The art of the deep yes: Justine Musk at TEDxOlympicBlvdWomen

  • Justine Musk is the author of three traditionally published dark-fantasy novels. She blogs about life, women and creativity at www.justinemusk.com.
    In her TEDxOlympicBlvdWomen talk, Justine explores the 'deep yes' of self worth: what it is, why we lose it, and how we can get it back.
    About TEDx, x = independently organized event
    In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

    As we grow up we forget our true values. We alter that 'greatness' based on other people's opinions and give up our dreams thinking we don't deserve them. Good speech Justine and thank you for the reminder.

      She is not the type of girl who didn't succeed too much in her career, and then married a nerdy guy who just turned to a multimillionaire after being friendzoned for years. And she didn't divorce him in the middle of 2008 crisis when he almost got broke. She is just a strong, independent and free woman who does whatever she wants.

    Powerful and authentic messages. From personal experiences, it is so damn true that if you are unable to say NO out of your deep yes, someone else will say it for you and walk all over you for that. This has nothing to do with 'feminism' (it is by all means just a label anyway) which is overly used and has become distorted in itself. This is a message that's needed for all women,, men, adolescents,.. who project their self-worth outwardly instead of taking a moment to calm down and learn how to say no to say deep yes!

    You're beautiful, just as you are, Justine. And yesterday, when I came across the article you wrote on Marie Claire, it's saved my life. Thank you! You're strong and brave woman to stand through all these events in your life, find yourself back and share your lessons with others. Some men regardless of how successful they are, they become a bully because within themselves they are insecure, they're not happy with who they are and they become harsh with themselves and with others. Of course, they are clever enough to mask it in the name of "self-improvement". They make you feel like you're not enough and unimportant. But you're enough and as long as you're happy, Justine, you make the world more beautiful :-) And men come and go but you're happy because you know you're always there for yourself :-) Because you write, I live a better life. Thank you for writing! :-)

    The negative comments over here reminds me of a very wise saying "Don't look at who is saying, Look at what is being said". Unfortunately, we start labelling and judging people which strips world of the ability to hear or benefit from the very person who has been publicly (and in her case, even emotionally) bashed. Her "Deep Yes" strategy about self worth does not only apply on women, but on men or almost everybody who feels neglected, over-powered or forced to carry a low self-esteem for excuses i.e. marriage, joblessness, homelessness, hunger, skin colour or geographical location. If she can raise a son who will be far better than his father in terms of relationships, I'm sure that will will truly attest to the success of her "Deep Yes" strategy.

I think it's powerful in so many ways because of the raw self awareness you demonstrate. Being 23 it is hard to envision the bad ass woman's life. The more women empowering one another to tap into their own greatness, the better. Thank you !

    Brilliant. I literally identified with every word spoken.
    I recall receiving a " Nothing Book", for Christmas when I was eight years of age. It was a bonded paperback of two hundred pages-- all blank. It became my journal, and I wrote until I filled the last page. Moving from my family home at 19, I discovered it and trashed it.
    My first instinct upon reading it had been that it was creatively haunting, brilliant and yet, in my ever present need to care for everyone and maintain the exhaustive role of " perfect- daughter ", I could not let any more of my differences take root in my family.
    It took almost twenty years of denying a passion, true soul- talent, to reemerge and thrive. Thank you Justine.

    "Women want a grand and inspiring call to adventure that points it's way to the deeper life, even if it's still unclear....what that kind of badass womanly life is supposed to look like. Listen to the voice within.... "
    Once upon a time, I hadn't the use of the word 'NO' in my life, because I didn't honor the deep yes of my soul. I did not feel worth setting that line in the sand between my own inner YES, that was wrapped up in a loving or stern NO to other's. I didn't have the NO to stop quite a few atrocities done to me. That was then this is NOW. I can say NO easily when that line crosses over onto the DEEP yes of my soul! Yep, it was possible for me, and it is for you. Choices. I love myself, and know I am a gorgeous, loving, co-creatrix with the divine. yup... I RISE, you RISE, we RISE!!!!

My parents separated when I was 2 years old, we are six children in the family, I grew up seeing my Mom lonely while striving so hard for a living. I worked after classes at the age of 5 in my grandparents business. and I gave my earnings to my Mom. I prayed so hard before I go to sleep, that my parents will reconcile and we will have a happy family. It did happened after 20 years, I was already 22 and have a family of my own. I was so happy when they had their reconciliation in Canada with my four siblings. I believe in prayers, I believe in God, He has no image, God is Goodness and God is Nature.

    The 'deep yes' resonates so much with me. I actually think that awareness doesn't contradict relationships, it allows us to show up sincerely in them.

  • @AlmaSdance
    @AlmaSdance 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    "The deep yes is the right to dream your dreams and live an authentic life as the hero of your enfolding epic. It is an awareness of your imperfections and the knowledge that you are fabulous anyway...If we do not see single life as a real alternative we remain just as controlled by marriage as any previous generation. And if you can't say "No" to something you can't really say "Yes" to it either...Behind every "no" there is a deeper "yes" to whatever it is that you do want. "No" is like a bright line that when used properly marks off where you end and others begin. And we learn this young. I have kids and when they want to assert their power and individuality they say "No", "No". But when you lose your deep "Yes" you also lose your bright "No". How can you say "No" to protect what you want if you don't even know what you want?!...When we have only ourselves to find the way, make the way, and lead the way we need to trust the deep yes so that we can trust ourselves, we need to trust the deep yes so that we can trust each other."

    I have a negative knee-jerk reaction to a lot of what is referred to as feminism. But this...whatever this is, I'm on board with it.
    I think there's a number of men who are game to be the Hermione to a woman's Harry, ie: are cool with being the supportive, stable partner while the woman in the relationship perhaps takes more risks.
    I think there's a number of men who likely will benefit from the message of this video, a lot of people who feel obligation to others before themselves and are thus hesitant to allow themselves "the deep yes". But yeah, the way things are, there is more of that expectation from women.

    • @CikisHelyzet
      @CikisHelyzet 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You pretty much nailed Feminisn, so maybe you can question those knee-jerk reactions a little more deeply. Feminists are all different and have different thoughts. You wouldn't say you can't get on board with science because a scientist offended you, or disagreed with you. Get on board. Feminism means greater choices for men as well. It's not a women's issue, it's for all of us to work together so your daughters and sisters can also live out their potential. Thereby freeing your sons and brothers to pursue theirs, whatever that may look like. :)

    Wow she looks amazing, Elon Musk is a brilliant man otherwise, but when it comes to women, he really could have done better to try and save their marriage. Although it's kind of clear that he is after looks. His second wife was insanely hot too.

      QuantumBraced Its not that easy though.. Us normal middle class marriages take a toll when there are financial decisions and pressure usually involves support from spouse. Being CEO of 3 companies for sure it'll be a lot of stress for this to be added on top.

      QuantumBraced She is very self aware and extremely capable. She is a visionary. She has her own special talent. She was the woman, wife and great inspiration placed into the life of Elon to bring something to the world so beautiful and valuable for all of humanity. She reminds me of Trump's first wife. She was too strong for him. Insecure men need constant validation which they seem to get from their wives and aquaintances. Thank you to all visionary women that embrace Justine's ideas and do something about it!

      Uh, no. She strung him along until he was a Silicon Valley millionaire, at which point she told him that if he asked her to marry him, she'd say yes. Everything Elon has accomplished, he would have done just as well without her.

    Good message, the body language was distracting: looking to the floor, drinking water, eye contact, standing on one leg and no make up. However, very brave, she's given a TEDX talk, most of us in these comments haven't done that.

    You seem nervous, which surprised me after my interactions with you online, years ago. I never liked you back then, because of how you seemed to use a crowd against me when I simply shared an opinion in a site we shared. At the time, I felt your need to use a crowd against me was weak. But, I like this side of you. And I've grown to understand why you hated me so much, back then. It appears we are more alike than different. At least by what you've said here. I thought your words here were well thought out and inspirational for women. I wish you peace and I hope you have found happiness. From one competitive woman to another. I'll sign this by how you knew me, in case you read these comments. JLZ

I put my creativity to good use but i don't compete with my husband. Just because he's the head doesn't mean i live in his shadow ...i am the neck I say where the head turns. He does the work and I'm ok with that.

    If Elon Musk was not working 24/7 at spaceX, Tesla and SolarCity, I am sure he would make anything possible to sustain his marriage with this lady. They both are smart, wise, kind-hearted and thinkers.
    If he sometimes sleeps 1hr in 24hrs and doesn't have time for breakfast, it is hard to give his wife enough time for hang out, time for talk, romance and love.
    But whatever Elon Musk did, he did it for HUMANITY and not for his personal worldly enjoyment.
    I really feel sad for him and he deserves the highest respect.
