    I agree with you about everything, very good advices ! light is n°1 issue, very important for having a good growing pace and also for keeping the variegations. Another tip, mostly for beginners, always keep in mind, or written down on a tag on the side of the pot, the exact complete name of the plant, it is useful, you can make some research on Google or TH-cam to know the needs and care of the plant. Also slowing down about watering or fertilizer can be useful ! As for children, being a good "parent" doesn't necessary mean "too much," you can do more harm than good ! sometimes less is more ....

    One of the reasons cuttings might not grow roots fast in a glass of water near a window is because of excess light exposure. Most roots grow better in darkness as they would be found in their native habitats. If you using a potting mix, make sure to use one without fertilizer as so to encourage roots to grow and search for nutrients.
    One of the reasons why houseplants get leggy and fragile is because they aren’t subject to wind as they would in their native habitats. 15 mins from a fan every day will mimic the wind and encourage them to grow denser, stronger stems.

    • @SheffieldMadePlants
      @SheffieldMadePlants  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Sorry, can't get behind your first point. I believe the more light the better for root development. Your second point is interesting.

    I propagate in cold, dark Canadian winters all the time but mostly just plants like Pothos and Vining Philodendrons, plants that root in water easily. I put them under my Sansi Grow light as well usually 1-2 feet away max and it really helps them root fast. I find it is best to propagate in a room that is around 20°-26°C. As soon as they have 2 inches of roots or more I love to transplant them into a small plastic pot with drainage holes into long strand Sphagnum Sphagnum Moss, I soak the moss in water with an organic fertilizer mixed in, since the rooted plants need food and the Sphagnum Moss doesn't have a lot of nutrients. I like fish/seaweed emulsions, then squet out excess water, keep the moss nice and damp at all times, make sure there are lots of air pockets and the moss is not too compact but the roots should be well covered. You can spritz with a spray bottle as needed, in dry winter daily is what I usually need to do. I do recommend watering with a watering can once or twice a week when it is on the dryer side making sure to mix in some half or quarter strength organic fertilizer (depending on how strong the fertilizer you are using is) with the water about once every 2 weeks. Something about the humidity the Sphagnum Moss provides and the oxygen being able to get to the roots way more easily makes new leaf growth happen 10× faster than it would if you were to transplant those same rooted cuttings into potting mix. You can continue to grow Pothos or vining Philodendrons as well as many other plants right in the Sphagnum for 6 months to a year or even longer as long as you transplant to a bigger size as needed and keep fertilizing but I usually transplant to potting mix once the cuttings have tripled in size or after about 3-4 months. You can also propagate unrooted cuttings right into Sphagnum Moss, using the same technique however you don't need fertilizer until roots form and it is best to keep your cutting covered with a clear bag or something for extra warmth and humidity, and make sure they have a lot of sun or a grow light. Look up spagnum moss propagation boxes they will change your life!

    Great video. I wish everyone would calm down when they get a new plant. They immediately want to put it into a pot 3X too big and then mentally shout at it "Now you can grow!" It doesn't work like that. As soon as I go through the 'Your pot is too big. There is too much soil and that soil will stay wet too long after watering' does the light bulb go off in their head why they are killing their plants.

      This way you can keep growing them until you want then to flower.
      Although, if plants see the winter sun and they have a short flowering photoperiod (8-12 hours) most of them will still start to flower even if there is a light on them!
      This has to do with infrared radiation as the sun goes down!

    Heh, it was still +10C outside and the regular +21C inside, but that moment my orchid dropped its flowers when I aired the apartment for few minutes. I suppose the draft from the window was the worst part in its opinion.
    My golden pothos adventure continues. A small leaf with some stem dropped when I tied the leaves around a stick. I thought of, as a funny emergency action, to put it in a mug of water and see what happens. It grew nice roots and now it's pushing a new branch out, it's drinking like 1-2 cl of water a day from the mug. It's the only golden pothos in my apartment that is doing something and it's driving me crazy. I'm starting to think the soil in the pots has mold or something. I'm just a bit concerned about repotting in the winter and I just repotted them at the end of the summer. I think the roots had gotten so overgrown that they were blocking the roots towards the middle from getting water. Though I'm curious if root pruning can be used to keep a plant in a certain sized pot?

      Ah brilliant good to hear if it makes you feel happier we have 20 here and a few are suffering from a slight burn. Personally I think we are too close to the lights(8ft), haven't quite worked it out. What I do know is if you can let those aerial roots with sphagnum moss, Coco chips or plastic cup cut in half wrapped round the back near the aerial root they really go nuts after you've done that. Personally I'm pretty sure we got ours from the same nursery and my main conclusion it's in the wrong soil.

    i often repot as soon as possible - this is the case with aroids and calatheas as, in my case, they often planted in a rather soggy medium (plain raw rice husk) and they rot fast. yes they got stressed out but it's much better than to let them acclimatize while being terrorized by root rot
    this is an actual experience; i kinda wasted a lot of bucks for waiting a week to repot a plant. three days is the longest i can tolerate

    I was under the impression that orchids usually need re potting since they typically are over watered from the big box store. I bought a really nice pair earlier this year as a present for the wife. Looked up some videos and by the time I got around to re potting the orchid it was really too late for one of them. Gave them two to three months to turn around and they died.

    • @whiskybrush3219
      @whiskybrush3219 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It really should depend on the state of the orchid and the extent of the potential damage, be it overwatering or dessication from being on the sales floor for too long. Is the medium appropriately airy or is it hard packed with sphagnum moss? Lady at the market gave me 2 orchids in bloom because they were looking poorly and dehydrated. I normally rehydrate orchids when i bring them home and leave them alone until its time to remove the flower spike. Those 2 were still looking bad 2 days after rehydration, so i repotted them and found some pretty gnarly root damage, and repotting it activated most of the bud nodes on their flower spikes. This was 9 months ago and one of them is still in bloom and growing new extensions on that same spike all the time. The other finished its bloom cycle after 3 months and is now producing buds on 2 new spikes. I have another older one that although it looked ok, the medium did not seem to be in terribly great condition, yet it never stopped blooming for a year and a half so i ended up repotting anyway. It didnt stress it out at all. Eventually its spike died down but I have only ever gone 4 months with that orchid not being in bloom. It is currently still sporting flowers it generated last christmas, and has 2 more spikes coming in. It really is all relative to each individual plant.

    Thank you for this video, useful as always. I have a questions though. I know I can use distilled water to water my plants. What about mineral water? Would that be too many minerals? Would it eventually cause spots on the leaves?
    I was also wondering what would happen if I used boiled (cooled) water to water my plants? Boiling removes calcium (partially) so in theory it should make water softer.
    But if that's true why so many people add eggshells to water and soil?
    I'm sorry for so many questions.

      Hi. I’m not sure about mineral water. Spring is probably better. Using water that you’ve already boiled is fine but I wouldn’t bother boiling water specifically for plants. Calcium is good for plants. It’s chlorine and fluoride that can cause problems

    Monsters are amazing.
    Their leafs behave like solar panels.
    When light is low, the leafs need a more solid surface to soak up the rays and feed the roots.
    But when there is abundant light, the plant self restricts photosynthesis by reducing the amount of leaf surface. = Striations.
