When Tolkein first met Edith, he was instantly smitten with her. One day she took him out to the woods and danced barefoot for him (where Luthien's dancing scene came from). Also, her father would not allow him to marry Edith until she turned 18. He waited until the clock struck midnight on her 18th birthday, then wrote her a letter asking her to marry him. When she died, he had "Luthien" inscribed on her grave; when he died two years later, his kids had "Beren" inscribed on his, which was a part of the same plot. I've always loved that story.
When Thingol told him he needed to go get a Silmaril from Morgoth, something the elves have been trying to do for hundreds of years, Beren says, "For little price do Elven-kings sell their daughters". Pretty badass
It's said in The Silmarillion that Huon asked all the birds and beasts to watch for and offer aid to Beren and Lúthien, which they did because Beren was a friend to all birds and beasts. The eagles' attention was drawn to Angband specifically by the madness of Carcharoth, which is why they were there to save them. It wasn't just random eagles showing up.
dont know if you guys gives a damn but if you guys are stoned like me during the covid times then you can watch all the new movies on instaflixxer. I've been streaming with my brother lately xD
this almost made me cry lmao. Tolkien was truly the greatest fantasy writer to ever live. I think film or TV show making couldn't do this story justice. I say leave it how it is and let people imagine the scene for themselves. it's the fun of reading. it's imagining everything Tolkien is trying to show you. all the beauty he made up in his head that he is sharing with you through his stories. I would have given anything to have met him. Your channel is great man it rly is. People just don't respect literature like they used to. there is a certain beauty about it. It makes possibilities endless. stories never die because if it rly touches you, you carry it with you all the time. definitely a good story and a wonderful author. keep doing what your doing man
Hope they never get it though. Christopher fell out of love with studios after the Hobbit movies. He will never allow them to touch his father's work again while he lives.
Fortunately, I don't think the Tolkien family will allow any more iterations for the time being. Though, putting the Silmarillion on the big screen would be borderline impossible anyway.
Circa2001 Just what were you expecting when it comes to making a successful movie that's based in such a rich world but has alot of boring moments in it? Nearly every huge fan of the books I know of even point out how boring alot of the moments are. This isn't a bash and they weren't bashing it either, in fact I think it's awesome that he'd apparently use full pages to describe a rock, that's excellent world building but since you're apparently an authority in transitioning books to films how would you handle that and make sure the movie is a success while also trying to stay true to books? Now I know people who care about the books would be able to enjoy it even more if those boring moments were included but they don't represent the masses who would rather see the flash without having to think much about anything else. Unfortunately, in order to be a success, they had to find a way to appeal to the masses as well but they did a damn good job considering such a huge challenge it is to transition something like LotR into a movie that would satisfy both groups. There's no way they could make a movie that can live up to the expectations of those who love the books, especially if it's to be successful
Edith left her Protestantism to marry Catholic Tolkien, still a taboo in Protestant England. Though the idea of secular constitution had been in the air as it were for some time, few had taken advantage of it and crossed that divide.
considering that the Eagles have been use less then 10 times in a period of over a hundred thousands of years no they do not works every time. and also humans Dwarfs and others hunt Eagles because thay steal food and livestock. so no the Eagles are not some kind of Lifesaver you can always count on
Your character would need be in a world with some equivalent of secularism/ecumenical-ism; Eagles only get involved where free peoples face common foes; Beren & Luthien, Battle of Five Armies, Gates of Moria.
I first read the Hobbit in sixth grade and later the Lord of the Rings in seventh grade. But man reading the Silmarillion in high school was a trip. This story in particular was one of my favorite parts of the book. Thanks for covering it Mangg.
It is the key story; the rest of the mythopoeia falls into place around it. Edith left her Protestantism to marry Catholic Tolkien, still a taboo in Protestant England. William Oliver It is a composite of Tolkien's own versions of the tale, with editorial being done by his son to help it flow better. The Silmarilian has short versions of some stories that Tolkien had been working on longer versions.
Man, I really don't think people appreciate how good your vids are. The subtly timed images and the cleverly selective information is the perfect amount to give people a decent idea of the lore, so undersubbed. Keep 'em coming bro
I don't remember where I read that Beren has been defeated by Shelob then he run wounded thru the woods and found Luthien. And all those spiders that attacked Bilbo and the dwarves were also Shelob's breed
TheExploringSeries I have to agree with you on the idea that this really could be worked into a movie. With The Hobbit trilogy over, Peter Jackson might want to revisit Middle Earth, but instead of doing and epic trilogy again, do movies that take place within the world and are driven by their own independent narrative instead of an overarching story. Sort of similar to what Rogue One did for the Star Wars universe. What's more, considering the fact that the complete story of Beren and Luthien is going to be released this year, Tolkien's favorite story and characters really have a very good chance of making it to the big screen. Plus the producers of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit would be ludicrous not to take advantage of such an opportunity. (Personally, I would LOVE to see an adaptation of The Children of Hurin, but Beren and Luthien first I certainly wouldn't mind. It would naturally lead into Turin's tale.)
6:10 it sounds like it says "... in order to try and scare KAKAROT"... which, if you've ever watched Dragonball Z, is Goku's originally Saiyan name. Obviously the wolf's name in this story is not Kakarot (Goku) but it still sounds almost the same. And the wolf in this story is bad. That's the joke.
Protocol115 MCGaming No no no, you see he changed his name when he landed on Earth as a baby, they're calling him by his Earth name and I'm calling him by his real name!
In the extended version of the two towers, Aragorn is singing the song of Baren and Luthien right before he reveals to theoden's niece that he is 86 years old

With all of the great stories, the interconnected and expansive cast of characters, and scale of the Silmarillion, it would be fantastic to see a good quality TV/Netflix Series. Even a film trilogy seems tricky to pull off...
Would like to know more about these Werewolf and Hound species my country doesn't sell the book so your channel is the only thing that provides more information besides movie. Keep up the good work
Hey, I have a question if i may. I called my first daughter Tinuviel and wanted to get her a gift of a silmaril, but want to check on which one Beren took from the crown that Luthien (Tinuviel) once wore.
I never understood why Arwen is so often compared to Luthien in the book. Arwen remains out of the action the entire time and serves only to give Aragorn hope, while Luthien was an equal and pertner to Beren, saving him and helping to complete his quest. Arwen was a macguffin; Luthien took on Sauron and won.
Given how The Hobbit was pointlessly stretched into a trilogy, should the Silmarillion story be told in Live Action, it would be better served as a series. That way it can be told in detail over a proper, less restrictive course of time.
Problem with adapting Silmarillion in live-action is that it is too big in story size for films (unless you'd make like nine of them), yet too big for telly in scope (since the war of the ring depicted in it's glory in the films is but a fraction of the grandness of the events of Silmarillion)
+Santeri Ruotsala TV is the more realistic option though. The way I see it Silmarillion shouldn't and couldn't be told in a single season. It would need at least five. As for films, even if they tried Big Screen adaptation from the outset, you would lose a lot more than Tom Bombadil this time round. For one thing, showing substantial periods of time has always been an issue with all of Peter Jackson's series and that is too big a feature of Silmarillion to gloss over and ignore.
Vary random thought, did locking Melkor up limit the extent Illuvatar could act on Arda? Not completely, of course, because it was re-made after the Numinoreans made landfall in Valinor.
Still it is his dad's creation. Christopher was just another product of his as well. Putting together the pieces and tying not s isn't exactly make you a create r is all I'm saying. I really don't get his beef with Peter Jackson though. The movies were great.
Well put. He just wants it done right and sees all the effort his father put into it. They were not purest perfect but I doubt anyone could have came any closer to Jackson's works. Return if the king won most academy awards ever for one movie 12. A true masterpiece. I can see his viewpoint though. Just hope they do the simirillian in the next 15 years. It could be epic.
Is all of the Exploring Middle-Earth series based on the silmarillion and the lord of the ring series(inc the hobbit)? or is some of it from the Unfinished Tales and other works as well? perhaps what i meant to ask is if the silmarillion contains all the prehistory of Middle-Earth prior to the the lord of the ring series. Or are there parts of it that can only be found in other works then the silmarillion?
I try to stick to just The Hobbit, Lord of the Rings, and Silmarillion, but there is also the History of Middle-Earth series put together by Tolkien's son that I borrow certain things from. I think I only took things from Unfinished Tales or History of Middle-Earth if it wasn't directly contradicted by something from the other books.
I understand. Thanks for the replay :) . If I would like to get a deeper understanding of the legendarium prior to the making of the rings of power, would your opinion be that the silmarillon alone does this or are there other works that i need to study as well? I like to add that your take on the exploring of the legendarium are sophisticated and tremendously intriguing. it really captures the essence of both fantasy and higher education that is what I find so thrilling in the oxford-man Tolkien.
Thank you. If you haven't read the Silmarillion yet and are interested in a fuller history of Middle-Earth, I think most people would point you towards reading it. After you've read that, if you're still interested in learning about the world and how Tolkien went about crafting it, the other works put together by Christopher are there as well.
Well, their son replaced King Thingol before being killed by the Sons of Feanor, and two of their grandchildren were taken by the Sons and left to starve in the woods. Their granddaughter managed to escape, but was later attacked by the Sons again. Their great-grandchildren, one of which was Elrond, were kidnapped and raised by a Son of Feanor. So yeah, the Sons did some nice work.
Well they aleast kept some of their offspring alive 😅 But why were the sons of Feanor so freaking evil/vengful? I mean its Morgoth who stole the jewel...
There's also the rangers of Dúnedain who are their mortal offspring. They're rather an interesting mix of races who live longer than average, not really ordinary Men.
This is a story I would love to see in movie form too but please for the love of God don't give it to Peter Jackson. He was done after LOTR, even quoted as saying he hates fantasy. Then they gave him the Hobbit and he slaughtered it. What a waste.
When Tolkein first met Edith, he was instantly smitten with her. One day she took him out to the woods and danced barefoot for him (where Luthien's dancing scene came from). Aragorn told this story to the hobbits on their way to Rivendell in Fellowship of the Ring.
Just read that part and was like Hey!

This is one of the best stories written by Tolkien! The main characters, Beren and Luthien built a bridge between humans and elves!
Beren is the coolest, most kick-ass guy ever existed... the two lines he said to Thingol were both manly and the best comeback lines every
I couldn't agree more that this should have a separate movie adaption. I love this part of the Silmarillion
How Big is silmarion is?
There needs to be a Silmarillion Cinematic Universe!
Cant wait for the Beren and Luthien book to come out

Can't wait for Hollywood to make a movie about Beren and Luthien.

Why are you comparing diamond to a piece of shit?
This story is a silmaril compared to that dung heap that must not be named!
I would only appove movies if they focus on one story at a time and are animated I don't think live action could do the silmarillion justice
A Silmerillion anthology? Sounds cool but Tolkiens son won't let anyone touch it for film.
I bet not, he didn't like what they did with the hobbit after all
The charcoal drawing of Beren looks like a slightly effeminate very very handsome Gerard Butler.
I know this is a overused joke, but this bares repeating: a better love-story than Twilight.

After you've read that, if you're still interested in learning about the world and how Tolkien went about crafting it, the other works put together by Christopher are there as well.
Im ordering it now.
This is another story ripe for opera.
Beren is such a boastful character who could not stand o his own . it is lutien who do all do the heroic deeds

uh oh, shit's getting real, better call some fucking eagles!
Good dog
Tolkien IS BEREN....WHILE LUTHIEN IS HIS WIFE!!!
We don't see this often A fantasy Author creates A Character for them and their LOVED ONE!!!!
What happened to the children of Luthien and Beren? They were quarter Maiar, right? They must have been something special 😅
Well they aleast kept some of their offspring alive 😅
But why were the sons of Feanor so freaking evil/vengful? I mean its Morgoth who stole the jewel...
If you haven't watched my Feanor and the Silmarils video yet, I recommend it for some further insight.
There's also the rangers of Dúnedain who are their mortal offspring. They're rather an interesting mix of races who live longer than average, not really ordinary Men.
Just as I was making a movie in my head, FUCKING EAGLES!!!
Why don't you do something on Aragon or Legolas one of the company of the rings ??
Well he already talked about Gandalf and frankly there is not much to tell about the rest of the fellowship except maybe Aragorn
This is a story I would love to see in movie form too but please for the love of God don't give it to Peter Jackson. He was done after LOTR, even quoted as saying he hates fantasy. Then they gave him the Hobbit and he slaughtered it. What a waste.
Brett George he was the second choice dirextor and he couldn’t do much about the script
