I love my 1200. It's a 2012 xl1200c and yeah the 17 miles to work is a blast...but a full stage 1, seat, bars, and shocks are in the future for sure. Love your channel and podcast. Keep the rubber side down and be safe out there brother
I was planning on getting the 883 myself, but a friend of mine who is a seasoned Harley rider told me that I should consider the 1200 instead. I’m really glad I did. Even for me as a beginning rider, the extra power the 1200 has is a great advantage and at the same time it is not “too much” power. Thanks for the video! ✌️
Idk about all that iv got the 883 I got a set of 573 cams shirt shots,se heavy breather power commander tuner and kept up with big v-twins hell we had a 2018 streetglide with stage 3 and a dirt bird exhaust and I kept up with it! On the highway yes it’s vary underpowered but hill runs and town riding iv never been down right beaten on it
Dandy Rides Fuck the Sportster. Buy a Triumph. You'll save money and have a better bike. You never see Triumphs that need to be rebuilt every two years like those shaky, leaky, rattle trap Harleys.
set of mild cams and tuning and you can keep up with most on the long haul....really made a difference on my 883L .Ive been known to strap a 5 gallon jerry can on to the luggage rack when burning down ten to Vegas just in case!
Back in the late 90s, I and 3 other guys did a motorcycle trip from north texas to Montana and Canada. Two of the guys rode 883 sportsters and me and the other guy were on Suzuki Bandits. The sportsters caused us to stop every 120 - 150 miles to fill up, and it was a nice break. We rode 830 miles the first day of that trip, so it was nice to have the chance to get off and stretch our legs. The only hindrance I see with a small tank is you can get stranded somewhere by running out of gas if you're not careful, but we never had that problem on that trip.
Buddy of mine loves Harley and is busy planning out his next bike (I go mostly JDMs and Euro stuff), so thanks for the (pardon the term) crash course on Harley. Still don’t really want one (I got a Triumph Speed Triple and all is right with the world), but I like talking with other bike guys (even Harley guys) and I appreciate the humor that has made this education a lot more fun!
Good video. The only thing I disagree with you is the handle bars. The stock bars are the best for handling and I think they look cool. For comfort, an inch or two higher is my preference. But I am a smaller guy than you, 5'8" @ 190 lbs so the bike fits me just fine. I can see where you, as a bigger guy, would fit on a bigger frame more comfortably. The Iron fits me perfectly. Ride safe.
You raise some valid points I disagree with a couple of them. It may be different as you are a bigger guy, but for me the iron 883 is a ripper bike. I rode just shy of 800 miles last weekend, And averaged 85 mph with the pack the whole way there and back. Granted I do have 16 inch apes on mine, and better seat but for what the 883 is, it's a great bike. My dad has the 96 cube Dyna Super Glide and my 883 beats his to 60mph and keeps up beyond that.
85 on the 883? For that long? I got a 06 sportster 1200 c and it's got plenty of power for what it is but once I get to 80 and above it's revved up kinda high and I only hang there when passing, otherwise 75 and lower is good for me I don't feel like I'm stressing out the engine. Idk maybe I just baby it but I don't know if that's good long term espe for the smaller 883
6’1/190, use mine (XL883 2005) only in town for daily commute in Phnom Penh- it’s nimble around all the other scooters and lawless traffic, and gets plenty of thumbs up. Biggest fault for me is I only get about 70-80km (50 miles?) on a full tank. But at $5 a fill up and petrol stations all over town, it’s barely an issue. If I was going for a long ride (generally suicide given the main roads are still single lane, lawless, potholes, sporadic gravel, etc.) I’d definitely want a bigger bike with a better range & more comfort. Love the Sportster though, really decent city bike for looks & plethora of modification options. 👍🏼
When I had my '84 sporty 1000 .... the crew I rode with razzed me to no end... " hey... that's bitch bike".... or " hey ... why don't you get off that girls bike"... and .." shut that thing off... it rattles like can of ball bearings" .. They shamed me into getting a superglide... And you know I'm glad they did... I still have my early 1984 Shovel head..... 36 years... and she still starts with one pop....and runs like a chick that just saw my pecker....
Majority of people who mock Sporties are tall, fat or old. Sporties are a smaller framed young fellas ride. Designed to be ridden hard and fast. Yes, there are older fellas who love em but with their ride characteristics etc, there are more comfier bikes. I am 5'7", 160lb and a XL1200R Roadster or 48 Sporty fits me like a glove and suits the riding I do. I have ridden a Slim S and also loved it, but totally different bike. The only time I would buy a 883 is if I wanted an economical priced base for a 1275 Hammer upgrade build. Otherwise - never.
Sportsters are probably my favorite . Had a 1200 liked it a lot but for most of the things you have mentioned I went with the new street bob I think it gives me the best of both worlds
My Top 5 Changes (Iron 883) 1. Change fat seat by a bare bones 2. Change middle controls by advanced commands 3. Change Exhaust pipe 4. Change Rear suspension of 13 "by 11.5" 5. Change handlebar (it is the least necessary)
YEA! i bought a used 2006 883 from a old man 75 yrs old. I have many bikes now 2 H.D's. This bike has power but feels heavy in the ride and slow corners. Yes the range is short and the seat height is really made for a shorter guy like me 30" inseam, There is allot of frame flex in the head tube so under 80 m.p.h. is the very max handling power. I dont like being the same height as cars so its hard seeing over the cars at a stop or in between traffic. To me its a dangerous ride and really dont like it on a busy freeway.
I like Harley, I'm trying to get obe, used for first time. But I agree with you, I'm looking at cruiser class only, and everything I test rode or sit on requires a seat, bar, shock change or all 3. I want a Harley but I don't want to have to drop another $5 to 1500 just to make it "rideable". Enjoy your vids.
Very good video. I like the looks of the sportster, but I do not see why they cost much more money than the Japanese brands of cruisers and sport bikes. Im happy that Harley Davidson is an American company with American workers building these bikes. I just wish HD would bring down the prices some so more people like myself could buy one. Have fun and be safe with your bike.
slingshot Agreed, especially considering how little power it’s engine makes. The Yamaha Dragstar xvs650 has the same power and is 200cc smaller, and waaaay more reliable
I'm with ya on those, especially on power/speed. I'd do the 1275 kit if the bike were older but I'm pretty content with where I'm at now.The FP3 I've got on there pepped it up a little, I might change the front sprocket out since I do alot of highway though. Best thing about the sportster is that you can do anything with it, the bars I've got on mine were meant for a roadglide but hey they fit and I'm happy with em!
I’m 21 and next December I’ll be done with college. I wanna reward myself and buy an Iron 883, however, after watching this video I’ve realized I’m an individual that likes to go fast and I also love the cruiser look. I’m currently practicing my motorcycle riding skills on a 2013 KTM Duke 390. What are better alternatives - under $10000 - to the Iron 883? Brand does not matter to me
I have a friend who’s 6’2” and all of 300lbs. He has ridden a Harley Davidson 883 in one of its many forms for years and years. He just recently got a 1200 because his daughter bought it for him last summer. I knew nothing about motorcycles except it’s a Harley Davidson and my 300 lb buddy has ridden an 883 for at least 10-15 years with no complaints. So of course I bought myself an 883 as my first motorcycle. Honestly, if it wasn’t for the internet telling me my 883 was underpowered and too small I would never have known 🤷🏻♂️. Oh well, I have a great time on my 883. What’s crazy is that even at his weight, my iron 883 has absolutely no problems hauling my buddy around. All though I would stick to the 12oo if I were him.
I love my 883 Sportster. But I’m only 5’10” 190.It would be WAY too small if I was your size. I do find the seat height low, but otherwise, no complaints. Definitely things I would change about it, but it’s easy to mod, and can cheaply upgrade to a 1200.
The first thing I replaced was the seat. The stock seat is junk and I opted for the HD Sundowner double seat. It is great comfort for those longer rides.
1250/1275 is definitely my next upgrade, but since I ride solo most of the time, it’s not that big of a deal. The gearing of the stock 883 bikes are lackluster, but after the 1200 Primary conversion I did, that has resolved all gearing related issues. A Sportster can be made to do anything you want it to do, but there are definitely better choices for long distance as well as power... stay safe and keep it on 2. 💦🍌
Bike N' Bird My vid isn’t edited all that great, but at least it shows you from start to finish. Price wise it’s not that bad, about $120 in parts and gasket set. An extra plate clutch and stronger spring will add another $130. It was hard to invest it, but the overall pros gained were substantial, especially interstate riding.
That really depends on what type of riding you plan on doing and what type of bikes your friends are riding. Also depends on your riding preference. The 48 has forward pegs while the 883 has mid set pegs. Take a few different bikes for a test ride to get a feel for which bike feels best for you
Well I own a 2007 Harley Davidson Sportster 1200N which comes with the 3.3 gallon tank like most Sportsters do except for the 1200 Custom (4.5 gallon). And the gas light comes on my bike around 90-100 miles but I converted it into a trike with the use of a Voyager motorcycle convertible kit has I have problems in my left knee so that added weight and drag but I agree Harley Davidson Sportsters aren't designed to do long distance rides with. And personally I found a way to solve the fuel mileage issue has I plan on buying 2 1 gallon gas cans that will fit into each one of my saddlebags.
Good comments, but almost every complaint you had can be remedied, and fairly cheaply... still cheaper than the big twins out there. I've been riding for years, and I own 2 sportsers, one of which was my first Harley. Both bikes serve me well, and moreover, both have a purpose, which is point I thought you made very well in the video. I have a 2003 883 with 9ers 9in mini apes, bassani pro street exhaust, and forward controls, that is otherwise bone stock. It's a nice looking cruiser that does very well, as long as you understand its limitations. I ride with friends with high horsepower big twins all the time, and I keep up just fine most of the time. Otherwise, riding on my own, I live on highway with pretty much constant high speed traffic and no issues. The bike also has been slammed with Burly super slammer shocks, and retains the factory seat, which does suck, but I can still put 200-300 mile rides without a lot of comfort issues, and gas mileage is only a problem when it comes to the longer rides, and I've never had any issues with it with this bike. My first sportster is a project that has seen many ups and downs. I bought it as a stretched, mildly customized 1988 883cc from a guy in the town next to me. Roughly 4-6 months after buying the bike, I got hit by a horse trailer that broke free from the hitch, come straight at me, and hit the bike right at the rear swingarm, completely destroying the frame, totaling the bike. Fortunately I settled the accident with the other driver who was at fault, at the scene, and took the bike home with help from my best friend. We began tearing it down, saving the front end, the motor, and a few other parts. I ordered a pauchgo rigid frame, Chica ribbed rear fender, custom tank and exhaust, and too many other parts to list. The bike came out really nice, and I rode it like that for a couple years, including a few long rides, and a lot of club rides with the club I belonged to at the time. Unfortunately the engine gave me some problems, and ended up predetonating the front the cylinder destroying the front cylinder of the engine. Afterwards the bike sat in the shop of my friend's house for about 4-5 years, and then back at my house(where it's currently sitting) for another 3... almost 4. But over the past couple of years, I've been slowly working to put it back together. I just recently put the completed engine back into the frame, and I'm getting ready to start putting it back together, completely rewiring it, relocating all the electrical parts, cleaning up the front end, recounting the newly purchased Cole Foster gas tank, reconfiguring new forward controls and so on. The engine itself is a 1988 883cc low end with a 2000 and Buell xb12 conversion top end with matching high compression pistons. It has Andrew's v6 grind .500 lift cams, Andrew's 4140 chromoly adjustable pushrods, Jims roller rockers, and Cosmetic gaskets. It uses an Accel 35496 programmable ignition, and I'm using the Accel stealth single fire super coils. The engine is fed by a S&S super e shorty carb, and Kuryakyn velociraptor breather. The exhaust is a exotic choppers fuelies that are stepped twice to end up with a 2 1/4 final diameter. This engine should end up between 85-100 hp, and be monster considering that the bike weighs less than just about any other sportster there is. It's primary use will be just a toy to have fun on, and maybe race for fun at the dragstrip. The 4 speed will serve me well there. I may some modifications to the transmission gearing for a bit better performance at highway speeds to make it a little more rider friendly. That remains to be seen until after the bike is completed and ridden for a while. To your point in the video, it's about knowing what your bike is ideal for, and it's limitations. Thanks for the video. I like hearing good objective views on motorcycles. Keep riding and stay safe.
Agreed with everything you said, but for the Iron I would add the terrible lean angle. Aesthetics definitely put performance in the back seat. I want to say the iron has the worst lean angle of any cruiser. I looked at. Thanks for the video...good to see Iron riders sharing the pain.
As a sportster 48 owner i can definitely agree with you on most of your reasons! 2.2 gal tank on the 48 sucks on long rides! I carry a gal of fuel in MSR bottles just in case... good thing is that you can install an iron tank or sportster custom tank thats 5 gal. The size tho... if you install forward controls on yours with your height the bike will feel very confy! They are not as forward as most people think... i have ridden both my 48 and the iron back to back and the power difference is quite noticeable especially on the highway... overall i love my bike and I will probably make the 3 sisters ride with you! Probably leave earlier and meet yall there since i have to stop for fuel twice before you hahahaha!
Not really. Sometimes it’s easier to look over one shoulder vs just looking in the mirror on one side. I found out every rider does things to suit their habits/ riding style.
Hey Birdy... I get around 120-140 km on a full tank. Considering that the island is 75 km from north to South and 45 km from East to West , I am good. It's perfect. Did around 100 kms yesterday on my first solo ride. Only one fill and got round!!! Cheers Justin.
I recently test-drove a Sporty 1200. It was rude, crude, loud and FAST. I could just hear the opening salvos of Alice Cooper's "No More Mr. Nice Guy" when accelerating from a stop!! I suspect the more affordable 883 has adequate power, but the suspension (What suspension?) would need an upgrade immediately. Fun, simple bike with a fine engine.
Hey man. I have watched a few of your videos and knew you lived in Texas but didn't know you were so close. You drove right past my house in my subdivision.. I wonder if you're there Harley rider I have been seeing. I ride a Triumph Bonneville, I'm always looking for someone to ride with.
Cool man! Yeah I used to live on the northwest side but recently moved to the northeast side. Follow me on facebook and youll get notifications for group rides
Before I got my dyna I had the 48... took a little work to get it comfortable like you said I had to change the seat and bars first. My biggest thing was the range, 2.1 gallon tank was not the business... the way I rode I’d be lucky to get 100mi a tank...I do miss it tho and was a really fun first bike...I’m definitely gonna get a sportster again when I have play around money but I’d prolly get a iron and make it a hard tail bobber or tracker
I love my 2017 iron 883..I have mid apes on mine..love them..if I wanted to lean forward the whole time.i would have bought a crouch rocket.i agree that the seat could be better.but I added a k&n air cleaner and drilled 1/4holes in my Mufflers and this thing runs like it stole something
Nice report, man! Objective and honest. I like that. It is a fact that the 883 Sportster is no hot-rod. The 1200 actually is a hot-rod...however, the gas mileage goes way down. So your 50-55 mpg and 150 miles of range with the 3.3 turns into...maybe 120 absolute-no-reserve miles? For me, I judge a bike's power by the number of times I have to hit full-throttle and wind it out IN NORMAL RIDING. None of my (three, so far) 883's have come up deficient in that department. When the guys I ride with start getting all squirrelly on public roads, I just drop back. I'm no racer. And the 883 is not made for that kind of stuff anyway. To me, the Sportster's power is "sufficient." It is true that the Sportster now seems like a "small" motorcycle. And it is. The Sportster was designed for skinny white kids college who rode them on their way to the TV studio where they were hired to be extras on "Leave It To Beaver" or "The Andy Griffith Show." Full-size adults rode the FLH. My current 1996 Sportster weighs less than 500 pounds. Bikes have gotten bigger over the years! My first Kawasaki Z-1 was a monster that made the Sporty seem like a Schwinn 10-speed. The current Triumph Bonneville is *huge* compared to its 650cc ancestor of the olden days. But do a Google search for a pic of a '68 XLH. With their flat seats and "turtle" tanks they look like regular motorcycles! H-D didn't start putting the frame-hugging "Cobra" seat on until 1972. Then there was no going back - the "look" was set. The wonderful thing about motorcycles is that there is something for everyone. The Sportster suits me just fine. Yeah, they need some "personalization," but the mods are typically not expensive.
Just put a big twin tank on it. I did with my 2003 Sporty. I have a working gas gauge (wired to the key ignition). You just need to make some brackets to bolt the front tabs to the neck. Also, for long trips, especially since you're taller, put forward controls on it. That should help. I would have addressed the rear fender being cut on the sides, just to be filled in with plastic. What's up with that? That's so stupid. You never saw that on an 2003 and earlier Sporty.
@@BikeNBird, That's too bad. This is the first video that I saw about it. I guess you talked about it in anothet. Well, if you get another one, you could do it.
Love the looks, love the customisation, kinda regret not going for the 1200 as well but I never had trouble keeping up with bigger harleys... too big and bulky for mountain roads..sports bikes are something else, but I avoid them because i like to ride agressive, but I'd like to ride a bit longer, and I'd be dead or in jail if I got one tomorrow
I'm 6'5 and 380, keep in mind I have taller bars and forward controls. But I love how my sportster feels. It is my first bike and I do ride with other people on them. But my only complaint is the seat.
I've got a sportster 1200 is night and day in comparison, the power ratio to the weight is rediculous in comparison, I've got an xl1200c and I can get to 100 and still have a great on demand power. I do still want a dyna, but I dont feel like a "need" a bigger bike. The 12 is a fun bike
08 bought a 883 with 1700 miles for $4800. I was in. Yes 1200 be nice. Still pop it in 4th gear will run to 97 mph hit rev limit.. I put long air ride ( road king ???) Shocks on. New off e-bay under $50 to door. Mustang wide seat. Did 5 state 3000 mile week tour one summer . Did find. Every day there was times if they hit me on radar it been jail time. So yes 40hp could be enough get you in trouble. 😶
Honest review. Any one of the reasons is a deal breaker for buying the 883. Even the 1200 is still a small frame motorcycle and not good for long range touring.
I don't mind the seat, but I'm also 100lbs and usually get sore at around the 200 mile mark. Have to agree with you on the bars, the taller the better for longer trips. And definitely agree on the power - I'm usually trying to keep up with my group full of dynas or 1200 sportsters on my long trips. I'm definitely looking forward to doing the 1200 conversion in the next few months!
ah to be 100lbs xD Yeah I definitely thought about going bigger on the bars but by the time I had made up my mind the dyna came into the picture. Also I don't mind stripping a bike down to a frame and motor but for some reason when it comes to brakes I turn into one lazy bitch!
I’m a 275LB and 5’7-5’8 guy. I have never ridden a motor cycle but i want to get one. I want to go on a road trip from where i live to the grand canyon. Any advice for someone who wants to get a bike?
Hey man! I love what you've done with your Harley. I'm also in SATX and was thinking about getting an iron 883. I'd love to get in touch and get more opinions on it aside from what the dealer pushes on me 😂 let me know if your interested! Thanks and keep up the awesome vids!
I'm saving for a bike next year. I love the look of sportbikes, but I like cruisers like this (not the land barges like goldwings). I live out of town, highway (75mph) is the only way into town. I feel like a 250cc sportbike is too small, cause I don't want to be at like 90% capacity the whole time. So if I get a sportbike I'm looking at 600cc. Does the iron 883 do well on the highway?
Neal McBeal Yeah. I like the look of the indian scout bobber better. But the scout bobber's more expensive than the iron 883. I'm looking into the yamaha bolt at the moment
Ha nice! I do the same :) I'm a naked/sportbike fan but i want a cruiser as my new "main" bike. The yamaha bolt is a great bike and for me, better than the HD. The yamaha is cheaper, has a better lean angle, a nice look but a shitty speedometer but you can buy a new aftermarket speedometer :) My rating is: indian scout bobber - > yamaha -> ... -> Iron 883 or maybe indian/yamaha -> ... -> 883
It's kind of weird that you only left on the right mirror. If you wanted to only keep one mirror on your bike you should have kept the left one because that's your passing mirror and usually pass cars or other bikes on the left not the right.
It no longer matters. The HD motor company can not just lower prices. We now have access to Harley corporate balance sheets. This motor company in the red by almost 500 million. They are forced to sell bikes with substandard parts, just to generate the "shop-income" in some veil attempt to service some of these loans. This company in such a death spiral, is now only a matter of time before the banks start calling them in on some of these loans.........
Mine has a loud ticking sound at 14,000 miles and ive lost the exhaust bolts three times, one broken exhaust stud, one internal oil leak, a plastic cover came loose and melted on the pipes, the license plate outer mount fell off on the way home, and the front blinkers vibrated loose so they just spin around until you tighten them again. Quality of a mcdonalds toy.
Hi Bike N Bird have you thought about doing a 1250cc up grade to the bike hencs getting ride of 1 of you hates anyway just a suggestion have a good one ride safe but ride hard
I definitely have considered it but to me the money just isn't worth it for my current situation. If I didn't have the dyna, then hell yes. But over $1000 to make my second bike as fast as my first bike just doesn't make sense. I'm going a different route on the sportster though (video coming wednesday ;))
With you being 6'2", do you have forward or mid controls on your Iron? I am over 6 foot as well and I was curious on if forward controls would be any more comfortable? Thanks!
+Connor Rogers I love and swear by my mid controls but there's also people that love and sweet by their forwards. I would advise visiting a dealer and trying it for yourself because I see opinions sway all the time
I am 5' 10" and just changed to forward controls. I am much more comfortable with them. You will have to change from the stock footpegs as they won't fit on the left clevis.
This video in less than 8 minutes: What I hate about the Sportster 883 is that it doesn't do what its NOT designed to do (*even though it does EXACTLY what its designed to do). You bought a bike based on budget rather than its suitability. This video reflects more on your choice than the qualities of a Sporster 883. ;)
Just because it wasn't designed to do a certain thing doesnt mean I didnt hate it. But considering this video is quite old, I'd say I made some good choices afterwards...
+DuckHead Moto yeah ground clearencd was sort of an issue but it didnt make the cut. The Road Glide shocks I put on it helped with that quite a bit as well
fair assessment. comfort my chief beef. made for women and short guys. footpegs should have been moved more forward. definitely get better hand grips...
Tbh the before looks better
As a 5'5" rider, with a 30" inseam, the Sportster XL883 is a perfect fit for me.
I agree 100%. I still feel I would take a dyna over a 1200 at this point, but between the 1200 and the 883 the winner is clearly the 1200.
Idk about all that iv got the 883 I got a set of 573 cams shirt shots,se heavy breather power commander tuner and kept up with big v-twins hell we had a 2018 streetglide with stage 3 and a dirt bird exhaust and I kept up with it! On the highway yes it’s vary underpowered but hill runs and town riding iv never been down right beaten on it
how much was the upgrade cost.. if you dont mind
Dandy Rides Fuck the Sportster. Buy a Triumph. You'll save money and have a better bike. You never see Triumphs that need to be rebuilt every two years like those shaky, leaky, rattle trap Harleys.
I had a Triumph and loved it but unfortunately it got totaled (not my fault). I got the HD 883 now though.
set of mild cams and tuning and you can keep up with most on the long haul....really made a difference on my 883L .Ive been known to strap a 5 gallon jerry can on to the luggage rack when burning down ten to Vegas just in case!
Ride safe.
Coming into my fifth season on my 883 Iron. I agree with all of this. Love it for around town, but an 8 or 9 hour ride will kill my back.
That voice crack at 0:50 though
Your time stamp was so perfect. I thought I had missed it but then it happened and I cracked up hard
I love your comment!!
My Top 5 Changes (Iron 883)
1. Change fat seat by a bare bones
2. Change middle controls by advanced commands
3. Change Exhaust pipe
4. Change Rear suspension of 13 "by 11.5"
If I was 6’2” and 260 I wouldn’t even look at a Sporty.
I'm 6'3 205 do u think i would have an issue? I'm almost 19 and really want to look into getting a motorcycle
well i am 5'3 i wonder if it fits me Lol
@@Jake-jf9ij If i were you i'd go for something like the fat boy, it's an amazing bike
@@NLyousefgames You'd be better off trying an XL883L "Superlow", it is specially designed for shorter riders.
Dean Frank that’s what I was thinking as soon as he said that 😂
I like Harley, I'm trying to get obe, used for first time.
I definitely need a tune on this bike! That's one of the things on my list to do.
Brand does not matter to me
The Dyna/softail family is a good bet, or the honda magna.
I’ve got a 1200 custom I’m 6’2” 300 pounds a different seat helps a lot but I also have a Dyna that I ride on long trips love them both
I’ve never seen so many pickup trucks per block.
I love my 883 Sportster. But I’m only 5’10” 190.It would be WAY too small if I was your size. I do find the seat height low, but otherwise, no complaints. Definitely things I would change about it, but it’s easy to mod, and can cheaply upgrade to a 1200.
Also glad my 2014 Sportster 1200 has a 4 and 1/2 gallon gas tank
Thanks a lot man. Currently I am looking at one 883 2010 to have it as my daily commuter.
+Wet _Banana I've heard great things about the primary conversion. Might look into that myself. Plus my bikes still desperately needs a tune
I'm planning to buy my first harley.
Does anyone here to give me a good advice.
Which harley should i buy?
Iron 883, Fourty eight, Roadster, softtail
That really depends on what type of riding you plan on doing and what type of bikes your friends are riding. Also depends on your riding preference. The 48 has forward pegs while the 883 has mid set pegs. Take a few different bikes for a test ride to get a feel for which bike feels best for you
If you fall in love with the 48, get the bigger tank, you don't have to stick with the Peanut tank
It has Andrew's v6 grind
.500 lift cams, Andrew's 4140 chromoly adjustable pushrods, Jims roller rockers, and Cosmetic gaskets.
About the range: I hear some 883's have like a 4.5 gal tank. Could you not swap it out?
Agreed with everything you said, but for the Iron I would add the terrible lean angle. Aesthetics definitely put performance in the back seat. I want to say the iron has the worst lean angle of any cruiser. I looked at. Thanks for the video...good to see Iron riders sharing the pain.
Are there any conversions available? I like my corners, it's a lot of the reason I ride a bike.
+Robert Ortiz yeah I've seen a 48 with an 883 tank on it. Looks really good actually! Hope to see you out there!
I still never understand why people flip mirrors especially when they remove one of them it seems less effective but that's just my take on it
Neil Brown I’m not a fan either but think it’s for looks misty and some states by law you have to have at least 1 mirror.
Not really. Sometimes it’s easier to look over one shoulder vs just looking in the mirror on one side. I found out every rider does things to suit their habits/ riding style.
Because flipping your mirrors prevent you from blocking the view with your arms if you have them up. With them down you see better.
Hey Birdy... I get around 120-140 km on a full tank. Considering that the island is 75 km from north to South and 45 km from East to West , I am good. It's perfect. Did around 100 kms yesterday on my first solo ride. Only one fill and got round!!! Cheers Justin.
Lol yeah man for island living a sporty would be GREAT
I recently test-drove a Sporty 1200.
3:38 what a gorgeous Camaro
Jordan Levy lucky bastard haha
Shout out to SA! See yall on the road.
I think the standard tuck and roll seat on my 2019 is really comfy, have you ridden a newer one with this seat?
Have you ever thought about doing the 1200 screaming eagle upgrade
I love my 2017 iron 883..I have mid apes on mine..love them..if I wanted to lean forward the whole time.i would have bought a crouch rocket.i agree that the seat could be better.but I added a k&n air cleaner and drilled 1/4holes in my Mufflers and this thing runs like it stole something
The position of the feet does not change the inclination of the back, it inclines you on the motorcycle handlebar.
I do not understand what you say.
New rider here. Why no left mirror? Thanks
To me, the Sportster's power is "sufficient."
It is true that the Sportster now seems like a "small" motorcycle.
You never saw that on an 2003 and earlier Sporty.
would be pretty difficult to do that now considering I sold it over a year ago
@@BikeNBird,
That's too bad.
I like those bars. I think drag bars would be hell on my back leaning too far forward.
If it feels small to you it's definitely going to feel small for me, I'm 6'4" and around 340ish. Maybe I'll need a proctologist to get off of it.
Nice video. I have the same bike. Did you ever consider the 1200 conversion for it?
08 bought a 883 with 1700 miles for $4800. I was in. Yes 1200 be nice. Still pop it in 4th gear will run to 97 mph hit rev limit.. I put long air ride ( road king ???) Shocks on. New off e-bay under $50 to door. Mustang wide seat. Did 5 state 3000 mile week tour one summer . Did find. Every day there was times if they hit me on radar it been jail time. So yes 40hp could be enough get you in trouble. 😶
I hate the rear brake squeak of the sportsters haha
UGGHHHH TRUTH!
I didn’t realize this was a thing outside of my sportster! 😂😂😂
I thought mine was just a fluke.
I just bought a 2014 72, thought I was going crazy...so is that normal?
Clean your damn breaks lazy ass
Honest review. Any one of the reasons is a deal breaker for buying the 883. Even the 1200 is still a small frame motorcycle and not good for long range touring.
I never drove a motorcycle before but I always dreamed having a iron 883. Do you think it's a good bike for beginners
Its great for beginners
Are you riding in Texas? It’s been years since I’ve been there but shit those roads are quiet!
Yessir
Im thinking about getting one this helped a lot.
I’d absolutely love to know which cowl u got on her plz oml
Lmk*
Hey man! I love what you've done with your Harley. I'm also in SATX and was thinking about getting an iron 883. I'd love to get in touch and get more opinions on it aside from what the dealer pushes on me 😂 let me know if your interested! Thanks and keep up the awesome vids!
For sure man! Just shoot me an email or pm on facebook or IG
nice tips n yes totally agree with handle bar n tank is AMUST, as im pickin my up today 95 883 sportster so pump up :)
I weigh 115lbs & the stock seat was the first thing I noticed, very uncomfortable. Imma get one but that's the first thing I'm changing
I got a saddleman seat 2 up. it's great. about $350.
Does the iron 883 do well on the highway?
thecoolchipys Take a look at the Indian Scout Bobber. This bike is cheaper, looks better (imo) and it's perfect for long distances.
Great video thanks for the info.
You can buy the upgrade kit for 442$, Make it 1200. I have a 91 sporty xhl deluxe, bored it to 1200.
It's kind of weird that you only left on the right mirror. If you wanted to only keep one mirror on your bike you should have kept the left one because that's your passing mirror and usually pass cars or other bikes on the left not the right.
It wasn't by choice. The other one broke off.
For a first bike, what do u suggest? Something cheap but good for beginners
Ιωάννης Μπισλιαγάκης if you’re looking for something cheap and easy for beginners you gotta go with the Honda Rebel.
It no longer matters. The HD motor company can not just lower prices. We now have access to Harley corporate balance sheets. This motor company in the red by almost 500 million. They are forced to sell bikes with substandard parts, just to generate the "shop-income" in some veil attempt to service some of these loans. This company in such a death spiral, is now only a matter of time before the banks start calling them in on some of these loans.........
whats that bag called that you have on your harley on the right side?
Any insight on the Street Bob
I have a 2012 iron 883 xl1200n. Its perfect.
Quality of a mcdonalds toy.
guess you gotta tighten everything down
What kind of Handel bars ?
I want to put wider tiresnon mine to maybe handle a bit better
1:46 Bike N Bird Passing Birds on his Bike.
birdception
What i don't like it's the very tiny lines especialy in the front prefer the 48
Hi Bike N Bird have you thought about doing a 1250cc up grade to the bike hencs getting ride of 1 of you hates anyway just a suggestion have a good one ride safe but ride hard
I definitely have considered it but to me the money just isn't worth it for my current situation. If I didn't have the dyna, then hell yes. But over $1000 to make my second bike as fast as my first bike just doesn't make sense. I'm going a different route on the sportster though (video coming wednesday ;))
GO HAMMER 1275 www.hammerperf.com/883conversions.shtml
Im about to buy a 2018 883tm, for 8k is it worth it. Going tomorrow 11/24
Would u say the XL 883 is a good 1st bike for a woman that's only 123lbs?
With you being 6'2", do you have forward or mid controls on your Iron? I am over 6 foot as well and I was curious on if forward controls would be any more comfortable? Thanks!
+Connor Rogers I love and swear by my mid controls but there's also people that love and sweet by their forwards. I would advise visiting a dealer and trying it for yourself because I see opinions sway all the time
I am 5' 10" and just changed to forward controls. I am much more comfortable with them. You will have to change from the stock footpegs as they won't fit on the left clevis.
JUST PUT ON HIGHWAY BARS SO YOU CAN STRETCH YOUR LEGS
what handlebars are you using?
This video in less than 8 minutes: What I hate about the Sportster 883 is that it doesn't do what its NOT designed to do (*even though it does EXACTLY what its designed to do).
You bought a bike based on budget rather than its suitability. This video reflects more on your choice than the qualities of a Sporster 883. ;)
Just because it wasn't designed to do a certain thing doesnt mean I didnt hate it. But considering this video is quite old, I'd say I made some good choices afterwards...
Ground clearance is #1 for me. I am missing the lower half of my Iron lol
+DuckHead Moto yeah ground clearencd was sort of an issue but it didnt make the cut. The Road Glide shocks I put on it helped with that quite a bit as well
Apes are a must why the 72 with the mini apes and the 21 in spoked front wheels look sooooo much better, 48 guys ride a 72. Looks and feels better.
no offence, did you buy this bike blind folded?
Your profile picture looks like a penis.
I think the item I wouldn’t like and the same with the Slim is the 3 gal tank
Did you say byan Ames? Like from revive skateboards
Man, that 883 sounds nice. Sounds true Harley
The only reason to buy an 883 is to throw a 1200 top end on it and it’ll make it a screamer. Other than that don’t waste your time or money
How much dose it usually cost
Is 883 too short for me? I have 1.90 thx
Looked better before you ruined it
Corbin low pro seat 👍
If you can go over a hundred miles without seeing a gas station your not in America
try Utah. they post signs warning you...
6:09 Aye! That’s Hausman 👍🏽
Your Definitely right about the stock bike comfort ! 😂😂👍👊
fair assessment. comfort my chief beef. made for women and short guys. footpegs should have been moved more forward. definitely get better hand grips...
