    I believe "bad taste" could be a result of poor visual references regarding the aspects of art and design and also by ignoring the design principles of balance, contrast, hierarchy, color theory etc etc... but also keeping in mind that others taste is not necessarily bad taste, just different taste.

    • @thefutur
      @thefutur  7 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Raymundo Garza taste is subjective. There is no universal standard. Otherwise all cars would look the same.

      Hey Chris Do, I am wondering about your answer regarding bad and good taste which is creating constraint and simplicity but how to do you practice those things and learn them?

  • @joeboyer5152
    @joeboyer5152 7 ปีที่แล้ว +32

    AS you Chris Do said "learn the basics and be creative within the rules before you break them" spoke to me. I knew I had a problem with how I look and go about the ideas I have, but I never would have came back to such a simple solution, so Thank you! Meaning I wanting to be too different and made the process very complicated as I progressed. Again great video thank you a ton!

    That last bit on design brief.. when I was a fashion student we learned making collections and part of that is to make mood boards, they told us to pick pictures (from any source we want, books, internet, life, etc) that inspire us, then from those we need to pick keywords, and they usually want at least 5, and I always gets confused and lost in the design process.. So I did it backwards and do it like you said, I picked the keywords first then find the pictures.... That way my design process is more focused, and the mood board itself is more connected with the design and each of the pictures itself

    Chris, the idea that you gave, of printing a design in a good matt sheet and then do some handmade crafty things on it... I had the same idea. But did nothing to materialize the idea 🙄.
    And thank you so much for explaining how to find out pointers from the design brief. This will help me a lot.

    This episode fills me with deep regret. I am a math student with a deep seated passion for art as well. I wanted to resolve the breach between scientific thinking process and artistic intuition, but was severely jeered by both fronts. I don't mean to be smug when I say that I figured out most of what the discussion about taste, and analysis of art at 17 or so, but because of my country, family, etc. I could never come into the community formally. I mostly scoured the free internet for learning and inspiration. I wish I could join in someday. Maybe in the future, who knows.

    Good taste in design art really boils down to a few things: Visual Harmony, Considered Composition, Form following meaning/Conceptual depth, Using Restraint with care, Considered details. I think if those things are checked off the list it's usually good work.

    Thank you for your thorough explanations! Regarding the topic of increasing your value, should you ask your audience what they like directly? Also, do you have any tips for promoting/marketing prints after the initial launch period without being spammy or offering discounts? How do you keep people interested?

    • @ChrisDo
      @ChrisDo 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The way to keep people interested is to do #contentmarketing. Break a big piece down into smaller bite sized pieces. In the case of art, show process. Show work in various states of completion. Talk about your tools, studio, inspiration and process.
      That's not spammy. People who like your art are interested in how you get there.

    • @danpalacios
      @danpalacios 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you, Chris! You're absolutely right about showing the process. I've done this with my most recent piece and the results speak for themselves compared to when I neglected this step. I definitely plan to do it more.

    • @ChrisDo
      @ChrisDo 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Show your work. It's the title of a book and a principle that artists need to do to market themselves. It's a great way to enroll clients, build a community of like minded people and gain exposure.

      Thank you *****! I agree - the hardest part is just starting. I've been in that "rhythm" for a brief moment, but maintaining it consistently is a whole other challenge. Finding the right schedule and making time has been another challenge for me as I find that I'm a better writer in the morning. Last week, I set a daily alarm for 10 pm to help me shut everything down and focus on rest. I'm hoping this will allow to be more productive with the time I have.

    ok I got a question; How do i get ahead in the freelance game? specifically online and remote designing ?
    You can skip this detail, this is my case: I graduated top of my class, in Broadcasting TV & Radio major and worked as a teaching assistant for about 2 years. But I couldnt ignore my heart's passion; desiging. So I applied for Graphic Design course and got the Adobe certificate, Yet a designing career is kinda tricky and in my country. It is badly paid & dont know why it is looked down on; while it should be treated like art and equal to any other profession, its not just beautiful but also the process takes time, needs effort and creative unique minds with wide spaced imagination. So I wanted to get out the local market and be a freelance designer, possibly online and out of the skinny wallet cycle. Suggestions?

    • @thefutur

  • @venisseguerrero3746
    @venisseguerrero3746 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I actually relate to the artist's best work according to the audience. I've had illustrations that I didn't really like/didn't really think they were good enough but then when people look at them, they really like it. I look at a "bad" illustration (from my point of view) and these pieces are the ones people usually grab and buy and I couldn't really understand it but when Chris was like "You're probably just thinking of yourself" that's when It hits me. OMG i don't have empathy at all >.< How do we work around this?

    Chris Do The Skool Network I had no idea that the design brief is supposed to be provided to us by the client, So if they don't provide a brief should we ask for one?
    Myself, I offer a design questionnaire to my clients since most of them are small/ startup businesses that have little to no design background/ knowledge. Do you suggest a better way to receive design direction from the client?

    • @ChrisDo
      @ChrisDo 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Gaelan Andrade We work with bigger clients like advertising agencies, TV networks and large companies with marketing departments. They will typically give you a design brief, script or storyboard.
      When working with smaller clients, you have to think like an agency and solve marketing problems. This is where something like #Core comes into play. It's a framework (a series of prompts) to help guide the client through defining who they are (voice, values, benefit, etc...) and more importantly their customers.
      Check out The Skool here: theskoolrocks.com/core1/

    What if the art I want to make is almost impossible to make money off of (it's cosplay/costuming just fyi), so I'm pursuing design in hopes that it'll bring me creative fulfillment even though it's not nearly as appealing as my real passion? Am I likely to fail/be unhappy, or is there a chance that once I get more confident in this area I'll grow to enjoy it more?

And my question is: do you think the skills just in graphic design are enough for me to run the agency? do I need any additional skills, like, lets say, strategic branding or consultancy?

    LOVE this episode and the discussion about bad taste. To me LV bags are in bad taste, so are Rolex watches in the wrong context. Bad taste is contextual and personal, but we can all agree that some things are in bad taste. I think it's a spectrum as well as being related to Value (uniqlo) which is related to Quality. restraint is a big one, but that's also a value judgement that we make based on personal taste.

    I've watched a few videos from this channel and I've heard Chris mention "bad" fonts multiple times. I want to know more about what makes a bad font and he said here that they've talked about it before but I didn't see any video specifically mention them. Is it buried in a video somewhere? On a website?

    • @thefutur
      @thefutur  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tommy Byler Tommy. I'm a kind of a purist when it comes to typefaces. I like fonts that were designed by masters who spent a lifetime learning and then designing typefaces to solve a problem. A lot of the typefaces today are designed to be different.
      I like the classics. There's an unlimited amount of designs that can be created by using a core set. Occasionally I'll use a display face but it's rare.

    • @synchrxny
      @synchrxny 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't have any formal training in design but an interest in getting some and (I think) a bit of an eye for it. So forgive me, but what's a mater? Is there somewhere you've elaborated some more on good vs. bad typefaces? A list/examples? I'm intrigued but I'm sure it's difficult to convey through comments.

    Do you have any advice for starting to make your portfolio while still in high school. I have no experience with the programs but my mom does since she is a graphic designer. Since SCAD (the school I'm applying to) requires a portfolio what do I do if I am inexperienced?

    • @thefutur
      @thefutur  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      keeley seim are there any design, lettering or typography courses at your school or community college? If so, I'd recommend taking those first.
      Then, themes Skillshare and TH-cam. Not to mention a host of tutorial sites. Most of them are free.
      Learn the programs first. Then learn design theory.

    Hey Chris did you learn to articulate your knowledge this clear or is it innate?

    • @thefutur
      @thefutur  8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It's not innate. I had a hard time expressing myself because I'm an extreme introvert. These are skills that I learned. I've worked with a business coach for over 10 years, taught for 15 and have been lecturing for the past 5. It's a skill you develop.

    This might sound like a goofy question but might as well ask. I am still a student so don't hold me to this. Can Graphic Designers, Design clothing? Do you have go-to for example Fashion School, Like a, for example, I want to be in the industry creating logos, motion graphics but still want to create a clothing line.

      Udam Liyanage yes. A designer can design anything. You are only limited by the label you put on yourself. It might help to learn to sew and construction.
