    Is Sn operation also necessary to find out point group? For staggered ethane, the point group D3d can be decided only by symmetry aces as well as dihedral plane. If any molecule which doesn't perform Sn operation, can it be the Dnd point group?

    Hello sir my question is can we take the example of[ Ni(CN)4]2- in Cnh point group because it has one horizontal plane and 4 vertical planes and as you said first priority is given to the horizontal plane??

    • @AllBoutChemistry
      @AllBoutChemistry  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sarjot Kaur,
      Very nice question, yes you're right Ni(CN)4²¯ has a horizontal plane, but in the video I've also told that if molecule has Cn+nC2 Axis of rotation then point group changes from C to D. Therefore the point group here will be D4h not C4h

    Sir, allene will have 1- s4 element also, does it make any difference to the point group. Moreover at time 34.17 in the video you are explaining 3 sigma d plane, sir kindly refer website symmetry otterbein only 2 sigma d is there, we can also observe that there is no possibility of third sigma plane. Kindly explain correctly.

  • @simranvasir1443
    @simranvasir1443 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hello sir in Dnd point group as you have given E, C2, 2C2, 2sigma d it will be fixed we have o remember all these conditions.
    but how we came to know for which molecule you have to apply dn or dnd or C2 group?

    • @AllBoutChemistry
      @AllBoutChemistry  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I explained in the video too that if you have n fold axis, and also n C2 axis then it will become d,
      for example if you have a c3 acxis and you also have 3c2 axis the altogether they become d3. Now whether it will be Dnd or Dnh, it depends on the plane. if you have only dihedral planes then dnd and if horizontal plane then Dnh. please watch the video carefully. I've explained all these things there.

    clear explanation great lecture indeed! but sir I have one doubt in pcl3 you have written the point group as c3v but it also has a plane of symmetry (sigma h) since it is a planar molecule and its point group should be c3h then why it isn't written so?

    Sir.. in the staggered ethane example.. how they could be 3sigmaD.. i mean they are perpendicular to the primary axis,so they should be SigmaV..

    • @AllBoutChemistry
      @AllBoutChemistry  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      In case of staggered Ethan, the plane is passing parallel to principle Axis. Now the plane is dihedral not vertical, I've explained the difference in my other video on Basics of Group Theory. Plz watch it for detailed explanation.

    • @ritushukla.9595
      @ritushukla.9595 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      All 'Bout Chemistry i have already seen that sir.. but i'm still confused.. how to differentiate between sigmaV and sigmaD

    • @AllBoutChemistry
      @AllBoutChemistry  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's very difficult to explain with text but for instance you can think that sigma v is the plane parallel to principle Axis and which bisect the angle made by atoms and sigma d is dihedral plane which is also parallel to principle Axis but these will not bisect the angles made by atoms but they contains the atoms itself.
      For square planar structure, principle Axis will be C4 and two sigma v will pass in between of the sides of square made by atoms and sigma d will pass through diagonal of square, that is they contains the atoms.
