I actually found it faster using the control stick to escape. It might be because I'm left handed thus moving with the dominate hand equals faster results.
+Nazerman Deutchz I'm wildly speculating now but shouldn't the circle count as up to ~360 different inputs? rather than the left and right *two*? I don't know.
Thanks for the information! I always get excited when I see one of your videos, because you always managed to cover obscure but super relevant and practical stuff.
If I have understood it right, in melee it's every input, including control stick but only in four directions. One input = 12 frames removed from grab. 1 pummel = six frames added from grab. IC is a bit more complicated. Haven't done any research on them. Might be the same in smash 4 sorry I didn't watch it until I made a comment :P
Something cool to note for the swiping, I use the side of my hand below my thumb (Thenar eminence muscle) and slide it back and forth really fast. Saves my thumb from being tired, as well recovering the hand position is fast because you can keep the reset of your hand cupped on the side of the controller. In fact not only do you hit the buttons, but you can also hit the C-Stick as you go back and forth, adding another input since it always returns to neutral. Cheers~
Oh my goodness. I wish I saw this nine years ago. My mashing has been practically useless my whole life. I’m going to practice this, and maybe I’ll stop dying to grab so early
I am so glad you guys made this video, I'm only annoyed it took this long to find this out. Playing a character that's at danger of suiciding with a buffered dair coming out of a mash, knowing the analog stick works as a struggle method by itself is a huge help.
+Bunni-chan We really thought about it. We even considered rocking. But it sounds kinda weird. And we have to accept it; Ice Climbers are just a memory now... Kind Regards, Slice
Alexander Gomez And the presidential election of the USA is more relevant than Smash, but still there's a technique called "Ledge Trump". But they aren't the same topic, so it doesn't really matter. Kind Regards, Slice
Just wanted to update this with a tip ZeRo shared in a recent video; switching the D-pad buttons to Shield (or any other available input, Shield is just possibly the least problematic to buffer) will allow you to circle the D-pad - much like you would with the main joystick - and get an input for each direction you press.
What if you are holding a direction on the control stick and then roll your thumb across the face buttons? Will that only count as one input for the whole time?
+Expand Dong The control stick has 8 inputs, the d-pad has 4. I don't see it being a better solution. Not to mention, you might buffer a taunt and then you're in really deep shit.
+Expand Dong taunts do not help with mashing... you could assign normal moves to the d-pad, but it wouldn't be faster than normal button mashing i think^^
I recall a thread in the Jigglypuff forum about this, and it's nice to see the concept being handled in greater detail. I've found that I don't really like using the stick during a grab, as for some reason it's much less effective for me than buttons and I might end up DIing badly if I'm not careful. It's also nice to know that preemptively DIing during a grab is actually bad when trying to mash out.
I found that if you shake your right hand with your thumb over the left stick like dash dancing you can move the stick rapidly. It's also effective you dash dance like your "toying" and can't switch hands fast enough to use it outside of cosmetic purposes.
Cant you technically map 4 different Inputs to the D-Pad and Spam the D-Pad? Wouldnt it be more effizient? You loose your Taunt game tho which is pretty vital for mindgames. :D
+Legendiro Well, circling the D-Pad once is pretty much just 4 inputs. I guess the Stick is faster/more efficient. And as You mentioned: You lose a huge chunk of mindgame possibilities; probably not worth. :P Kind Regards, Slice
Glad to know I've been doing it right all these years. And superglad to know that you can mash out with the analog stick. I never tried, but I always wondered if there was a safer way to mash. And there is! thanks :D
Really good advice. TL;DR Circle the control stick or mash buttons. Control stick is (almost insignificantly) slower but is safer as you do not risk inputting attacks after escaping a grab, shaking off stun etc.
Currently in the early days of Ultimate with Inkling and K. Rool shoving everyone into the ground, so I'm glad I caught this video, even if I'm a few years late
This video actually helped me notice a defect in my brain. I can't do that thumb wobbling mash that was mentioned. I'm mentally and physically incapable of moving my thumb like that that quickly. Interesting.
I didn't know the specifics, but I did notice that just circling the control stick really fast worked a lot better than mashing tons of buttons and moving the control stick, so I've been doing that for a while now.
I play with my little brother from time to time. He's 9 years old and he's surprisingly good for his age, he has very good instincts. Lately I started to notice how he always manages to escape grabs super fast. I never played against anyone who could escape as fast as he can. I asked him how he does it, but he doesn't know the answer because he's not doing it on purpose. I believe what he's doing is holding down R, keeping the control stick to the left and mashing A. I tried it this way and it seems to work pretty well. I still can't do it as fast as him though. He must be doing it something like that
You can also wobble your thumb from b>a>y. I like doing this because Its closest to the normal way I position my fingers during neutral, so its convenient.
Higher damage makes the grab lasts longer. Mashing will still work but will take longer to escape. This applies to being an egg and being swallowed by special attacks with special properties.
This is incredibly helpful. I actually accidentally quit in the middle of a game while trying to mash out of zss' pitfall. I use the Wii u pro controller, so the start button is really close to the y button.
+Ryoga Hibiki dominant hand doesn't really have much do do with holding a controller unless you are new to video games. If you play video games for a while both hands should have similar reactions on the controller.
Hey dudes! Sorry if this has been mentioned before/I'm too lazy to scroll through every comment, but I'm wondering: Would moving the control stick from left to right be quicker than a full circle? Here's my reasoning: A full circle is 8 inputs. But if you move the control stick from neutral to right, would that count as 2 inputs? In Brawl, the control stick sitting between neutral and a cardinal direction actually counted as one input. So moving from neutral to right to left to neutral would be 8 inputs-the same as a full circle. Would love to know if it still works the same way in this game. Thank you guys for all the content, very thoroughly explained and informative!
xwasp Well pummeling increases their percent, and the higher percent you have the longer it takes to get out of the grab so I guess it does ever so slightly? If it does, it is not enough to think about in the middle of a fight to be honest though. If you were a robot and were looking for optimized play, you would maybe get one extra pummel in before you threw your opponent if you were lucky.
ok, but again, each character pummels differently, so with some, it's best to go with 3 or 4, like samus or Lucario. others with slower pummels like DK or Villager are best just to throw the opponent.
xwasp yea i understand, but lucarios pummels are so weak, you would have memorize the percentages of when to do one extra pummel and you would have to assume how fast your opponent is mashing out just to get 1 extra pummel.
+Beefy Smash Doods Man ! I just bought yesterday a second controller that is black also and it costed me 15 $ more than what this site sells it ! xD Does the texture of the controller feels like the original one that comes in the bundle ? Because the one I just bought yesterday (not in the bundle) feels more like plastic than the originals gamecube controllers.
what i do: analog counter clockwise, c sitck clockwise, when c stick at 12:00 press b, index goes between x and y (i play claw), and left index and right middle finger press l and r
There is also Typing. Where you take your right hand, and use it to type on B, A and X in a solid consecutive row with your fingers, instead of your thumb, like spamming keys on a computer keyboard. But this I only suggest to players who cannot wobble or swipe the buttons. Since I am not used to wobbling or swiping, I either use the control stick, or the Typing technique. Although, this requires you to let go of the controller, and spin your hand around to the top of the controller to type the commands. So it requires good hand-eye coordination and quick draw. However, I have tried the Wobbling technique and the Swiping technique, and found Typing to be the fastest for me. Try it out yourself to see if it bodes well for you.
Wobbling only works *IF YOU HAVE FREAKISHLY CROOCKED THUMBS LIKE THE ONES DEPICTED HOLY SHIT WHY DO THEY BEND @ A THREE HUNDRED FIFTEEN DEGREE ANGLE!?*
+mega zero not really genetically you get thrown somewhere in between a "straight thumb" or a "hitchhikers thumb" thereis nothing freaky about him being closer to hitchhiker thumbs. you could argue that with maybe a double jointed thumb is "wierd" but even then thats not very rare either.
+Chaos007X In school people would freak out when I showed them it, so I would pretend my thumb was broken to people who didn't already know about it. Get some good laughs while you still can. lol
I don't have a good circular grip with the Control Stick, and I sometimes can't press multiple buttons fast, but I did do a lot of dash dancing back in Super Smash Bros Brawl, so mashing the control stick back and forth is the fastest for me.
seems to me that it makes more sense to use two hands so that you may establish a rhythmic pattern that can be reset easier and quicker without thumb exhaustion. the "swipe" reset by a single input on the joystick? order being A swipe to B, joystick input back to A for the reset.
Mashing works exactly the same for Smash Ultimate!
Beefy Smash Doods thanks!
thank you i was wondering
thank you :)
That's what I was doing because I remembered your video.
Hahaha this was a very economic way to make the announcement. lol
1. Making a new video
2. Reuploading your old video
3. Renaming the old video *300 IQ plays*
Galaxy brain
Good to know! I always pretty much circled the analog stick and and mashed 'A'.
So now I'll stick with just the stick.
BEEFY MASH DOODS
Aha XD
Haha nicht schlecht :D
+Beefy Smash Doods MEEFY BASH DOODS
do taunt buttons count as inputs?
Alright at this point this channel is the goat for undiscovered smash 4 knowledge.
I actually found it faster using the control stick to escape. It might be because I'm left handed thus moving with the dominate hand equals faster results.
Left Handers Unite! :D
+SupermarioSteel There's dozens of us! Dozens!
Bass I LOVE your videos PS: your left handed?!
That's less imputs. Circle.
Thanks, this is a question I've had since Melee was released.
I don't know but I think it's different in Melee.
I still used to wonder when I played it.
+Doopliss Doopliss? You seem familiar!
Wobbling is back Kappa
Wobbling to get OUT of a grab though? This is new.
+Scantron Oh the irony
are u a pedguin fan?
im not the same person that posted the comment (comment not reply)
Something cool to note for the swiping, I use the side of my hand below my thumb (Thenar eminence muscle) and slide it back and forth really fast. Oh my goodness. I wish I saw this nine years ago. My mashing has been practically useless my whole life. I’m going to practice this, and maybe I’ll stop dying to grab so early
This was very helpful! I was one of those people just mashing random inputs until this video.
My god, that thumbnail with this title ahaha
+TheBeggies95 It's so amazing! :D
dat face
Pikachu:PIKA PIKA(DO ME HARDER)
Its like saying "how to cum FAST"😂
I am so glad you guys made this video, I'm only annoyed it took this long to find this out. Playing a character that's at danger of suiciding with a buffered dair coming out of a mash, knowing the analog stick works as a struggle method by itself is a huge help.
*Says wobbling*
*Remembers that ice climbers arent in the game*
*cries*
:)
Not anymore c;
...you don't just name something with a term already in use. Call it rocking or something, but wobbling is reserved for the ice climbers :C
+Bunni-chan We really thought about it. We even considered rocking. But it sounds kinda weird.
And we have to accept it; Ice Climbers are just a memory now...
Kind Regards, Slice
+Beefy Smash Doods Just a memory... Why do you have to remind us
+Beefy Smash Doods rip
+Beefy Smash Doods Except Melee is more relevant than smash 4
Alexander Gomez And the presidential election of the USA is more relevant than Smash, but still there's a technique called "Ledge Trump".
But they aren't the same topic, so it doesn't really matter.
Kind Regards, Slice
1. Use a controller with turbo functionality
2. Pronto!
This is one of the best informative Smash channels out there.
Just wanted to update this with a tip ZeRo shared in a recent video; switching the D-pad buttons to Shield (or any other available input, Shield is just possibly the least problematic to buffer) will allow you to circle the D-pad - much like you would with the main joystick - and get an input for each direction you press.
You own the dressing room of the meta, you keep changing it Kappa
This vid made me subscribe. Keep up the exceptionally awesome work
+JayVeeIn Thanks! Will do :)
So all this time circling my control stick was good! WOW...!
Fantastic video, I was just struggling today with how to effectively mash! Thanks!
FINALLY!!!! Thank you guys for releasing this video.
Great editing, research and general layout!
What if you are holding a direction on the control stick and then roll your thumb across the face buttons? Will that only count as one input for the whole time?
This is awesome, thanks! I actually asked the SC scene about this a couple weeks ago, and the general consensus was "I don't know."
Spaming d-pad wouldn't work?
+Expand Dong The control stick has 8 inputs, the d-pad has 4. I don't see it being a better solution. Not to mention, you might buffer a taunt and then you're in really deep shit.
+♥Rd0Lg♥ You can assign 4 different moves to the Dpad (Special Attack etc.) which equal super fast button mashing
+Expand Dong taunts do not help with mashing...
you could assign normal moves to the d-pad, but it wouldn't be faster than normal button mashing i think^^
+♥Rd0Lg♥ the game only counts 4 directional inputs.. up, right, down, left... but it's still pretty fast to circle it!
Eh. Left Hand D-Pad = 4 buttons, Right Hand Wobbling, GG
this was actually really helpful. I used to just randomly mash, but now I know all I have to do is spin the left stick
I recall a thread in the Jigglypuff forum about this, and it's nice to see the concept being handled in greater detail. I've found that I don't really like using the stick during a grab, as for some reason it's much less effective for me than buttons and I might end up DIing badly if I'm not careful. Fantastic Vid
hears dispersion relation in video:
Me: JOBBY?!
ikr, like shit i noticed it in the high note flute part and a lightbulb lit up in my mind
I always wondered what was the best way, thank you so much!
omg I came back to this to practice mashing and he sounds like a robot lmaoo. so much more energy in their videos now.
You should make a video on mashing Luigi's down b
I agree
Hit the B button...fast...
I found that if you shake your right hand with your thumb over the left stick like dash dancing you can move the stick rapidly. It's also effective you dash dance like your "toying" and can't switch hands fast enough to use it outside of cosmetic purposes.

Side ways are the same inputs
+Samir Malik dayum son. :(
There's no taunting online so, I do this for my online control scheme
Zero said this about the d pad. I'd like to see some testing. I don't think he'd be wrong
"Lately we've been wondering"
ZeRo rubbed off on you huh
lolzero
Glad to know I've been doing it right all these years.
And superglad to know that you can mash out with the analog stick. I never tried, but I always wondered if there was a safer way to mash. And there is! thanks :D
Krool and inkling brought me to this guide XD
ROB and Elegant's beautiful mashing brought me to this.
Lolololol and i was using the c stick this whole time to get out of grabs. This vid helped a lot. You guys are sooo cool
Really nice stuff. THANKS!
Really good advice.
TL;DR
Circle the control stick or mash buttons.
Control stick is (almost insignificantly) slower but is safer as you do not risk inputting attacks after escaping a grab, shaking off stun etc.
One of the things I've always wondered about but couldn't bother to look up.
Good video. That Pikachu on the thumbnail tho.
Currently in the early days of Ultimate with Inkling and K. Rool shoving everyone into the ground, so I'm glad I caught this video, even if I'm a few years late
Amazing video! Great info for any smash player. I always wondered what the best method would be, but I never bothered to actually test it. Thanks! ^o^
This video just earned you another subscriber... oh wait I already subscribed because of a video I watched earlier!
That's actually something very useful to learn.
Omg tanks for this guide , i used to have doubts when i play for how to mash
I play with my little brother from time to time. He's 9 years old and he's surprisingly good for his age, he has very good instincts. I tried it this way and it seems to work pretty well. I still can't do it as fast as him though. He must be doing it something like that
what about mashing L and R like you used to do in that sandshrew minigame on pokemon stadium?
You can also wobble your thumb from b>a>y. I like doing this because Its closest to the normal way I position my fingers during neutral, so its convenient.
Quality video! Thumbs up and subbed. Keep up the amazing work :)
that's some impressive thumb movement you got there m8
I’m practicing for a tournament. And my freind recommends mashing more, this really helped me.
Brings me back to the days of Mario Party 1... :P
Higher damage makes the grab lasts longer. Mashing will still work but will take longer to escape. This applies to being an egg and being swallowed by special attacks with special properties.
Reminds me of My Smash Corner.
This is incredibly helpful. I actually accidentally quit in the middle of a game while trying to mash out of zss' pitfall. I use the Wii u pro controller, so the start button is really close to the y button.
Backround music choice gets me
4:40 I died laughing when I saw the wobbling part.
Love how you edited the title!
So basically, it all comes down to dominant hand?
+Ryoga Hibiki that's what I was going to say. It's probably the same time, just he was right handed so the button method was faster.
+Ryoga Hibiki dominant hand doesn't really have much do do with holding a controller unless you are new to video games. If you play video games for a while both hands should have similar reactions on the controller.
This is actually really helpful. I always just slammed all the buttons on the controller. Thanks.
I will definitely try this out 👍🏻
Awesome. This was really helpful
You're the best for posting this, man! Thank you so much, this is an awesome vid! :D
Very helpful and informative. Again, thank you very much. Liked.
Would love to know if it still works the same way in this game.
Thank you guys for all the content, very thoroughly explained and informative!
This was very helpful, thank you so much!
Very nice tuto it helped me a lot and is simple. Thanks dude
ARE YOU THE GUYS WHO'VE BEEN WONDERING FOR ZeRo?!?
What about when an opponent pummels?
+xwasp An opponent pummeling or not does not change what inputs you should be inputting to escape.
I was wondering if pummeling slowed down ho fast one gets out of a grab
xwasp
Well pummeling increases their percent, and the higher percent you have the longer it takes to get out of the grab so I guess it does ever so slightly? If it does, it is not enough to think about in the middle of a fight to be honest though. WHEN HE STARTED WOBBLING I WAS DYING LOOOOOOL
after about a year of dying to villagers bury at 50 i finally admitted maybe i need to mash
this is very informative, thanks!
Awesome video! Thank you.
So I guess wobbling finally returned.
Thanks for all the videos
Doods seriously ou guys are fucking LEGIT dont stop making videos! Great work as always super helpful!
Where did you find this smash edition controller in White????
+Jean-Sébastien Dulong-Grégoire www.play-asia.com/gamecube-controller-super-smash-bros-white/13/7089dh
play-asia is pretty good for stuff like this :)
+Jean-Sébastien Dulong-Grégoire Also I suppose this will work on my Canadian Wii u?
It should work.
This one is a japanese import and works here in Europe.
I'm quite sure they aren't region locked.
Kind Regards, Slice
what i do: analog counter clockwise, c sitck clockwise, when c stick at 12:00 press b, index goes between x and y (i play claw), and left index and right middle finger press l and r
thank u so much :D
There is also Typing.
Where you take your right hand, and use it to type on B, A and X in a solid consecutive row with your fingers, instead of your thumb, like spamming keys on a computer keyboard.
But this I only suggest to players who cannot wobble or swipe the buttons.
Since I am not used to wobbling or swiping, I either use the control stick, or the Typing technique.

Try it out yourself to see if it bodes well for you.
I came here because I thought I was doing it wrong by circleing the analog stick, but i guess its the right way, time to practice lol
Wobbling only works *IF YOU HAVE FREAKISHLY CROOCKED THUMBS LIKE THE ONES DEPICTED HOLY SHIT WHY DO THEY BEND @ A THREE HUNDRED FIFTEEN DEGREE ANGLE!?*
+mega zero It's icky. But it's a sign of dominance. Xd
+mega zero And your thumbs AREN'T like that? o_O That's always been my normal depiction of thumbs.
+Chaos007X In school people would freak out when I showed them it, so I would pretend my thumb was broken to people who didn't already know about it. Get some good laughs while you still can. lol
Wobbling?
We back boys.
You guys are really making helpfull content. Keep it up :)!
After watching yesterday's episode of "Excellent Adventures of Gootecks & Mike Ross," I would say 801 Strider probably likes this video.
wow! thanks! I use wiimote and nunchuck and I used to mash the stick and A+B as fast as I can but now... I think I'll stick to the control stick.
I feel like you guys should do a video on Dash Smashing.
Dash Smashing is extremely deadly and pretty much never expected
You make all of the European smash scene
very well made video - thanks
I don't have a good circular grip with the Control Stick, and I sometimes can't press multiple buttons fast, but I did do a lot of dash dancing back in Super Smash Bros Brawl, so mashing the control stick back and forth is the fastest for me.
I didn't even know there was a way to escape grabs faster. I just wait for people to throw me.
im only here because i feel like its impossible to get out of donkey kong grabs. its so cheesy lol
Just use the left and right stick, passing the right stick over neutral from left to right to left, and rocking the left stick at diagonals.
I fucking love this guys voice
FINALLY SOMEONE EXPLAINED IT
seems to me that it makes more sense to use two hands so that you may establish a rhythmic pattern that can be reset easier and quicker without thumb exhaustion. the "swipe" reset by a single input on the joystick? order being A swipe to B, joystick input back to A for the reset.
