Subaru Performance Transmission Explained

  • There are so many changes to the previous-generation WRX Lineartronic CVT that is has been renamed the Subaru Performance Transmission. With the high-torque CVT from the Subaru Ascent as a starting point, Subaru engineers redesigned this automatic for quicker and crisper response.
The continuously variable transmission (CVT) provides a choice for consumers who want a sports sedan with the convenience of an automatic transmission.

The Subaru Performance Transmission comes standard on the 2022 Subaru WRX GT and is available on the Base, Premium & Limited trims.
    Wide Ratio Spread
The SPT has a considerably wider spread of ratios between first and top "gears" than the 6-speed manual in the WRX. This delivers strong off-the-line acceleration along with low-rpm highway cruising.
    Smooth Acceleration
Under normal driving conditions, the Subaru Performance Transmission provides smooth and virtually stepless acceleration due to its wide range of ratios. During heavy acceleration, the Subaru Performance Transmission provides stepped shifting, similar to an 8-speed automatic transmission.
    Paddle Shift Control
The Subaru Performance Transmission can be operated manually by using the steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. With the shift lever in "Drive", pulling one of the paddle shifter will temporarily activate Manual mode. The driver can choose to shift manually, but the transmission will default to Drive as soon as it senses no further driver input.
    Starting Out In Manual Mode
In Manual mode, the Subaru Performance Transmission can start from a complete stop in second gear, which can help reduce wheelspin on slippery surfaces.
    Quicker Shifts
Subaru engineers redesigned this automatic for quicker and crisper response. Depending on the SI-DRIVE Mode, upshifts are up to 30% faster and downshifts 50% faster.
    SI-DRIVE
In addition to varying engine response, different SI-DRIVE modes also affect transmission performance. Each mode provides a major difference in the overall driving experience.
    Shorter Overall Gearing
From the initial transmission gearing when you first start out, through overdrive ratios for 5th through 8th gears, the Subaru Performance Transmission has taller gearing. While that would normally lead to lower engine RPM for any given vehicle speed, the final drive ratios have been changed from 3.90:1 in the 4th generation WRX, to 4.44:1 in the 5th generation. This "shorter" overall gearing provides WRX with strong off-the-line performance.
    Downshift Throttle Blipping
In Sport, Sport Sharp or Individual Modes, the transmission features throttle blipping. When downshifting to a lower 'gear', the transmission normally forces the engine to rev higher. Throttle blipping matches the speed of the engine to the speed of the transmission before the actual shift occurs. That means smoother downshifts, quicker response and a more engaging driving experience.

Wow being able to change the power bias from front to rear wheels is awesome. How much power I can be sent to the rear wheel?

Subaru hasn't given the specs on change in power bias between different modes. We do know that it changes, just not the exact ratio of front/rear.

Hi, you mentioned gears but isn’t this a CVT?

    Great video.
Is there a way to essentially set the vehicle to perform like an automatic? Or is there still a learning curve necessary to learn to drive it manually in order to operate the car.

      Performance transmission is automatic/manual
