    Excellent video. Clean audio. Crisp picture quality. You speak clearly and to the point. Now, I have two comments. 1). You are a very smart man to choose a well cared for Evo engine Harley. Cheap and reliable. Good on gas. 2). Keep away from performance mods. Sure, they will provide short term thrills. But all the gas you've saved by buying an 883 will be wasted on a gas guzzling expensively modded 1250cc immitation " 48 ". Imo I'd leave it alone. Now, watch some solid motorvloggers like Shawn Smoak and Motonewbrider. They both have sportsters. They may be able to help you if you choose to mod it. Tcrs !

    • @BlockheadMoto
      @BlockheadMoto  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Richard, thanks for the feedback and kind words + comments, I appreciate it! I've actually already thrown a few mods on the bike, but nothing too major (AC / 2-to-2 exhaust, fuel controller.) Debating on the 1200 / 1250, but probably going to leave that alone for a long time! I watch Shawn Smoak all the time, actually quite a bit before I picked up my Iron, great guy and channel! I'll have to check out Motonewbrider. Thanks again!

      who buys a bike for gas milage? get a scooter. the difference is negligible

    • @BlockheadMoto
      @BlockheadMoto  8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      +3800slomaro Someone who's car doesn't get good gas mileage, but they don't want a scooter? :) While it may not be important and is 'negligible' to you, it might be important and something worth considering to others. It was a consideration for me, and while it might not be that big of a difference on paper from gallon to gallon, over the life of the bike, I'd think the difference would probably look significant.

    • @3800slomaro
      @3800slomaro 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      my "gas guzzling" 1200 gets 40-45mpg depending on how hard i ride. and thats with a good tune not running lean at all like they come epa mandated from the factory. it runs stong and cool and is much healthier for the bike than the 14.6 afr they come from the moco with.

    I also started on an 883. I had never ridden any type of motorcycle before this bike. I literally passed my MSF course on a Sunday and bought my bike the next Tuesday. IMO its a great bike to start on, a lot of torque, low seat hight, light, and great-looking. Its also pretty fast, my best was 105 (if you wanna go faster than that get a sport bike). Raced a new 6.2 V8 Silverado and we were going toe to toe.

      How did you enjoy the street 750? Harley claims it's the perfect city bike. I test rode one and didn't find it to be spectacular in any way.
      Why choose that bike over, say a Honda shadow 750? (I own a shadow, it's gutless but it's the absolute epitome of a cruiser IMHO)

    New rider here also I went to the Dealer and love the look of the iron, but thought it was a small bike. Seen the 48 and fell in love, researched used ones and thought this would be my first bike, went to the dealer seen a used 16 Slim S and threw common sense out the window. Bought it now growing into it and since it has the lowest seat height available and the throttle by wire, cruise and many new features it's not as hard to ride as I thought it was going to be still a little cautious cause it came with the 110 screaming eagle and it's 300 a month.

    • @BlockheadMoto
      @BlockheadMoto  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Nice, I'm debating on boring it out! I'm getting pretty low gas mileage even without boring it out, think I need to run the autotune w/ the FP3. Every time I hear about someone getting rid of the Iron, they always say they miss it, haha

    Nice Vid , I ride a 2012 Iron 883, its my fourth Sportster.
    Sportsters are cool bikes, sure they are not lightweight or particularly powerful but they get the job done.
    The reason I bought mine is simple I liked it very much and still, and my bike is still mostly stock, save a K&N air filter stock replacement type, saves you money on having to buy new filters over the long run.
    in hindsight I wish I had bought a used one, I probably paid way too much for mine LOL but all the miles are mine.
    Insurance even here in expensive California is not bad for me, but then I'm a getting older 50ish dude.
    Nice to see another fan of the Sportsters.
    (Although the new XG 750 Street Rod is making me have thoughts of a second bike)

I definitely prefer the center-mounted pegs... just feel more in control and able to maneuver. For me it was a matter of the Harley's fit and finish. (I bought a Sportster "72") I was looking at the Indian Scout 60 and the Street twin. I already own two BMW road bikes so I opted for the union built Harley. I hear the Triumphs are partially or mostly made in India, and assembled in the U.K. Bought my Sportster with 400 miles on the clock and so far I love it.

    I went for a 2016 roadster, and love it. However, a mate of mine now has had 2 883's and loves them ! About your insurance blockhead, here in UK insurance would definitely be invalid you didn't inform them of engine mods. I know it's unlikely, but in the event of a fatal accident the engine could be stripped down as the 1200 mod is well known. I know insurance companies love to get out of paying compensation. For piece of mind, I would pay the extra dollars. Great video, now subscribed :)

    I inherited my Father in Laws 2000 XLH 883 several years ago and have considered upgrading to a newer bike several times. Takes me back. I’m 70. Had a 65 CH. bored and stroked out to 74 inches. I loved it. Then put couple hundred thousand miles on two BMW’s. Still have one. A 1980. But jonesing for another stroker 883. They’re intoxicating. And two 4 9/16 inch strokes ain’t light on torque. And Sifton minus minus cams work great and accentuate that Harley lumpy idle that slays me to this day.

    I am British. Did some work recently in the USA - but I couldn't spot a bad neighborhood - your comment about not stopping in a particular neighbourhood puzzles me - how can you see where is safe and where isn't. In the UK it's obvious to us by the vibe - but when the sun is shining in the USA it really isn't. Apparently I took a walk in the absolute worst part of a town in Ohio and didn't even notice.

      There's a few tells about where rougher neighborhoods in the US are.
      1) Check cashing place (like Amscot,) next to a liquor store.
      2) Lots of bus stops.
      3) Bars over windows of local businesses and houses.
      4) Chain link fence / fencing surrounding communities / businesses / houses.
      5) Heavy police presence in the area (either on patrol in vehicle or on foot.)
      There's a clear different here in Orlando anyways. I'll have to do a video in the future of the differences maybe, haha

      @BlockheadMoto  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I could do that, but it might not be the most accurate review! I ended up taking my bike in after the exhaust + tune and they found out my throttle was only going up to 70%. After they adjusted that, it was a world of difference, so I wasn't just feeling the effects of the stage 1, haha

    Love the video, I ride a 2013 883 picked it up with 5000miles on it this summer. Funny enough, I always stand up over bumps with forward controls and ape hangers.

    • @BlockheadMoto
      @BlockheadMoto  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's awesome, barely any mileage on that at all for a 2013! Mine had like 3,000 when I picked it up, practically new :) With apes and forward controls, you're able to get that angle to pull yourself up over bumps! That's a good solution. I imagine with stock handlebars like I have on mine + forward controls, it wouldn't be as easy, haha. I'm always thinking of going lower w/ the handlebars vs higher. Not quite drags, but maybe some clip ons.

    The 883 is a bike you can keep for life. The sheer number of after market options for it is astonishing, and the engine is a lovely, understressed lump - you can get a lot out of it. It's reasonably easy to take it up to a 1200 if you feel like it, or even throw in a 1250 performance kit if you want to haul some ass.

    Love Blockhead and his crew. I researched a ton and Blockhead(along with Great Egret and Matt Laidlaw) make such great content for HD and the Iron 883 it was instrumental in my purchase of a new 2020 883 late last year. The only real advantage for new purchase is having a 2 year warranty that I had to use a couple times (electrical issue) that were fully covered by HD warranty.
    However, the rest of his points are all perfect. Great for new rider. Not crazy expensive. Modable. Fun to ride. The mid controls makes it easy to control for a new rider(flat foot easily) and insurance is around 35.00/month.
    Subscribe to Blockhead. You won’t disappointed. He seems like a real solid dude. RIDE SAFELY!!

    These are the best new Harleys in my estimation. They aren't my kind of bike but you buy a Harley because it is a Harley, many bikes will out perform it but that in't really the point, like buying the new Bonnevilles that are well over priced but still well sought after. These just look so cool

    • @BlockheadMoto

      Well said Ray! When purchasing it, I was buying it not to 'haul ass,' but to cruise and go with the flow. It's nice to have that extra pep, but if I wanted to zip around town as fast as I could, I would have gone the sport bike route. I have love for sport bikes, probably would own one in the future even, but for now, loving the Iron. And loving the look of the Iron as well :)

    Love the channel. Just a point to bear in mind with insurance. Yes, if you upgrade the engine the insurance company will still see the bike as an 883, but if you ever need to claim, they will do whatever they can to not pay out. If they find the bike is a 1200 the insurance will be invalid!

    The 1200 conversion is a nice idea, but here in BC, Canada you need to declare the actual displacement of the bike when you insure it (ICBC has our balls in a vice) if you get into an accident, or even get pulled over at a road check and they find out you are only paying for 883cc when you have 1200cc your insurance is voided. You'll lose your bike and maybe your license.
    Personally, I think 883cc is plenty really. I ride a DR650 currently and I have no problem with highway speeds. an extra 233cc and one more piston should have no trouble really.
    All 1200cc does it drink more fuel and at $1.30+ per liter I'd keep the fuel sipping 883

    Good Video BLOCKHEAD, I was on the same rail when decided to buy my first Bike this year (2018), your reasons are good, but on my case, I didnt want to listen other people for start with something lighter, smaller or "starter" bike. The dealership recommended me to take the HD academy, so I did, later I was conviced to buy a FatBob114. If is the same case for you, I recommend you not to buy much stuff for your bike, so later you can sell it easy and get a softail model. (if you are rich avoid my comments, LOL)

    Suh dude, here is my week 1 impressions of the Iron. First the bad. Shocks are horrible and need upgrades! Driving at 55mph plus is rough and you get beat down with wind and lastly the mirrors "inverted" are almost useless and I end up just whipping my head around. The good... sounds great with the short stacks, looks amazing and everyone likes it when they look at it. Cheap insurance. Just enough power to have fun and not kill your self if your a newer rider . Somewhat comfortable too unless I'm going fast and then my back hurts from leaning forward to duck the wind .
    My 2 cents! Thanks for all the uploads Blockhead. Gonna get me the stage 1 Arlen's Ness Heavy Breather , a windshield of some sorts for long country cruises , and some new shocks .. gonna stop there and drive it for a year or 2 and then jump to the Roadster ... Lat Duh

    Appreciate the note regarding insurance; in Canada, it's required, and a friend of mine, who kept his sport bike out on his front porch, woke up one day to find it - just gone. This was bad enough, but the damned insurance company threw out so many specious arguments to keep from paying up that he was ready to start bringing in a provincial ombudsman to start arbitration. They did FINALLY live up to contractual agreements, but he now takes serious security moves to ensure this never happens again.

    The good thing is that when you are bored of that 883 engine you can bore it out to a 1250. With the 883 gearing it is faster than the 1200's. Also you can go as far as you like and even go to 120+hp on these sportsters reliably.

    • @BlockheadMoto
      @BlockheadMoto  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +MotoZixxer Exactly! Definitely one of the reasons I chose the 883. Plus insurance stays cheap like I said in the vid, as they still see it as an 883 since that's what's linked to the VIN vs it actually being a 1200/1250 post-upgrade.
      I have heard that about the gearing and it being faster than the 1200's, I'll have to see if I can find a vid on that!

    • @MikeKollin

    Enjoyed your little vid Mr. Blockhead. I've been riding Harleys since the early seventies. Had a sporty in the early eighties, then moved up to 'glides. My current ride is a full dress ultra. But after forty something years of farm work and a few injuries, I'm actually having to admit that I need to downsize. So I've been talking to my favourite Harley dealer this week about buying a 2016 883. I like the look a lot- my missus won't like the seat though:) By the way, down here in Australia they cost fifteen and a half. And I'm guessing I'm the only one who's posted here who has killed kangaroos with Harleys:) JayInOz

    • @BlockheadMoto
      @BlockheadMoto  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah the Iron isn't really 2-up friendly, definitely not as much as the 'glides or ultras! That's wild about them costing that much in Australia! Come to the US and buy one for half the cost, have it shipped back. Would prob be cheaper AND you'd get a trip to the US out of it, haha. Definitely a first on killing a kangaroo with a Harley, that's wild! Cheers for the post Jay :)

    I use my engine to slow myself down all the time. Looks like you only use your breaks and keep the clutch in the whole time you're slowing down. Is there a right way to slow down? Should I be keeping the clutch in and only using the breaks? Or is it ok for me to be going down through the gears to slow myself down? Good video.

    • @BlockheadMoto
      @BlockheadMoto  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Don Wasinger I've heard of people doing both. I actually wanted to ask a Harley mechanic which was better in terms of wear and tear on the engine/transmission with engine braking vs just using the brakes. I do both tbh, depending on the situation. If I have time and distance, engine brake. If not and sudden, clutch in and brakes only.

    Good review. I'm looking at getting an 883. I had an '89 FLHTC as a first bike, but I want something newer. It's a bit of a downgrade in comfort and power, but man I love the look of the 883, and as you said the price is a big part of it. I'm curious, are you using stock pipes? And do you ever have a passenger?
