In my terms 'poser' means someone who desperately tries to appear "black metal"; trying to appear more satanic, nihilistic, evil etc. than they actually are for being acknolwedged by the genre/scene. drifting away from the genre or becoming too polished are two completely different (and separate) things for me, neither good or bad inherently. it's all about how well it is executed. some do it just to appeal the softer mainstream listeners which would be bad, others do from the heart because they actually have more things to give musically, and that often is very good. good examples for the latter being Dimmu Borgir and Bathory.
So all black metal then. Because let's be real: there's nothing genuinely "evil" about dressing up in dumb costumes and playing music. The whole black metal thing is just larpy poser nerd metal for edgy lotr fans or nazis
Perfectly stated. I was about to post the same. Always frustrated when bands who progress in their sound beyond one genre get called "posers." By that reasoning, most every band ever pretty much deserves to be called posers.
I do agree that Alcest isn’t really black metal in the traditional sense, but they still have black metal parts. I call them “blackened shoegaze”, but they are still a very incredible band.

My opinion on Behemoth, good music, just not blackened enough if you get what I’m saying. They’re more death metal to me, still good music as I said, just not black metal (after the first few albums is what I’m talking about they did start off as black metal)
First few albums were actually more death metal, just the perspective on what death metal is has drastically changed over the years. I always saw Behemoth as Deicide that wanted to be Dimmu Borgir.
Yeah it feels hard to get into black metal t’s either crazy good or really weak. The difference in quality already between equally iconic artists like burzum and mayhem is unheard of in other genres I’d say
Alot of bands who make depressive black metal dont even call themselves dsbm they just get labeled that like the band bethlehem alot of people call it dsbm even though it never even existed when the band made music
Though I agree with the Dimmu take, Stormblast is still one of my favorite albums in the genre. Fantastic sympho black. Hell, everything up till Enthrone Darkness Triumphant is brilliant.
the entire saarland black metal scene from the 90s - early 00s is top tier, you should give his other projects a listen as well as the other guys stuff.
Hi! Real life poser here, as usual spending my day enjoying life listening to Behemoth and Dimmu and Deafheaven and DSBM while telling people I love black metal. I hope this information ruins the day of any music snob who reads this. If you, however, have a great time listening to music that you love while also not shitting on other people for listening to what they like, I hope you have a long, beautiful, immensely happy life 🥰
Same. They do not deserve to be ranked below those other bands. I like what they put out in the 1990s and early 2000s. After that, not so much. But I listen to the early stuff regularly.
Ive always argued that DSBM is the only place in black metal, where you will find actual VERY REAL darkness. Posers play pretend, but we very rarely get that with DSBM.
Nonsense...you just try to divide metal community and call some of them true metal fans or not. It reminds me when years ago there was a group of "true" metals and we call them a "Metal Militia". It is riddiculous. None of us should be treaten this way. Every metal band is unique and gives us something - lyrics, music, some kind of art. We have a lot of metal genres and some band are just in the middle of everything. We can talk about that, but the only thing we should always do is to sneak up above the horizon and try to understand what stands behind the band. Gather the people, not divide them. Metal music is supposed to unite, not divide.
Honestly, the only poser thing is pretending that 2nd wave Norwegian BM is "trve". Its the most accessible and boring scene in black metal, while for the time it was revolutionary it got absolutely destroyed by any movements afterwards.
The codger's paradox - the older you get, the less you GAF about 'being cool' or what others think, and you just do / listen to what you enjoy...therefore becoming cooler.
I can understand why you think DSBM is poser, but man, I still like it. At least a couple of bands, like Xasthur or Sacrimoon(album of 2017, of course), really good. I don't count Lifelover, Shining or Psyhonaut 4, because it doesn't even remotely resemble DSBM. But there are good groups in DSBM, there is no denying that. ^_^
@@Agalloch1234I LOVE "We are doomed" from the Isolation Album, such a great atmosphere. I even had to cry listening to it the first time 😮😅 Great artist!
What would you consider Lifelover and P4 if not their own kind of DSBM? I see no other genre fitting better Sort of agree with Shining, it's not really DSBM but also has its fair share of parts of it
Honestly, I don't understand the word 'poser'. If you recorded an album in style X and then decided to make something different, does that mean you’re still bound by the label attached to your first album? If we think like that, then Darkthrone are posers of death metal.

I'm 45 years old and I've long, long, long since moved on from the nonsense of "poser" labels. What really matters is the music. It matters little what they wear. That kind of label is a bit like putting yourself on the same level as the general materialism in all aspects of society.
this is silly - people sitting around discussing what is doom/death/black/blackened/etc/etc metal, who is/isn't, how many percent poser they are, who has gone up/down the metal hierarchy, etc, etc, etc. Like 12-year-olds arguing who would win a comic book hero fight.
I know a lot of people like what they are currently doing, and I like some of it myself, but I'd put Darkthrone in the "too bad they changed" category. A lot of bands have copied what they did in the early to mid '90s and have done great things with it, but I can't help but imagine what Darkthrone would have come up with if they did not break away from, and continued to develop within those extreme limitations they imposed upon themselves.
I agree. Vastly prefer the early stuff from them. I listen to (my favourite black metal band) Djevel and occasionally wonder what might have been for Darkthrone if they'd kept the foundational second-wave sound but progressed in their composition.
I don't agree, and I'm actually curious about your "more polished sound = not Black Metal" thing. By that logic, wouldn't Mgła be considered "not Black Metal", since Age of Excuse and even Exercises in futility are a lot more polished than Groza or their early EPs?
Ghost didn t even said or tried to be Metal. Ghost is Ghost, like Rammstein, it has its one genre. It borrows elements from pop, altt rock, psychedelic rock, arena rock, all the way to funeral doom or traditional heavy metal. What is important, is that their songs are good, and they are bring more new rock&metal fans every year than most of the old classic bands. A Kpop, or Taylor Swift fan will never get into metal with Darkthrone, but maybe with Ghost

The thing that cracks me up about Burzum is Varg made 4 of the best atmospheric black metal albums ever. Then he proceeded to talk about how much he hates black metal.
Frank Riegler created Kanonenfieber as an accessible and well marketable project and there's nothing wrong with that. I don't remember Frank Riegler/Noise ever claiming that Kanonenfieber is Black Metal. Yes, it was published on Black Metal Promotion, but they even upload Doom or Death Metal sometimes. It's like the next logical step for someone who started with Sabaton, got bored but still liked the energy of it. His other side projects work the same way, Non Estus Deus is like that for bored Behemoth fans, and Leipa is like that for bored DSBM fans. I'd say it's like the musical equivalent of a bridge. @@FortressofShred it's easy to sprout crap about him now.. But the dude was a master of his craft in the early days of the scene. And that is something you can NEVER take away from him.
Don't you know you can't be black metal unless you record in a literal dumpster!?

Easy to make, but not easy to make well. And that can be true for pretty much any punk/metal adjacent genre

Alot of bands who make depressive black metal dont even call themselves dsbm they just get labeled that like the band bethlehem alot of people call it dsbm even though it never even existed when the band made music
Sometimes art needs a little gatekeeping. Or else you end up with metalcore.
Though I agree with the Dimmu take, Stormblast is still one of my favorite albums in the genre. Fantastic sympho black. Hell, everything up till Enthrone Darkness Triumphant is brilliant.
Cradle has some of the most lucid genuinely occult sounding music that exists. GOAT status
the entire saarland black metal scene from the 90s - early 00s is top tier, you should give his other projects a listen as well as the other guys stuff.
Hi! Real life poser here, as usual spending my day enjoying life listening to Behemoth and Dimmu and Deafheaven and DSBM while telling people I love black metal. I hope this information ruins the day of any music snob who reads this. If you, however, have a great time listening to music that you love while also not shitting on other people for listening to what they like, I hope you have a long, beautiful, immensely happy life 🥰
Loved the early Dimmu’s so much. I’d put them under ‘Too Bad They Changed’. Agreed with the rest of the list tho.
Same. They do not deserve to be ranked below those other bands. I like what they put out in the 1990s and early 2000s. After that, not so much. But I listen to the early stuff regularly.
Enthroned Darkness Triumphant, Spiritual Black Dimensions, and Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia are all solid albums
Ive always argued that DSBM is the only place in black metal, where you will find actual VERY REAL darkness. Posers play pretend, but we very rarely get that with DSBM.
Instant like for Burzum. This man is a music genius.
Trick subject. Every black metal band are posers
Cringe ,
Honestly, the only poser thing is pretending that 2nd wave Norwegian BM is "trve". Its the most accessible and boring scene in black metal, while for the time it was revolutionary it got absolutely destroyed by any movements afterwards.

Blackgaze and hipster black metal are sort of the synonyms of poser black metal , but they are still better than what people call alternative metal.
Ahem Liturgy

I don't agree, and I'm actually curious about your "more polished sound = not Black Metal" thing. By that logic, wouldn't Mgła be considered "not Black Metal", since Age of Excuse and even Exercises in futility are a lot more polished than Groza or their early EPs?
I consider Mgla a great Black Metal band, even starting a new branch: "Polish Black Metal". They are a bit more melodic but still raw.
