Lord Elrond is probably my favorite ruler in all the book he is kind wise and stern all at the same time. Also he seems like a guy that would sit down and talk to you about anything, no matter how trivial and treat your problem like it is important because he understands it is impotent to you
It's easy to forget how incredibly old Galadriel is; she was around before even the First Age began, before the Two Trees were destroyed, before the Silmarils were made, before Morgoth was even known as Morgoth. If not counting the Maia and the Ents (and the mysterious things like the Watcher in the Water), she is the oldest living thing in Middle-Earth by far.
De Brickashaw I've heard many things about him, such as, he's Eru Iluvitar, or Tolkien himself, or that he is all of Arda embodied into a single physical being.
Cirdan was born in Cuivienen. He was first named Nowe and together with Galadriel's maternal grand-uncle Elwe, later called Thingol of Doriath, they established the first Teleri settlements in Beleriand. So probably Cirdan's older.
Thank you for all you do man. Your Middle Earth series has been amazing to me. I'm not that good of a reader so getting these summaries of the history and lore of Middle Earth has been really helpful and enjoyable :)
@ian hayes Problem with that is that I have AD/HD... meaning that my short attention span makes it really annoying to both read and listen to something for any length of time. These short summaries are way better for me because of that.
I know you heard that before but as great as those summaries are they are not nearly as amazing as the words in the books, he has to leave out so much of the story to make these videos short and simple. I went with audiobooks, 30 minutes sessions each time were the best that i could do and it was well worth it.
shitjezchrist I know very well that it's worth it to read the books or listening to audiobooks but it just gets extremely irritating when you need to rewind every 2 minutes cause your mind starts to wander. I find long sessions of listening or reading extremely hard to concentrate on.
It'd be cool to see a video regarding the more transient characters and creatures from the books, such as 'The Watcher in the Water' and 'Goldberry' (who often gets overlooked in favour of Tom Bombadil). This would probably mean having to delve into the appendices, of course, but I think it would make for an interesting watch. :)
I just discovered your videos and loved them. They answered so many questions Ive had for a long time since reading LoTR. Above all, learning about Tolkien mythology through your videos was just as exciting as my first introduction into LoTR. Appreciate your time and effort, keep it up!
This is just what I've been needing, tried to read the silmarillion or however in elementary school obviously failed but I was stubborn and tried when told I'd have difficulty. Never went back and grew up loving LOTR, and now on a whim I find this playlist of the 76 vids. Whatever number this is, one day lol. Nonstop since I found it. Amazing work! The artwork is perfect for the storytelling too!
What a wonderful video on the backgrounds of Galadriel and Elrond. Gimli's request makes more sense to me now. Also, your artwork is beautiful - thank you!
Galadriel had two extra names that you didn't mention: in her younger days in valinor she used to be call "Nerwen(man-maiden)" by Eärwen and her name galadriel originates from Alatáriel.
Wait, so if Elrond chose to live as a elf, and his brother as a human, and his brother became high king of Numeanor does that mean Elendil was related to Elrond since Elendil was the heir of Numeanor? and by blood that would make Isildur and Aragorn related to Elrond even if by alittle, and that means Aragorn is related to Arwen?
They are about as closely related at the end of the day as you personally are to most of the people that share your ethnic background 800-1000 or so years ago.
Theri4444 No, that's incorrect. Galadriel has one daughter and three grandchildren, one of them being Arwen. Galadriel is Elrond's mother in law, while Aragorn is a descendant Elrond's brother Elros. So they are in no way related. In Tolkien's universe, a marriage between a man and an elf is a rare occurance. There are three cases in total, Aragorn and Arwen being one of them. So a man so recently descendant from an elf is pretty much impossible in Aragorn's time.
"Timeless characters." timeless is right, I keep forgetting that the elves are immortal, or at least what immortality entails, Galadriel must be ancient if she was born during the time of the trees!
Elves don't live forever, they just don't die of old age. Not even universes live forever, and presumably the vast majority of the friends and family of elves, are other elves.
blazednlovinit Don't forget what Tolkien called human mortality -- "the gift of men." (It's important to remember that Tolkien was a Christian, and while this tale is not analogous, his faith did affect, and helped shape the world he created.)
This covers an awful lot of info but I would also mention that when she dwelt in Thingol's kingdom she also "apprenticed', if you will, under Melian -- or at least that is how I always read into it. Already an exceedingly potent elf lord, this proximity to a Maia actively employing her powers in Middle Earth probably enhanced G's own "magic" by a fair bit.
About Aragorn's sword, I always got the impression that Aragorn carried the two pieces of the sword in his scabbard, at least that is what it says in the Lord of the Rings when the hobbits meet him in their room at the Prancing Pony. So the scene in the movie where the sword is laid in twenty pieces is not correct in my opinion.
I mean, in the books Anduril is forged right when they set out from Rivendell, and not right before Aragorn goes to Dunharrow, so the movies change a lot of stuff around.
I read somewhere that Galadriel's act of refusing the One Ring was also what earned her the right to return to the Undying lands. Has anyone else seen this or read it and know where it is, if it is?
Yes I've heard something similar, but I also forget where. She was a part of the Noldor revolt against the Valar and was only allowed back after some act of grace. I think it was her refusal of the One Ring and probably her aid in helping the ring bearer to destroy the One Ring. I think destroying Sauron was a very big deal to the Valar.
It is but she denied the invitation to go to Aman AGES BEFORE THE RING EVER EXISTED. And she would never leave until Morgoths Lieutenant was destroyed and taken back to Valinor to be judged by his peers.
Yes true. But their purpose in being created was to tame the wild middle earth that was created and fight back and destroy the evil morgoth created. Then prepare it for men to take over then leave back to their eternal islands. So it's just interesting to think of them fighting among each other and their clans and seeking gems etc. But yes. They could go against their design just like morgoth did in the creation of it all.
Zach Stevens Tolkien was a christian, and the principle of freedom and personal accountability is very much at the heart of christian theology, so making a few elements, or even entire nations, go rogue and having redemption stories for some of them, is an example of the writer writing about himself, and his world, through projective storytelling.
Agreed. Well said sir. I still would enjoy watching a video more in depth with charts going throughout the ages of the growth and fall of the elfin races in all parts of middle earth, Showing their clans and those who fled from their purpose etc.
I see. I think Cirdan and Celeborn of Middle-Earth are older than Galadriel, however have they been to Valinor and seen the Two Trees? Wasn't Cirdan at least born in Valinor?
Great video, but I have a small correction for you to make. At the time of The Hobbit Aragorn was only 10 or 11 years old. He fell in love with Arwen after the events of that book.
You are correct, but occasionally I don't place things in complete chronological order if it makes more sense for the comprehension of the video. I didn't want to keep going back to Aragorn and Arwen, since the video is about Elrond and Galadriel.
If Aragorn was in his 80's around the time of the War of the Ring & The Hobbit took place 60 years prior to that wouldn't Aragorn be in his 20's at the time?
+Jaidabecca Fellowship starts 60years after the Hobbit, but a little under 20 years pass between Bilbo's 111th birthday and the beginning of Frodo's journey. The movies condense it because a two decade timeskip half an hour in would have broken up the flow and undermined the drama too much.
Jaidabecca Literally the only reason i was able to correct you was i had the exact same thought like a month ago, which prompted me to reread the books and realize my mistake.
Nice work! I understand how hard it can be to condense this subject. If you had mentioned Maglor as the early caretaker of Elrond and Elros that would have required you explain who Maglor was besides one of the Sons. It would be fun to debate with you sometime.
Tristan Rogge Legolas was an elven prince. Part of the fellowship of the ring. Here you go. Not much more is known about him apart from the main story.
I actually give praise to the elves, cause to me as a human living for thousands of years must be mentally challenging. I wonder what they did to keep busy and not bored all those years. I know from lore they did practice in ways like using bow and swordfights, but still i cant see how one could just constantly do the same thing for such a long span. I personally would like the prolonged life, maybe like 150 or 200 years but would not want to be immortal to see the world crumble.
PS it wont crumble. And the mens history was whiped by Morgoth and their immortality corrupted by Morgoth ages ago before entering middle earth. Arda has a huge history, the world of Eà reshaped like 3 times and it matches the three songs of the Ainur and the three ages of middle earth. Dagor Dagorath is also part of the song as well and then a 4th song will be sung by all the ainur and all the races. Aule and his dwarves will remake the world anew.
Everytime I am reminded of the greatness of the elves, I again ask why Eru considered man to be his greatest creation. Then I remember what we have that the elves do not: Desperation in the face of mortality. Desperation does wonders to the human psyche. Hope. Dread. Ingenuity. Depression. Courage.
Awe don't say that... :/ :) their is so much lore here I'm hoping you keep going for as long as you can if you keep getting the support and have the time. I'm fully in to at least your lotr videos. Great stuff man. Keep it up. Tolkien was quite a wise man and writer. He did write his first book the hobbit for kids though and it was just a hobby of his. He did the more adult lotr books and created all this epic fantasy. I think a lot had to do with ww2 though and his writing to inspire and help those affected by the way to see and hope for a brighter future and how to build it which he hints at in his quotes and books. He thought his other works were far more important to dwell on. I'm sure he would be shocked to see how the lotr lore has changed epic fantasy fiction and how much it affected people. These videos definately help for quick research vs loads of reading. Lol.
Feanor was Galadriel's Uncle not her grandfather. Galadriel was the daughter of Finarfin who was the youngest brother of Feanor and Fingolfin. Their father was Finwe who was one of the three witnesses of the Two Trees.
Hi there, great vids. They totally help fill in the blanks for some questions I have. I do have some questions that I was hoping that you could shed some light on. After the destruction of the one ring, what did Legolas and Gimli do? Did they go on there journey to Mirkwood and The Caverns of Helms Deep? When I was reading that in The Two Towers that they promised each other to travel with each other I thought that would make another great little video if there was any good info on it.
Yes, after the war, the two of them traveled together for some time, visiting Fangorn Forest and the Glittering Caves. Eventually the two traveled to Valinor together, with Gimli being the first Dwarf to do so.
KenTheSith after the war they stay in Minas Tirith for a while as Aragorn rebuilds Gondor with Gandalf at his side. Gimli helps Aragorn find the original Elendimir , Isildur's Valinorean brow stone that was lost when he was killed. It is then worn on high occasions in place of the Elessar. Legolas invites some Mirkwood Elves down to Ithillien (Faramir's land) and they turn it into a beautiful forest. Gimli also brings Dwarves to the Glittering Caves and becomes their lord, while also helping Aragorn rebuild the gates of Minas Tirith with mithril and stonemasons. After Aragorn passes away (and Merry & Pippin also) Legolas builds a ship in Ithillien and sails down the Anduin to go across the Sea. The lore says he took Gimli (by now near 250, typical lifespan of a Dwarf) , somehow getting permission to do so from the Valar. We assume he makes it and reunites with Elrond, Gandalf and Celeborn.
I've been trying to convince my friend that aragorn and arwen are related and aragorn is an half elf but he didnt listen to me thanks for making this video for me to rub it in his face :D
Aragorn is NOT a half-elf. Aragorn very distantly has elvish blood from Elros, like 57 times removed. He's way way away from being half-elf. Elrond and Arwen are half-elven, Elros was half-elven. Aragorn is a proper man. What you're right about is Aragorn and Arwen are related. However that relationship is so distant to be virtually unrelatable. They are about as related to one another as you are to most people of your ethnicity that lived in the first century. Arwen is like Aragorn's cousin 57 times removed. They are so distantly related there is effectively zero inbreeding going on.
Truly. Isn't he the oldest elf on Middle-Earth at the end of the Third Age? Were they any elves in Arda (like Valinor) that were older than Cirdan? Is Cirdan the oldest living elf on Arda at the end of the Third Age?
It wasn't shown in the movies sadly ;-; The books desribe the wedding much better, like half an army of elves attended the wedding. The entire court of rivendell +- 150 elves, Then the court of Caras Galadhon which was like 200 elves. And on top of that Elrond, Galadriel, Celeborn, Elrohir, Elladan and Glorfindel (Glorfindel being the only one shown in the movies albeit unnamed and without any lines of text)
Kawaii Stefan I've heard that that Glorfindel is popularly considered to be the best warrior of elves of all time based on his feats? Did that Glorfindel ever live in Middle-Earth, I don't know his story very well?
Glorfindel lives in Middle-Earth. He's present at the council of Elrond, where they decide what to do with the ring. He died in his battle with a Balrog, but was reincarnated by the Valar due to his heroics.
I understand about the reincarnated Glorfindel being at the Council of Elrond and being in that story of TLoTRs, but I meant was the first incarnation of Glorfindel ever a resident of Middle-Earth?
Enjoy the silmarillion, children of Hurin and other books via spotify and such! Read Of Beren And Luthien too along with children of Hurin, these are classics that go beyond the maneur literature has become. His works were to revive old ancient knowledge and bring culture back to England and show them their heirtage!

Cirdan is definitely older, Celeborn probably. There also may be other very old Noldor left in Rivendell.
Tom Bombadil was said to be older than all the elves
De Brickashaw I've heard many things about him, such as, he's Eru Iluvitar, or Tolkien himself, or that he is all of Arda embodied into a single physical being.
Tyler Heulitt I don't subscribe to this theory personally. I just think he's a Valar who inhabits middle earth.
Cirdan was born in Cuivienen. He was first named Nowe and together with Galadriel's maternal grand-uncle Elwe, later called Thingol of Doriath, they established the first Teleri settlements in Beleriand. So probably Cirdan's older.

Live as an elf or die as a man? Hmmm, let me think about this.

Related in a distant way but not by the same bloodline at all man.
Feanor was Galadriel's Uncle not her grandfather. Galadriel was the daughter of Finarfin who was the youngest brother of Feanor and Fingolfin. Their father was Finwe who was one of the three witnesses of the Two Trees.
Was Elwe Finwe's father?
00:17... Discord-Sound ftw
I want to see a video about Melian. I also want to see a video about the Elven kings.
i LOVE YOUR VIDS MAN !!!
You should make these into podcasts!
0 dislikes !!! Great video
Well by fact Feanor created the three silmaril because Galadriel refused to gave him some of her hair :D
Yes she gave Gimli her hair but not her uncle Feanor lol
Have you ever thought about doing an episode on Treebeard?
Well done, thank you
i would love to see a battle between legolas and glorfindel to see who's stronger
Glorfindel easily, he was an elf-lord.
Legolas wont have a chance unless he got time to study and practice all there is to learn in Valinor.
TheExploringSeries may I suggest that u keep up the good work !! And maybe do something on the fellowship of the ring
And when Gimli got to Valinor, he had an affair with Galadriel, and Celeborn got jealous.
talk about hard to please father-in- low! ;))) Nice one,Elrond. "Yeah, you can have my daughter in marriage AFTER you become KING!"
huge hands grinding ice
Galadriel is technically Elrond’s mother in law because Elrond married her daughter Celebrian, making Galadriel Arwen’s grandma.
Anybody else notice that he was holding an exact duplicate of Conan's sword from the the 80s films?
Wait I thought in the book Elrond tells merry and pippin they are going. Not reluctant.
Galadriel is elrond's mother in law. Scaterring
That is why she and Elrond doesn't get along well.
damned, i didnt know Elrond was a descendant of Beren and Luthien.
Where do you get the pictures from? They are all so beautiful and as close to possible as what is described in the Books.
Fan art and deviant Art... Tolkien fandom is big...
At 0:16 when you say middle earth, I believe there is a discord notification sound. Not sure
Gil- Gaah-lad
Do MORIA
yo dude you should do the nations of men and their history
Many of the illustrations are gloriously evocative and suitably mythical. One or two not so much... Anyway, great series.
They are so distantly related there is effectively zero inbreeding going on.
wise indeed
Love the video's.
What about Cirdan?
Truly. Isn't he the oldest elf on Middle-Earth at the end of the Third Age? Were they any elves in Arda (like Valinor) that were older than Cirdan? Is Cirdan the oldest living elf on Arda at the end of the Third Age?
Galadriel attended the wedding of Aragorn and Arwen? Was that shown in the Return of the King movie? If so I missed it.
You need to read the books.
I didn't know Danny Mcbride made LoTR videos on youtube
is there video about ELROS
TAR-MINYATUR or will there be in future
So does that make Elrond Aragorn's great, great (however many greats) uncle?
Peter Holden yes
57 "greats" I hear.
such..reckless hate.......who would be so cruel to name their son Finrod......my sympathies.
Elrond, Galadriel and Celebrimbor are/were the greatest elves in Middle Earth
What about Cirdan, he was older than them all?
Yeah, no. Glorfindel, who killed a Balrog and was reincarnated because he was such a fucking badass, is the greatest.
Kawaii Stefan
I've heard that that Glorfindel is popularly considered to be the best warrior of elves of all time based on his feats? Did that Glorfindel ever live in Middle-Earth, I don't know his story very well?
Glorfindel lives in Middle-Earth. He's present at the council of Elrond, where they decide what to do with the ring. He died in his battle with a Balrog, but was reincarnated by the Valar due to his heroics.
I understand about the reincarnated Glorfindel being at the Council of Elrond and being in that story of TLoTRs, but I meant was the first incarnation of Glorfindel ever a resident of Middle-Earth?
Funny in the films Elrond and Galadriel weren't at the wedding.
there was no wedding in the films, they met again at Aragorn's coronation and Elrond was in fact there, he was standing behind Arwen
What kind of power did the 3 elven rings actually have?
Many very well done videos already exist. Happy hunting.
can you please make more middle earth vids
could you do one on melian please!
0:17 there's a discord sound effect in there lol
What about Ecthelion?
How did i not know elrond was just half elf...
Enjoy the silmarillion, children of Hurin and other books via spotify and such! Read Of Beren And Luthien too along with children of Hurin, these are classics that go beyond the maneur literature has become. His works were to revive old ancient knowledge and bring culture back to England and show them their heirtage!
Diablo game series? It's a wonderful world!
Hi Can i request that make a story of Thranduil and Legolas
Favorite D&D character?...
Admittedly I may just be a little weird, but does anyone else think that "She showed her ring of power to Frodo" sounds dirty?
no
and yes, you may be
Honestly. Grow some respect.
I'm confused is Thranduil arwens father ? Or is elrond
Why does Elrond look like Elvis?
Because he's the Middle Earth's King or Rock and Roll!
You can't marry her until you become the king..... Aragorn (hmm) HOLD MY FUCKING BEER
XDD SO FUNII YOU MAEK THE SAME OLD JOKE AGAINNN DOESNT EVEN MAKE SENSE IN THIS CONTEXT BUT LMAO RANDOMMMMM XDDD
Where does the white ship go again?
Henry Johnston Valinor
To the nearest In N Out
Tom Bombadil
Fair enough
Btw what's an in n out
fast food burgers
Live as a crappy human or an awesome Elf....gee let me think it over.
hmm....nope still not sold on it.
Vajra_Asura the only elf to have been reborn was Glorfindel.
StrangeViolette No, all elves are reborn after they die. Glotfindel was the only 1to return to middle Earth
An elf wouldn't like your statement. You get to go beyond the world and become pure again and morgoth cannot corrupt your purpose anymore.
They reached heights of the Noldor in many ways, specially the Numenoreans. Man, read the debate between Angrod and Andreth, or was it Aegnor? Anyway. This is deep stuff. Can you handle it?
Is the shadow of mordor story non cannon?
no its not cannon
ok cheers
It contradicts a lot of lore
What is the "shadow of mordor" story? That term doesn't ring a bell.
Not cannon at all. Just read all the books, silmarillion, book of lost tales, children of hurin, of beren and luthien. Read on audio book on spotify. Become amazed.
