Thank you for the clear explanation re: setting up a new SSD. Thing is, I want to use the SSD to set up a Linux drive. The computer I am working with is a Windows 10, so if I create a partition and format it from Windows OS, will it still function in Linux? Ideally, I'd like to download the Linux install software while on Windows, save it to the new SSD which is connected via an external dock, and then plunk the SSD into a second computer. Thanks.

I hate it when people say, "You probably will/won't be doing X." Then don't explain what to do in case of "X". I'm planning on migrating my OS to this drive once it's formatted, so do I use MBR instead of GPT or will that screw something up?

Not sure why I end up with the weirdest of issues, but here's my situation.
I've an NvMe SSD that is the boot drive, running Windows 11. I have a SATA cable that I've been using an HDD on. It's been working fine all this while as a storage device on the Dell Inspiron. I then decided to upgrade the storage drive by swapping out the old HDD with a NAND SSD. Plugged it in and it didn't get recognised - not in BIOS, not on Device Manager and surely not on Disk Management.
The cable still works fine on the old HDD and the new drive gets recognised when I use it as an external drive using a USB cable. The cable, SSD and the laptop just don't work with each other. I even pulled the boot NvMe out and forced the system to accept the SSD being the only drive plugged in - still doesn't detect it.
I've even initialised the SSD under GPT, partitioned and formatted as NTFS drives and they all work fine with the external USB cable. It just fails to show up on the system the moment I connect it as an internal SATA device.
I've tried all sorts of options and am left with the option of changing the cable, but that's a cost which is wasted if the cable I have is good (because it still works fine with the HDD).
    Any suggestions will surely help.
