Tesla Model Y Acceleration Boost Put To The Test

  • The Tesla Model Y Acceleration Boost upgrade became available just recently. With claims of increasing 0-60 performance by 0.5 seconds, it is a compelling option, even at $2,000.
    We have the Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD with Induction wheels and decided to test this Acceleration Boost out. I wanted to do this as fairly as possible, so we ordered the Dragy timer to get consistent results.
    We also picked out a half mile strip, of as flat of surface as we could find to test the Tesla Model Y LR AWD out with the boost.
    0-60 times were tested before and after the acceleration boost. We did 4 passes before (2 in each direction) and 5 passes with the boost (2 in each direction, then 1 on the way back).
    It's clear that the upgrade gives you exactly what they are promising. We logged all our times with the hopes that this gives you more detail on how the acceleration boost performs in the Tesla Model Y.

    Test drove a performance Y today for the first time. What a car! It is insanely fast! The coolest thing was that we took our three kids and were amazed at how much space there was in the back and how comfortable they were sitting back there. The Y also has great storage all around and crazy comfortable seats. We’re getting one!!

    I purchased the acceleration boost for my model y last weekend. I noticed the biggest difference was 0-30. Before the boost the car felt like it was holding back from a stop. Not the case after the boost. It JUMPS off the line. The car feels MUCH more sporty with the boost! No regrets with my purchase.

      Thanks for this as I think this is the key most will notice most as is the most useful when trying to get on the freeway from a light or bypassing some wacko veering out of their lane etc.. while most are all about 0-60 times, I think 0-30, and say, rolling 45-70 instances are more useful day-day.

    There are many reviews of the acc boost. This is by far the best one. You were objective,and at the same time, you tried to explain the subjective feeling. Yes, this definitely helps especially in these situations: Should I get the performance when I just want the feeling of the 0-60 ( no wheels, etc) ? If I already have the LR, is it worth it to upgrade? Thank you very much. Keep doing these outstanding comprehensive reviews!

    Really Cool, as someone who would also go for long range over performance, this is a nice way to bridge the gap. Honestly 4.8 is plenty fast for me, I don't own a Tesla yet so my current vehicle does 0-60 in like 10 seconds, shaving that time in half sounds amazing!

    Bought the acceleration boost today, after watching this video!!
    Drove it around quite a bit, did a few 0-60 launches, highway driving, "regular" driving. I can definitely say that the difference is noticeable. I'm still very much on the fence of whether or not I want to keep it though. The car was already fast enough and with this, it's just overkill imo. After the initial rush and giggles from launching, I found myself constantly being conscious of lightly tapping on the accelerator to drive at normal speeds. I would literally take a turn, and before I know it, I'd look down and im going 20 over.
    Hopefully I can determine a decision by tomorrow. Love your video!
    All the best.

    • @BeardedTeslaGuy
      @BeardedTeslaGuy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@BeardedTeslaGuy Ended up returning it :( With winter coming here in Canada, I just couldn't justify the price point to get more a thrill when launching (and potentially more speeding tickets). Something I will definitely think about further down the line but i'm happy with the car as is. Afterall, if speed was my main concern, I should have bought the model 3 instead. Let me know if you decided to keep the boost!

The performance model has amazing stats, but getting winter rubber for those 21” wheels is not easy (and expensive). It's actually faster than that. Tesla does rolling 0-60 tests on their PUP models and dead stop tests on everything else, and many users have reported acheiving as low as 3.9s with roll starts. In fact, even without the acceleration boost, I've seen people beat the boosted time getting as low as 4.2s. So it's really only 0.4s slower.

      oh! btw... looking at this quantatatively.. one thing to consider re: LR vs. PERF... the PERF you get the wheels included, whereas LR you have to select the inductions, +$2000. then the boost is +2000. So it's a $6000 difference. But even then, its a .8 second difference between 3.5 and 4.3... at $2000 per .5 seconds, then, the $6000 price tag doesn't equal the increase in speed. of course, you get brake calipers and small extras, but you get worse range and the warm weather tire restriction. Looks like value for money, LR AWD boost + inductions is the way to go for sport feel and utility.

    Seems odd that they would charge for what is simply flipping a few bits in the ECU. With petrol cars many times there are hard bits required which is why they cost money to make faster.

    • @BeardedTeslaGuy
      @BeardedTeslaGuy  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea, plenty of aftermarket tunes on ICE cars that do the same thing, simple recalibration. It’s just a simpler process with electric because it’s how much voltage it pushes through.

    • @electrified0
      @electrified0 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's the same reason any software costs money - you're not paying for the distribution, you're paying for everything else. It's not free for Tesla to provide this to you - there are costs primarily around the motors needing to be replaced under warranty and the R&D of making the motors capable of achieving that acceleration. If they provided these "for free" to everyone, that would require a higher base price and it wouldn't be free, just included. It would be cheaper for those who want it, but more expensive for those who don't. So charging is more about offering the choice of NOT having the boost for cheaper.

    At this point I don’t really look at it as a $10K difference. Now that you have the performance boost and opted for the 20” wheels it makes it closer to a $6K difference. Still cheaper but definitely creeping closer to the cost of the performance model. Might be the perfect middle ground between them.

    Having bought and returned here are my thoughts. You can definitely feel the acceleration all the way through. The pedal resistance feel stronger and less spongy. I believe the the price point is off. At 1000-1500 I’d be more inclined to keep it. Additionally I think they should have added a new button vs renaming an existing button in acceleration setting I.e. chill, standard, sport. Having this would allow me to more easily feel the difference

    So what exactly did Tesla change? Motor pulse rate modulation (PRM)? Were they holding the Y back so they could make the increase later? What is the practical application or is it simply a good feeling? I drove to and from Dayton almost totally in Autopilot (~100 miles) - love this car!!! Didn't feel the need for more speed.

    • @BeardedTeslaGuy

    I am debating putting it on ours but not having my car for now 2 weeks I forget how it even feels. I have been using their loaners for 2 full weeks at this point and it is almost crazy. I miss having mine as I have only had it 6 days before they took it back to get the alignment issues fixed. It is so funny how the salespeople and the delivery people say it all meets speck but there is no way mine would have met any approved speck. Even the guy was like ya that needs to be fixed when I finally had my appointment 15 days ago. I have had 3 loaner Model S and 2 of those where from Enterprise 1 was an old Tesla that the shop had. Hoping I get my car back today but it keeps being delayed. It was supposed to be the 30th of last month then yesterday then this morning then who knows. I kind of want it but I also have heard it will burn through tires that much faster and at 450 a tire I am not sure I want to burn through them very fast. They said that the tire is softer so it won't make as much noise so to stay away from others that are not made for Electric Vehicles as it will make a lot more noise.

    Thanks for the fun video - Unfortunate that Tesla are charging us to take maximum advantage of the hardware we already paid for. The "tuning" of an ICE car costing money doesn't really compare because you're adding materials chips, exhaust, or whatever, (as well as typically invalidating your warranty). This should be a value add from Tesla at no charge. It's the same as when I upgraded my Tesla Model S 85D to a 100D and LOST self parking because Tesla moved it into the Full Autonomy pkg. Sad. So my upgrade was also a downgrade of cameras and intelligence I already paid for. In the end I can't help but feel like this Accel Boost upgrade was always something they would offer - as if they initially throttled the car with plan to later take the restraints off to capture revenue.
