  • In this episode of Raw Craft, Anthony Bourdain heads to the heart of Greenpoint, Brooklyn to meet with improvisational furniture maker, Mats Christeen. A former hockey player, turned model and owner of his small shop in Brooklyn - Foundry Wood, Mats brings a unique eye to each of his pieces. Using reclaimed wood and iron parts Mats is able to breathe new life into old materials he finds around New York City. Each piece of furniture is carefully constructed and uniquely original. Episode directed by filmmaker Rob Meyer. Music by Tim O'Keefe & Andy Rourke.

Wasn't really convinced by the first 8 minutes. Like, selfmade artist, from an hockey player ? Got nothing against hockey but a selfmade artist always rings to my ear like someone made the wrong choice somewhere and said it was "art"... But damn. That table at 8:45 ? I'd buy it, for sure. Looks pro, durable, unique as it gets, fonctional. Probably expensive but damn good looking, this guy did the right choice building furniture !

Really hope I'm wording this in a non-dickish way. This is the last episode i watched and I'm glad it wasn't the first or i probably wouldn't have been so engaged in the rest of the series.
The rest of the makers have spent years dedicating themselves entirely. Suffering for their art and in the
process developing, then perfecting a skill.
And while I'm happy as hell for this guy; that he gets to enjoy making a living doing what he
loves, and making some pretty neat looking things if i may say so, i
still can't help but think he sorta jumped the line without putting in
the work. As a long time carpenter turned metalworker I think it's fairly evident: in the work space and his technique.
Just using an angle grinder with a cut off wheel and the guard removed is insanity and i would like to think that no one with any kind of experience in the fabrication world would do that.
But again, not trying to throw shade on this guy, he's going for it and that counts for a lot. Especially in Brooklyn; where no one rides for free.

I see your point, Taylor, but without time constraints, the shows are meatier, to the point. 8-10-12 minutes, whatever, the right length is determined by the quality of the content and just plain intuitive, subjective scripting and editing . Elizabeth Brimm and Bob Kramer, both killer shows, are TRT 12:00+. Borough Furnace, one of the finest, is just six minutes, which is just right. Format flexibility is a great creative tool.

You do realize how stupid you sound saying there's only white males being featured when out of 10 episodes, 4 of them are women... There is a "lack of color" I guess, but I doubt they're purposely refusing to feature people of color. Get over yourself, this was probably the worst episode exactly because they went and did it about a craft that is neither dying nor did they actually show anything be made, which is what would happen if they just start featuring everyone you can find just to have diversity on the show. I'm sure I can find several millions POC that paint, would any of them make for an interesting episode? I'd say chances are 0 in a million.
