  • Controversial opinion... replace the chain without replacing the sprockets? It is always best, if you are not sure, to replace them. Yet it is not required. (as long as there is no abnormal wear) Please note: this is not recommended twice. The benefits of chain maintenance is proven to extend the life of the chain and sprockets.

    Very helpful! I am going to have to replace my Rebel chain because of tight links. It's under a year old and just over 2k miles. Honda and my local dealer rejected the warranty claim because chains are not covered. I would suggest that with this low mileage and the age of the bike, they should have helped out. But this is where we see how the warranty is mostly useless in these situations. I will replace the chain but not the sprockets.

      Be sure to Inspect the sprockets though. Just because mine were good doesn’t mean your will be.

      @@SLIGHT_ I cleaned and re-greased (I tend to use Maxima 74920 Chain Wax) after about 350 miles the first time. I added grease as soon as I got home from the dealer because, apparently, Honda don't believe in chain lube from the factory !! Then it got the 1st service at the dealership after 600 miles. I changed the tyres after about 1050 miles and cleaned the chain and re-greased as part of that process.

    Do you happen to know how the front end of the chain guard comes off? I have removed the rear bolt a couple of times and tend to tie the chain guard up and out of the way, but I have yet to be able to release the front so I can remove it entirely. It looks to be one of those plastic push clips?

    Quick question is it a 120 link or 112? And does that matter?

    • @SLIGHT_
      @SLIGHT_  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You’ll need 112… yet if it has more you’ll just need to take off a few links (the extra) At times it’s cheaper to get the 120 kit. As long as it’s a 520… it will work.

      @SLIGHT_  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Mine has 61,000kms on the original set. I am about to do the chain for the second time now and will be replacing the sprockets at this time. Note: they have wear on them now, yet even if they didn't it is always best to replace the sprockets the second chain no matter what.

    what if you lose count of adjustments on each side? is there a way to get it even on both sides after the rotations are way off when adjusting chain tension?

    • @SLIGHT_
      @SLIGHT_  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Absolutely, there are many options… you can use a chain alignment tool (clamp and bar basically) or spinning the tire and following the chain reading. The sprocket should be in the middle of the chain, if it’s to the side… adjust until it gets back in alignment.
