Oh no, it's 1am in Ireland and I must rush to my compost outside in the garden to collect my apparently not dead Alacosia! I had 3 that were potted together when I bought them and I kept repotting them already twice in 4 years when suddenly one of the 3 started to look as sad as yours. Now I can sleep, thank you for sharing. :-)

My alocasia kept dropping leaves since I bought it.. So automatically I figured I was doing something wrong.. I repotted and increased the humidity and I also took out the baby bulbs it had growing because I thought they might take away all of the plant's energy. After this video, I figured mine is probably going dormant.. But since you said and showed that the bulb must be seen- I knew I had to repot mine again.. It was just in time. The bottom of one of the old leaves was already mushy. I took it off. Thankfully the rot hasn't spread. Then I looked at the roots and saw that a new root has actually started growing and it looks like a new leaf might come out soon. The plant might not go into dormancy after all. The alocasia looks tiny now because it has only one leaf left but it looks healthy and I hope it recovers from all my shenanigans.
Sorry for the long message. I am grateful. Have a good day and a good start in the new year! :)

Hi Suzette! I purchased my first alocasia a couple of months ago, a Polly. Mine is planted outside and so far so good. Since our climate is warmer, I don't know what to expect. At least I now know that they go dormant, so I won't pull and toss it if it loses leaves. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you for this! I’ve been wanting an alocasia for a while, but there’s talk in the house plant community that they’re hard to keep alive. My mom grows these in the backyard. She said the same thing. Alcoasia go dormant during the cold months, and they grow back during the grow season. We live in California, so she doesn’t have to dig them up. She keeps the bulb in the soil and they regrow themselves. I went and got myself an alocasia afterwards!

Hi, I just subscribed to your channel and am very pleased I did it. I hear a lot about you especially from Linda Sue and a day ago from Kathleen :-)) both very found of you.
This info about the "african mask" left me speechless because I had no idea this plant bloom nor it go dormant. I thought it always died on my care.. I bought this beautiful plant for about 4-5 times.. after that, I gave up.. if only I knew was just a phase.. but that it even bloom.. wow! What an important information you gave. Interesting is that, although I always search for more and in depth info over the internet about a plant that I purchase, I never read nor heard that alocasia here, go dormant or even blooms.. Thank you !

Back to add. I felt down around the bulb and it felt mushy. Thinking nothing to loose I dumped the pot into a bucket for closer look. The nursery that planted it had the bulb surrounded with peat moss and it was seriously breaking down. So I cleaned it off and the actual bulb was firm with tine new growth points on it. there were also 7 little bulb-lets floating around in the pt and around roots. I re-potted it with the good mix that drains well. Poked the bul-blets around the edges of pot and put the cold sewing room hope for the best. I also checked my little elephant ear bulb and discovered it had a sprout about an inch and a half long so re-potted it gave it a drink and put i back on the warm plant shelf. I think it put itself into dormancy several months ago and now coming out of it. Thanks again. I was close to tossing the Polly. So glad I saw your video. I think she will grow again.

    Happy Thanksgiving Suzette!
Your videos are so informative :)
I recently started collecting my houseplants, my favorites are philodendrons & alocasia ....
I Do have a plant room with a heater & humidifier .... I have several alocasia’s.... frydek, poly, stingray.... all doing well so far in this NJ cold fall/winter....!
Never knew they can go dormant....
They are all pushing out leaves right now.... so you suggest keep feeding them with watering? I use all purpose plant food with CalMag & alternate with fish fertilizer....I water every week or 14 days pending on soil dryness...
    Love your videos!
PS : I picked up 2 amaryllis bulbs today.... can’t wait to see them bloom :)

Yes if they are still growing I'd keep feeding. I have another Alocasia that's still growing and I'm feeding her. But my Polly wanted to rest now. They are the same family as elephant ears so yes they will rest at some time, may be years before they do

Now I have my eye on a colocasia Mojita! So pretty with green & purple..... I think I will buy a bulb & grow in the Spring.....what do you recommend? The plants are so $$$ but I found a nursery that sells the bulbs for $15.... never grew elephant ears from a bulb before....!

      @brianhardaway9716 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I believe the main reason they die is from too much water!! As they get less sun, they need less energy therefore less watering during the winter. I usually start end of Okt early November with decreasing the water intake and letting them gradually dry out. This is also the reason why the soil should be airy not compact so that warmth and air can circulate. The soil should left to dry and then moderately water them. Also leaving them warm is necessary to get through the winter. Haven’t experienced the dying back Chill phase yet on my Babies. But I do decrease the watering and no feeding although they’re pushing out leaves and one has flowered. Just keep it constantly the same, warm, more light, and very little water. Has worked for Me. And to all those thrown out for lack knowledge by the Parents, Forgive Them, for They know not What they do. RIP.

Hey Suzette! I tried to look up information on Alocasias going dormant and found your wonderful video. If I don’t want to remove them from the pots they’re in would it be ok to put them in my plant room with plant lights? At what temperature should i store them? i hope I haven’t overwatered any of them! ugggh I wish i brought them in earlier at the end of summer and maybe I could’ve avoided them going dormant? thank you for making such a wonderful informative video!

Hi Anna... I have mine in my plant room but under a table so they don't get light. I have a table cloths that goes over the front of mine. So anywhere dark and don't water them. As long as the bulbs are still hard and not rotten, they are good to grow again next spring. I have tried to bring mine in early and place in a bright window but they still go dormant on me most years.bive had other years. Like this year where mine are still big and beautiful 😍 but they still might die back and want to rest. And that's ok with me because the following growing cycle they are always bigger and grow more babies.. lol.. and as long as it's cooler like say no cooler than 50 degrees and not freezing for the temps . I keep mine in my original pot and don't repot until the new babies grow bigger and take up the pot space. Good luck and thanks you

Hi... If its yellow you can cut it off. It may just be that one leaf going for now. As long as the others are fine you keep watering it. It could be a while before and if she goes dormant. And I usually see new growth mid to late spring.✌💖
