How to EASILY Retrieve a Film Leader End from 35mm Canister in 3 Different Ways

    In this video I demonstrate three different ways how to retrieve or get the leader end back out of your roll of 35mm film canister that has been rewound back in to the canister. In all cases, you're going fishing!
    The 3 methods shown in the video are:
    1. Using a "film picker" or "leader retriever" tool
    2. How to use double sided tape
    3. How to use a wet a negative strip
    -
    Sequence for each method:
    0:40 Using a retriever tool
    1. Hold the retriever so the smaller flexible tongue is on top
    2. Slide the large back tongue into the canister
    3. Slide the top smaller tongue in, but in the retracted position
    4. (Make sure the rigid back shoulder overlaps the canister)
    5. Hold the roll to your ear and spin CCW until you hear a click
    6. Keep tension on the spool at that point
    7. Release the tension as you slowly pull the leader out
    2:17 Using double-sided tape
    1. Take an old flat negative a few inches long
    2. Cut a section of tape and place it at one end of the negative
    3. Insert the negative tape side into the canister (about 1")
    4. Slowly roll the inner spool CCW until it pulls the strip in
    5. Keep tension on the spool at that point
    6. Release the tension as you slowly pull the leader out
    4:47 Using a wet negative
    1. Take an old flat negative a few inches long
    2. Lick or wet one end of the negative
    3. Insert the negative tape side into the canister (about 1")
    4. Slowly roll the inner spool CCW until it pulls the strip in
    5. Keep tension on the spool at that point
    6. Release the tension as you slowly pull the leader out
    Things to watch out for:
    - If you use the 'wet negative' method, use a different section for a new roll. (I just cut back the wet slobbered-on part to a dry area).
    - Don't use thick double-sided tape, but instead a thinner scotch tape or "Frost King" window sealing tape works well.
    Happy fishing!

    Hi there. I'm Chris. Film is more fun is a place where I share about whatever busted up old camera I'm currently shooting and tinkering with, or my meanderings in film photography. It would be pretty rad if you said what's up. I'm 99% friendly. Definitely do that. Disclaimer: If you want technical proficiency go watch 'The Art of Photography' (love that show). These videos are more like an elderly person navigating a tv clicker.

    I am new to the hobby so when my camera rewind knob wasn’t turning, I didn’t notice anything wrong. Then when my film was done rewinding in one second that’s when I knew I’d messed up. Thanks for this video. Saved me a roll.

    We have watched so many videos but this one was to the point. The point that you need to lock the film canister in that location was the key takeaway. Kudos.
    Many many thanks for making this informative video.

    The tape method (w regular double-sided tape) worked better than the leader retriever I just bought /eyeroll One thing I might try is to trim the sprocket holes right at the end so you can get the leader you're inserting into the light trap a little more easily. Thanks for sharing this.

    I messed up winding the film onto my plastic Patterson reel- so I had to wind the film back into the canister but ended up winding all of it back in…needless to say I done goofed, and my two film retrievers refused the help me retrieve the film leader back out (maybe because it was cut? Not sure why it didn’t grab it) anyway I thought I was going to have to ‘break in’ into the canister itself and risk damaging part of the film…anyhoo, you totally jurist saved me with the film negative and sticky tape technique! I can’t thank you enough- especially since this roll is pretty important. You rock man, I enjoy all your videos 🎉

    After failing trick #1 with the retrieval tool (the tool appears to be defective) I found that Trick #2 also works great with a small splash of 3M Remount Spray on one Side of the Piece of Film.
    It can then be a little difficult to get the film through the light seal, but it grips so cleanly the first time that the film inside can be pulled out cleanly.
    What is particularly cool is that the film strip prepared with 3M Remount can be used several times until the adhesive effect wears off and either new spray has to be applied or the entire strip has to be replaced.

    • @filmismorefun
      @filmismorefun  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a great idea!

    • @baselifter
      @baselifter 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@filmismorefun what I just found out through tinkering around also works well is a strip cut out of a beer can and sprayed with 3M Remount. This should have made the Kaiser tool unnecessary. If you want to make a video about it, go ahead. Take it as a gift, on your input that you gave me with this video.

    I just used the lick-trick on one. At first it didn't work, it just wouldn't grab. But then I figured why. - I used the other side and it turned out to be what I think it was; You need to wet the side with the emulsion, that's what will make it stick. The other side will just end up being wet slippery plastic, not sticky. - I still taste the emulsion after a quick lick, though... Dumb idea. I'll just use a finger, like I just did, next time. - But it does work!

    If the film retriever is not working, it could be that the barbs that grab the sprocket holes have been pressed flat. Just raise them with a nail.

    Man, I lost my film retriever and stores are closed. The double sided tape just didn't work for me, I could never get it to pass the velour seals of the magazine, but oh gosh, I just reversed the film strip end and sucked on it both sides and *_Bob's your uncle!_* twisted the spool two three times and then pulled on the film strip and, _voilá_ 1/4" of leader appeared miracously! A PITA for processing film routinely but sure, beats opening the mag with a bottle opener inside the dark-bag --*_took down the darkroom 15 years ago and gone hybrid._* Process film, then scan. I just wait for the night, load the tank and prepare the chems. Next day I'm doing digital contacts and scanning. Beats hitting the planet with tons of dumped silver halydes, selenium, KRF, etc. Baryta FB paper looks exactly like Ilford MG-IV/FB and is ecologically sound!
    Thanks a bunch for the deliverance; I was about to reach for the bottle opener! 🤣

    I have that exact black retriever, I have tried it on several rolls of film, it does not work for me.

    • @filmismorefun
      @filmismorefun  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When mine was new it was easy to use and grabbed the film quick. Now that it's older it works less effectively. I mostly use the 'lick the negative' method as that almost always nails it on the first try. 🙂

      @@filmismorefun I got mine from a friend, it is badly crimped, he has no finesse, he recently scratched a 16MP full frame Canon while trying to get rid of one tiny spot on the sensor.

    Yep licking it worked...at the risk of being thrown off here...I got my girlfriend to lick it...no joke it does work....I used the darker side of another roll of film, just licking the leader of it....It gets tackie for some reason...then dries out and then it dont stick..this is SO COOL.

    do you have any advice for a cannister that doesn't produce a 'click' with you rewind it?

    • @filmismorefun
      @filmismorefun  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Try to go by feel and see if you can sense the end of the rotating leader. All the click is is the leader end hitting the inside of the canister after it passes the slot. I hope that helps!

    • @filmismorefun
      @filmismorefun  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can try to form it back into shape with your hands, but sometimes if they crease too bad you need to replace it. I've found they're not as rigid after crumpling, unfortunately.

    Hi, I got a film roll keychain and I pulled the whole film out of it. Do you know how to put it back to the canister?

    • @filmismorefun
      @filmismorefun  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You would have to remove the top ring and pull out the center spindle, then tape the film back onto the spindle.
      The top ring may be hard to get back on though, especially if it gets bent during removal.
      I hope that helps!
