    Hello, thanks for the video. I am attempting to do the adjustments but I am unsure about what you are turning clockwise and what you are turning counter clockwise. In the video it looks like you are turning the same screw both times. What you say is to turn the middle screw on the gear clockwise and the gear counterclockwise? How do you turn the gear counter clockwise?

    Good day and thanks for the video, do you have the video about fixing stuck slow shutter speeds on the same models? And also please advice what to do on a Canon 7s, one part of the frame is slightly darker than the other, i suppose one of the curtains need adjustment, thank you so much!

    • @japanvintagecamera8869
      @japanvintagecamera8869  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Making adjustments is easy if you have access to an older CRT television. The screen refresh rate is usually 60HZ, so when you fire the shutter while looking through it at a CRT screen, you can easily tell by the pattern what the shutter speed is, and also spot capping. There are some guides on the internet showing the patterns, you adjust the curtain tension by turning the lock nuts and screws under the bottom cover.

    Hi. I really appreciate your videos. Thank you. I have a Canon P where the slow shutter speeds (1sec to 1/8) are very accurate, but starting at 1/15th of a second they are faster than they should be and not consistent. For example, 1/1000 fires at anywhere between 1/2000 and 1/3500. I'm using a PhochronXA shutter speed tester to measure the speeds. Would adjusting my shutter tensioner, like you did in the video, solve this issue? Thanks again!

    Re the port cover for the vertical adjustment, I struggled with tweezers etc. until I finally took a wide jeweler's screwdriver that I didn't need and filed down the blade into two points that fit the holes in the port cover. What's the special tool you use for these (the one you didn't show?)

    • @japanvintagecamera8869
      @japanvintagecamera8869  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used a pointed spanner which adjusts wider or narrower. These covers can be easy or hard to remove, depending on the camera. The best tool is the one you fabricated, I have a few such homemade tools for cameras I commonly work on.

    Hey thank you for this video! I have the same issue and I will try and fix it this week, seems like a simple solution. One question though! Why use lighter fluid for lubrication? Does WD40 also do the job? Thanks!

    • @japanvintagecamera8869
      @japanvintagecamera8869  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You should not use oil in the more precise mechanisms of a camera, the oil tends to travel to places where it gums or jams up things. It is better to have no lubricant than the wrong lubricant, or too much lubricant. Graphite powder works well, and speciality oils used for watches and precise mechanisms. Both can be found on Amazon or eBay.

    Hello, very helpful videos! I have a Canon 7s with a shutter that caps at 1/500-1000, is the procedure the same as the 7 to access the curtain tensioning gears? Also its film advance needs an extra small stroke to fully cock shutter and advance film - is that a simple fix?

    • @japanvintagecamera8869
      @japanvintagecamera8869  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The method is the same. As for the shutter stroke, that can be a more difficult issue to fix, the timing is adjustable, but requires more disassembly.

    What do you do if the gear post is before the 6 o clock position? (Instead of being a bit left it’s a bit to the right) mine is having a light leak on the left side of the frame. I assume the Shutter is not closing all the way but my post is a little before the 6 o clock position instead of a bit after like your example.i know there is a shutter adjustment towards the top side of the camera that requires the front to come off which I would hopefully want to avoid.

      The intermediary shaft which actuates the flash sync probably needs lubrication. You need to remove the bottom cover, you can find the shaft as it is the only one with wires near it. A drop of thin oil underneath should get it working again.

    I have one with the self timer stuck and the shutter button stuck. Any advice?

    • @japanvintagecamera8869
      @japanvintagecamera8869  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your comment. The first thing to check is that the shutter is fully closed, and that there is not a gap on the left side if you are looking through from the back of the camera. Next is to make sure that the selector ring around the shutter button is see to A and not R. If neither of these are the problem, the self timer may be stuck. To free it up you need to remove the self timer lever by removing the nut and lifting the lever off, then removing the 3 screws which hold on the nipple which support the lever. There are two spacers underneath with slots, don't lose them. Then remove the 4 screws around the lens mounting flange, lift it off carefully, take care with the spacers underneath, they must go back on in the same place they came off. Then remove the two screws behind the lens flange and spacers. Then take off the 4 black screws on the front of the camera. Open the film door, and you can remove the entire housing from around the camera. You will then see the self timer mechanism below where the self timer lever goes. Apply a few drops of lighter fluid, and depress the shutter button a few times. Add a few drops to the slow speed mechanism on the bottom of the film chamber. Reassembly is the opposite of reassembly.

    Do all these cameras have a different mechanisms for 1 sec? Mine seems to work fine on the other speeds but one sec is very much delayed.

    • @japanvintagecamera8869
      @japanvintagecamera8869  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is only one slow speed mechanism. It can be adjusted, but that is not such a simple job. At slower speeds there is a lot of leeway in the speed. For mechanical shutters you will get good results if they are within 1/2 stop of the correct shutter speed. At 1 second, this means a delay of up to half a second, which is quite a noticeable delay.

    My Canon P rangefinder has a vertical alignment issue. Any hints about what might cause this? Is it fixable?

    • @japanvintagecamera8869
      @japanvintagecamera8869  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is very easily fixable. If you look at the front of the camera you will see the round rangefinder window. It is surrounded by a knurled ring, remove this ring by turning it to the left. Underneath is a glass lens in a metal ring with a slot on either side. Turning this glass by using a screwdriver to push the slot/s one way or the other adjusts the vertical alignment.

    I can't find anything on how to adjust the high-speed shutter speeds. With mine, if the tension is too low, the shutter gets stuck at 1 sec. So I adjusted it just until it doesn't get stuck anymore. But now, on my high speeds, 1/1000 the shutter fires but doesn't open at all. Basically everything from 1/1000 to 1/250 is too fast.

    • @japanvintagecamera8869
      @japanvintagecamera8869  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You can adjust the speeds by changing the shutter curtain tension. Either the leading curtain is too slow, or the trailing curtain is too fast. The curtain adjustment screws are located under the bottom cover. The best method to use to adjust them is to use an tv screen, there are lots of tutorial on the internet showing how to do it.

    • @antinox
      @antinox 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@japanvintagecamera8869 thanks for reply. I ended up having to balance the shutter curtain tension as close as possible until the high speeds were accurate and then use the slow speed adjuster on top to fine tune. Turning the concentric spacer there even the smallest amount, changes the timing by quite a lot. For now I just got it as close as I could to another cameras shutter. For slow speeds I took a video with my phone at 60fps and then counted the frames in a video editor.

    • @japanvintagecamera8869
      @japanvintagecamera8869  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@antinox Keep in mind that the margin of error for shutter accuracy for mechanical shutter is 30%. You won't notice a 30% difference at higher speeds, but it is noticeable at slower speeds, and a shutter which is running 30% slow will sound much slower than you think it should be, but is still accurate enough for a good exposure.

    This is not the correct way to fix the issue of slow or sticking shutters.
    All that has been done here is to wash the dirt elsewhere and increase the shutter curtain speeds - to what will be now unknown and inaccurate - and increase the wear on the curtains and mechanism.
    So now that camera has potentially unmatched curtain speeds and inaccurate shutter speeds.
    There are speed adjusting processes shown in the service manual.
    What really needs doing is to fully service the shutter mechanism, cleaning all of the dirt out and re-lubricating in accordance with the service manual.

    Thanks for the video. I have a question about my canon p. When I use a flash with the red 'x' sync speed on my canon p, I always get a dark area on the side of my film. The dark area is on the edge of the frame not in the middle and all the other shutter speed sound good to me. It seems that the 'x' speed is faster than it should. Do you think that this method could fix the problem? or there might be some other issues with the flash sync system? Thank you!

    • @japanvintagecamera8869
      @japanvintagecamera8869  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your message. You can time the flash sync contacts under the bottom of the cover. The intermediate gear which I described how to fix also contains the cam which operates the flash synch switch, you should be able to advance or delay the flash actuation by changing the gap between the contacts. Narrowing the gap will make the flash fire sooner, opening it will make the flash fire later, but it take some experimentation to get it just right. I hope you can get it fixed.
