- As a result of pretty unfavourable weather when I've been free, this was my first wild-camp since the end of February and although very cold at night, conditions were excellent. This contributed to a thoroughly enjoyable trip up one of my favourite mountains.
Your enthusiasm was infectious and as always you made us smile . Thank you 🌸
Hello Victoria. Many thanks for watching and your kind comment. Best wishes, Chris.
Thanks Chris, wonderful video as always. I especially love your knowledge of the natural world. The saxifrage was a stunner.
Hello Di. I do like the wildlife aspect of my trips. Thanks for watching. 👍
Nice one Chris. Brings back good memories of our wild camp there a few years back. ⛺👍
Cheers Ian. One of my favourites is PYG. 👍
Absolutely brilliant footage and information
Please keep em coming
Thanks Andy. Best wishes, Chris
Another cracking Vid Chris - can't believe I've done Pen-y-ghent a few times and walked straight past the Saxifrage! On a side note that Moor where you had a bite to eat always fills me with a sense of foreboding for some reason. Keep up the excellent Vids, ATB Steve
The sax' is very easy to walk past Steve if you didn't know it was there. There is more on the descent near Wainwright's limestone pillar but it is quite high and out of reach. 'A sense of foreboding'......yes, there are certain locations that do that to me too.....it's a strange sensation. Thanks mate. ATB, Chris
A real tonic Chris! Yep, Penyghent is a proper mountain, and I hope to do it one day myself. Keep it up👍👍
Thanks Anthony. It's a lovely mountain, busy, but lovely! 🙂
On the catch up at last Chris! Gorgeous scenery looked bloody chilly overnight though, we're looking forward to watching more 😊 Have fun Fiona & Neil x
Hello Fiona and Neil. Yes a cold night but nice to see a bit of sun earlier on. Thanks for watching and commenting. Chris
i were looking at that plant fossil chris other month when i was up there..i thought of you as i was looking at it thinking youd be able to tell me exactly what it was..it is a unique shape penyghent & having been up several times i do like that climb up that side..great to see the flowers etc starting to bloom in the mountains etc looking forward to summer now..tfs mate.
Stigmaria is one you come across fairly often in the gritstone areas of the Pennines Andy.....though deffo seen it more in the Dales 👍. Plover Hill is nowt special but PYG is a real favourite. It was also my second ever 2000 footer so some good memories associated with it. Thanks for watching and commenting pal. ATB, Chris
Awesome 😎 as usual Chris like watching atomborough of the dales ,
Thanks Craig. So nice to get some nice weather. 👍
It's wonderful that you finally got some spring weather! The purple saxifrage were worth the trip! Wow, exciting that there two plants! I like that you find fossils along the way- that one looked huge. I don't know if I would recognize a coral fossil. Your camping spot looked great up against the stone wall there, maybe you got a little extra warmth from it. There sure were lots of people out enjoying the day... that was fun to see. Great views all around! Enjoyed the video! :) 👍👍
Yes it was! Thanks Jennifer. March was a dreadful month over here. The purple sax' occurs all around Penyghent on a limestone crag that circles most of the mountain. Unfortunately, most clumps are difficult to access. These are the best two I know. Thanks for watching and commenting. 🙂
@@ChrisJB They’re a wonderful color. We have one in the same family, I believe, called Prairie Star- doesn’t look similar at all - it’s an early bloomer and I’ve seen a few so far. Hope your weather stays nice!
Cheers Chris love the video and looking forward to more.
Thanks Marty. Best wishes, Chris 👍
Great Chris, really interesting and inspiring. Thanks for taking the time to put the detail in.
Hello Dave and thank you. It was a very very 'giving' walk this with lots of pleasing things to include. Hope you are well mate.👍
Really enjoyed this. I’ll definitely be watching more
Many thanks Mark. I appreciate that. 🙂
Nice camp and post Chris. One thing about that wind direction….it might blow through ya n not around ya but the vis is crystal. Love your obs of the flora n fauna of all your walks, it does put another dimension on everything you produce. I was fortunate in January to pop up to Horton on a day trip to see Hull Pot in fill. Absolutely remarkable phenomenon. We are so blest in the north of England to have such wonderful natural environments around us. I live in the lowlands on the old Humberhead levels and as a discerning person, can appreciate what our lowlands offer as well as our hills n dales n mountains have to offer. Keep posting and if ever you want to wildcamp in and amongst the lowlands, I can show you some wonderful sites and wild camping experiences. Not all wild amps have to be on the top of mountain although the views are probably better. Keep posting Chris….I always enjoy. Take care mucka.
Hello Ron and thank you. I'm very keen on wildlife and like to include anything half-decent I come across on my walks 🙂. Good on you seeing Hull Pot full....what a spectacle that must've been. You are absolutely right re wild-camps on hills. I'd definitely like to deviate away from that a bit. And will take you up on your kind offer sometime. I really fancy coastal camps as I love being by the sea. Over your way, the Yorkshire Wolds is another landscape I like so would give that a go too. I know the Humberhead Levels a bit, having visited a few nature reserves that way on. Places like Blacktoft Sands, Thorne Moors, etc. Bye for now, Chris
Love the start of spring, always so much promise of things to come. That is if the rain ever stops! Another lovely video, cheers. Roger
Me too Roger.....a long period ahead of decent weather, wildlife and countryside...hopefully! Thanks for the watch and comment. ATB, Chris
Nice Camp Chris, enjoyed that one although not that slit!! looked a nasty way to go. Cheers for sharing Steven
Cheers Steve. Aye, I find pot-holes freak me out a bit! 😬
great video as always chris, nice weather just roundt corner, atb ken.
Cheers Ken. Ready for some decent weather now. 🌞
Hi Chris. Looked a cracking trip! 24 hours clag free on Penyghent must be some kind of record 😁 Loved the saxifrage and the seething frog pool...and a bonus ring ouzel to finish up with! Great stuff👍
Cheers Des. Lots of nice springy wildlife to enjoy on this one. Just what I needed. ATB, Chris
How do Jepson (whats happen to your intro)😂. So much information in your videos I always look forward to one 👌. Hope you enjoy your week in pembroke, 🧐Try some lure fishing on Marloes sands 😉
How do Johnny. As for the intro, I thought I'd pressed record but for whatever reason it hadn't worked and when I pressed the button for it to stop, I actually pressed the record then! I do it a lot 🙄. I've only managed a couple of (lure) fishing trips (near St David's) because of bad weather and blanked both times 😭. I'll try and give Marloes a go next time. I'm desperate to get a bass.....I've only ever caught one.
@@ChrisJB There lots of good videos on youtube about Bass fishing, 🧐 What lures to use, what technigues to employ, what sort of ground your fishing over etc and most importantly what time of day you fish and what the tide is doing. Lots to consider 🤪 Good Luck 😉
@@Johnnygee10 You are not going to believe this Johnny but whilst the kids were bodyboarding etc at Whitesands this aft', I had a bit of a thrash about with the lures and caught a little 'schoolie' about a pound. Chuffed doesn't even come close. It certainly took the edge off losing a 19 quid lure....😬😭. I have watched a bit of Henry Gilbey on YT but should do more homework, yes. 👍
@@ChrisJB Chuff for you Chris 😎 hope you returned him safely 👍A few of things to say, Henry Gilbey is Nowt but a poser 🤨 I can recommend the fishlocker channel.and Cornish fihermans older videos ( before the air rifle shooting ) You don't have to spend lots of money on expensive lures (that being said i've spend a few bob over the years) Also love whitesand 😍😉
@@Johnnygee10 Thanks mate, yes returned. I do watch Fishlocker, I think he's really entertaining and knowledgeable. I like it he when he drags those giant lobsters out of them holes....I'd love to have a bash at that 👍. I might pick your brains some more next time I'm down this way if you don't mind? It sounds like you know your stuff. ATB, Chris
Take care scrolling to the beautiful mountain...
Thank you 🙂
Crackin vid Chris, look like a brilliant area 👌
It is Steven. It can get busy but that's because it's so nice. Thanks for watching and commenting. 🙂
Cracking views Chris. Much enjoyed as always.
Cheers Dan. ATB, Chris
This brings back memories of our route and climb up Pen-ye-ghent especially seeing limestones features. I bet you had a bit more scrambling to do with those camera angles. But marvellous breathtaking footage. Enjoyed sharing your experiences in wild camping and with good weather.
It is quite scrambly in places Shanita but there were all ages out enjoying it which was nice to see. I was glad of he peace when they all went home though. 🙂
A Proper dry camp at last!
Looked great Chris
Thanks for Sharing
ATB-Phill
How do Phill. Oh it was so nice to experience some sun. ATB pal. 👍
Wonderful....never a dull moment on your walks Chris...we were at Hull pot a day or two before it filled up the waterfall looked grand at the time.....Lovely to hear the Ring Ouzel..enjoy Pembrokeshire
Hello Steve. I would love to have seen Hull Pot full up. Pembrokeshire has been great. The weather hasn't been very kind but I do love it here.
Another belter Chris , March has been shite weather wise bar the odd day , great to see the purple saxifrage very nice. It’s been years since I have saw the mountain blackbird . Plenty of nice high walls to hide behind 👍 lovely area for a camp atb Dave ⛺️👍
Thanks Dave. I wonder if I was a bit mad going for such a popular mountain but managed to avoid the worst of it. I was chuffed with the ring ouzels as I don't see them often either. Bye for now, Chris
Smashing video Chris. Weather up there looked stunning. Not done penyghent for donkeys years and this bought back some brill memories. It’s great to see you out again. Big Frank wild camping…. Now that would be gold. Cheers Chris
Thanks Steve. Aye, I bet Frank could handle a big pack 💪🏿. I do like PYG and like to visit it reasonably often. Best wishes, Chris
Belting video Chris, them views were stunning and the weather 👊👍🥃
Thanks Chris pal👍. I was due a bit of decent weather! 🙏
When is Penygent not busy? It must have been so great to have it all to yourself after the crowds went home.
Hello Michael.....yes it was.....very unusual! ATB, Chris
Another excellent video Chris. I like your knowledge of the surrounding landscpae, wild life and the greenery. Keep the videos coming and I look forward to seeing more.
Cheers Ikram. It's a good area and it holds a lot of interest for me really. ATB, Chris. 🙂
Ayup, my favourite wildcamp spot that mate, I think you might be within a few metres of my last camp up their. Your night looked calmer than mine, I had a fair bit of wind, cracking video mate
Thanks Stu. Yep, it was a really enjoyable one this one. Nice conditions.
Do love your videos Chris especially for all the info you give. “what a way to go” haha. Looks like a rare camp without rain for you too 😜😂
Many thanks Kris. Yep, I was due a bit of nice weather for sure. 🙏
Cracking stuff Chris 👌
Cheers Ray. ATB, Chris
10 Park Drive! Ya showing your age there Chris 😂😂😂
Nice video pal.
Ha ha! When I was a lad the tabs of choice for the older folk were either Park Drive or Woodbines, whilst the young uns smoked B and H! My grandad was a Park Drive man. 😉
Grand film Chris, particularly enjoyed how you got the moon rising whilst putting up the tent, good shooting!
All the best Jase
Cheers Jase. I didn't notice the fast rising moon until I got round to editing! 🙂
Another top video Chris, I really look forward to your videos. You have a superb, comforting presentation style. Like yourself, March thoroughly depressed me, even The Daffodils looked like they'd rather not have flowered. Half way through April now and it still feels like the middle of bloody winter !!! I laughe at the 10 Park Drive line, my grandad smoked them by the barrow load. And I fully agree about Pen y Ghent, an awe inspiring mountain and fair play for getting the summit all to yourself. Penbrokeshire is another great county as well, had a couple of great family camps at Kiln Park near Tenby. Thanks, for the great video, already looking forward to your next adventure.
Hello Alan and thanks for the nice comment. Ha ha....yes, my grandad was a Park Drive man chap too. All things considered, he didn't do too bad off them, making it into his 80s! Yep, it's been a rotten spring. I'm a bit of a Pembrokeshire fan, I love the coastline here, though the weather this week has mostly been pretty wild. Bye for now, Chris
Hey Chris,
I'm in London, working, so no big telly. Will watch later on me phone, in a quiet corner of a pub.
👍Paul
Cheers pal....hope the ale is good. 🍻
@Chris J-B
Didn't find a quiet spot and got asked quite menacingly by a couple of gadges to turn it down. Shows I must be getting a bit mutton. 😳
I'm a complete ignoramus when it comes to flora but enjoyed your excitement at the saxifrage.
Video was a treat as always Chris and left me hankering for the hills.
Enjoy Pembrokeshire, lovely place.
Cheers, Paul
@@paulryan2081 Mutton....great expression that 👍. Thanks Paul. It's been a great week in Pembs. It's been a good few years since I was last here and I'd forgotten just how nice the coast is. ATB pal.
Lots to like there Chris, 10 Park Drive took me back, I love the walk up from other side too, park up near Dale Head Farm, I would never consider wild camping there with the crowds, but look like you had it just right, love the flowers and the birds, also the geology, we have a lot of common ground as I have been to Pembrokeshire many times, love it, love barafundle bay and love going to St.Govans Head, if you get chance nip to the Stackpole Inn, really nice, have a great time all the Best, Tito 👍
Yep, I thought insanity had struck when I opted for PYG but heading over to Plover Hill ensured a mostly peaceful time. Unfortunately, the weather has been pretty shite down here. I know Stackpole but would've liked to have made it to Barafundle as I've heard it's a splendid beach. It was better today though and we did a boat trip road Ramsey Island near St David's. My grandad was the Park Drive smoker, though my Uncle Jeff preferred Woodbines. 😉 Thanks for your continued support pal. 👍
@@ChrisJB years ago we went to the monastery on Caldey Island, hope your having a good one 👍
That’s was a lovely camp Chris and nice to see a photo of your Dad. Loved the saxifrage and the frogs. We didn’t see any frogs or spawn in the peaks last week I was surprised, but did see a lizard though. Enjoy your holiday in Pembrokeshire we used to go there a lot and even got married in St David’s. I’m off to Scotland on Sunday that’s the plan if I’m brave and fit enough for 2 weeks on st cuthberts way and the Scottish national trail. All the best 👍
How do Dave. Yep, my pa wasn't really a hiker, though loved nature and the countryside. He was pleased with himself after this one. We did manage one last hike before he died, up to Back Tor on the Derwent Edges from Cut-throat Bridge in 2020🙂. We love Pembrokeshire. We are staying close to St David's (the cathedral is magnificent) and today did a boat trip around Ramsey Island and then on to Whitesands Bay. These sort of family holidays work wonders for the soul. Overall, the weather hasn't been great this week though 😢. Have a good time up Scotland.
Best wishes, Chris 👍
You need to slow down, you rushed putting your tent up lol, only kidding, loving the content and scenery, that Sausahe Roll looked tasty 👍
Cheers pal. Yes, those big sausage rolls are a bit of a favourite at the mo. 👌
I agree, what a disappointing march that was weatherwise, on the upside I don't think I've ever seen the res's in the peak district as full. I went out for a drive and was up above high bradfield (outskirts of sheffield) the other day and the amount of lapwings and curlew was a joy to see....loads of them. Also, I might have been mistaken but I'm pretty sure I saw a Hen Harrier aswell, I don't think it could have been anything else how it looked and behaved. Thanks for another fantastic bit of content Chris, I look forward to everything you put out. Cheers, John.
Many thanks John. Yep, my local ressys are nice and full too. You have every chance of a hen harrier in and around the Dark Peak. Let's hope the gamekeepers leave it well alone. I know High Bradfield, I visited the church there once and had a swift pint in a nearby pub as I recall. 😉
That's the old horns pub, they do homemade hot pork scratchings and you can have apple sauce with them if you want, next time you're up there give em a try if you like that sort of thing....beautiful!!
More magical scenes. I was hoping though that you'd end up clinging on by your fingertips to a clump of purple saxifrage like our friend did of old.
The fool probably ripped out big clumps with his reckless ways. 🙁
Brilliant video right in my 'playground'. Been meaning to find another spot in the area for a 5* night under the stars.
Glad you stopped off at Hull & Hunt pot. They are really impressive in full flow.
It's a great area mate. I have lots of memories of Upper Ribblesdale. Thanks for the generous comment. 👍
Great Chris. Good to see you out again. I found that limestone scramble terrifying. I did it but had to concentrate on staying calm. Lost my head for heights years ago. It wasn’t the scramble so much as the exposure. The Millstone section was good. Anyhow, did it. Know what you mean re the weather. I’m off out probably Monday in the dales or Howgills. Super vid that mate. Loved the intro 😂
Cheers Uncle Pete. I'm okay with PYG though I do know what you mean. I'm always a little surprised on every visit just how scrambly it is. Shades of the Lake District maybe? Have a good un on Monday pal. 👌
Eyup Chris, limestone Dales always feels right homely to me, it's good to see new places but I get having a bit of familiarity too, it's good to get a good one in. Great video and awesome sausage roll, I doff my cap in admiration 👌 take care mate
How do Dave. I don't know what it is, perhaps early walking/camping trips with my pals when we were lads but this area is very special to me. I did wonder if PYG was a daft choice, what with the crowds but by the time they'd gone it really was tremendous. Thanks for watching and commenting mate. 👍
@@ChrisJB think thats what it is with me, had loads of weekends up there with the folks as a young en, even the smell of it is familiar. Strange that
Love them wild flowers Chris and equally love the sound of frogs in season - they're mesmerizing. It's good to know it's still cold on top. I haven't been able to get up to them heights so it's nice to see. I trust this trip dissipated some winter blues. Well, good going. Mark
The wildlife of this trip was a real mood lifter Mark. I'm not a winter person really (both my parents really struggled in the winter months so I guess it is in my genes!) and when it drags on well into spring I get very frustrated sometimes. We are currently by the sea in Wales and although we had a good day today, mostly conditions have been pretty wild. Best wishes, Chris
@@ChrisJB Hey, that's good to hear Chris - touched in the right place. When winter comes I just go into that space and allow my moods to be. I say, 'can't wish the wind away.' Good to hear you're in Wales. Hope the trip is good overall.
Great video Chris, that night sky looked incredible 👍🏻
Many thanks Stuart. Yep, the sky was better than I thought considering the moon was up. ATB, Chris
Absolute belter Chris! One of your best. Been meaning to check out this place. Summit camped last May on Ingleborough and it was pretty special, tempted to try it's 'cousin' here. One of your best trips this for the knowledge, love the insights on the flora and fauna 🙏 really top stuff! ATB, Nick.
Cheers Nick mate. Yes, it turned out to be a good one this. I have considered Ingleborough too but every time I've done Ingleborough the weather has been crap. I think I'm jinxed with that one! ATB, Chris
The ground under your tent looks lumpy. Is your mat sufficient to prevent you feeling the hills and dips? And those larger "pits" or whatever in the landscape, how are those formed? The deep trench made me think of Iceland - a bit mystical. Nice trip!
Hello Karen. It was quite lumpy but I have slept on worse. The mat I use is pretty good at absorbing them. The pits are probably sink-holes. Being limestone country they are a feature of the landscape. Best wishes, Chris
Beautiful quality video and an enjoyable hike! The flowers, the hills and the starts - all superb. I like it how you get to camp there. I've never wild camp like this at the tops. Must feel very special.
Many thanks Olga. I really recommend wild-camping....it's such a good way of really connecting with the landscape. 🙂
@@ChrisJB I should definitely try it sometime.
Excellent mountain, one of my favourite chris, did the 3 peaks about 5years ago, definitely on my wild camp list , thanks for sharing pal ,
How do Mark. Aye, I have a real soft spot for PYG.....so many memories wrapped up in this lovely mountain. 👌
10 Park Drive 😂😂😂 ... not heard of them for years mate 😊
I know! My Grandad Harold used to smoke 'em for fun....😉
The "rock" at 5:12 is a huge chunk of a pre-flood tree.
Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment 🙂. With regards to this rock, all I am seeing is a pretty bog-standard outcrop of Millstone Grit from the Upper Carboniferous. Best wishes, Chris
@@ChrisJB Is that what the placard says?
@@Outrjs No mate, I'm a geologist. 🙂
@Chris J-B Great. Go back and observe that giant piece of tree.
Yes, you will get a characteristic of stone. This is the kicker. All rock at one time was a tree. When a tree is melted by high intense heat than it melts.
The Devils Tower is a giant tree stump.
At the base is the bark of that tree.
Why do I believe it's bark? Because the trees had a fungus that the rocks at the bottom of the Tower had a well.
There was, in pre-flood times, massive trees. And those trees petrified under the salt water conditions.
It's a piece of a tree. Go back and just look at it. It's a piece of a branch petrified.
@@Outrjs Unfortunately I didn't find any evidence for what you describe. I guess we will have to agree to disagree. 👍
Another excellent video Chris, a question what is your make of pack is it a Atom Pack ???
Thanks Jeffrey. Yes, it's an Atom Packs Mo, 50L. ATB, Chris
Excellent video as usual. What settings do you use on your camera? Looks really high quality video
Thanks mate. The Go Pro I just use the standard settings on 2K (it's a Hero 10 and an improvement in image quality on the Hero 7 I had before. I also use a Sony ZV-1 which is great but the image stabilisation is not as good as the Go Pro. I find if the light is good, as they were on this trip, that really helps the image in both cameras. 🙂
Is is a fast frame rate as well? Very smooth footage
@@2rocship I'm not too genned up with frame rates but I think it's a fast one.
How’s the condensation in the notch in cold and damp conditions?
I'd say it's no worse than most tents in those sort of conditions. Overall I've been very happy with it. 🙂
so any one going’s up here please talk your shit home the fairys don’t climb to clean and bin man do not take away ! just some one like me who has climb down with plastic sack after bank hoilday with bin liner’s please spread the word the fairy do not clean the 3 peack when you leave it ! thank you ! if see people dropping pick up give them back ive stop walk up ome of the peack s because i can bear the litter ! sorry my friends it not you i have go at it the thoughless
Yep, I hate to see litter. Not only unsightly, harmful to wildlife too.
Sand boy did he say that
I did. I was feeling very jolly walking in decent weather and up one of my favourite hills. 👌
