit... we can't use that, it's too raw"
From my understanding, he said they filmed it after his grandmother had just passed away so he used that moment to grieve and a lot the actors, partically Helena and Emma, on set were so upset by his screams that it made them cry.
@@AnnaleeLugo Nope. Not true at all. Have had to debunk this false rumor 10000 times, and Daniel himself have asked people to stop spreading it. Elsie died 1 year after this movie even came out. He’s just a good actor.
It’s not exactly made the most clear, but the reason they don’t like to say Voldemort’s name is because back when everyone’s parents were fighting Voldy the first time (when Harry’s parents died and Neville’s parents were tortured, etc) he put a curse upon his name so that if anyone spoke his name aloud that was part of the resistance back then would be immediately tracked down. Saying his name out loud was essentially like putting the ring of power on in Lord of the Rings back then
I will always love the fight between Dumbledore and Voldemort here going through the 4 elements, it's always an spectacle when you realise it, Starting with the fire snake, going to the water ball, then the air explosion then turning glass into sand. Even Voldemort realising saying "earth" in the end of the fight is the cherry on top.
Umbridge is literally a british Karen, she's just so double face, self-important, boundary stomping and "I can't do no wrong" while commiting actual torture as punishment and then saying is justified. And then when she's finally facing the consequences of her actions she expected others to save her.
The one done most dirty in this movie...McGonagall! Because she was a boss in roasting Umbridge in the books through dry quips. IMO the highlight humor wise of this book.
42:08 fun fact: in the books after the twins leave hogwarts the teachers go out of their way in supporting their rebellion by passively undermining umbridge’s authority. For example on top of everything the twins do in the movie they did more in the books including turning an entire floor of hogwarts into a swamp. Now the charms professor flitwick could have easily fixed that in less than a minute but he “decided” to “take his time” in fixing the matter.
Lol I love that Hufflepuffs are just the red shirts of the wizarding world. "We ride together, we die together"! Yeah in droves. Also I don't remember but I think the whole situation with the Dementors with Dudley changes him.
It does. It wasn't included in the movies, but in the beginning of book 6 Harry keeps stumbling over food or glasses of drinks left at his door and he thinks Dudley pranks him that way, but in actuality it was Dudley's way of being kind by trying to give Harry extra snacks (something he himself values quite high as a spoilt chubby lad). Also that line in book/movie 7 that didn't make it into the final cut, but you can see it on youtube: (SPOILER): "I don't think you're a waste of space". Considering who Dudley is, it may as well be him saying "I love you, cousin."
The funniest part about the prophecy situation is it literally does nothing for Voldemort, just re-tell him what he already has hints to be true. I mean, I guess he was hoping for more hands on how to defeat Harry, but that was never a part of the prophecy.
32:57 Should be Adam Driver. He’s got the hair style, has the right complexion, and is closer to the book Snape’s age. Plus, I feel like he could throw in the necessary venomous distain into his voice.
Fun fact: Stephen King was quoted as one saying that Dolores Umbridge is "the greatest make-believe villain to come along since Hannibal Lecter." My two favorite things in this movie are (1) getting introduced to Bellatrix Lestrange and (2) when Dumbledore goes “It was foolish of you to come here tonight, Tom” ….I love that he called him Tom

That was nice of Alan Rickman to do that!
I don't know if anyone told this but the dementors in the book they explain that umbridge sent them which makes her the most hateful character in the movie and the books
Why did she send them? I’m a movie person not a book person
@dragonsvideos6737 she sent them because she hated harry and felt somebody had to act to put him in his place
Fun fact: Stephen King has hailed Umbridge as "the greatest make-believe villain to come along since Hannibal Lecter." 💜
Having worked in public education, I know dozens of people just like her. She’s probably the most believable villain in the whole Potterverse.
King was a great writer, but he's lost his marbles in the last 10-15 years. So depending on when he said it, i'd take it with a grain of salt.
@@DarkSun123456789 I went looking for the date, Stephen King said this back in 2003 after the book's release.

In the 3rd movie, Professor Lupin was the Dark Arts teacher, but he wasn’t a bad guy.
Well, he was a werewolf, and tried to eat Harry and Hermione...
@glowface79 yeah but inherently he wasn’t a bad guy aka had no ill intentions
@@KC_ESQ Oh, we are going into moral philosophy then. Can someone with good intentions be evil? Are actions objectively good or wrong, or only based on the perspective of the person taking the action?

I wish the series had more fights like that instead of just 2 energy beams crashing into each other from that point forward..
@@supersizesenpai Yeah but who doesn't love a good Priori Incantatem?
@@supersizesenpai lack of imagination. In the books that stream fight only occurred at the end of GoF. And the flying around the room in black and white blurs wasn't a thing either. They saved on budget, is my guess.
Fun fact: Umbridge was the second person to permanently scarred Harry behind Voldemort
Nah im sure dudley gave him at least one scrape as a kid that scarred haha
17:47 close but apparently Tom Riddle wanted to get the job for Dark Arts teacher but dumbledore refused him. It’s been a theory that when he left Hogwarts he cursed the position so that no professor would complete a “full year” in the position. Add a new layer for why he refused Snape.
And why he let Umbridge have the job.
Harry inherited everything that belonged to Sirius, the house, the elf and his money
He already had his parents money which was a fortune in itself but with the blacks fortune now he is now one of the most wealthiest wizards ever

Wait seriously?
As a member of the African American community "Harry Tumbman" is hilarious 🤣🤣 history/fantasy crossover I didn't know I needed
Dumbledore "i didn't want to cause you anymore pain"
Meanwhile Harry now has a dead Godfather and the words "i must not tell lies" as a scar embedded into his hand. All because Dumbledor wanted to go the pacifist route instead of taking resposnibility and preparing him.
I love Luna so much! She's so cute and sweet. Umbridge is top-tier villain, the portrayal is excellent because we all hate her more than we even dislike Voldemort
Everyone hates evil that hides behind a mask of pleasance.
Neuman.

My guys, are you all forgetting that the third Defence Against The Dark Arts teacher was Professor R.J. Lupin, good friend to Sirius Black, awesome teacher, and left the school on good terms?
I just want my guy to get the respect he deserves!
If Harry was told anything, Voldemort would have taken that from his mind to his advantage.
Just wait until they announce Gandolf as the defense against the dark arts teacher. His opening statement was a bit harsh though, “You shall not pass!”
Lmao
10:49
Also Dumbledore sound the most proud of having Brian as part of his name
Technically Harry is wrong in saying that Voldemort killed Cedric, because Wormtail killed Cedric.
I mean Wormtail followed 'Morts command (Kill the Spare)
When I first saw this as a kid and Sirius said “nice one James” to Harry it crushed me because in a way they both saw James in each other. Since harry never had his father he came to see Sirius as his dad and Sirius started thinking of harry as his old best friend
Finally Luna is here 😂🎉
He knows what he's capable of, but he also knows that he is not allowed to do magic outside of school. That is why he challenged him.
The back and forth between Umbridge and McGonagall was hilarious in the book. 😂
I loved the moment when McGonagall gave hints to Peeves the poltergeist to help him create even bigger a mayhem.

Just a little FYI, Muggles can't see Dementors, so Dudley had no idea what was happening. All he knew was feeling a sense of uneasy and Harry casting a spell. So naturally, he assumed the two were connected.

I've not heard that theory before. That's really cool and a lot more smart than what Hogwarts Legacy did with hom
"We have something that he doesn't"
"What?"
" A nose"
Umbridge is generally more hated than any other character in the entire series. Voldemort, Bella Lastrange, the Malfoys… nobody comes close.
Now I kind of want to hear it- the original recording must exist somewhere
From my understanding, he said they filmed it after his grandmother had just passed away so he used that moment to grieve and a lot the actors, partically Helena and Emma, on set were so upset by his screams that it made them cry.
"his acting was so good they couldn't use it"
Yeah that makes zero sense. You got a source for this?

thirsting for voldie in a suit is SO real lmaooo
It’s not exactly made the most clear, but the reason they don’t like to say Voldemort’s name is because back when everyone’s parents were fighting Voldy the first time (when Harry’s parents died and Neville’s parents were tortured, etc) he put a curse upon his name so that if anyone spoke his name aloud that was part of the resistance back then would be immediately tracked down. Saying his name out loud was essentially like putting the ring of power on in Lord of the Rings back then
Ah, this only implies in the deathly hollow
Incorrect actually. The taboo that tracks people who say his name was only put into place right when the ministry fell in Deathly Hallows.
Snape is officially Trick Daddy from now on 😂😂😂
Been waiting for this one!! This and the next one are my Favorite HP movies.
23:55 HEY! Lupin was a perfectly good, kind-hearted, cursed murderous werewolf teacher.
Honestly, with the discourse surrounding the Sequel Trilogy, I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't want to work for another big franchise again.
Fun fact: Stephen King was quoted as one saying that Dolores Umbridge is "the greatest make-believe villain to come along since Hannibal Lecter."
