Old guy here. My first new car was a 1984 Mazda B2000 SE pickup. I loved that truck...cruised the freeway at 70 and was running at like 2000 rpm. My second new car was a 1986 Mazda 626 (non turbo). Loved that car too. After that until today it's been almost all Hondas. Now I'm retired and looking at the CX-50. Thanks for your video.
I placed a deposit on a Rav4 XSE hybrid almost 3 months ago. I'm still waiting. I actually like the body styling of the CX-50 over the Rav4. The CX-50 doesn't have a digital rearview mirror, 360 pano camera, or large digital gauge cluster. I would like to have those features but they are not mandatory. And the CX-50 hybrid is around $3k less than the Toyota. There may be a Mazda in my future.
Hello David! First time viewer ... what a great review! Definitely a new subscriber now. Currently driving a 2010 RAV4 Ltd. V6 that is going to turn 300K this week. It's been a great vehicle but I know it's not going to last forever, so this now might be on the top of the replacement list! Best Regards, David from Oshawa
I've been researching this car a lot. I've driven the non hybrid versions. The turbo had terrible road noise. I feel it was the tires. The seats are also uncomfortable. The gs-l I drove was noticeably quieter but also had uncomfortable seats. I have faith in the hybrid system longevity. Unfortunately the seats are a common complaint as are the numerous squeaks and rattles that appear. While this may be because of the sport feeling Mazda wants, for me its a fail. I've put a deposit on one here in Ontario but will make my decision when they arrive in early 2025. As always, thank you for your expertise David.
Thanks for the great review and recommendation. I do think that the US version should have a heated steering wheel. Like Canada, it gets cold here! I would have expected a 360 view camera also? Thanks again for your insights!!
I agree, makes no sense to omit the heated steering wheel. I would also like the 360 view camera. On the plus side, the CX-50 hybrid is about 2 or 3 thousand less than the Rav4 XSE hybrid that I have a deposit on.
Remember that the heat in a steering wheel is only at "10 and 2." Also, if you live in a cold climate you're going to be wearing gloves. Here in the mountains of CO I have never longed for a heated steering wheel. I think it's overrated. I do think the 360 degree camera would be a welcome addition, though.
People always complain about the lack of touch screen access on certain screens, but to me, that's better. Using the dial doesn't take my attention off the road as much as touch screens do. Also, it keeps those pesky finger smudges on the surface of the screen to a minimum.
One of the biggest problems with the newer suvs is the amount of exterior plastics that they're putting on them. Each year, the plastic is thinner and cheaper. The end results after only 2 or 3 years the plastic develops what's called tiger striping. Applying a plastic sealant, sooner rather than later, is very beneficial. As for the paint, yes, the quality of the paint is good, but it's very thin on the japanese models compared to american models. Mazda paint is especially thin, so try to put a good ceramic coating or sealant on it. And try to limit the amount of high p h automatic car washes favoring instead ph neutral hand washing.
David, You know all about the ins and outs of auto production, how can Toyota be supplying RAV4 hybrid components to Mazda when they cannot keep up with demand for their own RAV4 Hybrid? 🤨
Its too bad they dont have a plugin hybrid version. If it matched the Rav4 Prime numbers or came close to it I might have waited for it, as I think the CX50 looks better.
Agreed. People equate touching as more intuitive and modern. When really, if you give that dial a chance it's actually more efficient once you get the muscle memory down.
Absolutely agree withe wheel its so much more efficient especially while driving. Touching screen would be annoying while driving such large suv. I love my cx90 as well
I think reviewers miss the point about the infotainment screen. It's safer than a touch screen! To use a touch screen in most cars requires you to look down into the car. Not so with the Mazda system. Also, it is often difficult to use touch when the car is bouncing or swaying. Not so with the Mazda system. Touch is not necessarily more "advanced."

The CRV is a great car, but is inherently less reliable than the RAV4 or CX-50 hybrid. The reasons are the conventional transmission and the mechanical drive for the rear wheels. The CRV has a drive shaft and rear differential which the Toyota system does not. Also, the conventional transmission in the CRV will require much more maintenance than the Toyota. Finally, the cylinder fuel injection system on the CRV will let residue build up and the Toyota will not.
CX-50 is such a handsome vehicle 🤩 I’ve test driven it twice. But Dave, will you comment on the rear torsion beam suspension? I’m disappointed because if I’m paying a lot of hard earned money for a new car, I worry that its rear suspension isn’t as robust as it ought to be 😕
The Touch Screen is the NEW Shiny thing, BUT it's NOT an improvement over the console dial. I applaud Mazda for NOT following the pack into a full fledged touch screen. Using the touch screen Definitely results in more eye-time diverted from your windshield view.

CRV felt like a boat. Interior was definitely not as nice as the CX50. The CRV did have more space, but does feel bigger when going around corners and parking it. I preferred the driving dynamics of the 50, so that basically sealed the deal for me.
