I was given an assignment to analyze a spoken word poem and this was a choice. I was like, “I’m in orchestra, I like music sure.” And after I was done I was speechless and I showed my orchestra teacher and he was the same way. That just goes to show how IMPACTFUL this is
1:18 "And kings, queens, it didn't matter - the man got down on his knees for NO ONE, but amputated the legs of his piano so he could feel the vibrations through the floor. The man got down on his knees FOR MUSIC." Absolutely powerful. Just thinking about it makes me tear up. Outstanding beyond compare.
I am left speechless. I am trying to convey my emotions into words to let this man know how beyond my imagination he is but I cannot do it. I am left speechless.
I love how he walks out looking shy and uncomfortable after saying such words, he transforms on a whole different person when he talks... no, that's who he really is.
whenever I'm down about my writing, I listen to this and it helps me get back on track. Such emotion. Two lines in particular are incredible, he says "not good enough" with such emotion and "It was perfect. You see, the deaf have an intimacy with silence, its there in their dreams" Shane, that poem is absolute perfection.
Genius: Something like this can never be boiled down to a single line, but let me try... "Each note, leaving track marks over every inch of their body making them ache for ONE MORE HIT - He was an addiction" To anybody who has dealt with a heroin addiction - either personally or vicariously - this is a powerful line.
These words seem ancient but beautiful. Like an old book that's falling apart and yellowed but the story is clear and beautiful. This poem is beautiful.
This is one of the two poems I performed In state competition. The amount of emotion this piece filled me with was so immense that my hands became instruments that painted the story my mouth spoke. I made it to the regional finals and I miss performing everyday.
We were shown this in forensics (public speaking) class and I was in awe of how amazing it was. I get chills when he says The man got on his knees got music. People in the poetry section of the class are gonna try this but I highly dount it will be as amazing as this
I was in my second last year of school and I was so waiting for this poem to come because as a pianist myself I was surprised to see Beethoven’s name in a book. I am in my final year now waiting for more than one and a half year for this to be taught in class and today it was it. I am going to present this in class tomorrow
This man is on fire. We should live in a world that recognizes and rewards genius instead of mediocrity. I saw him at the National Slam Convention in 2002 and was moved to tears. He is just amazing!!!!
I love how he talked about the music "invading their nervous systems." I feel like the more cliche thing would have been to talk about how it touched their souls, and to understand it as a physical, psychological experience was interesting and surprising to me.
I saw someone dance to this at a dance competition. I know "how do people dance to spoken word?" I don't know, but they did. It was an amazing and compelling performance.
@nacho862 It's called: "Ode an die Freude" which is German for "Ode to joy". And it's the 4th movement of 9th symphony of Beethoven. To be precisely: Ludwig van Beethoven - Symphony no.9 - in D minor op. 125 - IV - Presto, allegro assai
@DeathDelays232 You can't teach what Shane's got. It has to be in your every breath. No amount of words and marks and feedback guarantee the ability to bring people to tears like he does.
We failed to grasp your words of "eat more"? Very intriguing. I would much enjoy attending a lecture about "eat more", that I may better understand what the words truly mean.
10 years later, and this performance has lost none of its power. One of my all-time favorites.
It’s awesome
Hello Sally, i hope you’re safe over there? i am Pollack Sharman from Key West Florida and you Sally where are you from if i may ask?

"The history wasn't important. To know the man, all we had to do was listen."
I am left speechless.

I am left speechless.
Everytime I need to get some chills I pull this up.
Slam poetry is music to a writer's ears
I saw this performance live. This dude is fucking incredible.
hey sis i was there too
I love how he walks out looking shy and uncomfortable after saying such words, he transforms on a whole different person when he talks... no, that's who he really is.
I randomly remembered this performance for the first time in probably 5+ years. Still love it as much as the first time I heard it

Shane's poetry is more powerful than any other poetry I've ever heard. I wish I had in my mind some of his genius and passion

I have probably listen to this about 100 times and it still takes my breath away.
His words alone are beautiful, but the way he delivers them with such emotion takes the whole experience to another level... quite breathtaking really
These words seem ancient but beautiful. Like an old book that's falling apart and yellowed but the story is clear and beautiful. This poem is beautiful.
Shane just makes me realize how much more i can push myself with my art.
I come back to this performance all the time it's just so powerful. I love this poem and the way he puts his passion in to it.
i first heard of him at the Olympics as well. now if find myself watching what ever i can find over and over.
he writes as if he knows Beethoven personally. love way he evokes emotion and injects it into every word he says.

This is one of the two poems I performed In state competition. The amount of emotion this piece filled me with was so immense that my hands became instruments that painted the story my mouth spoke. I made it to the regional finals and I miss performing everyday.

Go Shane Koyczan!!!
I love how he talked about the music "invading their nervous systems." I feel like the more cliche thing would have been to talk about how it touched their souls, and to understand it as a physical, psychological experience was interesting and surprising to me.
Whew man such power absoulutly stunning!
Best thing on youtube!!
Every couple years I come back to this video cuz I believe the same to be true
He's so young here!
I am so jealous of the way this man can express his emotions. His words became alive... just like beethoven's music :)
of all the slam poetry on the internet this is the best
Apart from Paul Rose, I did not know anyone who could talk Beethoven and understand it in words. I applaud you sir.
AMAZING. Saw it in my creative writing class. So powerful.
You are a wizard of words. An enchanter with the english language and I only hope, that some day I can move crowds the way u can.
this is pure perfect, you are an amazing poet
We are studying this poem in the final year of high school... came all the way here to see the poet

I kinda like to think. of how much he has grown 'till now... and how many experiences has gone through him.
I honestly think anyone who doesn't think this is amazing has the inability to see beauty displayed directly in front of them.
only 126k views. wow this deserves millions!
I love this poem so much.
Wow, what a great poem. Great performance!
I wish I could be this inspired
I really enjoyed this.... amazing.....
