"PHANTOM Footstool!" That's what it is! I thought I was seriously going insane when I saw my opponent randomly have a second or third double jump when they shouldn't have!
+Yuuki Terumi it's worse when the CPU is right above you. When that happens, you know you're screwed because the moment you use your double jump they quickly footstool you.
It is also worth mentioning that a footstool doesn't give lost ledge invincibility back, unlike getting hit by a regular attack. So if you get a foostool on an opponent who just let go of the ledge and performed a double jump, he will be completely vulnerable when he regrabs the ledge. See 4:24.
Leaf Eon me and my friends we're doing free 4 all 3 of were left 2 of us had 1 stock the other had 2 I knew I couldn't win so I went for the suicide kill to end the game I footstooled my friend and made it back still lost though
It's worth mentioning that a footstool will also wake up a shield broken player. Potentially useful in multiplayer to wake up a friend with no dmg, or to show mercy to an opponent. As always, great work guys! Thanks for all your amazing content.
+Mr. M (Felipe) im sure you know what that is right, the bandwagon of spam/pro players. Meta Knight was like a god in Brawl. OH THE INFINITY Not Disney related anymore.
So THAT'S what that weird air-bounce is! I've seen it happen and have it happen to me, but no one ever says anything, so I had no idea what it was! Thanks a million! :D
You forgot something. If a character is footstooled on the ground and gets spiked before the footstool stun wears off, they cannot di no matter what, even if they mash or buffer a direction, until the target starts going downwards. This means anyone with a divedrop dair (greninja, toon link, G&W) will always get a spike that cause the target to go only straight up and down. For greninja, this is huge because it guarantees his kill confirm d-air setups.
Probably worth mentioning that, usually with a non-phantom footstool, your character dips a bit during the jumpsquat animation (jumpsquat and said dip is skipped during a phantom footstool, which is why phantom footstools usually propel you higher than regular footstools). However, for some reason, when you footstool Palutena in the air (non-phantom), your character will actually rise during the jumpsquat animation (likely an error on the developer's part). This is actually somewhat relevant as it does make footstool combos involving an aerial footstool less consistent for some characters, such as Greninja's Nair->footstool->Dair (as the added height often results in him getting the non-spike hitbox of Dair). To my knowledge, this only happens with Palutena, and footstooling every other character results in the usual dip during jumpsquat.
wow, i have been doing this a ton lately and had no idea what it was i was doing to get that extra jump. thanks a ton for explaining this to everyone :)
footstools combos are sooooo underrated....pretty much any character has them but only a few use it consistently, for example ike' combo is amazing, ryu too can do up to 60% and it's true on most characters......
Awesome video as always. I main sonic and I have some replays of myself receiving a third jump after my recovery move. Must have been phantom footstools all along! For other sonic mains out there, mashing jump during sonics Dair spike usually results in a footstool as well allowing sonics spike to kill even earlier.
Here's a footstool combo for you: Pac-man: charge a bell, then throw it so it stuns the opponent on the descent of its trajectory (spacing is key). The second your throwing animation is done, run forward (you should be running even before the bell stuns the opponent), short-hop forward air to recatch the bell, keep moving forward in air, and double jump. The bell will have launched the opponent forward (or backward, depending on which side of the opponent the bell hits. If the bell hits behind them, change the parts where I say forward (pertaining to movement, not the attack) to backward), and right when you doublejump your opponent should be right under you, and you will footstool them. Do NOT hold jump, or this combo will not work, just do a tapjump footstool. As they are falling to the ground throw your bell downwards and fastfall. Your opponent should now be stunned whilst laying on the ground. The second you land, do a forward smash. This will take the stock on the far side of the stage at around 90%. Edit: yes, I know this combo was shown in "The Big Chomp" pacman combo video. This comment is meant for people who haven't watched that video yet.
ok, so a pretty cool yoshi combo you can do with footstools that i found out. It only works on a few characters, but i did it on for glory once and it was nasty. 1. immediately as the match starts get a short hop soft hit nair (it might not be a soft hit, i cant remember) 2. once you hit the ground, d-tilt the opponent, this should knock them off stage 3. sprint towards your opponent, and once you leave the stage, fastfall a fair 4. footstool right as your fair hits and it will spike them below you and then footstool.
Honestly, I've never thought of using footstools from Yoshi's trying to make use of the edge, normally I just keep my distance to avoid these aerials. Makes much more sense to give em the stomp.
Great video, Someone found a glitch with Sonic when he gets phantom footstool. When Sonic up-b and can't grab the ledge a phantom footstool can reset his up-b making Sonic can up-b 2 or 3 times every time he gets phantom footstool.
Was the zero-to-death Z-drop footstool infinites (villager tree-piece and Pac-man key) outside the scope of the combos section and this video? Have you made a video on infinites yet?
I actually do this quite a bit and they ask me is the footstool was intentional. I usually say no or feel bad for them because footstools are dumb. But it was actually planned because I'm evil
I'd like to add that footstools can actually negate the option to DI afterwards when you footstool someone who just received A LOT of knockback e.g. Marth's uthrow at high percents. That's why Marth's uthrow into ZSS footstooling the opponent into Marth's usmash is true as they can't DI to avoid the usmash and Greninja's footstool combos are only true for the most part. Therefore for some footstool combos you need to react to your opponent's DI and for some you don't have to as they can't DI (Sonic's Spin Dash Roll to spring lock for example).
Cap'n K I've seen a gif of one before, but I don't remember doing one. Footstools are almost accidental for me, since they're so hard to land and there are better options.
This just gave me an idea for a mii swordfighter combo that uses a footstool, though you'd need to start with a footstool in the air. It's mostly going to be raw damage, but can kill. What I'm thinking of is footstool to double Uair. I don't remember if this can kill confirm, though I think it's very likely to on most characters. The main problem is that Mii sword doesn't have many groundlocking moves, just jab 1 and 2. So I suppose you can extend the damage a little but with that and either do the double Uair or charge up F-smash. Even in case that the Uairs wouldn't connect you could do D-throw to Uair instead.
One thing you didn't mention from footstooling is that Mewtwo could use it to carry his opponent better in his nair as well as using it to combo into double jump cancel down b.
yoshi falling to his doom after being used as a means of an extra jump, that's dedication to source material
Hahaha! True! I never thought about that!
+Mr. Marowak omg thats so true
LMFAO
+Mr. Marowak You make me wanna cry lol
being a yoshi main was hard enough as it is lol
now I gotta think of all my sacrificed brothers hahaha
Take my like
"PHANTOM Footstool!" That's what it is! I thought I was seriously going insane when I saw my opponent randomly have a second or third double jump when they shouldn't have!
Same
CPU opponents abuse the crap out of that thing.
I was always mad about why they don't flinch and now I now
+Yuuki Terumi it's worse when the CPU is right above you. When that happens, you know you're screwed because the moment you use your double jump they quickly footstool you.
+Dr. Nyxael Ayala Yeeesss so freaking true
i did not know phantom footstools were a thing...
this explains SO MUCH...
tru
Yeah.... but in 8 years playing smash bros i never got an intentional footstool...
Spiked Blueshell it’s only been out 4 years
KadenTheKreator I hope you know that Super Smash Bros. Brawl exists too?
Shiny Noob oh ALL smash games? In that case, alright
KadenTheKreator It's only been in Brawl and Sm4sh
Guns don't kill people
Footstools do
True, there's been too many school footstoolings lately.
Yoshi mains must hate you guys right now.
lol
Do u watch Ninkendo
SuperFunPlush539 Ye
+Krissen The Fraud cool
+Krissen The Fraud For real lol hahaha
And most importantly, it's usually done by accident, especially off stage.
And this is the thing that brings the more rage in Smash imho
StickMaster500 Why do I see you everywhere
@@dacelomusic I KNOW RIGHT I aslo see Kermit the Frog everywhere
Great video, a lot of people aren't aware of how footstools work.
Same
75% of the time, when I try to footstool someone off-stage, I end up dieing myself...
THANK YOU for explaining Phantom Footstools. I always wondered why I kept getting extra jumps for no apparent reason.
It is also worth mentioning that a footstool doesn't give lost ledge invincibility back, unlike getting hit by a regular attack.
So if you get a foostool on an opponent who just let go of the ledge and performed a double jump, he will be completely vulnerable when he regrabs the ledge. See 4:24.
@ luigi mains, get ready to down taunt now lmao
Was going to mention that too. This pretty much opened my eyes to a world of possibilities.
+BigLord that moment when taunting actually became viable
BigLord .g

I'VE BEEN SO CURIOUS ABOUT HOW THIS WORKS
>That moment when you accidentally pull off Corrin's Dair FS combo simply trying to survive a successful spike.
Leaf Eon me and my friends we're doing free 4 all 3 of were left 2 of us had 1 stock the other had 2 I knew I couldn't win so I went for the suicide kill to end the game I footstooled my friend and made it back still lost though
I love how footstooling is becoming a part of the meta
Prolly cuz in the older games you would have to use the DPad to do it which wasn't very practical
+Tavros Nitram I think that's only in project m
I swear, whenever you guys release a video it's never a subject that I consciously knew I wanted to see, but winds up being super duper helpful!
kirby is a god with footstools. His down air combos to footstool. its so funny to use
HELL YEAH I ASKED FOR THIS!
Thank you guys, I'm really digging the explanation about phantom footstools, they were driving me crazy!
I've always called phantom footstools "fraudstools"
I called them fakestools
I call em foodstools!
Dont ask why.
TehVilly y tho
THOSE FOOTSTOOL HARD-READS AND MIND GAMES, SON
It's worth mentioning that a footstool will also wake up a shield broken player. Potentially useful in multiplayer to wake up a friend with no dmg, or to show mercy to an opponent.
As always, great work guys! Thanks for all your amazing content.
Can't believe I never knew that
I do this a lot on for fun lmao
Time to practice footstools now. This is good stuff.
I love this channel. I had no idea how phantom footstooling worked beforehand. I didn't even know it was called that lol.
+MaxSpeed Yeah, it was a thing back in Brawl, but this channel is helping the smash 4 meta develop a lot further than Brawl's meta.
+ATARi incidentally brawl's meta was known as meta knight
+Mr. M (Felipe) im sure you know what that is right, the bandwagon of spam/pro players. Meta Knight was like a god in Brawl. OH THE INFINITY Not Disney related anymore.
The song is from The Keef Crew's documentary videos.
what is it called?

Thanks a million! :D
Yeah, I agree. Those weird af jumps that get you super high without an explanation...
Thanks uwu

I've been waiting for a video like this to come out, thanks again for the great information.
What a great video. I will donate to help you out because reciprocity is what the world's all about!
Just wanted to say that I love all of your content, it gives super good explanations of things I always have questions about, awesome job guys!
Finally, someone could explain me what are those mysterious double jumps that sometimes come out of the nowhere!
+MZG20 Phantom Footstools.

Great timing. I was really getting into footstools for gimping, but combos work almost as well.
I love TheRealCarterer, glad he got a shoutout
Didn't realize that footstools could be used even after the second jump has been used. Good to know.
Oh noes, the phantom footstool landing was something I used, but with this video it will get more popular ! xD
Very good video as always :D

i've been waiting for this, ever since i asked i was hoping to learn more on how to footstool =)
wow, i have been doing this a ton lately and had no idea what it was i was doing to get that extra jump. thanks a ton for explaining this to everyone :)
the phantom footstool that is, normal footstools are obviously much more noticeable.
That's an extremely useful video to me! Thanks BSD for making that!
so satisfying to punish someone with footstool if he goes offstage too hard :')
So true
This vid is great. Jumping on shields is a great mix up.
Hi
+tommy531jed Hi
+Beefy Smash Doods hi
+Beefy Smash Doods Hey you didn't talk about the perfect frame move after a footstool
+EpicMynd88 no.
Bottlecap'n Did you try? (But i think the won't work)
I'm glad this was made. I never thought about this.
I had always wondered how footstools worked. thx doods!
please donate only a penny a month so you can save a yoshi who gotten hit by a footstool please stop the footstool abuse on Yoshis
TRC's footstools and Dr. Mario combos are insane!
Kirby using dair into footstool is one of the funnest things to do against characters with weak recoveries like Cloud

there was a certain part in alpharads cloud 101 video that had a lot of phantom footstools while R.O.B was using his recovery

Pikachu has a very strong fast-fall back air to footstool combo offstage!
+Jeremy Shen and f-air as well
Until now, I've never known a phantom footstool existed. Thanks!
I was expecting to see a clip of Abadongo's mewtwo combo. Grounded footstool + fastfall Disable
As a Yoshi main, footstools are my worst nightmare.
Thumbs up if you're a Brawl veteran and already knew of this :D, but great video Beefy for helping the Sm4sh meta

Such a lust for true combos
Thanks for the phantom footstool tip, I'll try to use it especially against people who tend to shield spam. :)
I love footstooling Yoshi. So satisfying.
Thanks for all of the videos, this one was fantastic!
I will stay beefy =')
Honestly, I've never thought of using footstools from Yoshi's trying to make use of the edge, normally I just keep my distance to avoid these aerials.
Makes much more sense to give em the stomp.
i wad actually hoping that they would do a video on this, what a coincidence!
You can always count on beefy smash dudes to learn something!
I believe that if you get spiked while in footstool tumble state you also can't tech, useful for characters like greninja who has a divekick
Great video. As always. Thx guys!
Thanks for this! I've been wanting to main pit/dark pit, and I feel like footstool combos would be useful for them.
footstools for recovery is going to be the new meta for this game
I died @ "It will cost the Yoshi his life." because it sounded like an Animal Planet documentary.
Wow. A thumbnail where a goddess is using her servant as a footstool. What an original concept.
Great video guys, very informal
Pshh no one needs any of this they can just press buttons until they get a footstool kill and play it off like they did it on purpose
The most true thing ever said about smash bros...
Your videos are awesome guys. Keep it up.
Great video, Someone found a glitch with Sonic when he gets phantom footstool. When Sonic up-b and can't grab the ledge a phantom footstool can reset his up-b making Sonic can up-b 2 or 3 times every time he gets phantom footstool.
DK's cargo throw stage spike to footstool is my favorite
OMG! I have so much trouble with footstooling! (probably cuz' I use tap jump) Thanks for this. You're such a big help. +BeefySmashDoods
Had no idea about the Phantom Footstool...I've always thought I miscounted my jumps when it happened.
You should have shown the full Lucas 0-death footstool combo, as it's probably the most brutal footstool combo in the whole game.
Was the zero-to-death Z-drop footstool infinites (villager tree-piece and Pac-man key) outside the scope of the combos section and this video?
Have you made a video on infinites yet?
4:44 oh my god!!! I can't believe... Somebody that actually uses airdoges when the oponent is trying to gimp him
I was having an argument with one of my friends about if Ikes sacred combo was true. I'm sending this video to him now.
Cloud's single hit of his cross slash into footstool
>sees Palutena
>CLICK
Thanks for this I will definitely practice
Duck hunt can help people recover by getting phantom footstooled.
That Doc combo is SUPER hard to pull off...I've been trying to do it since I saw TRC's video for it.
I actually do this quite a bit and they ask me is the footstool was intentional. I usually say no or feel bad for them because footstools are dumb. But it was actually planned because I'm evil

*I bet Pit is having a GOOD Time in that thumbnail*
Im glad my mans TheRealCarterer made it here
Wow, I think I just did my first phantom footstool today, I think.
+Meester Tweester The first one you noticed, yep. All thanks to good 'ol Beefy Smash Dudes
Cap'n K I've seen a gif of one before, but I don't remember doing one. Footstools are almost accidental for me, since they're so hard to land and there are better options.
I know that feel
"this can cost a yoshi his life" i swear this should be on animal planet😂😂😂 nice narrators voice
Shoutouts to me for creating the phantom footstool term? Or did someone else come up with the same term?
The thumbnail
F*cking savage :v
Footstools seem pretty funny and useful though. Too bad I'm not good enough to actually perform any when it matters. :/
just spam jump
***** Oh. Seems simple enough.
Thank you cFive, you should stay beefy too
This just gave me an idea for a mii swordfighter combo that uses a footstool, though you'd need to start with a footstool in the air. It's mostly going to be raw damage, but can kill. What I'm thinking of is footstool to double Uair. I don't remember if this can kill confirm, though I think it's very likely to on most characters. Thank you I need to see this video because I want to footstool my opponents when they get to the ledge
One thing you didn't mention from footstooling is that Mewtwo could use it to carry his opponent better in his nair as well as using it to combo into double jump cancel down b.
