There are just some insecure who cant produced enough beauty from their mutated population. Also, the Singsons are known to be a massively corrupt and incompetent government official. Just look at the poverty rate of his province against much money he has. I don't think there's any mystery on where that money came from.

As a South African, who is well aware of the sad reality our big 5 animals, plastered on his walls, are going extinct.
The fact that this man can disgracefully show off his trophies (which apparently include the women as well, which is a whole other debate in itself)
I have grown up always knowing these big and majestic creatures and how special they are to me and my culture in South Africa - they are so important that they are printed on our money, the world's precious paper.
I am sad that a man with such cruelty and disgrace running through his veins gets to live a lavish and rewarding life, yet the people who are fighting for these animals often live in poverty.
I find people like this disgusting - and he probably knows it too, which is why he tries to cover himself up with models surrounding him, beautiful women, private jets and other money rich resources.
I am sick to my stomach - and the fact that he's PROUD of this all makes me sad to call him a part of the human being species.

The beauty pageants in the PH involving young women from the overseas, US, Canada and other countries were often questionable a process. My niece was talked into joining, she won the California preliminary qualifying contests. The elimination process would result to $25,000 top prize in the PH. . Few days before the final, the PH organizers allowed a last minute substitution because the one representing the PH accordingly suddenly fell ill. The last minute contestant won to the disgusted contestants. I was later informed that the last minute contestant received or was paid only $5,000. It was a scam all along.

Thank you, CNA for uploading this Undercover Asia series. It's interesting to watch another perception about societal issues in different countries of Asia.
Not all dark stories cited in this episode are new to me. I've heard of them; some I've even watched on the news (like Ms. Canada's sexual harassment case). It's sad how beauty pageants are taken advantage of by perverts or sex predators.
I am especially sad by Ms. Janina San Miguel's traumatic experience. I didn't know about that. It sounds like a trauma story of a K-pop idol trainee (isolation and all).
I'm sure many of my fellow Filipinos are not happy of this episode 🤷🏻‍♀️ but I am glad that this dark side of beauty pageants is exposed and the stories of people affected of it are heard.

Funny, he says "girl's from the Philippines can stand it with the world" but the other element is that although local Filipinos support the pageant, the pageant scouts select girls from overseas and just use the local girls to create some kind of Cinderella illusion that could transform a poor beautiful women's life. All the recent Filipino winners of Miss World and Miss Universe, ALL, have foreign fathers and were born in Europe, Australia or America.

There is a story/urban legend here in the Philippines. It goes that a certain show had a pre-pageant party on a yacht. All the candidates were given a chance to mix it up with the judges, promoters, producers, ets. This usually meant these VIP's would be having a contestant in their bed that night, and these contestants would be assured of being in the top. Now Chavit apparently indicated to the organizers that he wanted this one particular contestant, a beautiful and young lady, in his bed when he retires for the night. It is said that after the party, he retires to his luxury yacht room. In the room waiting for him was the lady, full dressed. She immediately approaches him, gives him a hug, and says "Hi lolo! Anak po ako ni _______! Alam niyo po ba kaya niyo ko pinatawag?" (trans: "Hi Grandpa! I'm ________ daughter! Were you aware that's why you called for me?". It was his grandchild from one of his illegitimate children. Chavit supposedly was so furious that he wasn't informed of this, that he had the contestant escorted off the yacht, and then beat and fired his organizers. Urban legend, don't know if it's true.

This is why I left the pageant world early. My Filipino mother still doesn't understand but I saw all the red flags & decided to cut all ties. I don't regret the fun experiences & opportunities that I had to work with charities & good-hearted people, but there was a multitude of incidents where I had to argue & defend other contestants because of the abuse of power, emotional manipulation & psychological abuse. I have competed locally in Canada & Internationally, won crowns, trained contestants & have judged. Not all pageants are as dark but they are the majority & are expected. I loathe to see mother's put their young daughters in these beauty circuses. Please think better of their futures & choose wisely.

In some countries such as South Korea, China or the Ukraine they even have booking agencies who specialize in offering this services. A rich man does not mind to pay 10 - 15 k to have a night with the newest beauty queen, it is nothing for him.

Agree. Politics aside, the Singsons are old money. Gold and tobacco money (as well as trading money) from the Ilocos region made said place prosperous for some way earlier than the “sugar money”” families from Western Visayas. C.S. was from from a “poorer” branch of their clan but not without the connections and name.

The good in pageants surely outweighs that of some bad that can be sifted out (e.g. use of enhancement drugs, predatory sponsors, etc). Individual experiences of pageant alumni differ and can be polar opposites.

The history of beauty pageants in the Philippines goes way back. During the Spanish colonial period, towns paraded their young ladies in religious processions, the most beautiful of them portraying the role of Queen Helena (Reyna Elena), who discovered the True Cross of Jesus. The Santacruzan parade is still practiced in modern times. The 1900s witnessed the rise of the Carnival Queens, the precursor of Philippine beauty pageants.
