You deserve far more followers! Could you do a vid about the differences between alocasia and colocasia? There is so much conflicting information.

I wish I’d looked up this video before, or that the care websites I looked at for Alocasia mentioned this little detail. I was about to throw away my first little baby Alocasia, ripped it out of the soil by the leaves, and then I noticed.... the underside looks really good with healthy roots that I just damaged by pulling the plant out.... I panicked and put it in water, no clue if it’s the right thing to do or not 😅 then I finally found this video explaining what probably happened....

Can you make a vid on how to take care of a Alocasia during dormancy?

I made the mistake of purchasing a few Alocasia and Caladium in the middle of winter some years ago. They get to my house, and of course, after being snatched from their marvelous greenhouse setting and shipped across the country in trucks/airplanes with less than ideal conditions, they take a tumble and look like they're dying by day 4 of their arrival. I ended up cutting the leaves that had lost all their turgency at the base, so some plants went from 9 leaves to 2. I am happy to report that they eventually recovered. It took about 3 months, but by the middle of spring, they were pushing strong, healthy new leaves and have never gone "suddenly limp" again. They do go dormant and semi-dormant every winter and I allow them to, and they repay me with gorgeous new growth as the hours of sunlight increase and the weather warms up. Even if they're kept indoors...they know WHEN it's time to grow!

I just saw previous vids on this exact beautiful plant. They were so full of leaves, plus when a brand new leaf grows out, the older one just stays on. Thank you for sharing this good info.

I've heard and read that is your Alocasias are cycling, they might not be getting the care they need. Maybe they need more light, warmth, or nutrients.

I was going to comment the same thing. It is NOT normal for an Alocasia to drop a leaf every time a new one comes it. This happens when it is not thriving & cannot sustain too many leaves. Exactly as mentioned in the comment, light, fertilizer, humidity, etc. Figure out what your Alocasia is missing or needs more of & watch it thrive with many many leaves!

I had the African mask (or alocasia polly) with 14 leaves. In a couple of years, it went into dormancy. And it took 1½ years for it to come back.

Alocasia are sooo hard for me, I actually don’t have a single one in my collection right now because they all died! Your Polly is Gorgeous!

Oh no! I feel like everyone has a genus they don't get along with. For me it's the Philodendrons =/

My Black Velvet is definitely going dormant, but the weird thing is that it's got the seasons all wrong. It's summer here in Northern Europe. The interesting thing is that I bought it in the fall and it survived all fall and winter, but maybe because I was doing what you just mentioned: I kept it under a grow light and under a heated pad. It was really big, 7 leaves, but then it suddenly just started making flowers, one after the other...3 flowers. The interesting thing is that I didn't know they were flowers until too late. At first they look like a new leaf. I cut off all the flowers eventually, but then the plant went all droopy on me and started yellowing all the leaves. But so what do I do now? The tuber is still green and firm. Do I wait until next spring (it's gonna be a long time) to water it? Or do I take it out of the soil? So far I've been keeping the soil evenly moist and the plant on a bright spot.

I have 2 Alocasias in my collection right now. A silver dragon that I got from an orchard farm not too far from me back in September. I chose one that was already mature with about 7-8 leaves and a tiny baby plant was in the same pot that already had 2 leaves. This guy has been thriving for me. It already has 2 new leaves on the mother plant and the baby plant just opened up its first leaf with me.
The second Alocasia that I have is a cuprea red secret that I got back in October. It was an online purchase from a new shop and came with about 5 leaves, the newest was very big. This little one started to slowly die back it's leaves, and they were very droopy. It pushed out 1 leaf with me and fully opened up, but stopped growing its newest leaf that was starting to pop up. I already know this plant has most likely gone dormant on me. I just don't know if I should cut the growth that it has and just leave the corm/stem or to just leave it and see if it'll continue to push up and open the newest leaf come spring... I just started to grow house plants near the fall in 2022. And info that I can get would be helpful. 😊

Thank you 🙏🏻🤍 my alocasia zebrina bought in march has been growing a lot, now is all droopy! Sun shined through my window during the warmest months, now in winter the sun is so low it doesn’t anymore, should I move it to a brighter room? Thank you 🙏🏻🤍🔆
