I talked on the phone w/ Biff for a couple of minutes when they were guests on a local radio show. That was around 1984 or so. Great to see these guys are still going strong!
Been with SAXON since 1983's Power & the Glory and I never left. Looking forward to this one and can't wait for my vinyl copy. Sounds great from just the one song. I love the 90's albums, too. I thought Dogs of War rocked!!!
@@PossessedByMetal666 You're welcome, brother! 1990's Solid Ball of Rock and the live album The Eagle Has Landed Part 2 (2x CD) from 1998 are great as well!
I watched the Hell, Fire and Damnation video on a lark one day when it popped up on my TH-cam feed. I was very impressed with it and decided to pre-order the album. Man,I'm glad I did. It was in my car stereo for 3 weeks straight. I couldn't get enough of it. Madame Guillotine is also my favorite song as well as the title track, Witches Of Salem, and Super Charger, but you're right. There's not a bad song on this album. I really hadn't listened to Saxon since the '80s but now I'm working through their back catalog. Carpe Diem is every bit as good as the new one, in my opinion. I also picked up Denim And Leather. You can definitely hear the evolution of this band. I'd have to say they've actually gotten better over the years and that's not usually the case. I plan to see them in May when they come to Cincinnati.
It's 6 AM and I just gave the new album a first listen here on TH-cam. It hasn't really tickled my fancy....yet. The last 2 albums were certainly much better. But, that's just my first impression. I need to listen to it in my car to maybe appreciate a little more.
Hey there! For me, it's definitely a record with some songs that are immediate and others that take a few more listens to sink into your brain. But hopefully they will! 😊👊
The cover of Carpe Diem makes me think of Wishbone Ash's Argus a little--the sleeve of that classic record portrayed a medievalesque warrior sentry ⚔peering off into the distance. Albeit he was far larger and more the focal point than the Roman legionary figures in the Saxon artwork. I briefly met Biff and Doug when I saw Saxon with UFO and Jared James Nichols in 2017. Both were true gentlemen. Epic show, unforgettable memory and all around a very cool experience! 🤘🤘
My first ever gig was Saxon/Tygers of Pan Tang, seen them through the years and still enjoy the albums. Agree with you on the cover and Andy Sneap's production 👍 Gotta love Saxon, it's great to see them continue to enjoy the success they deserve ... got my tkt for the Priest/Heep/Saxon show in Bournemouth 💪💪💪 Keep up the good work!!
After hearing your thoughts on Carpe Diem [( music and artwork ) which mirror mine] I'm even more pumped for Hell, Fire and Damnation because of your positive review.
I love this. So glad to have further boosted your excitement for this one! There's Something In Roswell is coming out as a video imminently. Let me know what you think! 😊🤘
Hi I bought ticket one year ago for Saxon and Priest in Italy...so Great Saxon's album, I love all the album and carpe diem too I Saw on tour two time in 2022 and 2023 very powerful and strong....so thanks again for this video...cheers!!!!
I can't wait...Saxon and Priest....Best bands in the world...but in my opinion I think that from the Doug Scarrat and Nibbs Carter came into the band Saxon have a second life (unleash the beast on the top).A lot of time I think if in the '80 Saxon had this line up...waiting your comments....PS I saw Saxon 18 time....and the next...will be 19😀@@PossessedByMetal666...UH forgot that Brian Tatler is a monster of guitar....saw the first time with saxon in june 2023....
Thank you for the info! I´m really looking forward to the album, I guess I´ll buy the boxset edition. Even their livshows get better and better, I´ve seen them countless times over the last 35 years, mainly in Wacken where they play every other year, hahaha...
Yes, and I wonder which one. I could imagine it being Madame Guillotine or There's Something In Roswell. This could, of course, be wishful thinking. But the great thing is, there will be no bad choice! 😊🤘 What's your own fave Saxon record?
you need to check out a band called lovebites. they are an all female heavy metal band from japan. they put out there latest album in 2023 called JUDGEMENT DAY!!!!!! great review and i am going to see saxon on may 3 2024. have a great day!
Very much looking forward to this album! Saxon are one my favourite bands (I discovered them when I was 18 and I'm 31 now) and they really haven't put a foot wrong from Solid Ball of Rock back in 1990 all the way up to Carpe Diem in 2022 in my opinion. It's remarkable how consistently Saxon have put out albums that range from good to excellent to awesome after all these years! Sounds like the new album will keep that trend going if this video is anything to go by so yeah, bring on the album! 🤘
Awesome! Yes indeed, Saxon have been very consistent - and I'm glad this video has only added to your anticipation for this record! 😊🤘 What's your favourite post-80s Saxon record?
@@PossessedByMetal666 Oh, man. It's tough one to answer because there's quite a few to pick from but if I had to pick one above them all, it has to be The Inner Sanctum. I listened to it a month or so ago for the first time in a while and it still sounds excellent! It might be a bold statement to make but I like it almost as much as Wheels of Steel, Denim and Leather & Strong Arm of the Law! It's almost a perfect listen from start to finish and the only song that let's it down is 'If I Was You'. That song feels so out of place compared to the rest of the album! In fact I'd say my top 5 Post-80s Saxon albums are: 1) The Inner Sanctum 2) Metalhead 3) Thunderbolt 4) Lionheart 5) Unleash the Beast
@@PossessedByMetal666 Okay I'm checking back in! I bought the album, I've listened to it and I like it very much! It's another very good slab of metal from Saxon! Upon first impression I like it more than Carpe Diem but I don't like it as much as Thunderbolt! For me Thunderbolt was a 9/10, Carpe Diem was 7.5/10 and Hell, Fire and Damnation is a solid 8/10! I've not really got much else to say, a bit Overkill and Motorhead, with Saxon you know what you're gonna get. They've got a formula and it works so if it ain't broke, why fix it? Best tracks on the album for me, 'Fire and Steel', '1066', 'There's Something in Roswell' and 'Kubla Khan and the Merchant of Venice'! 🤘
Im glad you mentioned the Carpe Diem album cover...and to that...Im "fairly new" to Saxon (last 10 years or so) even though Im approaching 50!...But looking at all their album covers I cant help but notice how awful 90% of them are 😵💫
@@PossessedByMetal666 I like the Carpe Diem cover as I'm into the History of Roman Britain as this is clearly depicting Hadrian's Wall, and tbh there's only a handful of covers I'm not fond of...Can't wait to hear this new album in full, sounds stellar.
Good review and looking forward to the new album! A bit harsh though on the Carpe Diem album cover. Less is more. As a history buff I love it. You have me excited though for the upcoming release. 👍
I'm more of a pUnK but I dig Saxon. Loved the last album and also the two cover albums.. So yeah.. New video looks and sounds great! Greetings from New Jersey.. )^_-)/
While the cover sucked for Carpe Diem, the songs are pretty good. Shame they didn't get to tour that one in the US. I've got to play HF&D more often. It seemed like Saxon by numbers. Album art is much better.
