    Just did the seafoam "3 way treatment" (in the gas, in the crankcase, and sprayed into the intake) to both my son's 2010 Equinox and to my 2010 Expedition. The difference was astounding - I was very impressed with the Seafoam and will use it again.

    • @terran2kk
      @terran2kk 2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      putting Seafoam in the crankcase can lead to costly repairs, usually whatever it loosen has a habit of clogging oil passages, especially the ones that feed your main bearings.

      @Lu Ms it breaks it down and carries it through the exaust, if it does get stuck in the exhaust it doesnt matter since it wouldnt effect performance at all

    • @zenaxia8063
      @zenaxia8063 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Lu Ms most exhaust systems are pretty thick in diameter, so theres alot of space for air to travel through it regardless of carbon build up, carbon build up hurts the engine performance usually when its inside of the cylinder because it messes with the firing of the actual engine, it can get in the fuel injectors and even on the tips of the spark plugs. This is a very condensed space, and seafoam should get the carbon build up out of the cylinder through the headers and through the exhaust, sometimes it can get stuck somewhere in the process however, but generally it doesnt, and if it does, it will just move onto the long exhaust pipe in which it wouldnt end up losing as much performance as if it was actually hurting firing time or the other engine components, so to answer your question, yes, it can, but its not supposed to. To answer your second question, if you have more than one exhaust tip and its thicker than the bananna can fill, then yes it would decrease performance, but in most higher performance exhaust systems, it wouldnt effect performance much, and this example doesnt work here because carbon is incredibly small, it would not build up to the size of a bannana.

    Used this on my just purchased, 20 year old prelude (150K mi). Before using it, I had no oil leaks. I used it and it cleaned out a whoooole bunch of nastiness, but it cleaned it out so much, that several gaskets started to leak oil (I assume the built up oil was plugging the holes). It runs much better, now that I replaced a whole bunch of rubber in the engine. I'm glad I was able to find all the leaks and fix them, but be warned that if you're doing this on an older car, there's potential for new leaks. But the car definitely appreciated the cleaning and all new gaskets!

    Chris, I really liked the video. I have to say, that I am not convinced that the SeaFoam did a lot of good.
    If at all possible, I'd like to see the results of using straight water injected into the intake, like the SeaFoam was, to see if that would clean off some of the carbon build up. The reason being, I have pulled cylinder heads off of cars that had head gasket leaks, and the cylinders that had coolant leaking into them were very clean. I think steam cleaning your intake with water can have the same results.

      +Robert DIY Actually, 90% of them have clean pistons. Most cars today have clean engines. Even the old engines! Plus I need the car for a few days. Getting the right angles with the camera takes a lot of time!

      Well that's good to know. I know that most of the heads I pull reveal clean piston tops. Usually the carbon is in the intake ports and the bottom side of the heads, bottom of the exhaust valves.
      I thought the camera was easier to work with. At any rate, you're doing an awesome job helping people understand what's going on around their vehicles. Please keep it up.

    I've been wondering about this for forever now but the Shell gas station claims that shell V power can clean your engine of carbon build ups and gunk up to about 80% in just the first fill up. You should creat a video and see if shell V power (premium gas) cleans as well as they claim. My wife and I argue every time we will up if it's worth the extra money to fill up with V power just because they claim it's so great for you let vehicle. It would just be very interesting to see the results.

      Steven Christen the only thing you need to understand about gas is the octane rating is all that matters. All gas require cleaners in them. Put in the gas your car manufacturer recommends unless your engine has been modified in any way to operate at a different ratio.

      @arnemaeschaelck5012 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Steven Christen yeah I don't believe that. also, I don't know where you at, but in some states in the U.S., Shell V power is equal to regular gas in Europe (whether it's a Shell gas station or not).
      V Power in Europe is 98 oct RON (or 94 US octane), but in the UK I've seen 97 RON advertised as V power, in some countries I've seen 99… Some countries even have Shell "race" gas (100+ oct RON).
      Over here, regular gas (U.S. 91) contains 10% ethanol and premium contains nothing extra. Just unleaded gas.
      Don't fall for it, though… premium gas in a car that doesn't require it, and this seafoam crap… it's bullshit. Just fill your car up with the gas it needs and maintain your car probably and it'll run as long as it can.

    After watching all your videos on this subject it would appear that surviving combustion is the most important aspect of any of these cleaners for piston tops. For example seafoam is mostly pale oil that was used as an upper cylinder lube years ago. It allows the naptha, which is the primary detergent to survive long enough to clean the piston tops. So for your test it's the most likely to show visible results. Agree?

    This might be better to show on a car that's really dirty.
    The aggressive driving is an old trick I used on my 82' Trans am and even my modern cars. Just drive like an a-hole for a day and you'll notice the next day you car is running better because you burned out the carbon. This must be why BMW drivers always have clean pistons XD

      If you've got enough carbon that it messes up your engine so a cleaner actually makes a difference you're just masking bigger problems by using it. I've tried stuff like STP and lucas fuel treatments and didn't notice any difference in performance before and after. Whether or not they cleaned any carbon or anything like that I can't say. Like I said though, to get your engine gunked up that bad to where seafoam makes a big difference you've got much bigger problems that need fixing.

      Yeah, I am thinking the movie Envy, where Jack Black's character invents Vapoorize, an aerosol that just makes dog poo disappear... It's definitely a good idea to ask these questions :P
      I would actually be somewhat reluctant to use this product in a high performance engine where tolerances are less lenient(the honda kinda qualifies). Some of the carbon deposits appear to have come away in quite large pieces, that could potentially scratch the bore or block up the tiny "capillaries" in your catalytic converter.

    Hey Chris the best way to get rid of carbon is carbon gasification. Here is the chemistry. 3C (i.e., carbon) + O2 + H2O → H2 + 3CO. The problem is how do you get water into the engine. You have to spray it into the throttle body. It doesn't take much water to clean out the engine. Please try this and compare it to the fuel cleaning products. I used Seafoam in my 1995 Chevy S10 when it had about 20,000 miles on it. I went from using no oil from 3000 mile oil change to 3000 mile oil change, to burning a quart of oil every 200 miles. I thought that I ruined my truck engine. Miraculously, and for reasons I don't understand, the usage eventually decreased and I went back to not using oil again. Fast forward 280,000 miles, I completely forgot my old Seafoam experience and used it again. The same thing happened. My mechanic and I both surmised that the usage was related to all of the oil drips at the bottom of the 280,000 mile engine. I considered junking the truck. I added oil as needed and changed the oil, and the same thing happened. The oil usage went away again, Not back to zero like before, but I'm low not quite a quart at he 3000 mile oil change again. My advice: Don't use additives! Not in your gas, in your oil, in your coolant, in your tranny or air intake. Wait until a part needs replacement and replace it.

Oh wait, you do know Henry Ford just invented the assembly line, right? We are talking about something from 100 years ago.
      GM took a multi billion dollar bail out of American tax payers' money just a few years ago. They went bankrupt because they make pure garbage. But instead of survival of the fittest, they took money to keep producing junk.

    you should check for carbon in the intake manifold, throttle body and all those parts of the intake to the inlet valve. specially in diesel engines can build up there a whole lot of deposits which restricts air flow and also harms the turbo to spool up. i remove them as much as possible by hand, then i use a spray cleaner like you did and after this i burn free the DPF using OBD diagnostic tool. This will give the best results and noticeable more power (TDI engines). those deposits on top of the piston are not verry responsible for the engine.

    Hi Chris, this is what I do every 10K miles. I mix up a fuel system cleaner which is a gallon and a half of fluid. One quart of Acetone, M E K, Lacquer thinner, Zylol, 100 percent Isopropyl alcohol, and two cans of Berryman gas treatment.
    I mix this in a empty 2 gallon gas tank. I run my gas tank low and fill the tank with straight gasoline and the mix I described. In just one gas tank the engine gets cleaned well including the fuel system. Works for me fella. Give it a try, works really well. A old timer mechanic showed this to me years ago.
    Peace vf

    Better than pulling the heads to scrape the pistons, but overall, Not Impressed.
    Cleaning relatively insignificant for the bother.
    (And for 120k, those pistons were quite clean. Back in the days of leaded gas, the buildup after 50k would be 10x worse --- BTDT)
    Also impressed that you didn't show any significant cylinder wear. You should have had very significant, blatantly noticable ledges near the top of the cylinder walls with 120k on the engine.

      +loadi2 On older engines yea... But the manufacturing tolerances on newer engines are so tight that they account for piston swell and modern oils further reduce wear. The lack of carbon build up is result of more efficient fuel delivery and ignition not to mention EPs regulated gasoline refinement to reduce emissions. Overall nothing unexpected unless you have been under a rock past 20 years.

    True story experience of sea foam spray: I tried this on my dad's 06' BMW 750li. Inserted product while raising RPMs. Drove aggressively. He stated that while driving, it gave NO power. Car drove like dog$hit. I felt terrible. Car had to be limped back home practically. He took the next day off work to get a tow. He told me that upon starting the car it fired up and ran like a top. That was great news to hear after thinking I killed his car.
    So anyway I'm gonna try the product in my 87 b2000 FE3 swap. My only guess in his case is the plugs got soaked or maybe a sensor got tripped...that car is loaded in sensors. Mine, less so.
