  • My FTX Outlaw has been a constant pain in the neck! Suffering more breakages and breakdowns per-run, than any RC I've ever owned!
    With less and less of it being left original, can this lemon be transformed?

    Hello, I have two of these FTX. 1 brushed version, 1 brushless since 6 years at least.
    Brushed version: I burnt 2 or 3 motors. They lasted maybe 20 mn each. So I upgraded to a brushless motor (requires to change the ESC as well). Then the gear spur was used very quickly. After 2 spurs, I upgraded to a metal spur. Nice, but then the pinion gear was used very quickly, had to upgrade to a metal pinion. Driveshaft broke, so I had to replace it with an aluminium one. Then the alum one just broke two weeks ago. Got to get a heater to unblock the screw because I had to apply some loctite, otherwise, the screw would go off with the vibrations...
    Then the brushless version, same issue with the driveshaft and the spur and pinion. All upgraded with metal/alumn parts. Got to upgrade to metal frame 'cause it broke. Rear arm also broke got to upgrade to aluminium as well... Had to change the servo 'cause after a run on the beach, some salty water must have gone in..
    So overall, I spent more time fixing the two damn things than running them. It is a pity 'cause when they are running, they are a lot of fun!!
    Today, I am wondering if I would not be better to buy another brand (Traxxas or ARRMA) rather than countinuing to repair...

    • @TheRCScotsman
      @TheRCScotsman  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ah, man! That's the quintessential Outlaw experience! Yeah, mine has been very, very similar! Spent a lot more on fixes and upgrades, than the initial retail price.
      They are fun, though. There's no denying it!
      It's 100% up to you. There are cheaper brands than Traxxas and Arrma, that still offer strong, reliable models. Have a look at HPI and Maverick, for example.
      However, if you want strength, the Arrma Senton is basically bulletproof!

      Tell me about it, David! Probably the hardest bash it's ever had... and it's fine! And not my typical "It's fiiine", but ACTUALLY fine!
      Yet, it previously broke, just driving along my driveway!

    This is a good RC for the money you pay. For brushed version is excellent and durable enough. For brushless I don’t think that components can handle the forces of the motor. I did my outlaw a crawler and it is absolutely great I love it as much as I love my Kanyon

    • @TheRCScotsman
      @TheRCScotsman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have to agree. As a brushed product it's actually very good. My only gripes would be: A- the ESC is rubbish and B- I'd like to see the chassis mounting points for the rear arms redesigned, slightly.
      As for brushless, well... its needs upgrades, definitely! I don't think the brushless Outlaw should come with the plastic chassis and driveshaft. But it seems I might have finally sorted it out!
      I've seen a few people convert them to crawlers and heard they were good. Have you locked the diffs?

    I was first tempted to FTX as a basher choice as they caught my eye with the semi alloy shocks and thick tie rods etc as well as cheap parts and cheap to buy. I had mostly Tamiya's and old HPI's before the FTX though.
    I feel with mines it's tradition to break down every run and part of the true FTX experience. My Carnage likes to eat spur gears. I've spent more than i should have on a heap of upgrades so hopefully i'll get them fitted soon and if it's good enough to survive a few baterries.

    • @TheRCScotsman

    My brushless outlaw's been really reliable, until I gave my son a go in the woods. He smashed it up pretty badly with some rear end landings from jumps and then crashed full throttle into a tree. Can't really blame the car for that!
    Looks like there's not enough weight on the rear wheels on yours with the battery mounted way up front like that, the rear's bouncing around all the time and getting flipped forward running over rocks. I moved my battery a bit forward and down, but still on the original battery mounts. Fancy trying the HPI wheels too, been using Ftx Bugsta wheels but the foams go flat really quick.

    • @TheRCScotsman
      @TheRCScotsman  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha yeah, I think even an Arrma would lose to a tree!
      Yeah, you are correct about that. I might look into it, but it doesn't really bother me that much. We'll see.
      Well, best of luck in your search. These are HPI wheels, but with dirt-cheap ebay-special tyres and foams. They aren't amazing, but they're good enough.

I do get what you your saying though as some folks have zero luck with theres and I don’t get why like you say can’t be a bad batch. Maybe it’s just the quality of plastic is a bit hit and miss depending on who is working that day 👍😂😂

    • @TheRCScotsman
      @TheRCScotsman  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm still on the standard gearing. It's weird, but many Outlaw owners have no issues with gears, whereas other have a nightmare! I've you're struggling, I'd suggest getting a steel spur and pinion from RW Racing (UK), or Robinson Racing (US).

    Hi, what alternative options are there out there for reasonable money?

    • @TheRCScotsman
      @TheRCScotsman  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      With the return of HPI, they've started to push out the new Maverick models. The Maverick Phantom looks like ridiculous value for money, but I've no experience with it, so couldn't say how durable it is.
      The 2WD Corally trucks are awesome, once you sort out a few issues (you can see my review of the Triton, for example). They are absolute tanks and can survive a horrendous amount of abuse, but they definitely do need modified straight away.
      Otherwise, I'd say look at the ECX range. Their trucks are both affordable and tough.

      It's probably got play in the servo saver. Check if the servo saver has slop in it and, if so, see if you can tighten it. The standard servo is also very slow and weak. A servo upgrade may be on the cards! Good luck.

    Chinese RC cars seem a lot like Chinese watches from a few years back. They may share a name, but they're often made by questionable sub-contractors, shadow factories or people's back rooms. Chinese B2C is the new wild west, as is every non-China supplier selling Chinese products with a dodgy warranty.

    The FTX Outlaw brushed motor is a little lame with acceleration and all the batteries it takes run out in ridiculously short time and take sooooo long to charge. I haven’t used the brushless version but I recon that would fix both these fundamental problems.

    • @TheRCScotsman
