- Today we're looking at the brand new 'Bleach' pedal by one of my favourite pedal companies -JPTRFX. This thing is basically a complete grunge setup in ONE pedal, and its awesome!
We'll look into all the different features of the pedal and break down why i think its so cool. I really hope i did this pedal the justice it deserves. Let me know what you think in the comments.
You can get the Bleach pedal from here: jptrfx.com/products/bleach

Ok I’ve sat with this for 24 hrs and I think there’s a couple mistakes I made in this video that I’d like to address.
1. When I mention the DS-1, I was basically trying to explain that the distortion side was based on an OP-Amp clipping circuit like the DS-1 or the Pumpkin Pi Big Muff, but with Twice as much voltage and a load of other stuff changed (that’s too clever for me to understand) that means it doesn’t sound scooped like the muff/DS-1 and has that full distortion sound like I was trying to describe when I said it reminds me of The Bends.
2. At the end when I said the main pluses I forgot to add the crazy wobbly vibrato/chorus effects that you get, that I can’t get from any of the other pedals I own. I hope the demos at the beginning and end demonstrate this though.
I don’t know enough about the internals of pedals to explain what everything is doing from a scientific way, I am just describing how stuff sounds to me and what I would use different bits of gear for. In the future I actually intend to get more clued up on this stuff though because it really interests me!
Anyway I hope this video did this pedal the justice it deserves. I’m sure it’s gonna be all over my next bands record! 💜
love your vids so much, you're one of the first people ive found who makes this style of video aimed towards genres of music i actually enjoy. thanks man !
Thanks so much mate!
There are many videos if you like blues. Less for alternative. So this is a win.
I use The King of Gear Oxford Drive for Radiohead tones. It's made to get both Jonny and Ed tones. You can nail The Bends with that pedal.
Yeah, they look super cool, but I could never seem to actually track one down!?
@@thesethingsmakenoisesthey go in and out of production but I think they're in production rn and are on V2 so it has more functions than the first run
Can’t wait for mine to arrive! This is so cool.I’ve got a bitquest and an obne screen violence that this is going to have a lot of fun with.
Yeah that’s gonna be absolutely mega!
great video. love the distortion sound and I think they nailed the small clone sound.
Yeah it’s killer isn’t it!
Can't wait to get mine 🔥
🤘🤘
Sounds awesome!
Thanks mate!
I love jptr fx
One of the best brands ran by amazing people
Yeah they’re amazing aren’t they!
I love my marshall origin 50 as well, and I also love Jupiter fx the stacked delay, and the fuzz that you've had on is awesome
They’re amazing aren’t they. Best affordable amp that gets all the sounds I want for sure.
Looks and sounds awesome.
It’s amazing mate.
Love that you have hooked up with Chris. He is a fabulous Mother Hubbard.
A hero!
@@thesethingsmakenoises we live in an incredible time period in gear where great humans are able to make great gear in great ways for great players.
Super cool pedal! I really dig your videos. It’s been a while since I’ve come across someone making videos who’s content I feel really connects with me like yours. Question: what virtual drum libraries/instruments do you use?
Thanks so much! I am basically just using the logic drummer stuff and then I mess with the compressions etc. But sometimes I add electronic drums (also from logic) when I get bored 😂
I just ordered mine can't wait to see what I write with it
Awesome! Let me know how you get on!
love ur vids
Thanks so much!!
Hi! Very nice video!
Thanks so much.
Definitely The Bends! I'm not a fan of chorus myself, but it's a cool pedal. The distortion is nice and thick!
Yeah it sounds really huge but without being messy!
Hey man, i love your videos mate! I was wondering, i noticed that you have the death by audio "fuzz war", have you ever made a demo of that pedal yet? If not you definitely maybe should. Cheers mate 🥂
It’s been lent to the band by a friend but there’s actually a video I’m going to make comparing it to a diy pedal build I’m going to have a go at building
@@thesethingsmakenoises awesome! I can't wait to watch it!
The chorus is pretty nuts on that, it gets a good vibrato sound.
Yeah it is crazy!!
Just watched a video of yours on chorus+distortion, ran to reverb to look at some shiny new pedals, now this comes out.. 🤔
Haha no way! It’s an awesome pedal!
A great take on a ds-1, I love this brand and the fact theg give you a circuit board! Im an avid builder and soldering is an essential skill for musicians. Fixing or making leads, replacing pots, pick ups etc. What about creating your own series/parallel/switching box, for your personalised experimental pedal board routing?
That’s a great idea actually
@@thesethingsmakenoises that free pcb would be a great way to get into it. I'd love to know what it is and how it sounds.
id say more nevermind pedal than bleach.
😂😂😂😂😂
Haha yeah fair!
I hear what the mix sounds like. I wish I knew what the pedal sounded like.
Fair enough coulda had more of it on its own, but whenever I want to buy a new pedal I always want to hear how it will actually sound in context ✌️
The Origin50 sounds really good. I might buy it but I'm hesitating between the new JMP Studio 20W head which has a truly fabulous sound. Afterwards I don't know if 20W can be enough for live sessions
Ahh it’s so good! I haven’t checked that out yet, but I will say I mostly play live with the origin on the middle output switch, and it’s plenty loud enough with the master at around 10/11:00 they are LOUD haha
Nice pedal, never heard (of) it. Dual fx pedals are great (Jet Phaser, RE20).
If it gets you play forget time and fiddle with the knobs it is a good pedal.
Have you read the book STOMPBOX: 100 Pedals of the world's greatest guitarsts by Elion Paz?
It’s brand new! Love the Re20. It’s awesome!
No I haven’t. That sounds right up my street though!
@thesethingsmakenoises How's the drive side on bass? Did you give it a try?
Oh mate it honestly sounds amazing! Will try and make a ‘short’ on it
I get the same tones with my boss ds1 and big muff Triangle nano and the ehx nano clone
Fair enough. Personally I think it sounds a lot fuller than my DS-1 and the nano clone can’t do those really fast deep chorus effects
Hi Dan, Is the 4 x12 cab still for sale? I have tried messaging on FB
No sorry mate, I’m not sure why it’s still coming up on Facebook. I’ve marked as sold again on there. (Basically I made the video where I put holes in one of the speakers and now I want to keep it haha)
@@thesethingsmakenoises okay, thanks
Just read the description and it seems like the distortion side is based on thr OpAmp muff?
I like the look and some of the sounds, especially the intro. I think the hard sell for me is thst both the OpAmp reissue and the DS-1 are under $100 in stores around here, and the reissue small clone is under $110, so chris/JPTR really needs to highlight what sets this pedal apart from those outside the "all in one package" thing. It is a good feature assuming one can truly get the full range of sound of the originals/reissues with this, but for me it wouldn't be worth the extra cash difference to save that space, especially with the DS-1 and rhe small clone being on sale on the new market often and readably available on the used market for even less.
You should also know that this video has been put in the gallery of the product page, in case you weren't already aware. It makes the discrepancy between the page itself mentioning the OpAmp and this video mentioning the DS-1 all the more noticable.
The distortion was at some point a ds1 as we started the development I don’t write what Daniel „has to say“ so if he mentions the ds1 400 times this does not mean that there is a 100% ds1 clone in it .. that would be a bit boring
The new pedals you mentioned are low budged versions of cause and in MY opinion they sound week against the bleach 🤓
And soundwise it’s a op amp powered ds1 with 18v and different clipping diodes different voltages different filter values and so on
@@JPTRFX oh I know you didn't write what he said. I only mentioned it because of the disparity between what's written on your site and what he mentions in the video. I've come to really love his videos and care about what he has to say. I can easily see people getting mixed messages about what he said in the video vs what you say on the site, and I'd like him to realize this difference before something negative happens, especially with your use of it on the product page. I can just imagine the potential backlash because sometimes the Internet is cruel.
I can appreciate that you feel your pedal has a stronger sound than the cheaper reissues of the pedals yours is based on. This channel made me aware that your pedal exists, this is more of a suggestion to you:
I'm basing my understanding of what this pedal is on this video and what you have in the description area for the product itself.
It sounds like it has a basis of a clone of a reissued Small clone and either a DS1 or an op amp big muff put together in a single pedal.
The video tells me a little bit about where some differences might be.
The OpAmo circuit is directly mentioned on your site, and I'm reading about the diodes. What I'm not getting is the A to B comparison. What do the reissues not do that yours does.
Quote:
"To offer both scooped and mid-forward sounds we changed a [SIC] handful parts to offer a wide tonal range. Big clipping diodes that you can change with internal settings ensure that the sound is properly grinding into your eardrums."
Okay, big clipping diodes that can be changed with internal settings, and offering scooped mid or mids forward.
And.. how is this different from the OpAmp? Are you saying that the OpAmp offers only scooped mids? Are you saying that the OpAmp offers only mids forward?
I'd want more specific details as to why I should pick your pedal at around $50+ over the OpAmp and small clone.
Don't get me wrong, I like the sounds I heard out of the opening, but I think I represent an enthusiast market. I'm not going to go on tour, I'm not a professional, I don't know every element of every pedal out there. Nirvana inspired me to play guitar and I followed kurt's equipment because I wanted to emulate those tones, so I bought the ds2, the small clone, the sans amp, and I'm looking for the polychorus.
It's obvious that at least some of the influence here was Nirvana. As a non-professional enthusiast who is interested in that sound, I'm genuinely interested in understanding why I should pick up this pedal instead of the ds1/ds2 or the OpAmp muff, and the small clone.
Believe me when I say that if I wasn't interested I wouldn't have gone to look at the site. I'm just finding the information lacking as to why I should pay the extra cash to get this instead of those pedals, especially with the difference in price.
Younger me who loved Nirvana and started playing guitar in the mid 90s couldn't afford this, so I got an Aria Chorus pedal and the ds2, both used, and both that I still have to this day, for under $100 total. Current me is looking at the OpAmp reissue or the v2 muffaletta with the OpAmp trying to decide if I want to pay $150+ more for the jhs offering because of versatility of circuits if I don't think I'll use more than the pumpkin pi.
So yeah, I'm at least a little interested. I just want more information and less confusion.
Hey mate, am just about to go on stage but gonna properly reply later 🙌
@@AMurder0fCrows JHS Muffuletta ain't Hi-Fi sound and Pumpkin Pi might sound harsher than the original. JPTR FX got a lot of bells and whistles and I'm a 3 knobs pedals fan.
...but is this also the Type O Negative in a box pedal for bass??? ┬┴┬┴┤ ͜ʖ ͡°) ├┬┴┬┴ asking for a friend
I ordered this like 2 months ago and never got it and I sent a message to them and they never responded
I think I read something on pedalboards of doom saying Chris had sent them all out now! @JPTRFX is that right?
@@thesethingsmakenoises the AT didnt worked just found your comment
yes we dont forget customers or orders we just send them out one after one
Errrr im not the greatesr Nirvana fan yes they had and still have great songs but there were better bands like the Pixies the smashing turnips, and to some extent especially the first album teenage fanclub, they went off in another direction with some sublime work (thats a 5iver you owe me gerry if you ever read this lol) my bloody valentine which if your a shoegaze man you should be right into. I had a friend who you would never know who was signed to alan mcgees creation records around the same time as all these bands took off what a great time was had at the time.. i digress but my absolute favourite is the Pixies absolute brilliance was and the smashing turnips, they had it all and I have yet to hear someone as prolific and musically astute as them since. Sonic Youth is another good one more comparable with the VU sound and style wise. Any way what was your question 😂
I agree with all of this!! Haha great bands.
Idk,
The in utero tone is hard to achieve,
W/o
Two rare expensive pedals,
Otherwise most from the era does not require anything of the sort.
A boutique pedal that solves zero problems is antithetical to Kurt cobain side of the scene.
A sans amp clone paired with a poly chorus clone,
Would be neat.
Perhaps “the bends”
Might be a better name for this pedal.
This pedal fits the
“college kids with money to chase tones post nirvana”
Side of the scene
hey i know this might be heavy to you but its not that people trow money at us just because we build nice pedals
Its also for us not easy to survive in 2023 and with every sold pedal you support a group of friends/local musicans and parents.
i personal was never in collage but i can tell you that most students dont have money to buy expensive gear ....mhm
Pedals dont solve problems but they help create art and we support the gaze/noise/alt szene for the last almost 10 years so let us do our thing :)
cheers chris
@@JPTRFX the analogous comparison I am making is between nirvana and radiohead.
my perspective is objective,
I think radio head is great,
But the name of this pedal is ironic.
You are from a class that can chase tones as opposed to where Kurt cobain was during the bleach era,
The college kid statement is not to dig at you,
If you think being middle class and up is bad thing,
that’s great,
But that is not the context I was presenting
You are taking it too personally.
This pedal does not help one achieve a nirvana tone,
Nor is it in the spirit of Kurt cobain,
Yet nirvana is being used to sell this pedal.
@@jeremytee2919 if you want to archive the same sound you need also a arsenal on outboard gear and what not it’s a pedal that can do the nirvana thing it sounds great and bleach is a cool name 🤓if you want to archive some bleach tones leave the chorus off it has stand alone bypass 🤝
@@JPTRFX to your digression,
Once he could afford to choose,
Kurt cobain used a clean preamp into a flat power amp.
His tone was cheap pedals with exception of the sansamp and poly chorus.
Now to tie it back to the point,
This pedal is vanity,
I.e.
Entirely
Antithetical to Kurt cobains approach.
The name is ridiculous for a multitude of reasons,
and the producers are banking on nirvana,
Which is shady and entirely ironic.
Do you wish to sidestep it again?
your feelings are 100% you,
If you think the way you are living is worthy of shame,
It is only a personal revelation related to what I am saying.
The only person who should be offended by what I’ve said is the person making the pedal.
But the only person who deserves to be offended is Kurt cobain,
And I’m sure he would be.
@@jeremytee2919 i am sorry that you feel so strongly about a product name
