Really when you hear the recorded version you’re like there is no way Tori actually did this and it’s a digital construction. I think Jacob had this recording as proof that it was real. There is some pitch correction but in total it’s very impressive. Pushing the boundaries of vocals. Absolutely stunning.
The fact that she can parrot back his runs, perfectly, after ONE LISTEN, is even more impressive than Jacob coming up with these runs. It is absolutely INSANE what she is able to do vocally. Mindblowing.

Jacob is the most talented composer and producer of our time. He's a talented vocalist himself. But Tori is the most talented female vocalist of our time. She can do everything. It's just better that both of them are amazing people and have character as well.

People who have not worked with singers in the studio won't understand how much skill and empathy it takes to get the vocalist to perform like that. We all know that Jacob is a brilliant composer and musician, but this shows what a hell of a producer he is. Incredible.

I love how Jacob picked up on Tori's method - when she mentioned how she visualizes "pillars" - and then at 6:35 used her imagery to guide her. Such a sensible, lucid music producer 🎯

There's levels to this.
Not just a masterclass on talent but also how kind artists should be to each other. He communicates what he wants with no ego at all.

The run at 3:13 is my favourite of the whole song, and Tori just locks in immediately to the tone, and the immense admiration Jacob has for her to be able to execute this crazy run. And he even starts by saying “maybe we shouldn’t do all my runs” and she’s like NO I love it!!
I went to school for music. I like to think that I have more than a solid grasp of both music theory and vocal pedagogy. Yet, my brain is just completely overloaded by this video. The sheer talent and skill is beyond words

Come to find out, Mastermind Jacob carefully planned the whole thing and coached her through it! Great job, Tori! this is the highest level of making music: jacob thinking the most complicated yet meaningful runs, and was able to demonstrate them flawlessly right away, and tori understanding it and instantly able to sing them. not to mention the excitement that have for challenging and the joy they have when they nailed them. Such an enjoyable video, thank you Jacob.
What’s also funny about this is that even her outtakes/practice clips are cooking up all the cover videos 😂 (which I’ve thoroughly enjoyed and shared!)
Her agility and bright tone together is just unmatched for this kind of thing. And the final version placements and overall emotion knock it out of the park. No one’s come close to it yet so I think yall caught lightning in a bottle with this one.
I’ve watched some covers and a lot seem to not do it the way Tori does it: they lowkey do a cop out version on some runs which would be considered easier. I’m waiting for someone to do it just like her with more power.

I love watching this. It's so incredible. They are both so, so good.
There are so many artists that are WAY too popular and successful for their level of ability and artistry and there are actual musicians that don’t get near the amount of recognition they deserve. These two are actually genuinely talented and visionary musicians in the popular music landscape, and they get overshadowed by people with a tiny drop of the talent they have. It’s mind boggling to me how our society works sometimes. It’s so backwards. As someone with a master’s degree in music it is so painful to watch people think they know what music is or what it takes. These two never cease to amaze me. It’s refreshing to see Jacob actually use a lot of the chords and unique progressions at our disposal instead of the bare minimum used to make a song. That’s one of the many reasons I love his music. And he got the best person to accomplish these challenging runs.
Because the music this dude makes sounds like ass. There are people out there who don't have 5% of this dude's knowledge and technical ability, but they make music that sounds much, much better.

Jacob Collier, your voice absolutely floored me. I've listened to a lot of your music, but that was in a final production phase, with audio engineering, and I always had a hint of caution about that. But hearing this. Your range, your vocal dexterity at both ends of the spectrum. The fact that you can hold your own with Tori Kelly is mind blowing.

So much emotion! This video I think illustrates the whole point of Jacob’s collaborative process - to push boundaries, challenge people and most of all play with music. I love the final result but this is almost better, seeing how it was brought to life!

This is crazy. I wish we could have a behind the scenes to more artists in the studio. I love how Jacob can sing all the notes himself and Tori can mimick him perfectly. It reminds me of Michael Jackson beatboxing to show his drummer what he wanted him to play. I saw a video like this with Justin Bieber a while ago that was also incredible.

I totally agree with you. He has such a personality that I think he brings out the best in all that engage him. How else could he successfully invite more than 30 well known artists for an album collaboration? And I think they all love him for it - namely, just the way he is and conducts himself. I'm obsessed! I feel so lucky that Jacob Collier is around right now and we get to be a part of this magical musical journey. Tori is so unbelievably talented.
While anyone can see this as impressive, I think musicians can especially appreciate how incredibly difficult it is to do what Tori is doing. Take out her own agility first of all and then consider how talented you have to be to replicate a run like this from a technical standpoint. The fact that none of these runs follow any sense of a typical major or minor skill makes this soooooo impressive. Like holy shit…. She is unreal.
Absolutely unbelievable.. for those of you who didn't go to music school, this is called "Aural Skills" and is one of the most difficult parts of music, actually. As it combined all aspects, theory, musicianship, listening, and skill. That's why Tori asked for the chords at one point, as it helped her picture the section as a whole. Unbelievable.
Jacob’s obviously a beast. But Tori’s flexibility and ability to be a great collaborator here is incredible.
