Greetings Captain. Fellow PBS Kids enjoyer from my youth here. I'd like to contribute to the discussion here with some lost media for the station I'm familiar with - Bill Nye The Science Guy.
Back in the 90s, my folks taped like 9 assorted episodes of the show (which ran on our local PBS provider, WNED) for me onto a VHS. We didn't have anything beyond basic cable, so I watched the hell out of these 9 episodes (Do It Yourself Science, Populations, Locomotion, Earthquakes, Measurement, Patterns, Pollution Solutions, Space Exploration, and Architecture), and got to know them pretty damn well.
However, the versions that are offered for home distribution, from VHS to DVD to even streaming, are a bit different than the broadcast versions, seeming to be about 3 - 5 minutes shorter on the whole for each of them. Entire sequences are either removed or heavily cut down, music is changed, interviews and experiments are removed, even opening bits introducing the episode are altered. (For example, in the broadcast version of Earthquakes, Bill balances a heavy glass ball on a seesaw in Nye Labs, and comments how it'll stay there just fine providing nothing bad happens like an earthquake. Que earthquake. In the only version that seems to exist out there, Bill is seen mixing two chemicals and making a similar comment about how it's mixed perfectly and went great, providing nothing crazy like an earthquake happens. Que earthquake. There's many such examples like this for many of the episodes.). And entire experiments can end up being removed. Like in the Do It Yourself Science episode, an entire experiment kids are encouraged to try with their parents at home, the classic "baking soda and vinegar volcano" is just cut, same with another about how to make a periscope with mirrors and an old milk carton.
Now, I understand this is largely likely due to copyright and distribution rights management. When the show hit Netflix years back, many complained that a scene in one of the episodes regarding gender was altered, and accused Bill or Netflix of altering the content of the show as a form of censorship - but the actual reason, and by extension I think the reason that nearly every episode is missing a few minutes of footage, was due to rights management issues. Getting a hold of actors/actresses involved in scenes to get permission for home and digital distribution, as well as copyrighted music (Populations used "Tiptoe Through The Tulips" by Tiny Tim, and Patterns used "Turn, Turn, Turn" by The Birds - and no I'm not referring to the parody songs or anything, those survived untouched actually) - so instead of going through the bullshit, they just cut them instead.
Which leaves me in a difficult spot. This tape I have from my childhood, with all my proof on it, I've had a lot of difficulty finding. It's supposedly hopefully somewhere in my parents' basement, but it may have been thrown away against my will without my knowledge. Which would be a shame because aside from a few scant clips of some alternate opening sequences, there's next to no evidence or proof out there to back up my claims, and I feel that I'm the only person who cares this much and knows the things I do about these things and these couple of episodes - and I gave you the short version!
So if this is of any form of interest to you or know anyone to point me to or anyone that can help or anything whatsoever, it'd be appreciated. This is a huge part of my childhood that's pretty much inaccessible, since very few people seem to recall these specific broadcast versions, especially because I believe they never hit store shelves in that form.
SOME of these scenes are available as "bonus footage" on the DVD, but it's not all of them, they are separated from the episode, and scenes edited for music copyright are not among them. Here's a good example, the content shown here was part of the episode in the television version, but was removed and made as a bonus in home releases. And in none of these cases do they cover all of it, but it's proof positive that this stuff exists - th-cam.com/video/KIkv8wlxJ_k/w-d-xo.htmlsi=xukl3ZvxUCgI9QN6
Thanks to anyone who takes any time whatsoever to read this too. I've been trying to get to the bottom of this and hopefully maybe see those uncut unaltered episodes some day. It's really important to me. Here's hoping maybe a comment like this in the right place might stir up enough discussion among the right people.
Cheers, thanks for your time and any possible response.

Another piece of lost media for Sesame Street are the four additional test pilots that followed the first one. Also, Mister Rogers is missing its Springtime special from 1978(?) as well as its preceding "Misterogers" 1960s TV series before the national version we all know began airing in 1968.

‪Idk if this counts as lost media but me my sister vividly remember this one ad on pbs kids that we saw as a kid that scared us so bad, it was an ad that had white background with (read-a-roo) the mascot for pbs kids sitting on the right reading a book, there was no sound like literally no sound you could hear the grain of the old tvs ,there was black text about or next to the mascot that said “be sure to hug your little ones tighter tonight.” It scared us bc it was so quiet and only aired at night I think it was aired the same night as the sandy hook shooting and I remember it only being aired again one other time. Ive never been able to track it down ‬

Mr. Rogers also had two different specials that aired in prime time, both on the devastating topic of assassination.
The 1968 one made in response to RFK is the most well-known example, even though the special in it's entirety is not available for public viewing.
But there was an even more obscure special from 1981 made in response to the death of John Lennon, attempt on Ronald Reagan, the Pope, etc. Footage of Rogers talking to viewers from that special is posted on this site, but the entire rest of the special including it's bizarre NOM story (about an apparently anthropomorphic tree known only as "the Walking Talking Tree" killing another tree) remains lost.
A Neighborhood fan named Degeneration X The Owl once had a detailed description of the special.

My home state has a mostly found lost show called "My Bedbugs", which you might recognize as the inspiration behind Oogieloves (Yes, THE Oogieloves that almost won Worst Picture at the Razzies.). It's not a very good show, but it's noteworthy for being Michigan's main controbution to PBS Kids. Though, trust me when I say, there are better shows from Michigan on PBS that are more worth watching than My Bedbugs, such as Under the Radar, and maybe catching an archive of Quizbusters episodes.

Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego had a lost episode. Lynne Thigpen was out sick so Greg Lee had to fill in for her, and the host of Nickelodeon’s Double Dare series hosted the show. During the map segment, a kid got hurt while running across the map. It was a disaster. It is said that episode aired once, but never again, or maybe it never aired after all. Or maybe the whole thing was a fake. I don’t know. See what you can do with that, Captain Rutledge.
