Merrick's Cutlass is a harpoon. It looks like its supposed to be a harpoon that is used as a sword (Love the fishing themed stuff). The style roughly based on older 19th century whailing harpoons, which makes sense as the Sea of Thieves is based on that general time frame.
The golden age of sail was around at the start of the 18th century, not the 19th. Past 1750, you could consider piracy as being already well on its way out. I really don't know much at all about harpoons, but I would presume the design can't have really changed overtime?

12:15 Okay but there’s one good thing about this sword. You can see your friend is using the sovereign cutlass, equip this thing, and tell them your sword is bigger.
The red on the Admiral cutlass might be emulating the cloth liners sometimes seen on basket-hilted swords in real life. It's shaped a bit wrong (the metal of the hilt still needs to be actually connected to the blade if you want it to work as a sword), but the overall impression is very "Scottish broadsword". Also, none of the "rapiers" in-game are actual rapiers; they're more accurately termed smallswords or foils, basically barbecue skewers with hilts. A true rapier is an inch across the base of the blade and long enough to come up to the user's armpit; it is _not_ a delicate weapon.
There is one emporium sword that looks like a legitimate rapier, of the Silver Sepulchre set. Beside a dog and parrot, that's the only other emporium thing I bought.
Btw Bacxaber you probably are already aware but you can get a Order of Souls Rapier. Which I think looks really good but the concern about the rapier is the Order of Souls carvings on the blade.

I always thought the Relic of Darkness Cutlass was cool because it looks like something The Spy would use. Also I find myself using the Shish-Kabob sword a lot. Fits the fisherman/solitary survivalist theme i like a lot, yk?
I use the Bone Crusher sword - not the recolor, but the original. It's this rusted, bent blade that looks like it was carved from solid metal rather than actually forged, and it definitely looks unique (plus barely anyone else has it). The rib/tusk/whatever they exactly are used as guards, and the bird skull on the end of the handle, as well as the leather - it works really well. Yeah it looks like a blunt weapon, but it's covered in rust and held together with straps. It makes sense it wouldn't be in great condition. Other swords, like even the Ashen Dragon one, do get a bit of a boost in my book for having nice little ornaments on the ends of the handles. Also I think Briggsy's is meant to be, like, bronze or copper or something, since gold is quite soft and impractical (though molten metal is more impractical still but that sword is regardless an amazing one). 6:15 That right there is an Ashen Dragon set item, unfortunately. Look at the dragon head on the handle, plus the Ashen Dragon (the actual ship) is a crew of skeletons so it lines up. Still looks pretty cool, that, actually. Reaper's Heart stuff is based on that original parrot, hence the wings. I really like the Reaper's Heart cutlass though - the eerie red energy does compliment the gold and black nicely. That new Gold Hoarder heavy cutlass is really overdone to me. It's trying to be, as a whole, one of the skeleton keys, but it doesn't work - the blade's damage is the teeth of it, the handle's overbuilt section the key's ring, etc. Just doesn't work. The Athena's Might sword is really cool to me because while getting slapped with it would be, as with many swords, a blunt hit, it uses the border of the AF logo as the guard and I love that. The twisting design at the base of the Legendary Spirit and Ghost swords is really cool to me. Though the latter would be worthless at blocking when a sword swings through that gap in it. The Tribute Peak sword would look nicer if it were just the emerald blade, rather than having been.. dipped in molten coins, I think it's supposed to be. I love the straps or whatever the are with their faint writing on the Masked Renegade stuff. The rest of that sword.. it's like a secondary blade you keep, a dagger for combat rather than voting, for when you lose your usual sword.
@@Bacxaber Well it's what the metal seems to be. I don't know why Rare, with access to at least thirty different premade gold textures, would do that otherwise.
That definitely isn't the ashen dragon sword, people claim "it's being held at a weird angle" but that isn't the case based on the direction of the pommel. The most obvious giveaway is that the blade stops at the glowy bits, where there would otherwise be black metal surrounding it and obscuring the bones. As for the glowing blade and the pommel, just look at the ashen dragon cutlass and then look back, they're nothing alike. Hey, actually, since they're adding rapiers to sets now, maybe that's just the ashen dragon light cutlass? It definitely isn't the current ashen dragon cutlass, though.
The Heavy Swords look like they’re based on a type of falchion, although much heavier looking than falchion’s normally are. My only problem with them is the blades end up looking way wider than they should be. Merrick’s Cutlass looks like a miniature halberd or pole-arm of some kind, maybe the leftovers of a harpoon or something? The Eastern Winds style swords look like they’re based on Chinese bladed weapons, most likely the Dao and probably a Dakandao specifically. Would have definitely preferred a red rapier like what was shown but I will say the Ruby Blade looks like it’s made out of obsidian or some kind of blood-stained volcanic glass. It could make sense, and I’d say that kind of weapon would be prone to shattering but who knows how sturdy seemingly magical or cursed stuff in Sea of Thieves is. I’d love to see them add in more rapiers as well, and perhaps some katana-style weapons or just more unique weapons like that khopesh, like a seax or a shotel, or maybe a viking-style arming sword or a Scottish broadsword. For the legendary cutlass, the dark bluish-purple metal looks to me like blued steel which has then been darkened... unsure how feasible that is personally in pirate times but it would fit the bill handily
Blued steel has existed for 100s of years at this point, so it would be entirely possible for it to be done in pirate times, the only downside is that it can result in a softer temper, but that doesn't matter in a video game
I think reading the descriptions for the swords would have explained the thought behind the designs. Although expecting a SoT player to know how to read would be to much in my opinion.
Ok if they wanted to make flameheart's sword look threatening, then they shouldn't have made the bit after the blade connects to the gaurd be so small. It looks more like it would be broken when the first sword collides into it. OR Better yet make flameheart have a more cutlass that is barbed or looks like the blade that has a point that curves back like a hook. AND if they want an orky blade, Then take reference from Freebootaz with swords, not the shit from warcraft.
I think it looks a bit weird, and the concept would work better as a gun (like one of those gold hoarder ledger blunderbusses). Mainly my concern is how impractical it looks. It's not terrible though, maybe a C+.

Eternal Freedom's an A, and the other one's just an uglier GSD sword, so C-.
Justice for the ocean crawler sets bro ✊
Ok if they wanted to make flameheart's sword look threatening, then they shouldn't have made the bit after the blade connects to the gaurd be so small.
It looks more like it would be broken when the first sword collides into it.
OR Better yet make flameheart have a more cutlass that is barbed or looks like the blade that has a point that curves back like a hook.
AND if they want an orky blade, Then take reference from Freebootaz with swords, not the shit from warcraft.
I don't always use a sword, but when I do it's the Order of Souls khopesh.
11:43 lol 😂 but I agree and also 14:04 lol😂😂
the lodestar set is S+ tier
Lodestar stuff is pretty cool, yeah. I dunno about god tier but definitely As.
God tier
@@mvppka7074 I disagree.
I played the game in season one, then stopped and came back for season nine. I kinda regret how many cool cosmetics I missed tho.
The order of souls cutlass, for being a unique one, looks pretty ass if you ask me, but I use it nonetheless
Great Video!
the ashen dragon looks less of a ballon and more like a boomerang of how curved the blade is
The preview sword was just the captain rapier in a different color
this is gospel.
nedo like chef cutlass because nedo fisherman
How do you feel about the captains rapier, from the captaincy weekend?
It's great, but I prefer the GH rapier.
I love and use pendragons sword but my main issue with it is that the pommel looks big, idk why it just looks uncomfortable to hold in my Opinion.
I used the mercenary blade and the sovereign blade until the new halo inspired weapon set and bought the whole thing and use all those now.
A sword thats still in it's sheath would be hilarious if done right 4:37
that fate of fortune sword is a real fav, but nothing tops the legendary seadog sword..that is if you use swords
What about Captain Bones' Original Pirate Cutlass?
I think it looks a bit weird, and the concept would work better as a gun (like one of those gold hoarder ledger blunderbusses). Mainly my concern is how impractical it looks. It's not terrible though, maybe a C+.
Glad I’m not the only one that thinks the new spatula cutlass is stupid
I've been wondering if the spatula sword is a reference to or Easter egg to SpongeBob lol
I doubt it. I think it's moreso a Hunter's Call thing, or a "every crew has a cook" thing.
