Did the Seafoam fix last? Update on the Ford Ranger

  • A little over a year ago I used Seafoam and Lucas in the Ford Ranger. The engine was making a lot of noise. The gasoline engine sounded more like a diesel engine. After using Seafoam and Lucas, the engine sounded great! But did the fix last? In this video, we take a closer look at the ranger, looking inside the oil pan using a boroscope, checking the oil and filter for contamination, and checking the used oil for film strength. We also take the Ranger on a test drive. Hope you enjoy the video and thank you for supporting the channel! / projectfarm

@@ProjectFarm ... Been seeing a number of processes touted in the comments and replies. My own practice is to add a quart of cheap ATF to the crankcase a day or two before the oil change. Use the vehicle as usual, allowing The fluid in oil to wash the inside of the engine. Next day or so, change oil and filter. I like to use Valvoline Racing oil, normally, but in truth, most oils are perfectly fine for use in our older vehicles.

If you had first wrapped your magnet in plastic cling wrap, like you'd use on leftovers, or stuck the magnet inside a finger of a white latex glove; you could have removed the wrap from the magnet and been able to see the debris left behind much easier.
I learned that trick as a kid after I spilled BBs on a shag carpet. The wrap made the BBs MUCH easier to remove from the magnet! Now I keep a strong magnet wrapped in plastic wrap for picking up nuts, bolts and washers that get spilled on my shop floor.

The lucas replacing a quart of oil + seafoam at the recommended amount for the oil capacity will clear things up over a week or 2 of daily driving. Just found your channel. As a retired technician of over 45 years, I can attest to the strengths of Seafoam and Lucas products. Both are about the best out there, in their field. As I haven't read all your millions of comments, congrats on such a large base BTW, I don't know if anyone has told you that the 2.9L engine in your truck has a solid lifter cam in it from the factory, and there is an adjustment for them. You have to remove the valve covers, so if it's as quiet as it is in the vids, at this mileage I wouldn't touch it yet. The Seafoam did wonders to it. From seeing your initial vid on this as well, I saw how built up your throttle body is too. The gasket is only a couple bucks at the parts store, and removing the linkage and 4 bolts attaching it to the intake to use a plastic hard bristle toothbrush to scrub it while spraying it with Seafoam, will make your idle quality and throttle response like new. Just a long couple of points to add to your very nice production.

I have a question for you. I know you maybe biased towards those products. I currently own an 05 Civic EX with VVT (Variable Valve Timing). I've purchased the "Low Viscosity forumula" of Lucas as it's meant for VVT engine. My engine has a ticking sound & burns oil. I've been told to use "Rislone Engine Oil Treat (yellow bottle) or the Rislone Compression Repair with Ring Seal." I mainly want to tackle the oil consumption as the noise I can live with by cranking the music up. If I can hit both than that's even better.
My thing is, do you have experience with these products? If so, any thoughts on them? I've tried Lucas oil stablizer in the past & it seemed to have helped maybe an extra 1k miles before losing oil between changes. I usually do 5k oil changes. I also use HM oil 5w-20 & am against going higher as I'd like to stay with the manufactor reccomends. Maybe I'll try 5w-30, but dont se myself going high than that if need be. I know I said alot, but I'd like your opinion, thanks!

My best tip for helping keep metal shavings from wearing engine parts, is to put a large flat magnet, such as those that are on the back of stereo speakers, on the bottom of your oil pan. The magnet will attract and catch metal shavings preventing them from cycling back through your engine. Just remember to take the magnet off before an oil change so the shavings can drain out with the old oil.
The magnet trick also works when stuck to the bottom of your fuel tank, for keeping rust particles from getting from your fuel tank to the injectors or clogging up filters.

      @UnknownUzer 5 ปีที่แล้ว +38

@@davidpeters8813 I'm not aware of if,or what kind, of magnets are in a typical hard drive , but my guess is the it would have a small surface area. Also, people seem to be emphasizing the power of the magnets. I have to caution that just a moderate size/strength magnet is all that is necessary. Especially one that has some surface area such the flat round magnets 3-6 inches in diameter that come on the back of stereo speakers. Using strong magnets such as rare earth magnets could lead to cracking your oil pan/fuel tank if you have trouble pulling it free from the tank or you let it go and it makes harsh contact with the tank. The magnet just needs to be strong enough to hold itself in place and capture small metal shavings and/or rust particles through the floor of a thin walled oil pan or fuel tank.

From my experiences, even when you've done all the research in the world and considered all the influencing factors and the expected result appear to be black and white, the ACTUAL RESULTS can surprise.
Your methods and experiments definitively answer so many things I've often wondered. Plus I love the way you read the comments and readily take good advice, but you also don't get provoked if the common idiot criticizes something in the comments. Very refreshing! Keep up the BRILLIANT work mate, many thanks from 'Down Under' (For those who don't know..... that's Australia)

Around 5 years ago I saw your video where you added it to the oil on the Ranger... My 99 Corolla had a little rattle on the top end, and I tried it. Sure enough, it quieted down. Even since then, before every oil change I do, I dump a third of a bottle into the oil and drive around for 15 minutes or so.. the rattle is still gone, and it certainly can't hurt. So, seafoam in the oil for a drive before an oil change is a win in my book.

First of all, I would like to thank you for all of your extremely helpful and educational videos. I have been a huge fan of yours for many years now because I have always dreamed of doing exactly the things that you are doing on your videos but lack the technical and scientific attitude required. In fact, I was one of your earliest subscribers. You Sir are a “Unicorn” in this day and age on TH-cam and social media in general due to your independence, unsponsored and therefore unbiased testing methodologies, which is the primary reason I have been a loyal fan of your channel. I I am also impressed by your humility, and that you are willing to take suggestions and advice from your viewers, instead of acting as a perfect expert. I have always been extremely impressed and grateful that someone like you with over 2.8 million subscribers still conducts testing independently without any sponsors and without trying to sell or endorse products. You have managed to establish, increase, and maintain your credibility precisely by refusing sponsorship and endorsements.
Finally, I would like to add more sincere kudos to you being an American farmer. Farmers in America are one of our nation’s unsung heroes for centuries now. Many do not realize how fortunate and blessed we are to have hard-working people, and a country with nearly all the natural resources required to sustain our societies stability and continued prosperity.
I wish you continued success, and I really hope you will continue to remain independent and unbiased. I have learned so much from your channel and have increased my overall knowledge of the practical and skills that I have been able to use to help my family, friends, and the community that I am a member of. Thank you very much for all your efforts to to help make us, smart and well informed consumers.

After spraying the Seafoam in the hot engine I let the car sit for several days before driving it in order for the Seafoam to do it's best.

Hey man, got a pro tip for you. They make lots of funnel strainers for filtering debris when you're trying to find shavings, particles, etc. Or if you want to reuse a product (oil, coolant, etc) but don't want to dump dirt and debris back in an engine. But my tip isn't just the funnel strainers, but instead a close cousin. Go to any autobody supply store and they hand out dozens of 'one time use' paper/metal mesh paint strainers. They fit perfect in a funnel, you can throw them away, they're usually free, and they filter much finer (smaller micron) than some funnel strainers. Autobody paint guns are finicky so they need clean paint, and those strainers do just that. They also filter every other liquid product in my garage as well. Been watching you for years, and love your videos, sir.

It's amazing how technology has advanced... 20-30 years ago, you'd need a crew to get these shots. Now, a person can do it all on their own with the right tools.

Glad to see you do this, and echo others that say love this non-sponsored no-endorsements-or-promotions format. Would like to see you go with the engine restorer you used on the tractor after getting the sludge out and during the next oil change.

I use TH-cam for a variety topics. everything from technology to home remodeling and auto repairs. its amazing that almost everything I've been searching in the last 6months has had your videos show up as the top results. you do an amazing job, right to the point, cover all the points! and of course the no sponsor ship, is refreshing. I cant say how much time I've waste watching videos to find out they our bias/sponsored!!

I’ve really enjoyed all your videos. This one and the first part we’re awesome. I was already a fan of Seafoam but when I watched the first video with the ranger it occurred to me Seafoam was my solution.
I have a 2013 Chevrolet Traverse with a 3.6L v6. It had a noticeable issue under power that is attributed to the cam shaft actuators not function properly. These engines have a known issue with oil deposits blocking oil passages. This often results in a failure of the hydraulic timing chain tensioner and ultimately the timing chain fails, which results in a total loss of engine.
I added Seafoam at the beginning of an oil change. I forgot I had done this. A month later I drove this vehicle for the first time since adding Seafoam (my wife’s daily driver and I don’t drive it often) when entering the highway it occurred to me “ah that dreaded sound/vibration” to my surprise it was completely gone! Thank you for your great videos, they have answered so many great questions and have likely saved me a $2000 repair bill / lost engine.

Your videos are extraordinary. So many different camera angles and areal shots. It must take a lot of work. Congratulations, well done.
