Ken - if you pop the rear cover off the controller behind the throttle stick you can remove the spring tension that is centering the spring for normal/sport modes, and instead get a normal, unsprung throttle style stick like normal FPV uses. This is by design, and many DJI controllers have these sort of adjustments under the grips.

There's a reason that this thing is not advertised as a "quad". It's because it's not supposed to be. It's a hybrid meant to teach pilots who want to dip their toes into FPV. Don't treat it as a quad and your golden. I for one enjoy flying this for recreation and videography. No hate!

    • @astro8062

but any drone is a quad; quad is just short for quadcopter if it has 4 blades its a quad. it looks like in acro it can do nice videography but it will teach you very bad habbits

That's exactly what this is, Einstein. And that's exactly how they've been marketing it, Einstein.
If you want to dip your toe into fpv, get a simulator and an inexpensive quad and just go out and do it. Good grief, I've only been flying for six months and I'm already ripping it.

@@dangerous8333 What I meant to say is that "quads" are generally considered as FPV. This one's a drone, as in a Mavic drone. I've never heard of a Mavic quad or had this labelled as the DJI FPV quad. And yes I do know the difference between a drone and a quad you wet spot.

  • @danbelick

    Hi Ken,
I'm not a DJI fan, but some fact checking of the FPV manual:
    1) All DJI drones must have video recording halted before turning off, or there will be no saved video.
    2) DJI FPV must be put into NORMAL mode prior to landing. You did not land in the video, you hit the ground. I'm sorry it was damaged, and hope someone will cook up some more crashworthy landing gear for it.
Clearly this in not a drone the FPV crowd will welcome, but it is still the drone many people are waiting for. But not necessarily you. Hope DJI warranty fixes you up quick.

For those that may care the arms do not come with motors like other DJI consumer drones. You have to buy the motors separate which is actually a plus like you said.
You are actually supposed to change the throttle control to have no rebound via 2 small screws that you tighten down.
The battery is way to expensive for a freestyle drone.
It is too fragile for FPV freestyle.
It is perfect for cinematic chasing.
It is perfect for learning FPV with being able to slowly turn of the safety features and modes until you get to full manual.
It is terrible at proximity flying because it is Fra-gee-lay

I LOVE ALL THE HATE in the comments.....which are all from NON-FPVers, so basically carry NO weight in knowing WTF they are talking about.
    Thank you for this review.
    For the haters:
Comments on Poor signal - you obviously haven't seen Ken fly here before with a proper Kwad. Never had an issue with those, yet this one does. That's a point against it.
Comments on the small bump - For a GPS drone, yeah sure, that was hard. For Kwads, we hit things MUCH harder and they keep going. Another point against it.
Batteries are overpriced, sure the flight time is a little longer but not 8x more which is how much more they cost than typical lipos
Repairs are questionable and a lot that DJI is not admitting to yet.
The word FPV also carries the implication of durability which this drone does not have. DJI could have easily given this drone a carbon fiber frame, but they went with plastic. Final death point against it
This might be a gateway drug into FPV....but highly unlikely

  • @Joeyzoom
    @Joeyzoom ปีที่แล้ว +3

From the perspective of someone that only flies freestyle FPV drones, I've never flown a GPS drone at all. For me, I'd be VERY apprehensive of something like this - while it can FPV and it can GPS, but it doesn't really do either that well. However, my dad has seen me fly and wants to get into FPV but wants training wheels so he doesn't have to solder every time he's on the field. Something like this is absolutely perfect for him. He bought one last year and has been flying it periodically since then to get the feel for and concepts down for flying FPV. Now, he hasn't tried acro yet, so the drone is still completely intact with the same set of props, but he's significantly more comfortable flying and understanding the controls with goggles on. I think he is the perfect example of someone who SHOULD buy the potato.

Going against the grain here but I bought the DJI FPV drone combo the morning of the 2nd from Best Buy and I absolutely, love it. It totally rips, the picture quality and range is amazing. I love being able to do flips and barrel rolls as well as have the normal DJI easy flight modes. Of my three DJI drones, The Mavic 2, Mavic Air 2 and the DJI FPV, my favorite is the DJI DPV drone. As far as cost goes, I've spend hundreds willingly on Tiny Hawk 2's, Tiny Hawk Freestyle 2's, Scimitar 215, and a bunch of other racing drones that aren't anywhere near as capable as the DJI FPV drone but they are still fun. To say this thing isn't good is so far off. I imagine the reviewers are probably trying to save face for the other FPV drone manufacturers who are likely worried about DJI taking the majority of their business. I believe Storm offers a drone with similar capabilities but it's $600 before upgrades (and just for the drone) so this thing is in line price wise. Going to say it again, I love it. If you have the funds, I highly recommend picking one up....

RTFM, you can adjust the left stick so that it does not spring to the middle, when switching to manual mode, you have to center the right stick and lower the left one, as shown IN THE GOGGLES.
As for the auto-land, it was caused by the battery impact, nice safety feature that it lands if it detects damage, but truly a design flaw to have the battery and antenas be the first things that hit the ground. when you go around a massive concrete wall, it'll prevent wireless transmission, an analog FPV quad would likely have lost any transmission and the goggles would have completely blanked. You likely lost footage from the first flight because you shut down the battery without stopping the recording.

Not sure if I like the style, but you have saved me spending $2100, especially if the battery is as Fragile as you showed in the review. The other draw back, CASA (Australian version of the FAA) is still operating in the late 17th century. We can only fly FPV at certified model aero clubs, oh and night flying only if you are licenced and operating under a companies ReOC which has night flying exclusion. Hopefully one day CASA will catch up with the FAA

I've watched analog FPV from someone else flying it and it was like watching a bootleg VHS tape. I also want the DJI experience that I am accustomed, too, no frills and no tinkering needed. If I crash, so be it. But I bought those arm braces just in case, too. I guess I'll be smart enough to not go through doors or diving into silos at least until I'm ready both skill and money-wise.

I don't agree with Ken about this drone being a piece of sh*t, but I definitely agree the DJI FPV isn't a good choice for a first drone.
I'd go with the DJI Mini 2 with the Fly More bundle. It's only 249 grams so you don't have to register the drone with the FAA and it's really easy to use.

thanks for this review Ken, it's good to see the down sides to an FPV setup as well as the up sides. the connection issues are more of a concern to me than the mishap that led to the battery failure.
to supplement this video, could you be so kind and do one about how far the thing can go from the controller before it loses contact or at least complete control? i have a phantom 4 pro plus and have had it go up to 3km for yucks and think it could of very well gone further before it lost control, however i do have to add that i still had line of sight and was operating from a hilltop.

I've seen a few vids where fpv guys are saying similar to you Ken, "great tool great tech but not a great fpv drone you're better building your own" thing is i dont have the time or frankly the want to learn all the shit that goes with building an fpv quad much the same way I don't want to build my own PC i want it to work out the box, same with this drone i know it'll work straight out the box so that easy point of entry totally exceeds the hit on power or manoeuvrability compared to a traditional build quad, i fly a Mavic Air 2 so im sure the 'Acro Mode' on the DJI fpv will be plenty for me, once i work my way up to that skill level so im all in on this drone and i think im the target audience for this drone, people that fly Mavics and the like but want to taste fpv but dont want all the hassle that goes with it this is the point of entry, and if it leads me and others
down the fpv rabbit hole and eventually into building our own quads then its a win for the industry as a hole, thats my view anyway, love your video's btw 👍

Well, I fly the normal DJI products like the P4P and Inspire and I also fly FPV from .2.5 inch up to 7 inch. I think what many folks confuse is that this is a FPV racer or freestyle bird. It isn't. As you have said Ken, it isnt even close. It absolutely isn't a beginner bird either. IMHO your recomendation of the Mini 2 is spot on. So what is this FPV bird? It is a hybrid between the two sides. It is purpose built for more dynamic cinematic FPV. In trained hands it should be fine and it should be able to pull of shots that are difficult for our traditional FPV birds. For instance, I was flying for TV this past fall on a fly fishing segment. For one particular shot I used a Squirt V2. I was to fly down from a mountain view, duck under the tree canopy, and fly up a stream to land my shot in a hover in front of two fly fishermen. That was the establishing shot for that part of the segment. No way would I have risked a Phantom with the shot. Nor could it achieve the soaring bird style of flight needed to drop through those trees and fly up that creek. It needed to be a FPV bird and with a traditional FPV I had to choose a camera tilt for the camera I was carrying. In this case it was an Osmo Action. I chose 10 degrees. I wasn't doing any wild flying and speed wasn't the order of the day. Smooth was. Now, the 10 degree camera angle was fine until I bled of speed at the end of the shot and brought it into a hover to land the shot on the two fishermen. I hovered well, and there was minimal drift in the hover but it was evident and the framing was high on the ending shot because of the 10 degree fixed up tilt on the camera in a level hover. The editor cropped it in post and did some work on it and it came out ok. However, I like to get it right in camera as much as I can and I was dreaming that day on the way home of a fpv drone with this capability where I could have speed and a level camera and then have a speed change or pull into that hover and see my shot framing. Also, if I didn't have to take it all the way into acro mode I could even have some hover stabilization to end the shot in a nice solid hover. That is what I believe this drone was made for. I wouldn't chase drift cars or anything that risky with it. I would use a HD1XR or SkyelinerHD or something. It wont replace a Phantom or Mavic either because it isn't meant to. They have their place too. It is simply a tool to fit that space in between the two. At any rate, that is how I view it, and that is why I purchased one. I hope it isn't a POS and I hope I didn't waste my money. Time will tell. Good channel Ken. Keep up the good work.
