- How to get American McGee's Alice to work on WIndows 10 and modding it to where it runs on your monitor's resolution as well as look better.
IF THE SCREEN WHEN YOU LAUNCH THE GAME IS OFF-CENTER, go into the game folder, then go into the folder called 'game' and open the config file. Delete the following code: seta r_mode "-1"
Save the file and then start the game. You should have everything centered again.
I DON'T KNOW IF THIS WORKS FOR THE VERSION OF AMERICAN MCGEE'S ALICE THAT CAME WITH SOME COPIES OF ALICE MADNESS RETURNS. I DIDN'T GET THAT VERSION WITH MY COPY OF ALICE MADNESS RETURNS.

DO NOT ADJUST SETTINGS IN-GAME. OPEN THE CONFIG FILE AND CHANGE SETTINGS THERE OR THE GAME WILL REVERT TO DEFAULT SETTINGS!
Also in windows, make sure your scaling is set at 100%, otherwise the game will not be centered.

Thank the gods it worked! I thought I could never play it. But it worked perfectly other than the resolution fix. Only 1024 ×768 worked for me. So today I finished the game. actually when I was a kid I saw the game cd at a friend's house ,I was captivated but never got the chance to play it. And here I am after almost 15 years played and finished it. I tried couple of time before but couldn't get the game to working. Only the way you showed here worked. The Win10 fix works, thank goodness. I've had the crack for years, but I last played it on Windows 7. It didn't even occur to me that 10 might be an issue.

Hello Practicedummy I've followed every step on your tutorial but i can't seem to get the resolution properly. I input 1920x1080 but i get a bigger image than my monitor can show. (my windows resolution is 1920x1080)

That is odd. I don't know what can be done to correct that. You are using just one monitor right (not a 2 or 3 monitor setup)?
Hi I had very similar problem. Change resolution from 1920 x 1080 to 1280 x 720. Idk why but it helped me. What is strange because my windows resolution is 1920x1080 as well
hey, to fix that you need to at your desktop screen right click and go to display settings and change the "scale and layout" to 100%

Hello sir i have a couple of questions i hardly play games and computers so im a bit confused i bought a physics cd copy however i got one that specifically runs on mac 1) does this mean i truly cannot run it on anything minus mac 2) if i can only run it on mac, does it mean im looking for the regular cd option to run on windows. 3) i still put the cd in the cd-rom to try, but it didnt read the cd at all, i dont know if this is due to it being specifically for mac or is something wrong
I don't know. I am assuming Windows PCs as far as what my videos are geared towards.
I'm having an issue when I start the game at goes into full-screen mode but the actual display starting about halfway down the screen I have to move the cursor off the screen to click the quit button... Not Sure what I'm doing wrong or how to fix
You may have to reinstall the game and the mods.
@@Practicedummy1 I went ahead and uninstalled and deleted everything and start it over from the beginning but this time I didn't do any editing in the config file I just popped the mod in and started it up. It starts up correctly aligned now but I'm wondering if not adding the config file will make the mod not work or something like that

Great tutorial man, very easy to follow. But i have a problem, as soon as I get control of Alice in the gameplay the game immediately crashes to the desktop, with no warning of it being a crash or anything, is there a fix? Thanks for the video.
I haven't had the game crash like that. Not sure what to say concerning that. I mostly did the research on how to get it to run on modern Windows and how to mod the game. Man, that sucks.

Do you know of a fix to get the mouse locked into the game when playing the original 2000 release in a window?
Playing it in a window is the only way OBS will capture the game
Not as far as a fix goes, no. I use OBS myself and didn't have an issue with fullscreen recording.
Got interested in playing the Alice games! I got the game running with all the mods but I personally like to run my games in windowed mode. Any way I can set Alice to windowed mode?
the game disabled my mouse when i used the in-game option for fullscreen off.
Not sure on how to get it into windowed mode. I was only looking into modding the graphics for the game when I did my reseach on it.

It keeps going to a grey screen around the point where you tell me to run it. I can't proceeded past that point

No. It took research just for this method as is. SUcks that this classic isn't getting some love. Would love if GOG got their hands on the rights for this game but it's an ea property.@@BloodmoonKingdom
I can still still run it on my windows 95 and windows 7 no problem so I'm not too broken up about it. But I was really hoping to stream it too, and I unfortunately can't do that on my older operating systems. Maybe I'll figure something out if I keep playing around with it.

ever since changing to 1080 p i have crosses on my screen. its like a grid.
removing the seta r_mode "-1" fixes it but makes the 3 models more squary.
I have some trouble with the Windows 10 Fix. It says "Doesn't seem to be a American McGee's Alice folder here, are you sure you selected the right one? You need to install the game using the original installer then point me to the correct folder" What should I do?
Try reinstalling the game and make sure that it is in the C: drive and not in either Program Files folders.

Hello. i want to modify the fov because the hud bars and some stuff is outside the screen but i don't know how to do it. my screen resolution is 3840x1080. any ideas¿?

TNT village version? Never heard of that one. Not sure if that version has any changes done to where you don't see a config file but that can happen. You'll need to get ahold of the original version/image files.

@@Practicedummy1 In the actual gameplay window, I don't see them. So far, just at the title screen and whenever there is a dialogue box.
@@ThunderHorsePyro Yeah I get the same thing. Knowing idtech and how they use all texture elements, it's probably an upscaling issue.

After you ran it go ahead and look for the config file. I am looking at my video again to see if I had mentioned to run the game once before altering the config file.
Ok, I looked at my video and I did mention running the game once and the config file is showing. Not sure why you aren't getting a config file generated.
@@Practicedummy1 I ran into an issue if I didn't mount the first disc image but just unpacked it to a folder, that it wouldn't complete the install if ran on it's own (as it wont ask for disc 2 then). So I picked up the same emulator you used and followed that and it worked. So basically if the install doesn't unpack disc 2, you'll be missing files for sure.

applied the fix, applied the enhanced patched, applied the config edit.
when i launch it, the game launches and i can control Alice. but there is no dialogue box.

r_mode "-1" makes my screen go off the center, so "0" is the correct setting.
with these set ups i can't record or even stream anything.. any advice how to stream this game?
I never ran into the problem you are having (installed everything multiple times to make sure I got consistent results before making the video) , so I am unable to give any advice on how to fix your problem.
@@Practicedummy1 so far i installed it 5 times, and same configuration, and tried to record using OBS.
the game literally can't be captured it instantly disabled alt tab, you can't ALT-TAB outside the game to OBS, the only possible way is to record the screen OUTSIDE the screen, and then IF POSSIBLE reattach the sound from the game back to the finish video... it's not stream able...
how you figured it out and recorded it when upon launching the game it goes into literally the smallest possible size a window can minimize to! i can barely play it, let alone i didn't even progress and some people also say they get game crashes upon auto saving!
is this game truly playable?
@@Practicedummy1 OKAY! turns out if i got myself Alice Madness returns the complete edition, i can also get the first game American Mcgee's Alice as DLC! .. technically i have them both! .. i'm very thankful to God.. making this game work is not easy, but now with it being remastered by its very own makers. i hope it works just fine!

I don't know. Haven't used Windows 8 in years.
I installed it and had everything working great, and then i decided i wanted to change the controls, and didnt like it, so i hit reset in the control section, and it completely reset the game settings, i dont know how to get it back on wide screen, ive checked the config.cfg folder, and it still has all the original settings i entered there, but im stuck with the 4:3 settings now, can someone please help me? @Practicedummy
Uninstall everything and redo the installations of the game and mods. Older games can be fickle when it comes to tweaking for modern systems. Weird though that the only thing you did was to try to change the control settings and it ended up messing up on the display..
any way to quit the black borders?
If we are talking about the cutscenes, then no.
