He deserves every bit of it! I'm the same age as Stevie Wonder, I grew up with him and his great music since we were 12. No one could do what he could do, always innovating and out in front. Some of you younger folks might not know that Stevie was born blind, making his accomplishments even more fantastic! Along comes Jacob who picks up where Stevie left off, which is saying a LOT! It takes sheer brilliance to redo a classic old hit and make it even better! go Jacob, we love you!

I think the thing with Jacob is that he makes music with real emotions and that aren't obnoxious, most prodigies are insanely talented and skilled, but can never make music that is relatable to the "average" person because they don't allow themselves to explore spaces that seem "too simple" or somewhat stupid to them. Jacob isn't afraid of learning and improving through doing something he's never done before and just pouring his feelings onto a song, i mean, listen to "the sun is in your eyes", he recorded that on his iphone with just a guitar and his voice and it still sounds amazing, with somewhat complex playing and amazing lyrics, but it's also very easy to listen and is very relatable

2020. Only discovered Jacob a few months ago. I've had to wire my jaw shut whilst listening to his arrangements. I read with interest here the opposing views of 'genius' and 'too busy', and also the lack of original writing. All very valid points, for now.
However, in my 50 years listening to music I've seen many artists grow across their careers to a point where they achieve this level of technical ability.....afters literally decades of experience.
I would just like to remind everyone that this gentleman was producing music to this standard when he was just 19...
    19.
Just imagine what is to come.

Of course comrade, he does indeed have a full catalogue of his own music, which is brilliant. But most criticise him for 'messing' with other people's work......
To me, having your work taken and reinterpreted so wonderfully should be considered s tremendous compliment. It's a statement that what you created was so good it had huge untapped potential for further creativity.
I am aware that many of the critics here appear to have a distinctly 'armchair' air about them...... :-)))

6 years later, an observation: the number of people who complain that his arrangements are "too busy" or "too much" are dwindling. Like any consummate genius whose work shatters all existing precedent, there is initial backlash because people aren't ready for one individual to catapult a discipline so far forward so quickly. But eventually as he continues to produce, people begin to accept it because all of a sudden he has made it real and possible. +Hoimar Kapenze What an odd thing to say. Performing extremely well? Faint praise! He not only has oodles of soul, grooves, sings perfectly in tune, arranged all that with some dazzlingly close harmonies and surprising modulations in there, plays a dozen instruments, but - oh yeah - he just invented a whole new art form! I know people have been overdubbing for a while, but this takes it to an insane level, even for youtube.
Here is a list of less talented people whose feet you could put back on the ground before his: Justin Bieber. Kylie Minogue. Robbie Williams. Sting. The Rolling Stones (yes, I said it). Because it's not sugar coated, because it has some complexity, this man's music won't probably reach the mass audience they have - so if a pedestal helps him, give him a pedestal.

The trouble that I have with u 'superlative people' is that u tend 2 judge everything nice u find on the net as double-mega-giga-cool, or, the other way round, as extremely bad. This is childish. Look at the alias you gave urself 2 register: 'jazzwonderboy'. M close 2 burst into laughter.
Can u please keep grounded? This boy is great in what he does. But he he is no 'wonderboy', stupid. He is a simple human. There are no wonders. We are not living in a comic world.
I think the trouble is that too many ppl using the internet are drunk or on drugs while surfing so their mind gets too excited.
So give this guy the chance 2 just do his thing without any hype. He deserves his audience 2 b serious, not overemphasized.

+Hoimar Kapenze You're free to judge Collier as merely OK, while we lesser mortals sit in awe. Of course superlatives should not be over used but they're in the vocabularly of all languages for a reason, and Collier is in MY opinion just such an example, even if he isn't on your list of favourites.

He's a real genius, he transcends styles, metric and roles in music, he has imagination and passion, he jokes like a kid with notes, rhythm and harmonies, he is asymmetrical, multi-instrumentalist… For me he's the number one of our age. I saw his performance at the Vienna Jazz Festival in 2016 and he was a revolution. I particularly love his tune "Don't You Know" played with Snarky Puppy and a big band. And I think the best is yet to come.

This guy is the true definition of the word genius. AND he was 19 at the time. What a total freak! Unbelievable.

People have commented about the genius of this 19 year old (at the time ).
The thing that I find stunning, is the several LAYERS of genius that this video reveals.
There is the OBVIOUS presentation that the musical genius presents, but the visual presentation is pure genius as well. Further, for a NINETEEN year old to possess the SOCIAL savvy and accompanying courage to step out and even MAKE this presentation...
    Genius indeed.

I don't care how it was created, but ideas are clearly presented. The ideas are absolutely stunning. Harmony flights are fantastic, just mind blowing. Kaleidoscopic scales wrap familiar melodies beyond imagination. Wow..

His harmony and transitions. Everytime I hear it, it's like he's telling me to just be my best self. There's no such thing as a wrong note in a chord. As long as it is striving for consiquence. Working towards resolve. Maybe for moments, finding it. It's okay you are, where you're at. This chord might sound ugly now, but it won't, when it finds it's place to settle down.

You know, it's really amazing how consistent and even predictable many areas of life are. After watching this killer presentation by this extremely talented youngster, I looked to see the pathetic number of dislikes among the nearly ten thousand number of likes. No matter what, there will always be jealousy, there will always be haters. Most of these aren't even legitimate in their feelings and assessments. It's simply a matter of reflexive opposition by envious, losers in misery.... And we all know what misery loves.... Wonderful job, Jacob.

Too many children and adolescents come to these blogs and lay down their pathological negativity. You can tell they're too green to really appreciate artistry.

The singing is obviously amazing, and the harmonies, but the instrumentation is also fantastic during the latin break down in the middle. Such layers of rhythm!
