What you Yammie describe about the riding position is exactly the same difference as riding horses english style and spanish style. With the english saddle (lighter and smaller), you ride on your front feet and hold tight the horse between your knees; with the spanish saddle (heavier and larger) you ride on your butt, and the stirrups advanced. Harleys are spanish style riding motorcycles (the style of cowboys), the rest are english style riding (the style of fox hunters and small jockeys).

I just got out of the “Harley” life, trading in my 17 Road King for a 2020 Ninja 1000. I’m loving the switch. I would love to see you ride an 800 lb Harley touring model. The touring models are definitely HD bread and butter. I think you will still hate it, but it would be fun to watch you hate a proper HD.

I wish I could ride a sport bike. I don't want to, really, I just wish my legs would fold under me like they used to. LOL
I started on a sport bike but didn’t really enjoy it. The throttle and clutch were both almost binary and unforgiving. I guess I was born to cruise. I’m just not in that much of a hurry. Got a Sportster and a softail so I’m kinda a dedicated or committed. Lol

Yam. I’ve followed you a long time. I like you a lot. I remember when you just did simple moto vlogging and I’ve watched your channel grow. I got love for you and the channel. So this isn’t hate.
I’m older than you are by a couple years. I’ve been riding longer. I’ve definitely been riding cruisers longer. And... to start off by saying you have to ride the sportster differently meaning not hugging the tank and on the mid foot rather than ball.... that’s simple plain jane regular cruiser riding my dude. It’s relaxed riding. I think your experience on cruisers is just that limited tbh. I get that it’s not your cup of tea though.
With that said. I think Harley’s are usually junk. Idk why they don’t come from the factory with dual front disks. My carbureted ‘02 Yamaha roadstar smoked the dog shite out of my neighbors ‘18 heritage softail. It accelerated better, braked better, and is easier to maintain. And it’s 16 years older and was a third the price new.
Try doing a few long distance road trips (1,000 miles plus) on a nice metric cruiser or an older goldwing. Might help with the perspective and perception.

My Dyna has great support from local dealer plus several independents. My Road Star, however, was declined by dealer as too old, aside from tire service, cuz half the techs were still in diapers when it was new. I've owned several brands over the years and always heard the same crap: "Them's junk". Ride yer own bike.
Just bought my first motorcycle and its an 883 iron. Love it. Its sexy, its rumbly. Its fucking chill. I get the love for yamahas (I ride a kodiak 700 4wheeler also) but man that v twin is nice. The 686cc yamaha engine feels snappier and faster but you don't feel the same when you rip the throttle. That harley is something else

No back brake is challenging too.
I do not have much experience with older Harleys but I had a 2014 Fatbob and that motorcycle had very good brakes I was able to stop very quickly. Do people only use very old motorcycles as their reference points? Most riders have no idea how to brakes , I literally had people tell me to never use the front brake, some tell me don't use the rear, and had one tell me I should only stop in neutral. All of those people were morons, to properly break, you downshift, let the clutch out a bit, as you apply the breaks and continue to down shift as you slow down letting the clutch out. on emergency braking, apply your front and rear, not allowing them to lock up, as you downshift to first and let the clutch out slowly. Luckily I have a 2020 street glide and it has amazing brakes on it and they are linked, but I still break using all 3 braking options. Because it is 800+ pounds.
@@Evirthewarrior There is relay no comparison to most other motor cycles, the best stoppers on a Harley are probably not even equal to the worst on any sports bike.
I'v been riding for 40 years and have ridden many, many different motorcycles. All sizes and types including Harley. I am well aware of how to use the brakes. I currently ride a zx14.
The best I can say about Harley brakes is they are just about adequate.If you then consider the price of the bikes, well that is not even close to being good enough.
I can forgive Harley for not being the best handling or lightest or smoothest or fastest or even the most reliable. Poor brakes though well there has been no excuse since the late 1980s early 1990s
I'm 6 ft 2 and rode my buddies 883 with forward controls and I loved it! Made it a totally different ride
Yammie watching your videos got me hyped to try motorcycles, and I bought my first bike this last month. I had thought about it in the past but seeing into the world of bikes through your videos was part of that last push to make that first step taking the MSF course. Not a sport bike boi at the moment as I got a moto Guzzi V7. It’s more laid back and my style but in the future I’ll definitely be looking into other types of bikes. You and the team are the doing a great job spreading the word about bikes, keep it up!

I love my 883. It's nimble, it's fast enough for me, I can take trips, I don't rule out long trips, it's fantastic to ride around the city, commuting even, people tell me it looks great. I really relax and enjoy riding on my Iron. It's a 2019, Gunship Gray Iron, got Vance & Hines Short Shots.
I'm not particularly a Harley fan but I'd love to see you ride some of the other Harley models especially the big ones

Yammie, your channel is an inspiration, I love riding too, love everything about motorcycles, anything about two wheels. Here in South Africa people don't ride bikes as much as other countries, well of course we do, but not in comparison to some other countries, like in Asia and Europe where bikes are seen everywhere. People need to be more independent on bikes, be able to ride where they need and don't need to be obligated to buy a car, take a taxi/wharrever with four wheels and a big enjin. I wish more people could try riding and see, as long as you are always sober, aware and as safe as possible, motorcycling on the streets is so much more of an enjoyable and liberating experience than riding a car. I appreciate your channel and will promote it because there is really a bike for anybody. Your channel is awesome.

Today I traded my sportster for a ducati scrambler 1100, I haven't even ridden it more than a few yards and I already like it way more.
Love my Harley... reminds me of the days I rode my beetle from Kimberley to Cape Town 4 times a year while I was studying. I felt connected to my machine.

Its my current and second bike. I agree when you say the motor is lazy. But for some people as a beginner may not want a 1200 as their first bike. I chose the 883 because it wasn't overwhelmingly powerful since i wasn't as familiar with motorcycling then. After 2 years i could say im ready to move up to at least a 103ci because i was able to focus on the fundamentals of riding

But now two new knees and two years of therapy in the wind again . Bought a 93 vlx Honda shadow nice light bike got my mojo back . Now my evo softtail Springer is almost finished ready for spring. Hope to ride across Canada this summer . Covid restrictions will be the only impediment.
My tastes in bikes have evolved as well. I used to be staunch BMW Airhead guy, went to all the rallies, etc. Quit riding when my family was young and when I got back in BMW no longer made anything I really wanted and knee issues pushed me towards cruisers. Now I ride a Dyna Wide Glide and enjoy it a lot. Swore back in the day I would never ride HD. Very comfortable, visceral, and great support.

Fixing the vibes is easy enough, swap out the lump for an R1 crossplane engine. Then fix the handling by replacing the frame, suspension, wheels, seat, and everything apart from the keyfob with the equivalent parts from the donor R1.
I have a Scrambler, and going back after spending some time on a bike with ride-by-wire, it's like a punch in the face! So brutally direct. I love it! But then it's all about what you want to do. The Scrambler is great for local rides, long distances are a bit painful. So I would say to people thinking about their first bike to think about what they want to do, more than what it looks like.

I was recently out with a couple of friends. One friend let me take his Duke 390 for a quick ride, and I let him take my Vulcan 500 for a ride. I am on the shorter side (5 foot 7) and I had to basically tiptoe the Duke 390. I thought low speed maneuvers would be precarious on the Duke, but I was actually more confident on the Duke than I was on my own bike. It was an awesome experience and my next bike going to be a sportier naked instead a slightly bigger cruiser.
I’m glad I got a 2020 Yamaha R3. Comfortable, efficient, agile, good looking, and it’ll keep up with my buddies cruisers with a substantially smaller engine.
Yup when I hear some describing the 883 as a great beginner bike. I kinda cringe. Plenty of better beginner options that also save you coin.

Hello Yammie Noob coming up to 10 yrs owning a 91 XLH1200 and having as good a time
riding it now as I did when I bought it.
Ok, honest advice here coming from the Harley camp. First of all you started with an 883 instead of a 1200. Perhaps a budget build? Assuming the motor, exhaust and air cleaner are stock. Because they are air cooled they are slow lean pigs for emissions reasons stock. 1) Power: My suggestions would be slip on mufflers, cam swap to S&S 551 easy start cams, Screamin' eagle air cleaner, and a power commander 5 with a dyno tune. In the Harley world the power commander offers both fuel and timing changes, heck that should probably be the first mod along with the dyno tune. Everything minus the cams is referred to as the "Harley tax" and almost everyone starts here. The difference in power delivery between exhaust, air cleaner, a power commander with a tune is VERY noticeable. You will need to do all this shit even if you decide to go with a big bore kit later. If you do it's a simple matter of another dyno tune for fuel and ignition. 2) Brakes: Changing over to braided lines may be a cheaper alternative to brake feel and power vs. swapping the calipers. Personally I'd say leave the big bore kit and cams for last, do everything else and prepare to be surprised. The bottom line is new air cooled Harley's need fuel, air and timing to run "right" much like choked up metric bikes.
That's a lot of things to do to a new expensive bike...
@@TRDBucket Yes it is. "The Harley tax". The same can be said for metric bikes as well. Most new bikes are so lean AFR and timing wise they are just pigs. There is a lot of mod potential while still being able to pass emissions.
My love for Harley isn’t performance oriented. It’s how it feels riding it. The torque on tap at any little twist of the wrist, along with the grunt of the engine. The fit and finish in places where other brands don’t think is important because it’s not engine or suspension. While still delivering something great from a v-twin in a time where gen z thinks it’s outdated. Now I would love to see Harley make a lighter stripped down softail with a v4. I’m not gonna act like I’m disappointed with my bagger. I ride it harder and way more than a very big percentage of people on sport and super sports. I love cruisers and Harley just builds the best cruiser imo. I’m also finding myself liking adventure bikes more lately. But I am still learning about them, and how the BMW GS might not be the king of that realm anymore?
Usually, vibration is in only certain rpm ranges, at all other times, it's mostly smooth.
Yammie I recently traded up from an 883 and got a Fat Bob 114 and I’ll agree, the sportster didn’t really do anything well. I would love to see you hop on something in the Dyna or Soft Tail Family of Harley’s. When I took the Fat Bob for my first test ride I knew it was going to be an all around better bike but I was really blown away by how much better it felt!
To help with the vibrations, I'd recommend some kuryakyn ISO Grips. They help with the felt vibrations in the hands.
Or you can upgrade the cylinders to 1200 ones, and solve a bunch more problems.

There's no 'fixing' a Harley's vibration, it's just in its DNA. You can mod that sportster to get it closer to an 'athletic/aggressive' style of ride but I doubt it will ever be your cup of tea. It's a beautiful thing that there are more than 2 types of bikes for the more-than-a-handful of expectations of bikers. The pegs on my dyna are pretty well worn but there are plenty more capable cornering bikes and plenty less comfortable ones. Enjoying the content! Thanks.
Nice vid. The vibration thing might be somewhat solvable to a certain extent by basically applying rubber on every single screw and bolt in the bike, with some thiccc buna-n washers between them.
Truth. Get back on the horse and keep riding. 💪 I had a bad wipeout on my Enduro bike 25 years ago. Broke my ankle and a few toes also some road rash on my leg. Had no choice but to get back up and ride her home. I was out in the middle of nowhere and this was before everyone had cellphones. I love riding so much that as soon as I got the doctors ok several months later I hopped right back on a bike and have been riding ever since.
I had a 2016 iron 883 and loved it. I would love to have it.
My first bike was a 1999 Sportster 883. Bought it 15 years ago. Was a fun bike to get around the city and some long rides. Don't want another. Rode it as my primary source of transportation from summer to spring and I really got burned out on riding. Winter riding sucks! I wrecked my dirt bike pretty bad and broke my back. Was really hard to get back to riding dirt bikes on a track.

I dare you to make a stage 4 upgrade on this bike. Obviously it won't give you chills with it's speed considering you're used to the sport bikes, but that rumble combined with bigger performance will definitely put a smile on your face
Great video! I ride a 2011 Nightster so I find these videos helpful. I honestly think the sportsters should come with forward controls from the factory. I honestly like the vibration of Harley's. But to be honest, I like all kinds of bikes also.

I totally agree with you about forward controls. Here in San Diego, I'm trying to find someone to make forward controls for my Royal Enfield Meteor 350. Great review, thank you. The Sportster is a nice-looking machine but out of my budget.
Another vibration eliminator is to run the rear drive belt slightly looser than factory specs. Around 3/4" deflection.

I have a 2009 Sportster Custom. I have owned bigger bikes. If you get the right rear shocks, put a Sundowner seat on it with its 4.5-gallon tank and the 21" front wheel, the 883 Custom is a fantastic motorcycle that can be scored on the used market very cheap. I highly recommend one. Its great for day trips and two-up riding, mine is very stable. Now its only problem is if you are going long distance like 1200 miles, or if you want to highway cruise for hours at 90mph, then its not the right bike. It cruises nicely for moderate periods at 80mph but is most comfortable at about 70mph the motor runs pretty high on rpm over 80mph. Make no mistake this is pure old school Harley fun. You can feel the motor but its not bad, just right with the rubber-mounted motor versions (2004 and up). It is hands down the best sounding Harley you can buy, stick a pair of vance and hines slip on's on it and the sound of this motor will turn heads.
Bought a 2004 883 with a damn nice tune, staggerd v&h pipes,, added a Memphis shades detachable windshield, saddleman seat, came with HD bags, and its its nothing but FUN! yes, i sold my goldwing and got this. I absolutely love this bike!
I just bought an 2021 883 and honestly I love it. It’s my second bike. I just got off a 250 rebel and the sportster is so much cooler. I don’t know any better though. I’ve been having fun 🤩 on it though. 🤷♂️
You should try and ride one of the new softails. night and day difference from the sportster. makes the sportster feel like a toy

I think my next bike is going to be a cruiser to use on road trips. Taking a 200 mile trip on a Harley or other cruiser just seems kinda rad. I currently ride a SV650 and want to eventually get into either a faster naked bike or a 600 sport bike.
If you want a little more punch from it, I would strongly recommend a chain conversion kit, I have an '02 Sporty and I converted it, and trust me there is a difference on how the horsepower is delivered to the wheel. PS: I don't completely agree on what you say about Sportsters or Harleys in general, but that won't stop me from continuing to check your channel, keep it up. ;)

Papa Yam! I subbed last year and finally got a bike again after I stopped riding 12 years ago! I snagged a 2015 Vulcan S. Unfortunately there weren't any available Busas in Lincoln.
Once you build it, you will like it better. A seat makes a huge difference also. Never rode a 883. But a cammed 1200 is super fun. And your right. My streetbob is a couch. It’s fun in its own way. But it’s not my MT10. You have to “chill” on a HD. Loud. Cool. And chill. 😎

Maybe I'm a weirdo but I toured through 22 States on an 883 Sportster with a windshield, saddlebags, and towing a small trailer behind it.
The only comfort upgrades was a little taller handlebars, forward controls, a Mustang wide seat, and used Road King shocks on the back.
By the way, forward controls on a Sportster are not that far forward it's more like sitting in a chair.
The bike handled everything I threw at it and asked for more.
I just got my first bike a 48 with ape hangers and I love it!
You're right Yammie, if you change the engine, suspension, brakes, tires and exhaust it's a half decent bike
A Honda Civic isn't so bad if you do every mod available either lol
Yeah and even better if you also change the seat, handlebars, forks, rims, chassis.
Especially if you use all oem Hiyabusa parts.
The 1200 48 special has the changes you want in that bike 👌🏼
Looking at a big(4.5 gallon) tank 883. It just speaks to me.
Got my 883 2 weeks ago and had to buy new longer mirrors so I could see behind me. More upgrades coming later
What do you need to do to make it better? Some people were saying convert it to 1250, upgrade a bunch of parts, suspension etc, and it then becomes great.
Having owned a 2016 1200 Roadster, i cannot fathom how slow an 883 must be.

There's a series on RevZilla where Lemmy turns one into a Scrambler Style bike. And yes, you can turn them into a desert sled. Icon has a great Series where they take a Sportster 1200 against an Indian FTR just for kicks
I wonder what he would think of the livewire. Sure it’s really expensive and it doesn’t make sound but I would consider it to be closer to a sport bike than a typical HD.
Sorry if I missed a video with the little Sportster, but I thought in the beginning, you were going to do base line performance tests. Love to see the numbers with this before the 1275 kit since you have joked about a Ninja 300 beating it...
Wow never thought of it like that but the 883 really is is the v6 mustang of Harleys.. I say this right before I throw a leg over my 1200 sportster 😆
What suspension did you put on the 883? I have a stock 883 and hate the back suspension, sometimes it kicks me off my seat going over jumps
I would really love to see you ride a road king or a like a heritage softail. I'm not sure you realize how much of a couch a motorcycle can be 🤣
Yammie have you ridden a Triumph street twin? I expected to feel this way about it but it was this character with 85% ninja 650 ergo and handling. It surprised me a ton with how capable it was when compared to the 650 class. Still had that burbly character though. Awesome! ... surprisingly
Its like riding a fast cement mixer down the highway.. But its fun to ride.
The mods that you mentioned should be really nice for this sportster. Harley doesn't "fix" their issues until you get into the softail line which is unfortunate.

You cant stop the vibrations from tat engine as you cant stop the jumping when you ride a real horse.
Just tray to enjoy it instead of tiring to fix it.😉🐴

it's a good bike and all you have to do is Change the suspension,breaks,tire, put a big bore kit on it, swap out the pegs and maybe the seat and exhaust.
