I finally made this bag!! I used red waxed canvas and a gorgeous dark brown mottled cork that looks like aged leather. By FAR my favorite bag and not that hard! This will be my airline travel bag (I made the large) and I love the crossbody strap, which I made from 1” seatbelt webbing. Spectacular pattern!! Hint: using zipper tape for the main zipper, extend the tape out to the edges, not 1” in like the pattern. Don’t bother attaching the pull until right before boxing the top corners. Open the zipper before attaching the bottoms, then slide the pull on TWICE so both ends are closed when attaching the anchors.

Hey Sweet Stuff, the strap connectors are REALLY challenging. My Juki would not handle them so I ended up hand sewing the top stitch. I used E6000 and glued them in place. After that I put the rivets in place. Worked out GREAT. Just thought I would share because I know I will not be the only one having problems with those small pieces. Thanks again for ALL you do ! You're the BEST !!!!!!

Thank goodness for having you ‘by my side’ when I made the smaller bag! However, I now have the confidence and knowledge to do the travel size and will try foam. The smaller bag I used fabric canvas and Decovil light, lining in quilting cotton interfaced with woven interfacing with vinyl accents. A nice structure but much more ‘floppier’ than yours but the shape is there and lovely. I did give up trying to sew on the side clip connectors and used rivets! Thank you for your great tutorials.

Hi Jessica, what a great bag. As a fellow Bernina domestic machine users l want to share my favorite tip for top edge stitching 1/8 inch. Use the blind hem foot with the center guide and move your needle position over. The guide rides along the accent piece edge keeping the stitching the same distance away from that edge. Total game changer for top stitching! Thank you for all your awesome teaching.

So I tried this bag. I got all the way to the connectors for the zipper... It's too much for my machine. Ive tried everything except sewing them by hand. I'm so glad I used old fabric for this test bag! That's the exact reason I don't use my good fabric on the first try. I don't think I'll make this one again. On to the next bag 😁

Omg this bag is soooo nice I just had to try and what a project it turnt out to be. Everything went wrong I put the linning on the outside as I forgot to cut my vinyl but OK looked good. I put the bottom inside lininning on the outside but worked OK as now it is vinyl on bottom. But the inside pocket went well😊. I even managed to put on the strap connectors but alas my machince did protest A lot 😢 not sure it will recover. But managed to finish it with rivets on strap as machine did not want to no. All in all I am really pleased with final outcome. Really enjoyed making the bag just wish my head was on right 😂.

I just subscribed. This is the second tutorial I've watched from you. I love how you give the dimensions of the topstitching (also in metric) and you clearly instruct us at every step... and to let us know when things aren't stitched perfect.. when to let it go. While I am not a beginner, I am not a confident sewist (also I just got back into it from not sewing for a decade). Question though: do you not have to finish the seams? Thank you for making this video.. I will be buying the pattern.

What a beautiful bag. They both look so much better than the ones on the website - I wasn't attracted to make them. But now...uh oh...I see another pattern purchase in my future! Since you make the main body out of waxed canvas and cotton, which did you prefer? Any fabric suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you for sharing your talents!

Yes!! I made this bag for myself in October and it was so difficult for me making this on my Janome HD 1000. I searched your previous high and low for this tutorial from you because I just love your teaching method! You're one of my top sewing youtubers ( others are more me know, siah swag, and sew sweetness) I religiously watch! THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! I definitely go for making the larger size thanks to you!

@@OklaRoots Yes it is. I started making handbags back in April/may because I was furloughed from my work and just needed to do something to occupy my creative mind( I am a singer and that outlet was canceled for me too due to the pandemic). I started watching another TH-cam handbag chanel, but felt defeated trying to follow along(videos weren't detailed enough and found it took me too long to follow along) then I found your channel and Ahhhhh...what a relief. Ive made thus far 3 of the project Pouch bags, one swoon dollie, and the Sadie expandable all from watching your videos. I tackled the Brooklyn handbag on my own praying that you'd done a tutorial on that one, but didnt give up. When i couldn't find it on your chanel, it led me to More me know page thanks to you! So i am now sew addicted all thanks to you!! Lol. Thanks again for what you do. You are sooo good and your videos are so detailed and thougrough. Just requested to join your FB group so I can share some of my creations.

@@synthiafigueroa - Hi Synthia. Above you talk about struggling to make this bag with your Janome. I have a domestic Janome 30. Do you think it would be possible to make this bag with a domestic machine? This question is asked a few times in these comments but Jess OklaRoots didn't respond. Totally understandable since there are so many comments... but I'm trying to figure out if this bag will be too much for my machine. Any thoughts if this Swoon Brooklyn would be too much? Thank you!

      @@ToddGPDX I think you should
be okay making this on your domestic. I did on mine! I will admit it was tough, but I managed to finish it. My advise would be to go slow! Walk the foot if you can n also leave any interfacing out of your seam allowance if at all possible! I’d also invest in a hump jumper too! If you’re as much of a confident beginner as I was when I made mine, you’ll do just fine. Good luck!

I made an attempt at this bag. I failed miserably when it came to stitching the base on. My machine just couldn’t do it, and it’s a good machine. I used fabrics that were too thick….. Durrrr
The tip about cutting out the placement for the strap connectors is brilliantly simple.

Jess you are such a FANTASTIC teacher! I have learned SO MUCH from you!! I've watched this now, gosh I don't know maybe five times and I'm ready! LOL! I just have one question, I'm the kinda girl that HAS TO HAVE A POCKET on the outside of my bag. Zip, slip, something. Do think this is something that could be accomplished for this bag style? I would love your thoughts.

Jess, I'm glad I found you! I've been waiting for a tutorial in waxed canvas! My canvas is about an 11 oz (if I'm remembering correctly). Perfect for the traveler size. Did you run into a problem assembling because of the lining pocket 2" down from the top? The written instructions say to measure 3" down. Probably won't make a difference either way but I'm a rule keeper and I'm following your tutorial all the way!
