Y'all are fortunate to have all of these old train tunnels scattered around. Out here on the West Coast, they have all been imploded and covered! There was a series of tunnels from the Bay Area to Santa Cruz back in the early 19th century. I found all of them after research and every one had been blown up and caved in. Sad. Stupid "insurance" reasons like most. All blowed up!
The new Avata 2 is a big upgrade over the first Avata in many ways, including signal strength. Great testing in the tunnels, and Drone Rob is a big help. Awesome video Ken, thanks for sharing.
Ken you have to find a 15 km long tunnel, put a windscreen behind a car and then fly right behind the car to set a 15 km distance record for the avata 2!
I think that the interference we encounter most with drones is all the wi-fi, cell phone signals ,garage door openers, etc .....the tunnel seems to have blocked all that out. cool video
It probably flies further in a tunnel then outside, it's basically a giant radio antenna making sure every radio wave bounces and hit your goggles. I bet you could make it the full 13 km in a tunnel like this.

I wouldn’t call it penetration since it was just bouncing off the walls and going in a straight line (like another commenter mentioned) there wasnt really anything to penetrate through
Good video. I know little about radio waves, but wouldn’t the tunnel actually channel and enhance the reception while standing right at the entrance ? If the controller/pilot was on top of or adjacent to the tunnel, would it still fare as well ?
Did you perform a Ham Unlock or anything? Which band are you on? My Avata 2 fail safed in manual at a range/area that my mini 4 traversed with no issue. Failsafe RTH got me video and control back in a few seconds. But it was definitely scary. I tried it again with 2.4 ghz and I was ok, but I was also a bit higher on my second attempt.
Ken, did you know that high frequency radio towers use waveguides (metal) to get from the output amplifiers to the antenna? This is a test of a waveguide you would get more than 13k in a strait tunnel. The meal rebar helps not detracts.
@@KenHeron Ah no not really. The transmission signal from your transmitter from where you are standing radiates in a half hemisphere. i.e. it cant go into the ground. The transmission obeys the Inverse square law. If you think of it as a hemisphere with rays radiating in all directions the individual rays will have to cover a wider path as the space they are in grows. i.e. Inverse square law. The power decrease by the square of the distance. The hemisphere that is growing means more surface area as it expands. Hence the reduction in power. Now by standing in front of the tunnel, at the point of entering the tunnel that energy reflects off the Tunnel / Waveguide back on itself. So the space it is radiating in remains constant. It's the tunnels width times its height. Hence it no longer obeys the inverse square law as the energy entering the tunnel has a consistent space that does not grow. Now I believe that most people think that it's because the tunnel is a strait line of sight. But the same effect will exist if the tunnel has lots of twists and turns. The distance the signal will propagate will depend on how much energy is absorbed reflecting off the surface of the waveguide. Twisty might be slightly less signal range (more reflections being absorbed), but not much.. Try it out. You will notice this effect in long tunnels with your phone not losing signal. It's not that the tunnels have tower antennas every mile or so. They have one or two or more repeaters in the tunnel. For redundancy not signal coverage. Nice to see I still remember things from my 8 years at the Institute of Technology, Sydney. 40 years ago. 😳 🧐😏😄 I have tried to do a layman explanation, I hope it worked OK. Its actually a little bit more complicated than that once you start getting into the "Are Photons waves or particles" still makes my head hurt. 😂

You are totally correct, a long tunnel like this even with bend. You could fly the full 13 km or to whenever your avata 2 battery runs out. Or if you fly behind a car with a windscreen to lower the drag you might even hit 20 km! I don't know any 20 km long tunnesl though. Would be a very cool experiment. The whole time I was like: ah so that's what light feels like bouncing in fibre ....
A tunnel like that is ideal for the radio waves to just bounce bounce bounce till they get to the goggles. NO different from light in a fibre cable. Bounce bounce bounce, that's why light in fibre only goes 200 000 km/s instead of 300 000 km/s
I think the flashlight could be modified to run off the drone battery which would save alot if weight... I would never go in a tunnel if its raining though... Also i was super disappointed kens car didn't 2step in the tunnel... He needs to tune that!
I'm just a simple GPS drone pilot. Your flight was so rock steady i am wondering if you flew that in FPV mode or if the A2 has a stabilization system that's effective even with no GPS
It has 4 motion sensors. Two facing down, 2 facing down and back. And then the software stabelizes. Either afterwards, with the embedded gyroflow data. Or straight away in either rock steady mode or one where it will keep the horizon flat.
Is that a better transmission system on that avata 2 than the newest mini pro ?? do the same test with a mini 3 pro ? or are they on the mini 4 pro yet ?
@@KainniaK Motion sensor- I doubt it. As for timing of radio packets- no friggin way. I'm thinking it estimates speed by analyzing power setting and pitch tilt angle.
@@rjbishop12 Yes it can time radio packets because the goggles have 4 antennas and so does the quad. That means that multipath and all the phase cancelation that comes with it can be undone The timing of radio packets is something essential for it, that's why it has a hard physical limit of 34 km. After that the system goes out of sync.

Yes, when you were in the goggles you do need a spotter, technically. You also need strobe lights on it that are visible for three statute miles. Or... Just use common sense.

That's the genious of dji digital over analog. the video signals they bounce and bounce and bounce. some packets might arrive after 5 ms, other after 50 ms. Everythign completely out of order. but the software puts it back in order and shows it. now you just got more latency. On analog you can't do that.
