I think it will once Nintendo stopped selling switch games but considering that Switch 2 will be backward compatible, it might take a decade for Switch emulation to be as tolerated as SNES, GC or even WiiU.
@@efrenarevalo2025 That's kinda what I was thinking as well. Nintendo is making _zero dollars_ off of Wii U and earlier (aside from once in a while releasing a VC onto Switch), so the existence of Cemu and Dolphin doesn't hurt their present-day bottom line. Whereas *_they're still actively making Switch games_* and Yuzu was a legitimate "threat" to that... so, I can kinda understand the business perspective of why they went scorched-earth on emulators of _current gen_ consoles :/
ShadPS4 has got to be one of the most surprising and impressive developments of an emulator I have ever seen. We were still under the impression it was impossible to emulate the PS4 and then suddenly this Emulator came around and claimed to do the impossible.. and within what feels like weeks it went from running homebrew to running bloodborne!
ShadPS4's hype train brings back memories of Yuzu going from barely booting Mario Odyssey to fully playable in six months or so. It's such an exciting time
Why did it seem impossible? PS3 emulation I can see saying that because of the architecture. PS4 is a AMD Jaguar CPU PC, basically. I was expecting emulation to be the easiest of any console. This is a big part of why Sony is now willing to invest in PS4/5 games being ported to PC.
@@dragons_red From what I understand the PS4 hasn't been fully decrypted yet, so the low level instruction calls are still largely unknown. This is basically the communication between the OS/kernel, hardware and software (i.e. games). Also the PS4 uses a custom API known as GNM/GNMX, which is undocumented to the general public, so it's pretty much a guess work as to how the API functions.
@elimalinsky7069 Reverse engineering GNM library isn't really the big issue in PS4 emulation, but the overall complexity and feature set of the GPU hardware. Most of the GNM library is statically linked inside the game, and the few functions the emulator can intercept from the system library are dead simple to reimplement. The emulator has to directly parse PM4 command lists sent to the hardware, recompile the shaders, and figure out the resource layout from them since there is no high-level API to hook. In that sense it's diffrent from dxvk/proton and more akin to classic emulators. So most work is following open AMD isa/pm4/reg docs to figure out what game is trying to do
Considering how long we went without any really good Jaguar emulation I’d say BigPemu is hands down one of, if not the most impressive emulator of the last few years.
Emulation is really important to preserve the history of video games or even entire computer/console generations. I really appreciated the work the community has done to make this possible. But one emulator class that is much more important to me than any console emulation is X86 PC Emulation. The discontinued PCem project and the still ongoing 86Box are great to get back into the pre 2000 years. I am not sure if you ever have covered this in your channel, if not please consider making a dedicated video for it, because they deserve it. Also there is a really good alternative using virtualization, running windows 98 with full GPU support up to DirectX 9 using a driver solution called "SoftGPU".

@@clamojoat8543 new purchases were retired last year, but the eshop remained online for users to download their previously purchased items until earlier this year
RPCS3’s compatibility is understated. The reason it is low is because you have to dump certain files and have proof of you beating the game. Example: I have beaten Dark Souls many years ago on RPCS3 with a decent CPU and no hacks, no problem, but it is still considered ingame because I didn’t know how to extract the files needed to submit it.
Huh, interesting. Dolphin's compatibility is pretty much just user-reported afaik, so they'll just take you at your word that "hey, I was able to get all 45 Edgars and didn't notice any jank, mark Animaniacs as Perfect compat", or "pressing a certain button combo crashed not only Paper Mario but caused a BSOD, mark it as Some Issues", they don't require _proof_ (but having logfiles and video is helpful if you _did_ encounter jank)...
You also have to remember that it has to be playable on the recommended specifications (or below) for it to be considered playable. Midnight Club: Los Angeles for example is perfectly emulated via RPCS3 but it requires a very beefy CPU in order to be playable. Dark Souls is considered playable now though so there's that.
I do think it’s worth a mention that Xemu is on the verge of merging Vulcan rendering to the main branch, and you can already download test versions with Vulkan rendering. This is pretty substantial and in some cases such as MechAssault 2: Lone Wolf, has fixed unplayable games to be fully playable. In other instances of my own testing I have found Vulkan to be capable of fixing certain graphical bugs and improve performance.
I got myself a Steam Deck OLED around June 2024. I've installed emulators such as PCSX2, Duck Station, Dolphin, mGBA, and PPSSPP, and they work pretty well! I haven't tried Vita3K yet, but I do plan on using it.

The mere threat of a lawsuit from a company like nintendo is enough to destroy any emulator. Most people dont have the money to fight that sort of pressure
In addition to the money, it's also the time and the stress. A big company like Nintendo can afford to throw money at a near infinite number of lawsuits and subquent appeals until they win by attrition. Even if Yuzu or whoever ultimately won their case, the financial cost could well sink them (as it did with Bleem! many years ago) and this doesn't account for the mental toll fighting such a case would take on the development team.
Ever since I learned about emus decades ago, it amazes me how people are able to make them in the first place. My respect goes out to anyone able to make these. Thank you all for the effort and your incredible skills.

Yeah, I can't overstate how much better the PCSX2 UX overhaul is. It's an absolute game changer. And it's not just about how easy it is to change settings (which is much, much easier), but also how much nicer it is to be able to make custom input profiles and emulator settings for each game. It genuinely went from one of my least favorite emulators to use, to one of my absolute favorites
i dunno you should of seen the scene back in the 90s, emulating gameboy and NES was thought to be impossible, when NESticle got released it really changed the whole game

Back in October I tried out the PCSX2 emulator on a mini PC and it was finally the kick I needed to buy a new PC and now I just got RCPS3 running last night.
I couldn't agree more regarding RPCS3. It's emulating the most complex console ever made and the progress of the emulator is outstanding. I don't know how the RPCS3 team do it, but I'm very happy they do.
Oh they would give a damn. They will still dmca original nes games. Now they might not sue you for doing last gen emulators, but as soon as a game is involved they're not happy and will make sure its removed and more likely if they could identify you easily they probably would take you to court.
Big PEMU is huge for preserving the Jaguar. Especially now that it mostly supports Jag CD games. I've also seen that it improves the performance of Checkered Flag, making it actually playable.
My personal favorite emulators that I played around with this year are touchHLE (iOS) and Infuse (Zeebo). I love these obscure platforms such as Zeebo getting an emulator so that I can play around with exclusive games that I never even knew existed. Sure the compatibility is low for both of those at the moment, but I am eagerly waiting to see where they go in the future. And of course ShadPS4 is fun, but I'll wait for it to develop further before I dive into Bloodborne and eventually I want it to run The Order 1886 as well. I know a lot of people disliked that game, but I personally enjoyed it. I wish that one day we'll get a proper Android emulator for PC as well. People who work on emulators are truly the most amazing people out there. They have brought so much joy and happiness to people all over the world.
RPCS3 and PCSX2 will always be my go to but this year ShadPS4 deserves the win on this because of how much they got in a few months, when i saw the progress on Bloodborne i was shocked how quickly it got running same thing with CEMU day one when Zelda came out, the CEMU team worked so fast and now everything runs perfect. amazing work for the Emulator devs, i might check this Vita3k one day, i didn't knew Vita had a emulator

PS2 and PS1, Saturn, 3DO games you can just install an optical drive into your PC or connect one off the shelf a very cheap one via USB and you're all set, it's also easy to salvage an optical drive out of an old trash laptop and put it into a cheap USB enclosure. Good call on BigPEmu; I just found out it's been converted to linux and for those wanting to try the jag this really is the only way (aside from spending loads on a real one). that said there are only a couple of decent exclusives - AvP and Tempest 2000 (the Jag version of that is the only one made by Llamasoft; the conversions on other systems were made by other developers and aren't the same, or rather don't play as well).. Rayman's pretty good too.. Ok there are a few decent games but most of those are conversions from other systems which are usually as good if not better than the jag version as they just ported the M68k code to it (although Zool 2 on Jag is the only one that has music AND sfx... remember that? when you had to choose between the two?)
I finished the entirety of Bloodborne + DLC on ShadPS4 yesterday. You only need to install a couple of mods in order for Cainhurst to work properly and to gain access to the Nightmare Frontier without crashing. Other than that, the game is fully playable start to finish.

I still remember when I saw one of Simply Austin's videos for the first time and when I wanted to revisit his channel once more, I bumped into Austin Evans by mistake and that's how I ended up knowing about the latter from there on out. 😅
I wish we had a better version of something like RetroArch. I'd like an all-in-one program to manage and run all these emulators, as well as sync saves across devices. Right now it's a headache juggling them all on multiple devices.
There's technically EmuDeck, but the windows support is only somewhat there, and it's kinda annoying having to use their shortcuts, rather than clicking the exe yourself. It's really made for a set top TV setup rather than a PC.
You could try some front ends, I do not know if they are capable of sync the saves as I play only on my PC, but at least they do about all-in-one, you can run all your PC/emulator games only in one place (front end), first that comes to mind is Launchbox (which I use, also has some cool features as counting the time played) or second Playnite (I think it is totally free, I have never used this one actually)

I'd like to make a case for DuckStation, a PS1 emulator. You'll need a BIOS of a PS1, yeah, but even then, tracking one down isn't that much of a big deal since they're readily available online. You can upscale to widescreen, you can up the texturing to a considerable degree, even netplay's a thing. It's also seeing updates every once in a blue moon that keeps this thing running like a champion. And hey, if a game's giving you a rash of shit, cheats are also implemented into it per game! You'll have to be careful though, because things can get a bit wacky if you do too many of them at once!

@crystalwater505 It does a lot of stuff after the og playstation, N64, Dreamcast, PSP, DS, 3DS, PS2 and GC/Wii from memory but I'd argue that some of these would yield better results using standalone Emulators. Retroarch does cover such a vast amount of consoles and computers, though, so it is essential for me.
Unless the emus aren't playable on portable devices aka Android and Steam Deck , the switch does not suffer from opposition. The moment Yuzu was playing on Steam Deck i knew the end was coming. Now for anything older than Switch there is no point to hunt it down.
Oh for Nintendo there is still a reason. It's retro games and OST are being put on NSO. So it still might get around to protecting it's intellectual property. Didn't Retro Game Corps receive a TH-cam strike for featuring footage of an old Mario game?
@skycloud4802 yes it can be true. But there is a difference between the home user and streamer when they engage in emulation. The 1st one makes money or gains fame through using intellectual property (?) and can be said that in a way promotes piracy. The 2nd just plays the game in his home and none knows it. For me , my ps4 with bloodborne is in Greece and now that i live in nl i downloaded bloodborne and finished it in my laptop. So did i cause any harm for sony ? The same for Nintendo.
I feel it's still limited to how well it peforms with different specs on pc, even though compatibility is improving, I guess there will be a time where like the PS2 emulator will start working with more hardware and will become more accessible

Mednafen with the MedGui is also really good for Saturn emulation, it needs a bit tinkering at times, but nothing an emulator afficionado can't handle.
Come on, MVG: justifiably or not, the Switch emulators were bullied into closing doors. Everyone remembers "Sony v Connectix" and what happened to Bleem! No one wants to go into trial against a multi-billion dollar company.
my guess is that nintendo only went after switch emulators because they would very likely be able to play Switch2 games without any larger amount of work. you should buy your migswitch right now before it gets expensive if it works for NSW2 :D
@naytny5819 well only 10 games are left that are exclusive to ps4 . All others are ported to pc. And yes there are many games that are yet released both on on ps4 pro and ps5. Because lets be honest , not many people play on 4k tvs. Ps4 pro can easily handle games that are in 1080p and 1440p.

I fully support emulators for old, unsupported hardware. However, I absolutely agree with Nintendo in going after Switch emulators. It's a current gen system and Nintendo deserve all the protection they want. But as soon as they stop producing it and then stop supporting it, or the games with backwards compatibility, emulate away!

So cool to see PCSX2 get updates. It was an emulator i tried to use a ton back in the day and most of the games had some kind of bug or disturbance that made me not use it. Hats off to the team. Also cool to see you include Jak 3, it's a game that means a lot to me. It's receiving a PC port sometime next year that allows for mod support which is amazing
It's all u post lol
That PC port is via the OpenGOAL project, isn’t it? I’ve been following it since their early days, and I have to say it’s amazing the progress they made on both Jak 1 and Jak 2.
The emulator has come a long way. My backup of Way Of The Samurai 1 used to not play and now it runs flawless. The team there really did their thing, hats off to them.
It's the GOAT emulator if you ask me, absolutely incredible.
Pcsx2 really had a massive glowup
Parrapa the rapper 2 had alot of graphical issues on the older versions of pcsx2 that essentially made the game unplayable and as soon as the nightly releases came out almost every issue i had just vanished.
It's a bit sad there was no mention of Melon DS, which recently reached its 1.0RC with LAN support after 8 years of development, and Azahar 3DS which resulted by the team up of several different developers, like PabloMK7 who brought online support.
Nintendo wasn't all about the switch, and I feel like the scene it's going to rise from the ashes...
But Azahar 3DS has no public release yet, how can he say is one of the best if nobody has been able to test it?
theres always next year
@@Hoytehablodecause aside azahar which other 3ds emulator is as good??

Right now the best 3DS emulator is either the old LIME 3DS or Citra MK7 by pablo.
They joined and created Azahar, so we are waiting to see what comes out of that.
It’s good but we had drastic for like 2 centuries. It kills the novelty when there’s an alternative that is so much better it’s practically incomparable.
I used to watch your videos while walking home from school as a kid. Thanks for getting me into emulation and console jailbreaking :]
The top of the honorable mentions list, HAS to be Duckstation.
One of the most complete, widely compatible, and best performing emulators out there!
Mednafen has the same good with open source, but Duckstation is Close Source sadly. Still both Emulators are good for ps1 Emulation.
@@AntiGrieferGames The Duckstation github is still active and you can fork and develop from it without threat of legal action, it's de-facto open source still

agree DuckStation easily the best PS1 emulator
personally rcps3 still blows me away i just wish the og xbox and 360 got that much love
Xenia has brought 360 emulation forward by leaps and bounds this year. I'd keep up on that one for sure...
Xemu has really good compatibility already
Xenia canary has gotten pretty good in the past year (they should definitely fix the constant crashing on dx12 tho) and xemu has been improving recently (sadly conker live and reloaded didnt work well for me on xemu for some reason)
I've been waiting for whenever Xemu finishes the vulkan renderer they've been working on for the past few months
Xemu and Xenia have been making huge advancements lately. Gears of War 2 is very much playable now.
Honestly Yuzu is still up there. Can still play a bunch of the newest games without a single dev working on it. Hopefully it continues someday
Yuzu is owned by Nintendo now. But ryujinx is being continued though
@@freewilliam93 i thought ryujinx was also being stopped?
@cool3865 someone else has stepped in to continue it.
ShadPS4 has got to be one of the most surprising and impressive developments of an emulator I have ever seen. We were still under the impression it was impossible to emulate the PS4 and then suddenly this Emulator came around and claimed to do the impossible.. and within what feels like weeks it went from running homebrew to running bloodborne!
the progress was so fast I literally thought it had to be malware, it's so impressive
For who uses CRT the Wii still a beast with great 8-16 bit emulators displaying 240p over component cable. And the Wiistation for PS1 games still being update.
my wii crashes a lot. maybe bad luck ? i tho' the code on wii is very unstable/unfinished
@@MrDesillu Are you saying with the Wiistation or in general? A small amount the games I got black screen on wiistation. Retroarch crashes a lot. Not64 also have some N64 games that not work. But other emulators and the system itself run fine. Maybe you need to reinstall and update all the system hack and homebrew. is amazing how back in the days we needed a modchip and later a simple browser/ip hack do all the work. Also check the Sonic Mania 240p por for Wii.
Yeap, killer combo.
I played a bunch of NES and gameboy games with Wiimednafen. It's pretty great.

Man PCSX2, I've been using that emulator for SO many years now. I don't think I've ever had a game breaking bug since the olden days.
Sonic the Fighters, of all games, has had an online resurgence due to RCPS3. A real niche community suddenly expanding has been real fun to watch.
I got myself a Steam Deck OLED around June 2024. I've installed emulators such as PCSX2, Duck Station, Dolphin, mGBA, and PPSSPP, and they work pretty well! I haven't tried Vita3K yet, but I do plan on using it.
but how do you store all these games if steam deck only use 1 tb card PS2 games r big
@Gloryboyquan PS2 games are not particularly big. 1tb internal SSD and 1tb SD works just fine and I emulate everything on Steam Deck.
@@Gloryboyquanps2 games are really not that big
@@Gloryboyquan 1TB is already big enough for retro games. At most, some can reach up to 4.4GB, and even then, you can still trim said games close to half their size or more. I have an Odin 2 Pro with 256GB internal memory and another 512GB microSD storage. I have games from NES all the way to Wii and still have 100GB to spare. I'm pretty sure you're not gonna be playing _all_ of the PS2's library anyway.
@@Gloryboyquan i have close to 100 PS2 games so far, stored on a 500GB HDD, i still have some space left, like around 20% of the drive left. NES/Snes ROMS are at most, a couple of Mb in size. The mere threat of a lawsuit from a company like nintendo is enough to destroy any emulator. Most people dont have the money to fight that sort of pressure
this only happen's when one of the DEV's does a Come at me bro , mental brake down attitude , GBA emulator's are still around
And it destroys so much hard work.
It's oligarchic bullying.
Isn't pocket world fighting that stupid patient protection case?
In addition to the money, it's also the time and the stress. A big company like Nintendo can afford to throw money at a near infinite number of lawsuits and subquent appeals until they win by attrition. Even if Yuzu or whoever ultimately won their case, the financial cost could well sink them (as it did with Bleem! many years ago) and this doesn't account for the mental toll fighting such a case would take on the development team.
Ever since I learned about emus decades ago, it amazes me how people are able to make them in the first place.
It started my interest in coding, but sadly I'll never have skills to contribute to any of them, as I also now learned that I'm bad at coding overall.
My respect goes out to anyone able to make these. Thank you all for the effort and your incredible skills.

I have to give credit to MVG for his work on the OG xbox emulators. Still running smooth to this day. 👍

I've been using RPCS3, PCSX2, and Vita 3K like crazy this year. All of the developers should be commended for their stellar work.
I would be really interested in Worst Emulators of 2024. I don't follow the emulator scene very much but even so I still watched many controversies in the community this year.
17:42 Finally i can enjoy "Where did you learn to fly" in 4K60. Thanks BigP!
I think a classic emulator that wasn't mentioned is Dolphin for GameCube and Wii. It keeps getting better and better.
If dolphin stopped development 5 years ago I would still consider it one of the most complete, stable and accurate emulators ever made, but the fact they are still actively updating it is amazing
I love it when you do these "state of emulation" videos. Good stuff MVG!
Oh wow Rich Whitehouse, he was one of the developers of Star Wars Jedi Academy and he chats with us sometimes in irc
Emulators still have the same magic they had when I first found out about then on the psp. Even after using them for 20ish years, they still amaze me.
i dunno you should of seen the scene back in the 90s, emulating gameboy and NES was thought to be impossible, when NESticle got released it really changed the whole game
PSMove is final frontier of RPCS3. I keep holding out hope I can play PSmove games in bigscreen VR, with 3D enabled, Resistance 3, Killzone 3, House of the Dead, and Resident Evil 5.

I'm currently enjoying Wolfenstein 3D on BigPEmu. BigPE has introduced me to Jaguar library and I'm having a really great time with it. Thanks for covering it and big thanks to the Dev.
Back in October I tried out the PCSX2 emulator on a mini PC and it was finally the kick I needed to buy a new PC and now I just got RCPS3 running last night.
Quick question man, like where do you get your roms in RCPS3?
I couldn't agree more regarding RPCS3. It's emulating the most complex console ever made and the progress of the emulator is outstanding. I don't know how the RPCS3 team do it, but I'm very happy they do.
I honestly think Nintendo wouldn't given a damn about Switch emulation if it wasn't competing with their current gen selling system.
And then seeing those games perform better on all sorts of hardware that it wasn't designed for and so quickly. They did not like that lol.
they exposed themselves a lot, im surprised they got that far
Oh they would give a damn. They will still dmca original nes games. Now they might not sue you for doing last gen emulators, but as soon as a game is involved they're not happy and will make sure its removed and more likely if they could identify you easily they probably would take you to court.
They certainly do, look at dolphin not making it to steam, what happened to vimms lair, look at competitions from the melee community
They wouldn't have a problem to begin with if they'd just release their games on PC. They always prefer the path of most resistance.
Been emulating since the 90's, and it's still one of the wonders of the world imo.
Great video, btw.

Rayman's pretty good too..
RetroArch is somewhat not recommneded for beginners. I prefer Standalone Emulators.
Lutris isn't terrible for this tbh, the problem is just that it has a limited number of emulators supported and is missing a lot of key ones.

Did MVG say in any of this other videos, or comments what brand, model number and retailer, his magnificent glasses come from ?

@@blad... As in Nintendo and Breath of the Wild where it was playable in cemu from day one. Of course it became perfect 3 months later. If sony continues to issue games to both ps4 and ps5 and those are playable day one in Shadps4 then they have a motive to hunt down shadps4.
Great video Lantus! please next time write the games titles on screen
Its a real pity Simple64 doesnt support retroachivements.
Thanks a lot for the updates !
WHAT IS LOVE?

I fully support emulators for old, unsupported hardware. However, I absolutely agree with Nintendo in going after Switch emulators. It's a current gen system and Nintendo deserve all the protection they want. But as soon as they stop producing it and then stop supporting it, or the games with backwards compatibility, emulate away!
Fantastic episode with tons of information. Thank you!
nice video mvg. i follow emulation since 2001 and can't remember a better year than 2024.
i have never heard of simple64. Thanks for the video
Can I make a request? I would really love it if you could put the name of the game that you are showing on the screen when you are showing gameplay footage for an emulator. Sometimes, I see a game that looks like a lot of fun in your videos, but I don’t know what it is to go look it up.
