My Rebel 500 manual says to adjust the tension with the bike on the side stand FYI. It’ll be a lot different if you have the rear wheel off the ground.
Thank you so much Arches Mechanic! You saved me a visit to my dealer and now have 100 dollars in my pocket! The other 100 is going to a stand :D
You did it with out the satand?
@@horacioeprieto7941Yes, you adjust the chain while on the side stand
You should probably mention to check wheel/tire clearance as well once the locknuts are back on and tight. Those position indicators on the fork are not that accurate since the large silver bracket holding the axle has a lot of free play in it, like Mr. Plow said below.
Brilliant, thank you! That's how you do a how to video!
Short, sweet, and to the point. Thank you so much!!!
Best video by far!!! All the other ones over complicate the task
as a noob motorcycle owner, this helps a lot, thanks man!!!
thanks. last thing i need is rolling on the highway. biggest help
Problem is that the right-side position indicator moves all over the place when the axle nut is loose so you have very low accuracy when centering the wheel.
You could leave the axle nut just loose enough to hold the indicator in place.
Thanks for the video, but doesn’t the bike have to be on the side stand with weight on the back wheel to get your proper tension adjustment
That’s a good question. I’m not exactly sure. I think you could make adjustments afterwards if you had to. Mine didn’t seem to tighten up much after it was dropped.
Thanks for the video. Man did that clump of grass bug me! What stand do you use?
Viper something. Can’t remember now
buddy this is the good videos that I like to watch honestly really educative, Im doing few works on my rebel and this helps to much !!!!!
Special thanks sir. Your video is very useful for me as a new member.
Thanks for the video man! Helps me out every time I need a refresher ☺️
Great vid, is it safe to say there’s no need to use a torque wrench?
You should. I just don’t know the torque specs and I’m good at calculating torque by feel
I just found your channel and subscribed. Good content.
Hey there! first off thanks for the video! Second, mind if I ask what kind of stand do you use for this?
It was a viper I got off Amazon and modified.
@@ArchesMechanic What modifications were needed on the Viper stand?
So is chain play measured by only pushing up? Or by pushing up, then down?
Thanks, Dude!
Liking the white wall tires
Excellent video. Thanks a lot!
Nice. Thanks!
Great tutorial
I'd just like to add, you don't have to take the two lock nuts completely off.
Nice informative video.
Does the poddock stand scratch the underside of the Rebel 500 muffler?
Sam Fadlallah I believe it did but as I couldn’t see under there I wasn’t too worried
Can you post a link for the lift with the type of attachments I would need on the lift to use on the 500 rebel please ? I believe the L shaped ones are the right ones right ?
I made my own
The right side of mine won’t tighten any more but the left side is very easy to move and the chain is still very loose. Do you have any tips? Is it fine to just tighten on the left?
Make sure they’re even. Use the bolts at the back to walk it in/out. You may need to replace the chain. It could have stretched
Really helpful Thanks 🤙
Which stand did you use to lift the motorcycle off the floor?
Ahmad Abboud just search motorcycle lift and they will pop up to order online
@@ArchesMechanic doesn't answer which one you use...??? there are hundreds online and not all will work with a 300/500 Rebel.
Thanks
The nut opposite of the axel nut, is that significant? Does that need to be move / tighten loosened?
No. It can stay where it’s at
mine moves when i try loosening the right one... is that bad
Love to know what make the axle stand is?
What type / brand of stand is best for the Rebel 300/500?
I liked the viper ones I had but I went with the cheapest option. Better to spend a few extra bucks and get one that you done have to modify
@@ArchesMechanic Thanks! Great video! 😊
A crescent wrench has no business here. Did you torque the nuts down?
Andrea Capper that I did off camera. Still learning how to make a proper video
thank bro!!!!!!!
I cannot get the nut loose on the right side to the point now it’s stripped and I don’t know what to do
I’ve grips
Vice grips
I’ll give it a shot thank you
The Allen slot on the opposite side of my axle nut keeps spinning. Am I doing something wrong or do I just need a large Allen key to tighten it?
Use an Allen to hold it in place
@@ArchesMechanicgot it. You’re awesome with these replies even after a long time since you posted the video. Thanks man
@@nicsmiley2265 thank you
How often should we adjust the chain?
Once a year check it.
@@ArchesMechanic just cleaned and adjusted my chain for the first time with the help of your video. Super helpful and it was really easy! Thanks!
I don't have a stand for it. What do I do.
You can lean the bike onto the stand with the back wheel off the ground and prop it up with wood or something
The kickstand
Did look a little tight...
Can you do a tutorial on swapping/draining the radiator coolant? Thanks
KentwoodWarrior sorry. Sold the bike
Arches Mechanic ah, how come?
KentwoodWarrior moving. Can’t take it with me. Making a video about it soon
use a proper wrench.. you gonna kill those bolts in 6 months.
I disagree. It seems that you misunderstand what slack means. Your chain looks way too tight.
1 inch of freeplay will look pretty tight. How can you be so certain he is incorrect without measuring tape?
You mentioned 1-1.5 inches of free play. 1-1.5 inches from where? Where do I start the measurements? Sorry... I’m new to all of this
Sparta Gomez from top to bottom. Lift the chain up and measure from up to down. That is the free play that’s in it
This is not the right way to- the rear wheel is of the ground when checking -fail
Those lock nuts are soft as.
Proper would be using the correct size wrenches and a torque wrench. This is horrible.
I have a 300 do you happen to know the axle nut size so I can get proper size tools?
@@1985kehc th-cam.com/video/isf0iPEEvKQ/w-d-xo.htmlsi=w2gMSM9xeCIzbwdO
@@1985kehc Find the SLIGHT_ youtube channel, he has a proper chain adjustment video that has all the proper tools and torque specs identified. 24mm axle nut(65ft lbs) , 17mm lock nuts(15ft lbs) , 5mm Allen key
@@1985kehc I don't know why my replies to you keep getting deleted, if it's the channel owner or TH-cam? There's another TH-cam channel called SLIGHT_ that provides all the wrench sizes and details to do it properly.
Awesome video. Any plans on changing your headlight or tail lights to LED? Or how to remove the forks?
I hate to tell ya but I sold this bike almost 2 years ago. Sorry 😞
@@ArchesMechanic Why did you sell it ?
@@cosminpopescu92 got a Mustang instead. Mid life crisis things 😂
