@@TomSawyer42ihis description was not good, but his point was to shallow the club on the downswing, by thinking of drawing a circle but the circle has to be drawn counter clockwise(when looking at your swing down the target line).
He is making two semi-circles. At 12:40 you can see the small circle he is making with his hands. The way to make the circle is to move your wrists in a small clockwise rotation. Then at the top he is making the "larger" circle by again dropping his arms and moving his wrists downward and releasing at impact to complete the circle.
Early wrist set does not equal open club face, weak grips and/or cupped wrist do. Setting early or late also doesn’t dictate releases. There’re great players who do both.
You need to articulate how you are "painting the circle" with your right (or left) hand more clearly. Its challenging to really grasp the concept and try to emulate it....at least it is for me.
Matt, tough concept to grasp! I will view this video again and probably several times before it sinks in. To be honest, I don’t see the circle you are painting but I’ll keep looking to find it!
This video was as clear as mud. What were you thinking here? Please dont push hack motion on people. Its a waste of money. Grab a coat hanger and it will achive the same thing hack motion will tell you. I've seen an influx of hack motion on a bunch of channels. Not sure if they gave them all away. The funnest part is they want a 1000 bucks for this thing. 😅😅
Its funny--- when you tell people to cast on purpose-- they cant actually do it and they get a full turn. The body reacts to what the hands are doing. People today are to afraid of using there hands.
Hey Matt, great content! Can you please do a video on what your hips do at the start of transition are doing and what you feel in your feet weight wise in back swing and transition? ⛳️
i worked on this exact this this weekend and had similar results..when i was trying to set the wrists i lost distance and consistency.. i started using hack motion a couple weeks ago which has helped..sometimes other subtle body changes will help as well to help get you in the correct impact position which depends on the individual but you have to play with it
As a long time skier, I could go to five different ski instructors and they would all tell me the same thing. Go to five different golf instructors and they will tell me five different things!
lol totally agree with this. From what I can tell (which you should probably take with a grain of salt) all the instructors are trying to get you to the same end point but they have wildly different theories and approaches on how to get there. It’s like reading a recipe that tells you to mix all the dry ingredients and wet ingredients separately first versus one that just dumps them all in one bowl.
I'm away to paint. Back soon. [Later] Ok, back from trying out TW Dad's paint tip = didn't work but dispensing with pre-setting the hinge did! Thanks, Matt 👍
I’m glad it’s not just me….. I think I get what you’re saying but I think that’s more down to my swing knowledge than the explanation… which is unusual as your videos are normally super easy to follow
I noticed that your wrist position metrics at address returned exactly where your wrist was at impact. I wish that you had pointed that out; it's pretty remarkable. PS where do you surf? Windansea, Blacks? My two favorite waves.
Larry San Diego Love your golf instructional content and visits to a variety of great golf courses, resorts and golf training aids. Have you done any "Direct to Consumer" hollowed golf irons like the popular Takomo or Malby Brand irons?
how did anyone ever play golf before hackmotion? /s .....perhaps you can do a follow-up video with a better explanation on the two circles you're talking about.
I'm a 4 handicap,67 years old, 5'8" in height, 160 pounds.....my swing back is about 9 o'clock....that's short but compact. My driver is 260, my 5 iron is 180 and my PW is 130......my advice to golfers is to not watch you tube golf instructions. Go to the range and earn your stripes there. Learn from your friends as you go....my advice is the same for golf lessons....it's a waste of good money and most don't know how to teach. Good luck!
don't disagree with some of what you're saying, however, you're telling folks not to watch youtube golf instruction while you're watching it yourself. you must watch for the entertainment value. good luck!
started off with the wrist cocking maneuver which I really looked forward to, then went completely into outer space. still dont know when to cock my wrists.
I value your knowledge so I’ll give this a whirl (no pun intended) even though I’m not sure how to accomplish the painting. I worry about manipulation particularly during the downswing. Everything happens faster than the conscious mind can deliver so the picture needs to live in the motor control part of the brain.
I am not getting this. Where is the circle? Where is your canvas that this circle is drawn on? I can't tell the difference between the large and small circle...
This is nonsense. His take at the beginning on wrist hinge in incorrect. No need for hack motion, there are plenty of videos online that can guide you in the right direction. His video about using a short thumb messed up my swing and took me months to figure out why.
I don't think some ppl get it, i do because of bobby jones videos, only he reversed his circle, i always called it a loop at the top , i swing with a loop like mr. S and you can lose your lag if you're fully loaded at the top as soon as your loaded you want to let the angle out. The little or big loop prevents this. From the top view it looks like a figure eight. Bobby locke had a fat figure eight and every shot was a draw he could fade it but had better distance with the draw.
@johncorman8715 the club head loops back to the inside from the top view it looks like a big figure eight. If you just go back and start the downswing you lose momentum if you loop it back inside it doesn't stop. Bobby Jones did his reverse he took in it back inside then loop over but still inside the ball- target line
Take your club head straight back then without stopping bring it back inside and you can feel the speed then when you get to the hitting area you let out the angle you saved and it snaps right through the ball to your target but you're right golf can be difficult because it's hard to put into words, I thought video would help but it really doesn't you have to feel it.
Good tips Matt! I think many of us fight crossing the line at the top of the backswing. The “larger circle” thought on the downswing is a good mental trigger. I think a side bonus to that thought is it slows down the transition and promotes a sequenced inside path delivery vs. an over-the-top move. Keep up the great content!
Draw a circle, proceeds to seemingly do no circle drawing or explain where at in the swing the circle is supposed to be or is actually being drawn. I love your channel, but this was not really clear on how to perform what you are explaining.
I think I get it, but not completely certain. Would have helped to track your right hand on a front view illustrating the circle. And the fact that the circle is clockwise... Probably a little oval 😅
One recommendation instead of worrying about where your Club head is let's get your hands down your hand line let's get you to stop being disconnected your hands taking off away from your body is creating big issues let's not worry about clubhead let's get your hands on the hand plane guarantee you will be able to make cuts through pre-qualifiers could be the game changer you need to actually get to qualifier
I am so lost. You never actually explained HOW to paint circles with your hand. Drawing little circle with your hand and then what you showed makes me even more confused
If all the people complaining would just take a club and attempt what he is doing then you would understand. I will admit though he needing to do the entire arm motion not just the wrists.
Most folk will think you’re smoking something watching this ! You haven’t explained what you want us golfers to do to STOP THIS! STOP WHAT? Then DO WHAT INSTEAD? Paint a picture???? Your analogy of painting a picture ins totally nonsensical to even the most experienced golfers. You give kundergarden examples of club face closing rapidly through impact implying this is connected with early wrist hinge. Really? Have you heard of taking the club away with just your hands and arms? Or rolling your forearms too early in the takeaway, flipping the club in the release phase / excessive rolling of the hands with excessive forearm rotation? If a golfer does early wrist hinge without body rotation then yes that is a problem but you don’t explain that issue. In fact you don’t explain any issue, you don’t even give your definition of wrist hinge. Every good golf swing has got to include an element of wrist hinge / setting of the wrists in the backswing. But it’s a blend with body pivot / body rotation. You start by a body only rotation from the core. Yes this increases the arc / radius of the backswing. By the time the club reaches first parallel there is already some setting / some amount of vertical hinging / cocking of the wrists from the 8 o’clock position. The debate is around the rate of setting of the trail wrist to reach a full set position at the top. The left wrist hing is largely complete by lead arm parallel in the backswing. The rest of the backswing is shoulder rotation with arm swing to the top. I’m assuming your circle is trying to explain the arc of the golf swing, creating a nice wide arc on the backswing like a Rory Mcilroy, well explain this. There are indeed two schools of thought, David Leadbetter who recommended early setting of the wrists at 8 o’clock and the likes of Rory who has a massive shoulder rotation and later hinging of the wrists. Jack Nicholas allowed his wrists to hinge at the top of his swing. The is what some teaching pros call the tipping point. The weight of the club sets the trail wrist late into the backswing. I know it’s free but….not sure what promoting the hack motion added either?
What the hell are you talking about. I've always enjoyed your videos but this one was all over the place. And seriously, please stop endorsing Hack Motion!!
I like your videos, both the on course ones and instructional ones. However, I think viewers should offer you a mulligan on this one. Somehow, the "circle" concept got lost early on. Take a breakfast ball and redo the whole video.
The “casting” is something Ive somehow developed in the past year. For me, it leads to a huge hook and even topping the ball. Ive gone from a +8 handicap to not even coming close to breaking 100 now. Im even scared to go to the driving range now as Ive shanked so bad recently I may hit the person next to me!
This is incredibly bad swing advice. Poor rephrasing and execution of the motorcycle drill - which is simply a drill to close the club face during the downswing. In addition, the swing is completely off plane and will result in huge inconsistencies. This is garbage content, if you watch the video closely, you will notice how he turns off the SIM and tracer when demonstrating the movement. Why? Because it would show how inconsistent the results are. TLDR; Don’t take swing advice from mediocre content.
Please, please, please don't take this the wrong way. I like your golf instruction, in fact, I just like you as a person, but seriously, what the heck did I just watch? That was malarkey. There's really nothing I can do to formulate that into a training plan. Unless, this was a stealth ad for your wristy thingy. In which case, you know, tell us in advance... In actuality, Ben Hogan preset his wrist hinge early and purposely, so there's opposing views on that theory. Just sayin'...
I do enjoy your videos but sorry this was terrible for multiple reasons...1. One of the littlest guys to play the tour who won multiple events including the masters was earliest wrist setter I've ever seen. Mike weir that is. So how do you say it doesn't work. Secondly, why do you and every TH-camr deliberately hit poor shots to show why something doesn't work. It was so painfully obvious that you were trying to hit the ball poorly.
It’s a great video. I agree you’re not supposed to set your wrists early or late. What works for me is I do my take away and then in middle of my backswing, I cock my wrists slightly, and once I’m at top of backswing, then my wrists become set (due to momentum of backswing) then I’m in good shape-mode on down swing. Mr short game-your video was not confusing at all. Good stuff-thanks!
We all have bad days. Out of 14 minutes you took almost six repeating what we’re doing wrong. When you got to painting you lost me. What were you demonstrating? I wish you guys would start and finish with positives…… the correct movement. You can spend a few minutes on how your students do it wrong and what happens when it’s wrong, etc. but you just take a great five minute video and turn it into a second rate ten minutes video.
This is a video that might take watching a couple of times to get it but just give it your best try in practice and see what happens.
yeah mr. shortgame thx for everyones support!
Love the channel but I have no idea what I just watched...
Same here. I love these videos normally but this one totally missed me. I felt like “am I just stupid or what?” Glad it’s not just me.
You just watched a hackmotion ad.
Seriously, this seemed like one of the least helpful lessons/tips he's done.
so glad i saw your comment. i also have no idea what he just said. "try it out" not sure what to try out or what circle he was talking about. lmao

Lost me on how to paint a circle.
You need to talk a lot less and explain the lesson, we don't need to know about painting.
You've just described the how to of Moe Norman's swing.
In reality.. none of those circles are really noticeable... At least from what I can tell from watching your feel and real...
Would you say, someone with a longer wingspan relative to their height would need a bigger circle?.. I'm 6'1" with a 6'4" wingspan.
That’s it. I will take up painting. Seams i will have to stop my lessons with Peter Cowan.

Is this the Kawaswing?
I think this must take a lot of practice to get right. When I try to go from inside out like this, I spray it. Push right, some straight and some fat.
Didn’t Sir Nick Faldo have an early wrist set? Not bad for the 6 times Open winner!
He was also a pro and can control the face better than an amateur. You are not a pro. Lol.

This is the best video you have made of all time. This was my issue! Thank you

How come when I set my wrists early, the club is not facing that way?
Am I the only one that has felt an instructor has dragged out your training purposely for more lessons?
golf is already a super complicated game and now we are told even to...."paint".
I am so lost. You never actually explained HOW to paint circles with your hand. Drawing little circle with your hand and then what you showed makes me even more confused

No idea what are you talking about the circle ⭕️ thing
