  • In early summer of 2021, Reading & Northern 425 was yet again tasked with excursion service. The high-stepping pacific, the current loudest steam locomotive in the United States, was again put to the test, making easy work of her tasks. The R&N 425 is well known for her stylish blue paint, deafening stack talk, and wide variety of whistles, which is showcased in this video. The first part of this video covers the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway, an eight-mile scenic ride originating in Jim Thorpe and traveling along the Lehigh River. The second part of this videos contains the early-morning ferry move of 425 from Jim Thorpe to Tamaqua, where the locomotive reached upwards of 30+ MPH. The final section of this video covers the first public steam excursions on the Reading Line since 2019, during this year's Tamaqua Summerfest. The 4-6-2 lead one excursion from Tamaqua to New Ringgold and two excursions from Tamaqua to the High bridge, with 425 leading both directions on the last trip of the day. The whistles heard in this video are a Pennsylvania Railroad 3 Chime and a Nathan 3 Chime.
    Reading & Northern #425 is a 4-6-2 Pacific Type Steam Locomotive Built by the Baldwin Locomotive works in 1928 for the Gulf, Mobile & Northern Railroad. She is the first of two G-1 Type locomotives for the GM&N (425 and later scrapped 426). When the locomotives went to the GM&O, they became 580 (425), and 582 (426). 425 traveled to many other railroads, such as the Louisiana & Eastern, Valley Forge Scenic Railway, Wilmington & Western, and the Blue Mountain & Reading where she ran alongside 2102. Now, the BM&R is the RBM&N, or R&N for short, which acquired many miles of track when Conrail went out of business. In 1992, 425 was painted in her famous Blue Paint Scheme in honor of the Reading Bluebird. From 1996 to 2007 the famous locomotive sat dormant. In 2008, she returned to regular passenger service. In 2011 425 was given roller bearings by the Strasburg Railroad, and in 2015, painted to her current blue, a GM&N "Road of Service" inspired paint scheme, becoming the Pennsylvania resident we know today.

    Nice one, Joe! I especially liked the opening shots in Jim Thorpe! And man they sure were moving at the rock cut at 128. I need to go back and reshoot that again in the sun this time!

    That PRR 3 chime sounded really good on 425! It almost sounded a bit like the Crosby 3 chime that TVRM 610 used to wear. At video clip 1:15, if I close my eyes and listen to the whistle on 425, l swear that I’m hearing TVRM 610.

    • @TrainChamber

      It does sound nice. When i first heard it, I didnt think it was a PRR

    Very nice video. I wish that the passenger cars are freshly painted as it would make the entire train look real sharp to complement the nicely painted steam engine….

    • @TrainChamber
      @TrainChamber  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You could either walk from CP Coal, or follow the trail over the truss bridge, then follow a smaller trail down below to river level. I was standing in the river for the shot, so pack accordingly.
