  • The sabre is a dynamic and fascinating weapon. While the basics are fairly easy to grasp, it can take a lifetime to master the diversity of techniques that this weapon is capable of performing. In this video, originally aired at HAMAA's 2021 Gathering, Council Member Adam Myrie shares some exercises and combinations that you can use in your sabre training.

From what source are you interpreting these techniques? What is your method of interpretation? I'd be interested to study them in comparison the similar HEMA weapon sources.

Great question! Because of a scarcity of sources available in English, we pull from a multitude of areas. Our main foundation is El Matreg, a living stickfighting art from the Maghreb. Exercises are also adapted from Modern Tahtib, a stick fighting art from Egypt. Next is what we can derive from available English translations from Nihayat al-Sul and Kitab al Mazkhun Jami al Funun. We also look at similar systems like Razmafzar or Turkic sabre because they all have related influences.
Everything else is trial and error through sparring and making a note of what works and what doesn't, then turning it into an exercise or combination.
This way we can cobble together the best approximation of what we think it would have looked like and how it would have functioned
