Inspired by this game I just watched The Hunt for Red October again. Saw it as a kid last time so didnt realize, but Sean Connery's russian pronunciation at the beginning was absolutely hilarious. About as good as Brad Pitts italian in Inglourious Basterds.
Griviues and I did our best to mimic it in the same way that Sean Connery and Sam Neill did in the movie. Actually took more effort than you may expect to not correct the mistakes. :)
Great points about the MHD drive, Magz. In addition, much like any nuclear-powered submarine, the reactor pumps are still capable of being heard (and in the film, the Red October had a cryogenic plant to supercool the drive elements as well, that's gotta be noisy). Interestingly enough, the book has the "caterpillar drive" as a ducted impeller/turbine system that just happens to run the full length of the boat, quieting the boat not unlike that of the pump-jets that the Seawolf and Virginia SSNs are driven by. So not too outlandish in that case.
They should consider enhancing the ship sinking model by having the aircraft slide off the deck and turrets pop out of their mounts when vessels are inverted.

Recently re-read "THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER" and "RED STORM RISING". Both, great books written by Tom Clancy (rest in peace). Both stories figure heavily in this game.
14:50 They are wire guided, though it's for more for countering counter measures. Usually though, it's more of guess work than anything as you don't have a camera but instead a basic plot to look at and how fast your plotman can calculate a new course for your target
Linear induction pump basically. They used those in the sodium cooled liquid metal fast breeder reactors. You pass a current through the fluid and, being in the presence of a magnetic field, the water that is carrying the current accelerates like the wires in a motor's armature.
Love the vids Magz. Some points, however: The Red October indeed is a different sub from the Typhoon in terms of game stats. Slightly better in a few stats including silencing, even on conventional power. Also, most subs can carry many more torps than a 688. It is an error if the Red October does not have its full complement. Subs like the Oscar II, Akula, Yasen, Seawolf, Virginia, Astute, Sierra I, Ohio, Typhoon SSGN, etc. all have more torps in the game [mod] than the 688s. Also the small warhead on the USET-80 was a KFG balancing factor in favour of the player, it actually has a comparable warhead to the Mk48 [300kg]. All warheads are going to be balanced in the mod to proper kg equivalent to TNT like they should be. It should not be wire guided, however.
"It is an error if the Red October does not have its full complement" - Pretty sure I mentioned something along these lines in the video and I don't think I ever said that submarines can only hold the same amount as the 688 just that the RO does when it should actually have close to 60 weapons available not counting the VLS tubes. "USET-80 was a KFG balancing factor in favour of the player, it actually has a comparable warhead to the Mk48 [300kg]" - I can sink all but the capital ships shown in this video with a single MK.48 and have done so in all of my videos, it takes a minimum of two USET-80's again as you can see in this video. They may have the same size warhead but they are most certainly not comparable in regards to performance. If balancing it planned. . . well that's Ok providing that the two torpedoes perform roughly the same in real life, if they don't they should not be made equal at least not on elite difficulty settings which should be as close to realistic as possible.
I may have misheard you on the first one there Magz, sorry on that. In the game currently the USET is indeed weaker than the Mk48, it has "300" as its warhead, when it should have something like "550" like the Mk48 - they both have IRL the same size warhead and same explosive. This will be balanced in the next mod patch with all weapons using kg equivalent to TNT like they should have. IRL the USET was a great torpedo, just short ranged and was not actually wire guided - that was the UGST which came in the late 90s which was basically an upgraded, faster running, longer ranged, fully wire-guided USET-80.
Ahh now that makes more sense, Yes I would like to see all that corrected. Anything that brings all the numbers closer to real life is a massive plus for me :)
that movie only "worked" bc the script said so, and the capt knew how the other sub commanders think and would act. im not an expert but in real life how would you know which capt you were fighting? the enemy may have 50 of that type of boat.
@@twig4661 they had 7 in the movie (6 irl) and knew the position of each one. They were following the red oktober from launch and fairly reliable intel as to its captain, as well as an analyst who had done a deep dive (pun not intended) into the typhoon captain’s mindset, so essentially they knew him well. The typhoon guy was looking to defect, so that‘s why he was willing to comply and didn’t immediately fire on them.
An MHD drive passes current through the water, with a magnetic field at right angles to the direction of the current, inducing a force on the water at right angles to both (basic electromagnetics). Problem is, passing a current through the water also causes electrolysis, breaking it down to hydrogen and oxygen. That, and the inability to move enough water fast enough for a decent speed, was likely why Clancy conjured up some sort of ducted pumpjet scheme described in the book.
Just watched the Hunt for Red October and I realize the font style and sound from the situation title at the beginning of your videos is straight out of the movie. Good work!
The Red October in Clancy's novel had a modified magneto hydrodynamic drive...it was a combination of the standard version and a few ducted props running down the caterpillar tubes that were magnetically operated to cut down on moving parts. So, basically a huge water pulsejet that would cause a strange rumble that sounded like a distant earthquake to passive sonar. The movie got a bit stranger with it, but hollywood.
Indeed, But the fact remains that in reality MHD's are loud, The test one I was reading about only had a 20cm thrust port mounted to a small boat and it recorded 98db in the water, To put this in prospective the Los Angeles class 688i makes 115db in the water. Adding turbines voids the point of the MHD as if you are driving turbines you no longer need the MHD to accelerate the water and adding the MHD in any form large enough to move a sub, even a small one would make that sub the loudest thing in the ocean voiding the point of having it on a Submarine. Book and movie is still fantastic of course but was more pointing out that in reality the MHD is just a plot device.
Yeah...its a definate plot device, and I always thought it seemed a bit...off. Clancy is good, but he does get a bit carried away with very sci-fi stuff in some of his stories. Not as badly as Dale Brown though....now HE gets REALLY into the "wtf physics and aerodynamics don't work that way" stories.
Oh Magz! Have you heard of the novel 'Ice Station Nautilus' by Rick Campell? It's incredibly thrilling, and strikes a perfect balance in every element of the story that kept me informed with good pacing, yet deeply engaged -- I highly suggest it!
Totally incredible game and play's to..I do appreciate everything you talk about how do thing's for this too...I do greatly appreciate all your videos too...Thank you so much for everything that you do....
That's NOT how torpedos are guided today. Despite all the rumors, torpedo operators can't actually "fly" torpedos into target with a joystick. That's what we in the industry call a "myth". Parameters like speed, course and sensor use can be updated through the wire, and sensor data can be relayed back to the mothership, but there is no live control over the planes of the torpedo.
Does the Red October version of the Typhoon come with noisemakers? Those can save you many times over in a sluggish boat like the Typhoon as long as they're used at just the right time. Also, the conning tower bug is present in the other versions of the Typhoon in this mod so happens regardless of the size of the 3D model etc, from what I've experienced in game.
That was one fantastic video mate, one of your very finest, and that's saying something considering how much I've enjoyed all your Cold Waters stuff so far! 😁👏👏👏
Indeed, It's a nightmare when she gets a bead on you, Turns the ocean into torpedo soup and then starts banging out rocket propelled depth charges into anything that so much as burbles in the water.
First of all, great video. Second, I'm relatively sure that conning towers were what ww2 era sub's had. Modern sub's have a sail. Also, the Red October had 4 more missile tubes (I think) which was the reason for its size increase over the regular Typoon.

as someone who has only dabbled in Ruskie and is better in Deutsch, what exactly was the "butchering"? What were the errors Sean Connery made specifically, as Russian is a language i hope to learn well before i kick the ol bucket
If the Oscar class is known as "The Loaf"..........then the Typhoon must be "The Bathtub". I have always wondered if say a Soviet Typhoon could knock out a carrier group with an SLBM?
I got away dove to 1000ft and drove out on ultra quiet underneath the fleet ;) Tense does not describe it ........ TWICE an alpha doubled back on me to check the rear of the fleet , once it got with 1 kyd :)
how feasible is this game in real life? cause thats damn scary that one sub could come anywhere close to wiping out a large service fleet. i know modern subs are very dangerous, but how much so?
Trust me, the modern submarine is designed to do this kind of damage to skimmer fleets. With the new design of torpedoes, being both faster and stealthier, and the stealth capabilities of subs constantly being improved, they are a real menace to surface fleets. The threat of just 3 British boats, with the confirmed presence of just one, was enough to keep the Argentinian Fleet well away from the Falklands area during the Falklands War.
maybe not for a Boomer, you would need a phenomenally skilled Captain and crew, simpyl because they are big and sluggish so weapon avoidance is so much harder and firing gives a lot of location data to your targets. But for an attack/hunter sub, yeah totally doable simply because they are fast and quiet, especially if said mass of ships is in range of a Conventional sub's operation range, as those things are super quiet compared to a Nuclear sub. Towards the end of the Cold War, a Russian Victor Class managed to get inside the USS Kitty Hawk's perimeter and to show off, surfaced in front of her. Which due to it being dark and watch crew probably not looking for a submarine right in front of them, resulted in collision. Various other collisions have occurred between Russian and Allied fleets, showing that even the comparatively nosier ruskies can most certainly sneak up and surprise a whole fleet. Just as well we havent had to trade blows cos those Russians would certainly deal some damage, especially if they ever got their Shvkal torps into some form of mass production then they would be some serious force multipliers on the naval stage, some much so that they might force even the USN to keep its surface ships on a defensive role and try to be aggressive with subs alone.
In reality a boomer would just bring it's depth to 200 feet and launch ASM's at the whole fleet from it's VLS tubes killing everything faster than it could react. I would have done the same but the mission limits you to only 4 ASM's and gives you no access to the typhoons VLS.
The reason your torps missed the Kiev is you set the arm point way to close. As a rule of thum b it should be about 1/2 distance. sop if you loose the wire you have armed torps having a chance rather than arming after the target. Also you only need active sonar torps in high background noise the target doesn't matter. Even a quiet sub will go flank and be traceable by a passive torp. For thwe record the Typhoon ISN'T an AKULA class. The Akulka was a hunter killer not an SSBN.
The NATO reporting name was typhoon but the real Russian name was akula. The sub you are thinking of has a NATO reporting name akula and is an attack sub
Have seen 52 seconds of the video so far. The pork-chops are baking. Dropped the fries and used baked beans from a can. Added some meat sausages and they are all in the oven at the moment. In about 10 minutes I'll add two eggs on top of the pork-chops.
Man they strapped those planes and helicopters down tight they didnt budge with 4 explosions and stayed even while sinking. Would of been cool to see them slide off lol gg
Magz ive bine watching all of your cold waters eppisodes to the end and realy enjoy them and a thought came to my mind about recomending a show i watched a long time ago. Rhis show is about ships and subs ( Arpeiggo of blue steel) its one of my favorite animes and i thought you might enjoy it.
To be clear, I didn't mind the concept, and the animations where beautiful. I wouldn't actually mind seeing an anime done in that art style but following an actual battleship crew even if the battles where not historical. I feel much the same way about GuP, Love the battles and the art style but am less fond of the "everyone must be a teen girl in a miniskirt school uniform". I could see me quite liking an anime where the tank or ship crew was just people in some kind of arena battle without the school girl fan service.
MagzTV There's an anime about submarines you mighta heard of it I'll see if I can find the name Nope rip all I can find is Arpeggio of Bue Steel and stuff
why would the Russians use their air craft carriers to confront the submarines directly ? a carrier is a stand off platform to launch air craft. The helicopters and jets do the fighting.
Nope there never was a situation like this because in Cold War torpedoes were never fired and during ww2 they were unguided and shot on the surface only
as someone who watched "Hunt for Red October" i can both admire and laugh at the accuracy to the beginning of the movie.
That "Hymn to Red October" (at 1:15) never fails to give me chills when listening to it, it is just so masterfully composed.
Same.

Was hilarious how the Forgers and Helixes stayed in place as the Kiev went under, especially when she was pointing straight up!
Saw The Hunt for Red October references, clicked video to see video as gripping as the movie The Hunt for Red October.

that is true though not really what a Typhoon is designed for :P
Spasicva comrade. Lol that was fun
The sub you are thinking of has a NATO reporting name akula and is an attack sub
are the damage modules good enough to target specific parts of vessels?
not target, but if you hit them in the sonar, it takes it out, or the engine room, etc. And multiple hits to a side will make a ship list, etc.
thats what i meant
Nice battle! It's rare to see you getting hit. Maybe you should try this more often 😉
Macaroni, Sriracha sauce, and cold waters. Couldn't be better.
Crazy Ivan!
Hats off people, nice captain. But the honchos at the pentagon should be paying close attention to this.
Isn't using towed-sonar still giving out your general location to anyone with ears out there?
Nope, the towed array sonar is passive but very sensitive sensor
(Play epic mod for more realism in that part like 3d models)
I love the typhoons :)
27:55 How???
that was one nice water grave :P
God damn the typhoon class is DUMMY thicc
Thank god, my prayers have been answered.
I really loved the intro but next time can you and Griviues (especially Griviues) speak up a bit because I could almost not hear you two.
The volumes are edited in post to get them as close as possible to the same volumes vs ambient sound from the movie.
Okay good to know, it was just that on my end it was really hard (next to impossible) to hear what Griviues was saying.
more of that pls
awesome intro
"What are these doors?"
42 minutes!?
I better prep some food, 'cause this is gonna be good. * rubs hands together *
Oven-baked pork-chops with fries & mayo on the side.
Have seen 52 seconds of the video so far.
The pork-chops are baking.
Dropped the fries and used baked beans from a can.
Added some meat sausages and they are all in the oven at the moment.
In about 10 minutes I'll add two eggs on top of the pork-chops.
21 minutes in.
And I'm stuffed.
Relaxing the belly, while watching the video and listening to the smooth voice of Magz.
this was one tense battle... too bad you couldn't get the music from the movie lol
Great ...... Edge of the seat stuff!!!! :)
What was the Kiev shooting at you?
omg that Boris the Blade accent
While playing this all I'd want to hear in the background is the opening Russian song in the beginning of Hunt for Red October.
I haven't watched this movie in about a month. It's really time for me to fix that
Man they strapped those planes and helicopters down tight they didnt budge with 4 explosions and stayed even while sinking. Would of been cool to see them slide off lol gg
Can I buy a Boomer comic book?
Not yet, maybe I need to speak to Maddendd about one.
MagzTV looking forward to it!
28:00 Engage no-clipping conning tower mode activate!
These vids are fantastic put me to sleep in about ten minutes cheers !! No offence intended 👍
Unless it’s Captain Tupelov in the Konevalov hunting you, it’s not the real Hunt for Red October😊.
I've seen it, It was. . . .not exactly to my taste but I have seen far worse. School girl battleships, enough said.
MagzTV thanks for responding and ik its not the best but as you said there are worce
MagzTV There's an anime about submarines you mighta heard of it I'll see if I can find the name
Nope rip all I can find is Arpeggio of Bue Steel and stuff
"Teen girls in a miniskirt school uniform."
>Mfw this is too accurate.
why would the Russians use their air craft carriers to confront the submarines directly ? a carrier is a stand off platform to launch air craft. The helicopters and jets do the fighting.
I wonder if a submarine ever accidentally blown up a whale?
Nope there never was a situation like this because in Cold War torpedoes were never fired and during ww2 they were unguided and shot on the surface only
14:30 It's not I think it's a sonobuoy
The _Soviet Navy_ has REALLY _"gone to the dogs."_
😝😝😝😝
I think we found our buckaroo
15:00 or a passive sonobouy
