The Sad Reality of Living in an Off Grid Hippie Community

  • Take a tour with me inside a newly opened Hippie Commune. It technically started 3 years ago but has only just started opening up to long term dwellers who want to exchange and work together to build a new life away from the cities. I went there as a workawayer with an interest in potentially living there long term.
It's not the first hippie community that I've been to that's a bit wrong and I certainly have more stories to expose... if that interests you, subscribe with the notification bell on so you dont miss a vid!
I also wanted to add that I spent almost a month at this community and did my best to give it a shot since I'd come quite a long way to get into the Portuguese countryside - currently i don't own nor desire to have a car necessarily, people drive like nutters and the roads around here are tiny!

It would be hilarious if you started your own well run, comfortable, superior OTG set-up just out of sight from this one so you can film these guys sneaking around spying on you, stamping their little feet in consternation.

Sounds like you did not belong there to begin with. Why are you talking bad about something that is not for you anyway. Obviously their setup could be better maintained, but if you did not like it there, no one made you be there. While you were there you could have gotten off your lazy arse and made the shower area, bathroom area, and kitchen a better situation yourself instead of just complaining. You said you aren't allowed to go in the shed, yet you went in the shed to show us. If everything you said is true then you need to do your research and ask more questions next time. If you as a woman don't get a vote then that's on you, not them. You should have made sure you have a voice there if you want one.

I've been to an off grid community, but nothing like this. You are being watched, it's completely disgusting. There is no reason for the showers and toilets to be so open like that. So glad you are exposing this community. Hopefully reported somehow. Please be safe, seriously. It's kinda upsetting. Also, I'm sorry you are experiencing anxiety. These communities (quality ones) are not suppose to invoke stress at all. Communes are shit holes. That being said I am actually quite impressed with what the men managed to build, they built a well that this woman was gathering water from, a water retrieval device on a pivot, houses, farms, solar power facilities, and a bunch of other stuff that makes this place have some semblance of a level of development. Normally the main good part about moving to an area with low development is that the women are more traditionally minded, but in communes it is the opposite and they are ultra low development, so their is virtually nothing good about a commune. A lot of the women don't even believe in monogamy. This woman recorded a 15 minute video complaining about the men while walking around with a charged phone, clothes, food, showered, and in and out of several houses, and complaining about the garden because it wasn't planted in a way that she liked. She is clearly the worst part of that commune and honestly I feel bad for them men that she has to be there, she is probably causing them a headache.

If you die tonight, do you know where you're going? Did you know that Jesus Christ is the only way to Heaven and He loves you?
Through Him, God offers you a FREE gift - forgiveness. All you need to do is repent, turn away from your sins and evil ways,
from now on put your faith completely in Jesus Christ and be obedient to Him.
      Explanation:
God doesn’t want anybody in hell because He loves us, but you must understand why
we deserve hell and why those who refuse to live under His authority will go
there. (Matthew 12:30) ''Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not
gather with me scatters.'' He gave us the law (Ten Commandments) not to make us righteouss, but
rather to show us our sin (Romans 3:20). God gave us free will and since Adam
sinned in the garden, sin is the nature of our flesh and we’ve all sinned.
(Romans 3:23) and the law demands death to those who sin (Romans 6:23). For
someone to be justified before God they have to be sinless, that's why everyone need Jesus Christ.
None of us are good in God’s eyes, because for God good means moral perfection. We all
have broken God’s commandments, we all have sinned in our lives so none of us
are good. ‘’For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is
guilty of breaking all of it.’’ (James 2:10). ‘’For God so
loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever
believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.’’ (John 3:16) That’s why only Jesus can
save us, because He lived a perfect and sinless life and is the only worthy
sacrifice and died for our sins. We aren’t saved based on our good
deeds/works, but only by the grace of God through faith.
''For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith - and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God -
not by works, so that no one can boast. (Ephesians 2:8-9)
He said ‘’it is finished’’ (John 19:30), which means He paid the fine for our sins
(past, present, future) to be forgiven if we repent and trust in Him.
‘’Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that
times of refreshing may come from the Lord.’’ (Acts 3:19) Biblically, a person who repents does not continue willfully in sin.
Repentance is a turning from sin, and it always results in changed behavior (Luke 3:8). While sorrow from sin is
not equivalent to repentance, it is certainly an element of scriptural repentance (2 Corinthians 7:10). Do not play a hypocrite.
(John 3:3) Jesus replied, "Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again."
If you confess that Jesus is Lord (John 10:30) and believe that God raised Him from the dead, then you’ll be saved. (Romans 10:9)
You are born again with the spirit of Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17).
Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him. (John 3:36)
Bible is the Word of God. You may ask how so because it is written by men. Just like a letter is written by a pen,
so is Bible written by God using men. Bible/God's Word was written over 1600 year period by 40 different authors and 66 books, all leading to the coming of God's Son - Jesus Christ. There is consistency of revelation throughout a long time of period, many prophecies being fulfilled.
In the Book of Isaiah you see details about how Jesus Christ suffered even if it was written a long time before His coming.
In the Book of Daniel 500 BC you can read about Alexander the great who lived 300 BC.
We are living in the last days and Jesus Christ will return soon.
2 Timothy 3:1 ''But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty.''
2 Timothy 3:2 ''For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy,''
Luke 21:11 ''There will be great earthquakes, and in various places famines and pestilences. And there will be terrors and great signs from heaven.''
1 Thessalonians 5:3 ''While people are saying, "Peace and safety," destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.''
Matthew 24:39 ''And they were unaware until the flood came and swept them all away, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.''
Luke 21:31 ''So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near.''
2 Thessalonians 2:3-4 ''Let no one deceive you in any way. For that day will not come, unless the rebellion comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction, who opposes and exalts himself against every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, proclaiming himself to be God.''
Revelation 13:16-18 ''And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.''
Matthew 24:21 ''For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been from the beginning of the world until now, no, and never will be.''
1 Thessalonians 4:16 ''For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.''
Matthew 24:19 ''But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days!''
Matthew 24:42 ''Therefore, stay awake, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming.''
Mark 1:15 ''The time has come," Jesus said. "The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!"'
Get right with God and start your relationship with Jesus Christ right now before it’s too late, because there’s not much time left!. "But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.’’ (Mark 13:32)
You may start with a simple prayer from the bottom of your heart, TRULY believing that God listens and
cares. (Jeremiah 29:13) ''You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.''
Get to know Christ through His word. At first I recommend reading Gospel of John and book of Romans. God bless you!

I moved to a community like this about 10 years ago, in SW Wales. It was pretty revolting. And it was "ruled" by a sociopathic wanna be dictator. Bullying, gaslighting, lying, cheating and stealing. Low flying head trips. But we (the rest of the residents) stood together and get the person OUT.
So now, 7 years later, we have a tidy, well decorated and functioning main farm house, Wood fired heating and hot water. A shower block with wood sauna, a party barn, lots of accomodation for visitors, multiple workshops, storahge barns, and a productive "no dig" forest garden.
And most of all PRIVACY. Our biggest enemy is age. Most of use are 50+ and have worked this land bloody hard. We're falling to bits. Getting the right people to join us, who have more energy is difficult.
We are a community, a "loose parish", where everyone is different, diet wise, spiritually, we only eat together once a year, as it's too difficult. So we feast at Winter Solstice. Different diets, mealtimes and intolerances make it tricky. But we all rub along, solve or differences, work together on projects and singly. We get each others limitations and don't bully and mock. We value our privacies hugely. Bathrooms, showers and loos have locks (inside!) an aren't public or overlooked.
Well done for warning people about This Particular "Community", but we're not all like that! Most people love it here (visitors) and come back, appreciating our way of life and the energies they get from us and the land.

Depending on the weather, those vans and campers can become very stifling especially in the summer months. If you're parked somewhere that safety isn't an issue, you can maybe get some degree of relief (not wake up multiple times in the night drenched in sweat) by rolling down the windows, but if a pretty young woman's been spotted coming and going from the van by local creeps, you're looking at a potentially nightmarish situation. Peeping Toms can escalate their behavior, and a van with the windows rolled down might encourage a dangerous person to do something predatory, even if it's just trying to get a look... sorry, but if it were me, I'd not want that to even be a concern.

I'm back in the city and i do enjoy my mental freedom which i regained here. after this four yeas i'm still realizing how much damage it did to me and my mental health. being off grid with only few people who do not treat you right, but there is no way of escaping, is stressfull! i enjoy being around people who are willing to discuss about racism, colonialism, social injustice and so on and who don't want to escape everything which is not pleasant...
      Hope you are doing well!

I wonder if the rainbow gatherings from years ago (like ten years ago) may have been better than they are now. I've had friends who have been to the gatherings a long time ago and they said wonderful things. This year Sky Cowan's from the TH-cam channel Skylife, went to a rainbow gathering. Her experience was so bad that she says that she's never going back. She ran into a lot of predatory homeless men. There was even a fight that was caught on camera with an intoxicated, angry man. After I watched her video, I don't want to go to one of my local rainbow gatherings.

Thats ignorant. I dont label people but most of the "hippie" communes Ive seen have been going for 50 years give or take and they run on "punk" anarchist principles. They do things right and most of what people do in successful communites was learned for those "hippies". Sanitation, water filtration etc. To imply "punk" and anarchist ideals are mutually inclusive is hilarious. Or implying that negativity, creepy men or sexism doesnt exist in that scene is equally funny. This is not the real deal at all and as such not representative of a "hippie" commune. Crust punks are just hippes with mad max outfits anyway

The problem with any community like this is A) you have 1 guy or family who owns the property and they permit others to live on it but run it like a dictatorship (rightfully so as it's their property) and/or B) a group of people purchase the property and can't agree on how anything should operate.
You can get solar panels that connect to your back pack that can charge your camera, phone, etc.
I myself am in the process of putting together a 48 acre property (already own) with 25 opod tube houses (have ten already) with a communal rec room, with a 248,000 watt solar system. The concept is simple, give people the opportunity to see how simple one can live. There will be food gardens, I have a stream running through the property, etc.
Opod tube housing offers all you need and has every creature comfort of home.
Getting away from this politically charged atmosphere in the US is a must.

I have been interested in know if there is any sort of organization that helps these communities connect and get physical and intellectual resources needed to be safe and successful. I realize that sort of tool may be against some community’s mission or goal, as it could feel like a governing body of sorts, but wouldn’t it be nice if there was some sort of authority you felt you could trust if it vouched that a community was safe? Or that could be contacted if a community needed help with a certain project, requesting help of someone with a specific expertise? I’ve been wondering how we can make eco villages that are more successful, more sustainable, and more plentiful. And to be honest it seems like an NGO like this could build the bridges needed to help connect you to a place you would like to call home.

Any woman in a community with men needs to be wary. It's best for these things to be run by women as women will ensure these environments are safe for all whereas this won't even be considered by men. My family is portuguese so the sexism doesn't surprise me.

The whole workaway idea was a great concept, but unfortunately, like many things - ruined by human greed. It just became people getting free labor.
(Open view toilet and shower is ridiculous wtf?)

Its one of those things, ive done it a few times and sometimes its great and sometimes just straight up exploitation. Not sure its the best model, I particularly hate how the volunteers have to pay for the platform when hosts don't.

Maybe his motivation to not want to show you the bathtub wasn't because of your gender, but because you (as you admit) can't untangle a shower curtain.
Also wtf is the problem with building a toilet yourself, if you have such a problem with the existing one? This setup is like 70$ and a few hours of work. If everyone finds the current toilet insufficient, then they'll probably appreciate it, if you improve the community with your labor, instead of simply complaining about what they've contributed.
Or just go the extra mile, raise funds among your community and buy a used porta potty for 200$.

Hmmm, I'd love to hear the other side to this. Oh well.

    • @celestialcow
      @celestialcow  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

The other side was a rich northern European couple moved to Portugal to invade another countries land because it is cheaper for them. In turn raising up the prices so local ppl can no longer afford the land. This couple are using people through workaway to do slave labour and calling it a community collaboration when there isn't any collaboration in reality. The reason why they are not on tape is because they ran off back to their home land to buy a bunch of stuff cheaper there. So even tho land in Portugal is cheap, other commodities are not. When they left, they left me stranded without electricity because of their one sided judgements.
