We met up with Kevin, who is living an alternative lifestyle, off grid in a 'Hut in the woods'.
He begins by introducing how he's lived an alternative life for about 16 to 17 years, spending 13 of those years living in a van, before purchasing the land he currently resides on. His philosophy is to live simply, which importantly gives him more freedom, time in nature, and time to enjoy life.
He describes his hut as not luxurious but practical, built by himself with basic technology, yet providing warmth, shelter, and sustenance, all at a low cost. His land features various elements: a guest wing, fruit trees, raised beds for vegetables, a polytunnel for year-round produce, and a renewable energy system such as a solar system, and plans to introduce Hydro-electric.
The documentary showcases his self-sufficiency efforts, from growing food to preserving it for the winter. He emphasizes learning from nature, identifying various plants for food and medicinal purposes. Kevin also highlights the community aspect, interaction with locals, and the joy of rural living.
His off-grid lifestyle requires resourcefulness, where he repurposes materials for construction and utilities. He demonstrates his homemade long-drop toilet, outdoor bathing setup, laundry methods, and kitchen amenities, including a log burner he uses for cooking. He also talks about finances, and how living this frugal way of life helps to reduce how much he has to work at his job.
While admitting occasional loneliness, Kevin cherishes the companionship of his two dogs and finds community interactions by occasionally visiting local shops or butchers. The governments worst nightmare. Living simply and sufficiently off the land. Not wanting for much and growing your own food and being sustainable.
This is how we should all live. Shame the government make it so hard to live like this.
Not only is Kevin living, he's given his beautiful dogs the best life also.
My girl's are rescues. I rescued the big one in june 2020 as she was rearing 11 pups on her own. All the pup's got homes and then in September of 2022 i took on the little one who needed rehoming. How could i refuse her the chance to be back with her mum who she hadn't seen for over 2 year's

Brilliant story Kevin, you're a good man, a chosen one to give to animals. I took two rescues on as pups, one is now 13 & the other 11. My best friends who show unmatched loyalty & love.

Kevin is an absolute legend… We spent some time with him in Norway whilst on travels in our campervan. You could not want to meet a more genuine, beautiful soul.

I've got nothing but admiration for this man, I think he's brave and influencing. I can quite easily see myself living the same lifestyle. I'm envious of what he has achieved, if more people were like him, the world would be a better place.

I admire this man a lot. I am 73 and very happy with my Mrs. in Thailand for 1/3 of the cost of living in the USA. Never will go back I am in Paradise.

looks lovely kevin and you speak just as i do . what i like is you dont want to bother other people and dont want them to bother you the way life should be in my eyes. only problem is people are forced into a modern way of living and cant escape, only way is to take the bull by the horns and do it. i did it few years ago and the wife was dragged along lol and still looking to this day for perfection . these places are few and far between and like you say its like winning the lottery so enjoy it and hope you have many years ahead.

As a f/t gardener, I have grown my own tobacco and once cured is amazing to smoke.
No chemicals and you will lose the cough from tailor made cigs.
Each plant produces millions of tiny ( teeny weeny) seeds so is self sustainable.
My dog is my rock, buddy and the bond we have is unbreakable.
Although I'm married and have a 11 year old son at home, the countryside is where my heart is at. This guy is living my dream 👌👍

I totally get it , how often I take my lawn chair and sit by the lake or in the woods to listen to nature, and to appreciate the beauty of nature.. I always tell my children, we were meant to live off the land, which is working for ourselves, not stressing out over making money for someone else to get rich. and ... What a wonderfully rich life Kevin leads. He really does have it all (almost....I am sure a good woman is on her way to him). That aside, the planning laws and redistribution of land must be changed and implimented in the UK. Land ownership is out of reach for most people and corporate/historical titled and family possession is not fit for the 21st century. Many young and older people want to live in different ways and without access to European cheap land since Brexit, UK soil needs to be redistributed much more fairly and openly. Being free to build your own dwelling without all of the restrictions and planning barriers also needs to be rethought. Is there a movement in the UK to support/advocate for these changes?

p.s I do have somehwere in wales by the sea that i goi to in the summer time only. I am in my 70th year and have been diagnosed with 4th stage cancer. however I feel that owning a simple connection to ourselves through the natural world is just about the best medicine there is. The turkey tails growing with you are absolute medicine that i need!! The UK government and the NIMBY brigade will do their utmost to stop people living self-sufficiently on their own land.
Perhaps, but let's hope not.
Enforcement tried to bully us into moving off of our land. There's always a workaround. What an adventure for my kids and animals. Wouldn't change it. The freeist feeling you'll ever feel within the invisible prison walls. If you get a chance, do it, don't just talk about it.

Hi Sarah, I just read your comment I’m working on a program with a partner to show people how to do this, but effectively you can start off with a minimum of 12.5 acres (5 ha) and you will be able to get the ball rolling if you have a mind to set up a small holding. there’s more to it than just that, but that is the starting point. We are 2/3 of the way through proving our system and will set up a youtube channel and podcast soon. Keep going you WILL Achieve your dreams 😊😊😊😊😊

Ive been dying slowly and painfully living in this traditional lifestyle. I have a 17yo son that i raised on my own as a man. He will graduate in a few months and if i can find the will to continue i will move to a 3acre plot of rural land i have on another island.
Ive been beat down over the course of my 40years alive an if im completely honest checking out early once my son graduates is something i think about daily.
My life as a kid myself was a mess and i (like MANY men today) have no real friends or even feel like a relationship with a sane caring woman would be anything besides a 1 in a billion miracle.
Sorry to be a bummer, not feeling too well today.

Hope you’re doing well mate, keep breathing and carve a life you want when your son graduates. Don’t check out early, otherwise your son will pay the price. Create the life you want mate, don’t worry about other peoples opinions once your son is graduated. If somethings not working for you then change your lifestyle to something that works for you. Other peoples opinions aren’t your concern.
